The Friday Night Knitting Club
Knit Two
both by Kate Jacobs

Task: 25.2--first/second books by an author

I really preferred the first book...the development of the characters was much better in my opinion. It was neat in the second book to see Dakota growing up, etc., but I just did not feel like I learned as much about the characters in the second book as I did in the first.

Task: 20.6--book from favorite series

This is one of my favorite series. These books are an easy read...a little mystery, some humor, and every once in a while, a little romance. This is a lighter mystery read than Cornwell, Patterson, etc.

Alice (aliceg) | 424 comments I have read the first two (and so far the only published) books by Sadie Jones. The first one, which won the Orange Prize, is called The Outcast and the second one which was published in paperback just this month is called Small Wars. I thought that both of the books were brilliant. She has a strong voice and despite some very dramatic and harrowing scenes in both books she tells them in a very down to earth and distant way. This adds to the drama. I preferred Small Wars as I felt that her voice was stronger and more confident in this than in The Outcast. It added to the suspense. I also think that Sadie Jones is brilliant at writing from a man's point of view which is often unusual with female authors! For these two books I'm claiming the points for task 25.2

Deirdre Skaggs (deirdre04) | 101 comments 25.3 Read a book that somehow relates to a live event you attended.

I read Too Close to Home , which I bought while I was attending the annual STC Summit earlier last week. Over 750 technical communicators attended the Summit, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Dallas, and one of the attendees posted a message on the message board offering to take anyone interested to a large independent bookstore, called Legacy Books. I bought this book on that trip, which inspired me to arrange my own trip to the largest used books bookstore in the area, Half-Price Books. Through my arranged outing, I ended up becoming friends with people from Manchester (England), Toronto (Canada), New Jersey, North Dakota, and New York. Overall, the three-day Summit was a fantastic experience and a great networking opportunity. =)

Rach (rachlovestv) | 261 comments For 15.7, I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls by Steve Hockensmith. The word Pride doesn't actually have much relation to this book. The title is mostly there because it is a prequel to Pride and Prejudice, though they do stretch the relationship at one point and say one of the main characters' faults is his pride. Pride really is a deadly sin, however - it separates you from other people, and doesn't let you accept help, even when you need it.

For 30.5, I read How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell AND Whip It by Shauna Cross. In the movie adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, one of the characters was voiced by Kristin Wiig. Kristin Wiig also starred in the movie adaptation of Whip It.

For 50.1, I rolled a 1 and a 6. Added together, that makes 7, which meant I could toss out the genres and read whatever I wanted. Yay! :) I chose to read Fly on the Wall: How One Girl Saw Everything by E. Lockhart and Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen.

Petra I completed Task 50.1 tonight.
I rolled a 2 (Graphic Novel) and a 5 (Historical Fiction), which total 7, which is "toss out the genres; read anything you want". I decided to stick with these two genres for choosing books.

For the Graphic Novel, I read Blankets (Big Book ticket: 592 pgs) , which is the story of Craig Thompson's childhood, teenage years and early adulthood. Seems that the Graphic Novels I pick up are all memoirs.
I enjoyed this journey through Craig's early life. The graphics are expressive and to-the-point. One of the points I really enjoy about a graphic novel is how so much emotion and dilemma is shown in the graphics themselves. It's a wonderful media for emotional stories.
The guilt, belief and faith of his religious upbringing are poignant to this story and I like how Craig remained true to himself throughout.
The love story was sweet and very touching.

For the historical novel I read Beatrice and Virgil: A Novel.
I still have this listed as "currently reading" because I'll have to think about it for a day or so to come up with a rating for it.
It's superbly written with beautiful prose, enticing, slow (almost to the point of getting close to "boring" in places), subtle. No action actually occurs in this book and yet the story emerges and the tension & horror build. In the end, I enjoyed the journey, although parts of it were horrific.
Very different from Life of Pi, which has a positive spin to it. This one.....not so much.

Thank you, Ms Anderson, for the fun and creative task. I would have enjoyed it no matter what I rolled on the dice........even a romance (I think)...

Potjy | 50 comments 25.7 - Ashley FL's Task - The Gods Must Be Crazy
Read a book involving Greek and/or Roman gods. May be non-fiction or fiction. Half-blood Gods are fine.
Ex. Gods Behaving Badly: A Novel or Oh My Gods!: A Look-it-Up Guide to the Gods of Mythology

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Big thanks to Ashley! If not for this task, I might never think about picking up this wonderful book. It sounds totally banal in synopsis, but has totally superb narration.

Alice (aliceg) | 424 comments FOr the April Fool 20.1 task I have read The Audacity of Hype by Armando Iannucci. The title of this book is a satire of Obama's book The Audacity of Hope. The book was a satirical look at the state of the World today focussing on politics and popular culture. I enjoyed reading it and found it a very funny take on today's World. However I did find that some of the sections were a little long and I would have preferred it if he had kept each section in short sharp paragraphs. I have given this book 3 stars.

