I just completed task 5.2 The Blockbuster Books Task with The Vampire Academy written by: Rachelle Meads.
Completed task 25.2. I chose C. Read a book with the word WHO in the title AND a book with a person's name in the title.I read The Girl Who Chased the Moon and Loving Frank. I loved the former and was sort of let down by the latter. The first 200+ pages were good and then it just sort of irritated me.

I forgot to include my review of The Undaunted for 15.3 so I am adding it now. The Undaunted is about Mormon pioneers who are asked to settle an area in Southern Utah near the four corners area. The novel described their journey and everything they had to go through to get there. I gave the book 5 stars. It was a part of my church history that I didn't know about. I thought it was an inspirational book and was anxious to see what happened to the main characters.I also forgot to mention that it was over 750 pages.

I finished 5.1, Heat Wave, with
Too Hot to Handle by Elizabeth Lowell
5.5, Dropping Names, with
The Weight of Silence by GR author Heather Gudenkauf
This book was a Goodreads Choice Award nominee. I liked it, but I guess my expectations were too high. I thought it was predictable and the prologue undermined the suspense
10.5, Bring the Beach, with
by Colson Whitehead
This coming-of-age novel didn't have much of a plot arc, but it did have much humor, spot-on cultural references, and subtle, but powerful themes of family, identity, race, and class. I think it deserved all the praise it got last year
10.9, Learn Something, with
Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in Photography by Bryan Peterson
This task inspired me to take photography lessons- they have helped tweak my technique- this book was really helpful in improving my vision- another book that now looks like a porcupine with post-its sticking out all over. Peterson sets out exercises to try new things- I was crawling all over the yard yesterday shooting up, down, over, and through :)
Thanks again, Cynthia for inspiring me to put my books down for a minute

Completed another task - 20.2 - A Trip To The Past - Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt: A Novel by Anne Rice, which took place any time between 2 AD and 10 AD - depending on what literature and theories you read about the date of Jesus' birth
At times, slightly interesting, but mostly slow moving and boring. I found the most interesting part of the book to be Anne Rice's author notes at the end of the book and this was the reason I gave the book 3 stars - I was leaning more towards 2 stars. There is a second book, and a third that has yet to be released, both of which I'll probably read just to finish the trilogy.
I've completed two more tasks. I changed my first name on Goodreads to Karen GHHS(the HS where I work as the teacher librarian) to avoid confusion because it looked like there might be two Karens from WA.I finished 30.1: Birthdays and Birthmonths
January: Architecture:
Let There Be Light: A Book About Windows by James Cross Giblin
(Traces the development of the window throughout history. My fathers family had a stained glass business in Pennsylvania). See my blog review for pictures of family stained glass:
Let There Be Light: A Book About Windows by James Cross Giblin
Monday: Novel in Verse:
All the Broken Pieces by Ann E. Burg
I enjoyed both of these books. I learned a lot about the evolution of windows and my family's business, and experienced the emotions of the post Vietnam War period.
I also completed 10.4 Roll the Dice
My Roll: 115
Book: Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick, 122 pages
I know this seems like a lucky roll (and it was a great little book!), but it was actually tough to find a book on my shelves in the right page range. Then when I looked at the editions on Goodreads, they all exceeded the limit, even though my copy that I bought from England was 122, so here are some pictures:

Hello!Task 20.10 - Group Read - THE ABC MURDERS by Agatha Christie.
I made three posts to the discussion, #10, 11 & 12.
Thanks Cynthia!
5.7 Transportation: Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, 529pp read 6/5/2010.The form of transportation is a ship on the cover.
25.4 Writer who is a Cancer and book with NOUN in title from pg 31: The Gates of Sleep and Ham Bones, by Mercedes Lackey and Carolyn Haines, 389pp read 6/6/2010.
The connecting word is "ham".
30.1 South America non-fiction and Noir fiction:: The River of Doubt and Already Dead by Charlie Huston and Candice Millard, 258pp of noir detective story read 6/5/2010.Already Dead is a noir vampire book, if one can twist their mind around that! All the noir tropes are in place - the foul-mouthed, hard-living detective who is truly a good guy but has to pretend he is really BA, the "fallen" girlfriend with a heart of gold, the sleazy informers, the street children that the detec cannot save, slimy rich people and mobsters in the background - yep it is all there, wrapped up in an unusual package. None of Jim Butcher's self- deprecating humor is there, this is true noir with all its complications and undercurrents. Recommend for noir fans, not necessarily vampire fans.
Carolyn Haines is a Goodreads author.
Middlesex is 529 pages, can I claim those two tickets?

Task 20.6 Supporting Goodreads Authors- Beyond the Highland Mist - Karen Marie Morning
Why? - Over on the Amazon discussion boards questions quite often come up, I want to read a paranormal romance, but I don't like vampires, so what can I read? - this is one of the books that is often recommended as it features faes and time travel to 16th century Scotland. I hadn't read this book until now, but it had been sitting in my TBR pile for close to a year - but ended up really enjoying it. It has all the elements of a great romance novel - hot and steamy with a HEA (Happily Ever After). I've heard people say that this book is slow compared to later ones in the series, and yet I still enjoyed it extremely and will definately be reading the rest in the series. If you like audiobooks, it is narrated by Phil Gigante who is one of the more well-known and excellent narrator's out there.

Likewise if a person reads a book and no one is there to see them...did the book ever get read? 20.1 - The Most Improved Player - Deirdre's Task - Sweltering Summer Days
Think of the name of your favorite ice cream, and read a book whose title contains at least one of the words from the ice cream name. The word in the book title should exactly match the word in the ice cream title.
My favorite ice cream is Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. I read: Mint Julep Murder (1995) by Carolyn Hart (Mass Market Paperback, 256 pages) (Death on Demand, #9). It’s a cozy mystery, about as plausible as Angela Lansbury’s series “Murder She Wrote”. Hart is also a big-time name dropper, mentioning 16 different mystery novels. Hart’s books would have been perfect for 2010 Spring Challenge 30.6!

I finished task 10.4 - I had rolled a 121, so I read The Red Pony, my version had 120 pgs. The Red Pony was OK, but in my copy it was paired with a short story which was brilliant IMO. I did not know Steinbeck had short stories. I also finished task 15.9 by reading The Reader. I debate with myself who "the reader" refers to, but lets just say it is the narrator to make this easy. I am very different than the narrator. I don't brood as much as he does, I just don't take life as seriously as he does, but that is to be expected because the different lives we are leading. He identifies as the reader because his life centers around someone who cannot read, whereas I became a reader because my shear love of fiction and knowledge.
