Summer Challenge 2010 Completed Tasks (do NOT delete any posts in this thread)
20.9 - Catching Fire - ★★★★★ I also watched Food, Inc. on Netflix (available as 'Watch Instantly' for any other Netflix users). It is a documentary that appeared on the Indie movie list linked in the task. I was disturbed by it.
I also failed to mention in my last post regarding 20.1 that Chris Cleave is a Goodreads author.
Points: 40
20.7 For Those We Love to Hate: The Collector by John Fowles. This novel, written in the 1960's, is about an obsession and a crime. The main character kidnaps a girl after obsessing over her from afar. He wants her to love him, so he thinks that he can isolate her and build a relationship with her, all while holding her captive in a country house. The first half is told from his perspective, and the second part is told from hers. It is fascinating and creepy to put oneself in the minds of the perpetrator and the victim. While slightly dated in its telling, I found it to be current in theme and in its psychological overtones.Total Points: 40

Finished 25.2 Q&A by reading The Penguin Who Knew Too Much by Donna Andrews (3*). A cute who done it about a zookeeper who is murdered and found in the lead characters basement. A unique cast of characters including her father who fosters some of the zoo animals as the zoo grounds have been taken over by the bank. An assortment of animals eventually find their way to her farm. Then I read How Nancy Drew Saved My Life (3*). This book was about a nanny who takes a job in Iceland to escape her past. I felt that it fell apart in the end but still gave it 3*.

The song is Kokomo by The Beach Boys. In this song, they sing all about different islands in the Caribbean and this book is set mainly on a small island in the Caribbean. This song reminds me of summer because it talks about islands and beaches and going on vacation "to get away from it all."

Meatloaf: To Hell and Back an autobiography
I really loved this album. My favorite was "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" I was in my teens and this was considered "devil music" by my grandmother. My mom and us 4 kids piled in the car, drove through all the back roads of Maine. She was usually drinking a beer, smoking, and singing at the top of her lungs. We usually sang too. What a noise!! One of the few good memories I have of my family.

My summer song is Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero." Whenever the weather got warm & school was almost out, my friend & I would always drive around with the windows down & "car dance" while playing this song. It was always a sign of summer.
This song describes the main male character of this book perfectly - allusions to a Greek god, strong, fast, rides a "fiery steed," is "fresh from the fight," etc. I swear this song was written for him-LOL!

5 POINT TASK5.3 - S.U.M.M.E.R
For this task read a book written by an author whose initials are found in the word Summer.
Behind Closed Doors: Her Father's House and Other Stories of Sicily, Maria Messina.
15 POINT TASK
15.10 - “Other Things May Change Us, But We Start And End With Family.” - Anthony Brandt
Summertime is often the time when families get together to catch up on things so for this task let's read....
A. A book that has the word Family in the title OR a book with a specific family member in the title i.e. Sister, Brother, Cousin etc.
AND
B. Tell the group at least one thing that you love about your own family or the family member from your title.
A. The Dead Man's Brother, Roger Zelazny.
B. My whole family is pretty cool, and we all get along (now, at least), but my oldest brother and I are especially close. We packed up and moved to another state together about seven years ago because we both needed a change and figured it was safest to do it together to be able to keep an eye on each other. He's a reader like me, which makes for fun conversations. We live in the same town, but our work schedules don't match so we don't hang out as much as we would like. But when we do, it usually involves a trip to the library and/or bookstores, a lot of snooty book talk, and dinner. Being able to raid his library whenever I want has its perks as well.
20 POINT TASK
20.7 - I Like Big Books And I Cannot Lie - Dionisia's Task - For Those We Love To Hate
Read a book written from a villain's point of view.
The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis.
TOTAL POINTS: 40/950.
Finished 10.2 by reading The Girl Who Played Go by Shan Sa. I really wanted to like this book but it fell flat for me. It is told in alternating chapters. The female character plays go and is Chinese living in Manchuria during the Japanese invasion in the late 30's. The male is a Japanese soldier who plays go with the female while trying to be a spy for his regiment. It was well written but not much action. I gave it 2*.
Finished:10.6Know Your Rights: Dream Lucky: When FDR was in the White House, Count Basie was on the radio, and everyone wore a hat... by Roxane Orgill, which is an account of the two years in the 1930's when Count Basie was moving up in the music world from Kansas City jazz scene to New York City. Also discusses other people and events from Joe Louis to Eleanor Roosevelt.
