Spring Challenge 2010 Completed Tasks

25.1: I'd love to have an apartment in New York City in the future (why is rent so damn expensive?!); I read One Fifth Avenue. I want to live in Manhattan because I'm in my twenties and i think NYC is fantastic. I live in Jersey City right now, but Manhattan is so much more convenient. It would be even better if I become a multi-millionaire and could afford some of the apartments in 1 Fifth, the penthouse of which sells for $15 million in the book...
25.9: The Lost Symbol; I graduated High School in 2004, and that was the peak of "The Da Vinci Code" fame, both written by Dan Brown.

Several people are SOO close to finishing. Hopefully for the holiday weekend you can finish.

I'm sure you will finish shortly! Hope you get some reading time in today!

30.3A Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
30.3B-1 Return of the Bunny Suicides by Andy Riley (96pp)
30.3B-2 Return to the Fractured Planet by Dave Stone (256pp)
20.6A The Deception of the Emerald Ring by Lauren Willig (387 pp)
20.6B This is a highly amusing series that illuminated both the modern era and various historical periods. While not accurate - it is very tounge in cheek - it does incite interest in an entertaining manner and is good for lighthearted reading (or listening as in my case).

How Not to Be Popular is not an average teen read. While most girls long desperately to become popular, Sugar Magnolia Dempsey longs to be the opposite..."
Since you have a private account I can't message you directly about this so hopefully you will see this - you already claimed points for 20.1 with The Loser's Guide to Life and Love- A.E. Cannon so you can't get credit twice.

10.8 "I could have gone on flying through space forever...": The Gap into Conflict: The Real Story by Stephen R. Donaldson
20.6 Favorite Series: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Somehow I totally forgot about this task! It's really hard to pick one favorite series, so let's call the Ender Saga one of my favorite series. I think part of the reason why I am so enamored of this series is because I originally listened to the (exquisitely produced) audiobook. Card studied theater, and his books lend themselves to oral interpretations. Anyway, more to the point. The Ender Saga begins with 6 year old genius Ender Wiggin who may just be humankind's last hope for survival. In Ender's Game, we see him attending battle school and being shaped into the weapon humankind needs in order to win the war against the Buggers. The rest of the series deals with some unexpected consequences of his victory. The second book, Speaker for the Dead, is absolutely one of my favorite books of all time.
Total Points: 395
Tasks Completed: 22
Books by Goodreads authors: 3
Big Books: 2 (500+ and 750+)

The series is about a group of warrior vampires (all sounds delicious) that find a mate, one vampire a book, while protecting "civilian" vampires from the evil "lessers". The books are full of suspense and romance. I get so attached to the characters I have to keep reading to see what happens to them!
Tasks 6/27

Total 70 points (and 6 days)
As a side note I was going to put one of the books as the 25.1 What you want in your future task. I would love a vampire warrior haha but I decided to stick with these two tasks instead!

30.6 - Donna Jo's Task - As Suggested By Liz Brooklyn - Character References
A. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) Larsson, Stieg
B. Pippi Longstocking Lindgren, Astrid
Larsson's book references Astrid Lindgren and Pippi several times. (I have to admit that I borrowed this task idea from another challenge member, Thanks!)

10.2 Three/Four/Five
Secrets of Eden: A Novel by Chris Bohjalian 5/25/10
This book had a rating of 3.34 when I started it on 5/17/10. I really enjoyed it and think it would work well for next season's challenge task about Forensic Thrillers. I know I'm looking forward to picking up another of his books!
**Chris Bohjalian is a Goodreads Author**
15.3 At Least Once in a Lifetime
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield 5/24/10
Another great read that I'm so glad the Challenge encouraged me to finally pick up! This was #246 on page 4 of books everyone should read. It's hard to say that this is something that EVERYone should read...it's a really enjoyable and absorbing book that's incredibly well written--I was wholly entertained--but I can't put my finger on something I learned or how I feel different after finishing. For pure entertainment, I'd highly recommend it. For a once in a lifetime read, that's debatable. The book I would put on the top of the list is Great Expectations because it is the most classic example of literature and enjoyable (and different) for every age. I'm surprised it's not higher up!
Switching around some tasks here at the end...

