Mansfield by C.K. Stead who is from New Zealand and:
A Hilltop on the Marne by Mildred Aldrich written while she was living in France during WW I.

Angel was a complete waste of my life to read.
All Quiet on the Western Front made this task worth doing for me since I was pretty insistent on not reading it and then discovered that it was brilliantly written.

5.9 Read a book in bed
*A Man Named Dave: A Story of Triumph and Forgiveness - READ 5.3.10
My Rating: ✭✭✭✭
This was the final book in the trilogy. I actually read all three in bed as my night-time reading. I'm always amazed at what human beings can do to one another, especially what parents can do to their children; but I'm also astounded by the resiliency of some of their victims.
20.6 Favorite Series
A. Favorite Series novel
*From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris - READ 5.16.10
My Rating: ✭✭✭✭✭
B. Post summary of series - The Sookie Stackhouse series is a fun romp through the paranormal world. This is the 8th book in the series and I think they keep getting better. I love the distinct nature of each of the supes Harris creates. The added mystery, sexual tension and humor make this series a winning combination.

15.6 Goodreads Friends
A. Friends Popular books: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold 4*
Good choice since I really want to see the movie and prefer to read the book first.
B. Friends of Friends: Marley & Me: Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan 4*
This is another movie that I want to see and am glad to have a reason to read the book first.
15.7 Seven Deadly Sins: Greed was the one I selected:
And Then the Roof Caved In: How Wall Street Greed and Stupidity Brought Capitalism to Its Knees by David Faber 4*
This was a fascinating book which explained in laymen's language the manipulations and processes that led to our latest financial crisis. Greed was rampant throughout the entire chain of speculative lending that produced so many failed mortgage loans. The most interesting part of the book was the expansiveness of the greed - it was not just the Wall Street component exploiting the mortgage market but the home buyers who willingly lied to get mortgages that everyone knew would fail, the fly-by-night lending companies whose major objective was to close as many loans as possible, and the investment bankers who created complex securities agreements with no financial basis behind them. On top of that, governmental agencies who took no responsibility for monitoring the process. Great book for trying to understand the story behind this crisis.
15.8 Favorite Artist: Sunflowers by Sheramy Bundrick 4*
This was a good book about Van Gogh - even though it was fiction, it was a good depiction of his life and the tragedy of his mental illness. While he may not be my favorite artist, his painting of Sunflowers is my favorite painting. It is one of the few paintings that is so universally liked that it has been reproduced in many forms. Such a sad end to such a brilliant artist.

20.4 Our Histories
1) part B - A fictional "family saga" book: White Teeth by Zadie Smith 3/29/10
2) part C - A fictional book about your local area or region: Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis. 5/16/10
I live in Los Angeles and actually went to one of the universities mentioned throughout the book. This was a very depressing--though not altogether inaccurate--depiction of my city.
25.4 The Name Game
part A: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher 4/19/10
Even though he's a boy and I'm a girl, we share the first name "Jay" :)
part B: Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang by Chelsea Handler 3/28/10
Not my favorite of her books, but entertaining nonetheless!
25.7 The Gods Must be Crazy
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan 5/15/10
I know this is a much beloved series, and while I thought it was cute and a good refresher of Greek mythology, all these magic/fantasy YA series feel like Harry Potter-lite to me. Oh, how I miss discovering those for the first time!
25.9 Spring Break
Heart and Soul by Maeve Binchy 3/12/10
I was in high school from 1995-99. "Circle of Friends" came out as a movie in 1995. "Tara Road" was picked as an Oprah Book Club selection in 1999.
30.3 Birth and Renewal
part A: Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage and Elizabeth Gilbert 4/15/10
Released on 1/5/10. Really enjoyed this continuation of "Eat, Pray, Love"...and was shocked when two days after finishing I got engaged to my boyfriend of over 6 years!
part B:
Pictures at a Revolution: Five Movies and the Birth of the New Hollywood by Mark Harris 3/31/10
**Mark Harris is a Goodreads Author**
An interesting look at the 1967 Oscar race for those of you who enjoy film history. Do I get bonus points for fitting the word "birth" in to my "re-" book? :)
30.5 Six Degrees of Separation
part A: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins 4/9/10
A part of me wishes I would have waited to read this for next season's Group Reads task. I just didn't get why it's so popular and would have loved to discuss with people.
part B: Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon 5/13/10
I love David Simon so much! Fascinating read!
Here's the connection between the two books:
Suzanne Collins wrote The Hunger Games, which I'd like to read off my TBR
-Nina Jacobson bought the rights to The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
-Donnie Wahlberg starred in "The Sixth Sense," which Nina Jacobson was the studio executive at Universal
-Mark Wahlberg is Donnie Wahlberg's brother
-Leonardo DiCaprio starred with Mark Wahlberg in The Departed
-Dennis Lehane wrote Shutter Island, which became a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio
-David Simon, the creator and Executive Producer of HBO's The Wire, hired Dennis Lehane as a staff writer on that show
David Simon wrote the book "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets"
(connection approved in the task thread)
30.6 Character References
part A: Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman by Jon Krakauer 4/11/10
part B: Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War by Mark Bowden 4/15/10
Krakauer mentions at the end of "Where Men Win Glory" that "Black Hawk Down" is another example of a book detailing a cover-up/bungling of a US military operation.
50 pt - Luck Be A Lady
I rolled a 2 (graphic novel) and a 3 (Bio/Autobio)
part A: Maus I: A Survivor's Tale: My Father Bleeds History by Art Spiegelman 4/18/10
part B: Night by Elie Wiesel 4/17/10
Since the total was 5, one of these had to be a 5-star book from someone's list of a group I'm in. "Maus I" is a 5-star read off Sara <}'s list from this very group! Very glad I discovered and read this, would have never picked up a graphic novel otherwise!

