Dana (erato) | 922 comments OK, went on a tear and read City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare in one sitting yesterday. (Do you hear the clock? Cuckoo! Cuckoo!)

Here's my Dana's City of Bones Review. As you can see from my wildy variant star rating, this book was a bit difficult for me to file away cleanly. Grrr!

Dana (erato) | 922 comments Oh, and does anyone know what the HTML is for half stars? I can make the whole ones, but I'm not cool enough yet for half. :)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments AND...

Super-congrats to you Rebecca you medical genius! I used to work for a medical staffing agency so I know for a fact that the work is out there. As preventative care becomes more the norm than the exception, diagnostic testing and tools just keep going on the rise. Great choice and good luck to you! I'm sure you will be very content with what you are doing.

Three cheers for knowing what you want to be when you grow up! ;P

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Sorry to hear your YA Fantasy book sucketh thee ass, Kristin. =( But congrats on finishing it!

LOL @ Dana's review! I've heard about the icky situation in that book. I've also heard that even if it wasn't there, the book would be crap-which is why I'm staying far far away. Love your new word, YA-Fantasy-itis. There is definitely a lot of that going on in the YA genre. Congrats on finishing your book.

Go team, Go! Woo!

Kimberly (gravy) | 530 comments I'm not a fan of the fact we can't put half stars as part of our reviews.

I remember when COB came out and out of impulse I bought it. I never read it and ended up giving it away because I had a feeling I wouldn't read it. But anyway before I start in a circle...
ONE SITTING?
Get. Out.
I've never done that with a book before so I'm amazed.

After reading your review, I don't know if I want to read this. I get the feeling it might be alright to pass.

message 406: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (gravy) | 530 comments Kristen, I have the Wicked Lovely series ready to read. I've never read them, but I've kept up with them as they come out. Makes me wonder if I more of a collector than a reader...
Anyway, I've heard so much about this series that I was looking forward to it.
I don't know. I think with your review and Dana's review of City of Bones, I'll read the books to see what I think about them but not anytime soon. KWIM? :-)

Never? Really? Why could you have possibly wanted to be friends with me you nice girl? You are obviously centered and well adjusted and completely in control of your neurotic impulses, if you have any. ;) (Never mind...you book shop like a nut, right? OK, all is well then.)

Well, when I say one sitting, I obviously got up to grab a drink or attend to nature's call. I should admit though that I do this all the time. Hence, why I am pretty sure I am considered a nut. When I finally broke down and decided to read Harry Potter, I read the first 6 books in 5 days. I am a little manic that way.

"Who needs sleep?!?!?!" Dana screeches as she furtively glances around the room and then with shaking hands drops a fresh bag of Hawaiian Blend to drip in her IV.

I am leaving on vacation today to hang at the beach for a week, and if it wasn't for my Kindle, how would I get this week's book? Oh, the horror! I can just grab an e-copy of whatever fills this weeks bingo book, yeah!

YAY!

Team, please don't take this the wrong way, but we've got to step up our game. The 5th shelf is getting ready to be announced & we've only got one stamp. Every other team has at least two & Team #3 has four stamps. I'd like us to win this game (& have fun doing it) but we won't have a chance lagging so far behind as we are. So GO TEAM, GO! LET'S DO THIS!

And I wanted you all to know that even if we don't win this game, I appreciate all of you for partipating & staying on my team. You guys are great.

It felt like Vampire Academy took forever to get through. I guess I just wasn't into it.

Now here's a kicker, my pre-planned choice for the demon shelf, Storm Born.
Maybe this book will be less painful?

Good luck team!! Enjoy your reads!

Stargazer (Evernight, #2) by Claudia Gray or Kitty Goes to Washington (Kitty Norville, #2) by Carrie Vaughn

I'll read whichever one next. I know they are both mostly vamps and shifters...

I just finished The Vampire Voss, which I switched for my Free Space. I've also decided to read Falcondance for the YA shelf and only have about half of it left and will have it done tomorrow. Right now, it's time for sleep, haha. 2.30AM. Oh well! The Demon shelf will probably be Desire Unchained or Falling Under. Will have to think about that. ;)

Free Space

I don't think I can shorten this down at a moment and still get my feelings through, so I'll just give you ladies a link! http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 430: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (frencett) | 96 comments Feel like I always start my posts with sorry...but I'm so absent from here at the moment - feeling bad for being a part-time member!

Anyhow - I finally finished Night Embrace (Dark-Hunter, #2) for shelf Paranormal (finished 31st March) I rated it 3 stars (was nearly a 2...)

I think maybe it was just a bad pick for a bad week for me. I'm going to put it on my 'to-re-read' shelf cause I had higher expectations.

When reading series, I like the sequels to be a not of the same pattern as the previous books. That's where I think this fell down. It was just really predictable, and followed the same basic formula as the previous books....yawn! Even at the height of suspense, I was looking for more.

I have the rest of the series...sure hope it gets better....

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Finished my book for Demons.

Working for the Devil ★★½☆☆ 4/5/11

I've read two other series by Saintcrow (Strange Angels & Jill Kismet) so I'm familiar with her style by now. I was hoping WFTD would be awesomesauce, but it was totally...not. The reader is dropped into a futuristic world with no warning, no explanation, no freaking glossary! Half of the time, I didn't know WTF was going on. Dante was such a bitch. She didn't even have snarky humor to soften her crappy attitude. We're told that Dante is good friends with Gabe & Eddie, but there is almost no backstory to support it. Jace is her ex-boyfriend who she hates with all of her bitchy heart & soul, but when we find out why she hates him, it's really not that big of a deal. Japhrimel is this Super Demon who's job is to take her into hell & help her complete a job given to her by the DEVIL! Sounds interesting, right? NOT! When I wasn't confused as hells, I was bored out of my mind. The only character I liked in this book was Japh & even he got on my nerves after awhile with his broody, Angel-esque attitude. The ending was kind of creepy but I've read creepier.

Suffice it to say, I was not impressed with WFTD. Far from it. Saintcrow did not create likeable characters in this book, or even relatable ones. It's just a bunch of futuristic, wannabe badasses smoking "synth hash" & trying their best to get their asses handed to them. I'm going to give this series another go (against my better judgement) & hopefully book #2 will blow me away like WFTD didn't. Or at the very least, make me feel something. Because at this this point, all I feel is apathy towards this series. I know Saintcrow can do better than this.

Four stars!!

Review: I really like this series. Kitty is a great hero and the secondary characters are fun, too. The vampires and government intervention made it fun read. The story moved quickly and never got boring.
