Wendy UK (wendyuk) | 724 comments 20.4 - The Plot Line Thickens

A Pale View of the Hills by Kazuo Ishiguro

I like those slow moving films where nothing much happens! The sort with beautiful scenery which are character based rather than plot based. The kind of thing where an old person reminisces about their past and through flashbacks and dialogue we learn about the events and relationships that have made them the person they are. This book is just like that and I really enjoyed it!

5.10- Name That Car - Powder and Patch by Georgette Heyer. My car really IS named Patch! It has a good reason too...it used to be held together with duct tape, until I could afford to go have it fixed. Now the duct tape is long gone, but the name stuck.

10.7 - City Lights - Paris: The Biography of a City by Colin Jones

15.6 - One Hit Wonders - The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town by John Grisham. I didn't like it.

Whatever You Do, Don't Run: True Tales of a Botswana Safari Guide by Peter Allison
4 stars

This was a great read. I wasn't surprised that Allison's stories about his interactions with wildlife, including sharing the bathroom with a water buffalo and having a stand-off with a male lion while holding a case of beer, were fascinating. What surprised me, was how much humor, detail, and love for nature he demonstrated while conveying the tales.

Twelfth Night

This one is funny and train-wreck-ish at the same time. Plenty of headdesk moments (y'know, the kind where you beat your head on the desk because people are being dumb). And I like how I can understand it, despite the archaic language. Yay Shakespeare!

I got South Amercia, and Pablo Neruda was originally from Chile. It was interesting to read both of these, since they were from completely different parts of his career. That is absolutely ridiculous! I vote to try to hold a festival anyway in an alternate venue to spite stupid people everywhere! Either that or do something to honor her during Banned Books Week this year.

I think the same thing happened to her last year, too, and she wrote a poem, "Manifesto," for Banned Books Week in response to what happened. I love that poem so much that I printed off the poster, laminated it, and hung it in my office. It's thirty-one varieties of epic.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3040 comments The author came to our school last year for Author Day for the book "Crank". I think that canceling a festival because of one book is stupid. It's like we should encourage children to read but only "certain" "approved" books and who gets to decide which books are "approved"? Is this really the message we went to send to the next generation?