Task 5.4 In the news...Goodreads Newsletter
I read Lift.
The author wrote this as a journal...It was really good and left me wanting to know what happened next.
5 points

I read Shopaholic Takes Manhattan and The Lost Symbol.
1. Shopaholic takes Manhattan is written by Sophie Kinsella.
2. Sophie Kinsella also wrote Confessions of a Shopaholic which was made into a movie.
3. Joan Cusack play's the main character's mother in the movie.
4. She is also in Toy Story 3 with Tom Hanks.
5. Tom Hanks is in the Movie Angels and Demons.
6. Angels and Demons is written by Dan Brown who also wrote the Lost Symbol.
Total Points: 150

I was expecting this book to be great since everyone and their mother has read it at some point in their life and has high praise for it. When I told a friend (who'd obviously read and enjoyed it during her childhood) I'd finished it and found it disappointing, she gasped with shock! I guess I'm spoiled by the 'Ramona Quimby' series and the fact that Bev Cleary really knows how to write the way children think. I found this book so-so and main character 'Peter Hatcher' to be a bit whiney and unlikeable.
25.1 Michelle's Task: Read a book with something really want to have featured on the cover. Leaving Unknown by Kerry Reichs I really want to take a western U.S. road trip!

Congrats! Btw, I bet we are neighbors -- both Indianapolis!"
Go, Hoosiers!

In honor of Earth Day which falls on April 22 complete one of the following options...
C. Recycle - For this option: read a book from your personal collection and when your finished pass it on so another person can read it.
Billy Joel - A Personal Bio by Peter Gambacinni
Gave it to a friend

5.9 - “I think even lying on my bed I can still do something.”
In honor of Dorothea Dix (April 4, 1802 – July 17, 1887), an American activist on behalf of the indigent insane whose quote inspired this task...Spend a day in bed reading the book of your choice
The Dead Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan

March, April, and May are the 3rd, 4th, and 5th months of the year - Read a book whose average rating is made up of the numbers 3,4, and 5 (i.e. no other number can be found in it so 3.34 is fine while 2.35 is not). (The book must have that rating when you start to read it - if the rating changes after you or other Goodreads members review it...i.e. if the score is higher or lower than 3.45 when you post the task it will still count.)
The Gardner Heist - Ulrich Boser

For this task you must read at least 850 pages from your TBR pile. You may not use any new purchases for this task!' (If you don't have enough pages in the books that you own in your TBR pile you may use library books or free ebooks).
Poison Study - Maria V Snyder 416
It Happened One Knife - Jeffrey Cohen 304
Bloodsucking Fiends - Christopher Moore 300

I think you must have the wrong task for this because 15.5 is the poetry task and that book isn't poetry.

I read The Midnight Club since I share James Patterson's last name, and I read Sarah's Key , where Sarah is a character in the book.
25.5 Read 850+ pages off your to-read list.
I read Fear the Worst (544 pages) and The Taken (323 pages) for a total of 867 pages off my to-read list.

