I picked this author because she was on Brunonia Barry's list. Interestingly, she is very slightly like Brunonia Barry. I would class her as Brunonia Barry lite. Cute story, quick read, good beach book.

Raven Summer by David Almond

My review:
Liam and a friend out exploring the countryside are led by a noisy and insistent raven to an abandoned baby with a note saying:
Plese look after her rite. This is a childe of God.
Liam takes the little one home and she is put into foster care while the search goes on for her parents. Liam visits often and bonds with two other foster children living in the home. After a few turns of events, baby Alison moves back to Liam’s house. Her innocence coupled with the difficult backgrounds of the other foster children leads Liam to evaluate his tendency toward violence and the violence in the world around him at the beginning of the Iraq war. Raven Summer is a moving story by one of the best YA writers around, David Almond.

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

The Revolution was initially a grand uprising of the lower and middle class against the aristocrats, which fits the challenge as a type of emancipation movement of the aristocracy vs. the French citizens.

Hannah's List by Debbie Macomber
Debbie Macomber is my go-to author for comfort reads. I can always rely on reading the last page of one of her sweet romances with a smile on my face and an "Awwww..." in my heart ;o).
20.5 -- Oprah's On!
The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman
Maus I (which was part of The Complete Maus) was published in 1986. The Complete Maus was first published in 1987 and won the 1992 Pulitzer Prize. This is the second graphic novel I've read (the first being for the New Horizons task of this challenge) and all I can say is WOW! These are not comic books. Or at least not comic books as I remember them (there's not a ZAP! or a POW! to be found). The two I've read so far (the other one was Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel) are memoirs--with pictures--drawn by the people whom the story affected (and who also happen to be professional comic book artists). And, as such, were very powerful. Maus just kind of left me speechless...

Option C: short book = A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway (191 pages)
Option D: dark book = Black Boy by Richard Wright This is not "the most depressing book of all time". It was somewhat depressing since it was a true account of the author growing up in the Jim Crow south during the 1920s, but I knew better things were coming for this man, so it wasn't too depressing to read about his struggles as a young black man.

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris: AND Mrs Harris Goes to New York: The Adventures of Mrs Harris by Paul Gallico

Total points to date 160
I was delighted to stumble across a pink covered book in the library which I knew I'd enjoy. I had read these two stories before - Paul Gallico being a favouite author of mine - but I didn't remember them in detail. I love this book! Gently written and very funny, and telling us a lot about human nature too.

I really enjoyed this story! I plan to pick up the rest of her books ASAP! This was a nice break for this challenge. It seems I managed to fill my TBR list for this challenge with lots of "deep and damaged" books. It's exhasting.