Juniper (jooniperd) Hello!

I have finished Task 50.1 - Luck Be a Lady. I rolled a total of seven so tossed out my rolls and read:

The Broken Teaglass: A Novel by Emily Arsenault and
Hurry Down Sunshine by Michael Greenberg.

The Broken Teaglass took a while to get going, for me, but the second half was very good. It would be of interest to anyone who likes words/dictionaries & mystery. Hurry Down Sunshine was excellent. Greenberg wrote about the summer his 15 year old (at the time) daughter suffered a manic psychosis. It was so well written and insightful.

20.3 Love Walked In I LOVED this book. The mother of an 11 year old is bi-polar, and starts changing her behavior and disappearing. The book is about the effects of the mother is the throws of untreated illness.
I failed to say what I learned about bipolar disorder which was this - I often confuse bipolar disorder with schizophrenia, which is apparently common as people can be misdiagnosed as schizophrenic; however, bipolar is more about manic swings of highs and lows, rather than differing personalities.

Sera Finished 20.3 Mental Health Task

I read Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

I really enjoyed this sad story about a teenage girl who committed suicide. What interested me the most was how little of an impact her parents had on the story, which truly showed how absent they were from her life. The most important thing I learned from this book is that one event doesn't lead a teen to commit suicide. It's each event that piles on top the other that causes the despair to have a snowball effect.

I gave it 4 stars.

Jay (jaydek) | 58 comments 15.10 "Face the facts of being what you are..."
A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories by Flannery O'Connor
A personal philosophy I hold in life is that no woman should ever settle -- not for anything -- but especially not just to get married! I loved dating when I was younger, but was always careful not to get serious unless it was a special guy. I always support my single girlfriends who complain about being unattached while entering their 30s, because I know that being with one guy just to be with someone is not worth it in the end! 3/14/10
Note: I feel I should say here that the subject of these short stories are not AT ALL related to my personal philosophy, I was just drawn to the title for the purpose of this task. The title is a little bit misleading, considering I originally thought it was going to be a bunch of short stories for women about relationships. If you've read this author, you know how hilariously wrong I was.

20.1 April Fool
Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher
While this book was so scattered it was at times hard to read, I overall liked Carrie's message....that you have to keep your sense of humor no matter what and you can get through anything--including a gay man dying in your bed, manic-depression and electric shock therapy! I feel that the one-woman show this book is based on might be more entertaining because you get a could get a better sense of her personality. Her life stories were engaging and curious, but I wanted her to go a little deeper in to some of the things that happened to her--she's only scratching the surface to kee the story light and humorous. 4/17/10

20.3 Mental Health
The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester
Though his exact mental illness is never addressed, the madman in this book is locked up for murder, but deemed criminally insane so he resides in the mental asylum. I learned that just because you are insane and incapable of being socialized, you can still be incredibly bright and make contributions to society. 4/23/10

20.6 Favorite Series
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
I can't say I have a favorite series other than the Harry Potter books, but I didn't want to reread those for this challenge. Instead, I chose to start another wildly popular series. The first book in the Millenium series is about Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who gets in trouble with the law and takes some time off from his day job only to be sought out by a wealthy magnate to solve a past family mystery. Over a series of events, he eventually teams up with a young and alternative private investigator named Lisbeth Salander and together they solve the crime. I have already bought the second book and look forward to Lisbeth and Mikael working together for more cases! 4/4/10

20.7 Time to Declutter
Roses by Leila Meacham
My boyfriend attended a private dinner and ended up bringing home all the table arrangements, which were small boxes of beautiful red roses. However, we didn't really do anything with the centerpieces except plop them on our living room coffee table and watch them die. I finally cleaned out the flowers after reading the book--which is based on and old tradition of giving roses to members of each family for forgiveness. 3/29/10
**This was 609 pages and I'd like to claim a Big Book ticket for it**

20.9 A Really Cheesy Task
American Wife by Curtis Sittenfield
Used "American" cheese for this task. 3/29/10

Also, I would like to retract my 10 points for Night in task 10.5. I'll be using that book for another task and replacing that task with a different book once I read it.

I think that brings me to a revised total of 130 points.

Asho | 181 comments 30.5 PJ Reads's Task Six Degrees of Separation:
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (off my TBR shelf)
and
The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt

I've been admiring all the tricky six degrees others have come up with, but I went really simple on this one. Mantel won the Man Booker Prize for 2009, and Byatt was nominated for the same award in the same category in the same year (which Tanja okayed).

*I would like to claim an I Like Big Books ticket for this task. Technically I could claim one for either book, as both are over 500 pages, but I suppose I'll claim it for Byatt, since at 675 pages it was the slightly longer of the two.*