Task 20.10 - Group Read: The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman (5/25/10) + posted in group discussion
Task 25.2 - Stephanie Anne – Debut + 2nd Book: A Bride Most Begrudging by Deeanne Gist (5/4/10) AND The Measure of a Lady by Deeanne Gist (5/5/10)
I definitely preferred the second book for a couple different reasons: The time period in which book 2 took place (1850 California) was MUCH more interesting to me than the first book (1643 Virginia Colony), the writing was better (ESPECIALLY the dialogue!). I really enjoyed both stories though, except that if you're writing a historical fiction CHRISTIAN book, you HAVE to use the King James Version of the Bible and NOT some other version that wasn't invented until the 1980s! What the heck?? That was my biggest beef with the books... So obviously they were pretty good! ;)Task 25.4 - Diane – Author shares my name, character name title: Clementine by Sara Pennypacker (5/6/10) AND Being Nikki by Meg Cabot (3/23/10)
Task 25.8 - Helen – Animal POV, Relationships: Obi, Gerbil on the Loose by Michael Delaney (4/12/10) AND James Herriot's Favorite Dog Stories by James Herriot (5/24/10)
Task 30.2 - Cheryl TX – Bluebonnet/Lone Star: Alvin Ho Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things by Lenore Look (3/8/10) AND Girlfriend Material by Melissa Kantor (5/22/10)
Task 30.3 - Ms. Anderson – Published 2010; Re- Title: Hard to Get by Emma Carlson Berne (4/14/10) AND Princess Ben: Being a Wholly Truthful Account of Her Various Discoveries and Misadventures, Recounted to the Best of Her Recollection, in Four Parts by Catherine Gilbert Murdock (5/10/10)
Task 50.1 - Ms. Anderson – 6,6,3: Splendid by Julia Quinn (4/21/10) and The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (5/12/10)
I rolled two 6s (mystery/thriller and short story collection), with a sum of 12, which meant I got to reroll 1 die... I rolled a 3, which meant I either had to read a romance AND mystery/thriller OR a bio/autobio AND short story collection. I picked the first combination: romance & mystery.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

25.4 - Diane's Task - The Name Game
A. Read a book written by an author that shares your first, middle, OR last name. (My name is Diane Joyce Phillips. I might choose a book by Diane Setterfield, Joyce Carol Oates, James Joyce, or Susan Elizabeth Phillips). Spelling variations are acceptable (i.e. Dianne instead of Diane) as are name shortenings (i.e. Sue for Susan).
OR
Sleepwalking In Daylight by Elizabeth Flock-5/1
Middle name is Elizabeth
C. Read a book with a character’s name in the title (i.e. Sarah’s Key or Dear John. Not acceptable: Breaking Dawn, since there isn’t a character named Dawn in the book).

The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks-5/8
I was in college for 10 years and he was def. popular during those years (1998-2008).

20.1 - The Most Improved Player - Cindy AL - April Fool -
Barrel Fever: Stories and Essays by David Sedaris
So, Sedaris's essays are way funnier than his short stories. Why is that? I think there is something of self-deprecation in the essays that tempers his twisted sense of humor. Barrel Fever is mostly stories, though. Thumbs down for all the fiction except the holiday letter. Said letter is in Holidays on Ice, too. Better to just read Holidays on Ice!

Task 50.1
Book 1: [Book: V For Vendetta] - Alan Moore
Book 2: [Book: Airhead] - Meg Cabot
V for Vendetta movie starred Natalie Portman. Meg Cabot wrote [Book: The Princess Diaries], which starred Anne Hathaway. The two women both attended the 81st Annual Academy Awards (2009).
Task 25.4
Book 1: [Book: Guilty Pleasures] - Laurell K. Hamilton (the name I got from the generator was Laurie Swaney)
Book 2: [Book: Being Nikki] - Meg Cabot
Task 20.6 - [Book: Hunger Games] - Suzanne Collins
A little gem of a young adult novel I discovered about children who are forced fight for their lives in a tournament. The plot line is interesting and engaging, and the idea behind the book is fresh and original. Best of all, the book comes with a healthy dose of intrigue and there is little gore. An absolute pleasure to read that will keep you coming back for more.

Sloth: The Seven Deadly Sins by Wendy Wasserstein
This book was, in fact, about sloth the sin -- written as a parody of self-help books, touting sloth as the best way to live. I'm not sure I'd say sloth is such a deadly sin, except that laziness is an easy excuse to avoid virtue -- which (I think?) is why it ended up on that list as it is.