BIG BOOK TICKET (500 pg)

Read A Song for Summer in which the main character is housekeeper at a boarding school.
20.3 Mental Health
Read A Long Way Down which is about depression. The depression suffered by the characters in the book bore little resemblance to the spells of depression I occasionally get. Which probably shows that there is a range of forms that depression can take.

20.6 The Summer Before by Ann M. Martin
Part of the Baby-Sitter’s Club series, which was my favorite series growing up. It follows 6 preteen girls who form a baby sitting club as they take on sitting jobs, boys, and growing up. This series helped make me a reader – I used to race out with my allowance money to buy the next book in the series – so I was excited that there’s a new book to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series. It was just as fun as I remember but, wow, I feel old! Not to mention that these girls have been in 7th grade since I was in 7th grade – nearly 20 years ago!
20.7 The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein * Goodreads Author*
My husband is as avid a race fan as I am a reader, which means that our house is littered with racing paraphernalia, including giant stacks of racing magazines. I’m on a spring cleaning kick, and have made more than a few trips to the recycling bin with stacks of magazines.
Not only is this book about racing, but every racing location mentioned in it is a place my husband has either been or has talked about going. I passed the book (which I adored) on to him – maybe he’ll read it instead of magazines?!

Here is a quick synopsis of the series:
The slum dwellers of Kyralia distrust and harbour intense hatred of the Magician's Guild. However Sonea, who grew up in the slums, has to learn to trust them once the magicians discover her magical abilities and attempts to recruit her to the Guild. The series follows Sonea's story from being a slum girl to becoming a powerful Guild Magician. Of course this is not an easy journey and Sonea faces many trials and tribulations!

25.6 - BJ Rose's Task - This Day In History
Go to this website: http://www.datesinhistory.com/
Scroll to your birth month and click on the day of your birth
A. Read a book about an event that took place on that day in history (other than births or deaths), or a book about the topic of that event. For Part A, events must be prior to 1950
AND
B. Read a contemporary book (1950 to present) that takes place in the same area of the world as Book A, OR covers the same topic as Book A
C. When posting, include the event you chose from the website, along with the books you read.
----
1893 Lizzie Borden is acquitted of murdering her stepmother and father
So for A. Forty Whacks by David Kent
and for B. Outrage by Vincent Bugliosi (OJ SImpson also gets aquitted of a brutal murder in the US despite the majority believing he was guilty)

So.. I read The Maltese Falcon because it features drinking during the prohibition era and 4th of July because it is a detective book that takes place in San Francisco.
25.10 I read Mrs. Dalloway and The Hours.

25.2 Read Elizabeth Kostova's first and second books, and I'm not really sure what inspired me as they both monsters, especially when done on audio, 25 and 17 discs respectively. Her first was The Historian, and quite honestly by the time this one was over I didn't care what happened I just wanted it to be finished, so I was sure that I was going to like her second one, The Swan Thieves better. However, though the Historian when into agonizing detail and relayed every word of every historical document she could find, I actually liked the characters. In her second one, she learned to be slightly more concise so I still had somewhat of an interest in the plot, but I never really liked or cared about the characters. So I'm actually going to give my vote to book #1, but I won't be tackling anything else of hers for a very long time.

The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue (3.5 stars)
I rarely read fantasy books, but I was drawn to the cover of this book. Then, when I read the premise, it sounded unique, so I thought I'd give it a try. The writing is beautiful and atmospheric. I wrote quite a few quotes down. However, I never felt attached to any of the characters, and the plot was a little thin. It did inspire me, though, to read more of this genre.

20.6 Favorite Series Hex Marks the Spot. It is a fun series with a female lead that hates her job and suddenly finds herself with a new job she loves with a boss she befriends, who just happens to claim she's a witch. This is much like the Damsgaard series, except that the protagonist in this series was raised Catholic and is trying to reconcile her upbringing with the new truth she finds around her.

Review:
Ed is just an ordinary American teenager. He lives a boring life with normal friends and a fairly normal job. Sometimes he wishes he could be anyone but himself. He gets his wish when a beautiful girl walks in and reads his incorrect name tag which reads Sergio. Ed sees this as a chance to reinvent himself. I really like this book because it showed how things aren't always as they seem in real life.

I preferred Outlander to Dragonfly in Amber. I liked the setting of Outlander better (DIA didn't really get all that great until it switched back to the setting of the orignal book in the series). Outlander also didn't drag at the beginning like DIA, & it wasn't left with such a cliff-hanger like Gabaldon's second book.

15.2 - Anzac Day
A. A novel that takes place in Australia or New Zealand, written by an author from one of those countries, or a non-fictional book about one of the two countries.
The Lieutenant by Kate Grenville (Hardcover, 320 pages) From Wikipedia: Kate Grenville (born 14 October 1950) is an Australian novelist and teacher of creative writing. She is past winner of the Orange Prize in 2001 for her novel The Idea of Perfection. (which I read a few years ago, 4 stars). The Lieutenant is loosely based on an actual historical figure from the 18th century, a man named William DawesOne-sentence summary of the novel: “You do not learn a language without entering into a relationship with the people who spoke it with you.” I liked the way Grenville relates only necessary details. The story itself is quiet and cerebral, and sometimes my attention wandered. 3 stars.
B. A novel or non-fictional account of World War I.
I read a non-fictional account: The First World War by Hew Strachan (Paperback, 384 pages) (940.3) Most World War One books focus on Germany, France and England. This one had less of those three nations and more of how the war was fought in the rest of the world. The text was overly dry and not as explanatory as it needed to be. On the plus side, dramatic and unique photographs from World War I are included.

10.6 Read a book that relates to one of the films nominated for this year's best picture.
I read The Last Lecture , which relates to the movie Up. The Last Lecture is all about Pausch's realizations as he's quickly dying of pancreatic cancer. He decides to impart some wisdom on his students (he's a lecturer), and much of this wisdom centers on not being afraid to aim for your childhood dreams. For example, as a child, Pausch always wanted to be a Disney Imagineer (his work on virtual reality led him to a 6-month sabbatical as an Imagineer!).
My connection between this book and the movie Up relies on the producer's comments at the link provided with the task (go to that web address, click on the movie Up, and then click on the link that says "Click here to read their personal story"). Up Producer Jonas Rivera always dreamed of being an animator for Disney. He worked toward his dreams and now works for Pixar. Rivera followed a lot of the same principles that Pausch lived and shared with his students during his last lecture.

The Harry Potter series is my favorite series and this is the final book in it. Here's the summary:

On the train there, he meets his two best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The seven years that follow are filled with adventure and danger as Voldemort, the evil wizard who kills Harry's parents, returns to try to take over the Wizarding world and Harry is the only one who can stop him.

A. Read a book first published in 2010. The book may be part of a series; however, it must be the FIRST BOOK in the series. Stand-alone books are fine.
Ex: Truly, Madly or Alice I Have Been
B. Read a book (again, any genre is fine) with the prefix "re-" in the title or subtitle.
Ex: Rewind or Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
I read The Candidate by Andrew Young and Golden: A Retelling of Rapunzel by Cameron Dokey.
I must say I found everything about The Candidate distasteful -- I have seen Andrew and Cherie Young on many talk shows and always found them as repellent as they found John Edwards. None of the players in this scheme came out clean. I am not sure what that makes me, having read the book. Nothing good. I am glad I read the library copy.
