"20.3 Amy - Mental Health Disorder: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher 5*
Thirteen Reasons Why is a young adult book about the stages of depression for a high school student. I was very entranced by the book (especially since I was listening to it in audio form) and felt like I was living all the events that led to her eventual suicide. Highly recommend for anyone who has a middle school or high school child. You and he/she both need to read it. "
Depression in young adults or children is often a function of self-image issues often brought on by rumors or negative comments from other students. A depressed person wants others to see the real person not the false image being projected. Often the depressed person begins to lose their identity and they have difficulty seeing the real person within themselves - even to the point of accepting the negative image being purported. When this occurs, the person can (as in this story) lose the will to live - ergo, suicide.
The book was very good at showing that manifestation of depression is often subtle - with the person not appearing to have any problems. When the depression hits a critical state, major changes in behavior can occur - the person trying to develop another identity.
Key to helping a person in this state is observation and picking up on the subtleties and offering help at that point. As the depression deepens, it is difficult for the person to accept help.

Ah, Atlantic City. Known for its (surprisingly) clean public beaches, historic boardwalk, and, of course, the casinos. Because the tourists start arriving as soon as the weather warms up in the spring, it makes the perfect setting for the midway task!
For this, you either need a die or to go to ROLL THE DICE for your roll. The numbers you roll (first die, then second die) will let you know what genre of book you will read. You will read two books total for this task.
I rolled a 5 and a 2.
5 = Poetry (75pgs or more)
2 = Nonfiction
7 = Lucky Sevens! Toss out the genres and read whatever you'd like! (Woo! Although one of my books WAS nonfiction.)
Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster
Best Friends for Never by Lisi Harrison

My pen name would be Jane Winthrop. I chose this name by combining the names of the authors of two of the books I gave 5 stars to during this challenge.
They are Jane Austen and Elizabeth Winthrop.

At age 11, Harry Potter finds out he is a Wizard and started attending Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizadry. He also discovers that he is already famous, and has a deadly enemy - Lord Voldemort, a wizard gone bad. The series is a combination of boarding school coming of age, detailed fantasy, and the classic "chosen one" story.

The Twenty-One Balloons (179 pages) and
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler (162 pages)

20.8 Rachel Lee: 500 Pages of Magic: Total Pages Read = 730
A. Witch and Wizard by James Patterson, 4*, 314 pages
This is a new series in the YA genre by the famed mystery writer, James Patterson. Coming of age story, filled with bright kids learning about their magical capabilites, a dastardly villian trying to take over the world, and lots of kid-type situations and emotions. An excellent start to a series which will probably rival his "Maximum Ride" and "Daniel X" series.
B. The Summerhouse by Jude Deveraux 4* 416 pages
Wonderfully whimsical book about three ladies who have the same birthday and decide to spend their 40th together. They find a witch with a special "summerhouse" who helps them relive their lives and then chose which they like better. Lots of food for thought. Might be called a "coming of middle age" novel.
25.1 Micheleo - Future Aspirations:

True Believer by Nicholas Sparks 4*
My future aspiration is to spend more time at my condo on Lake Erie. The picture on the cover of this book is very similar to my location - on the water, near a lighthouse. The theme of the book is also about living near the water in a small town. Typical Sparks novel - warm, boy gets girl, a touch of mystery and an easy read.

OKAY. SO. I left some of the "bonus" information off my last post (#1958), so here it is:
Task 15.3. Books All Should Read pp.3/4/5: The Help by Kathryn Stockett (4/2/10)
I think The Help should DEFINITELY be on the Books-All-Should-Read list. It was awesome and inspiring and just GREAT, in a To Kill a Mockingbird way. As for which book I think should be at the top. The current top book IS To Kill a Mockingbird, which I think it a GREAT one. I'd have to put The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ above it though, for religious reasons... ;) TKaM can be #2, followed by The Help, which I'm really surprised is STILL on page 3.
Task 15.9. Pen Name: An Offer From a Gentleman by Julia Quinn (Julia Pottinger) (4/20/10)
If I write a book and decide not to publish under my real name (which would be a distinct possibility, as my first and last names NEARLY rhyme and do NOT roll off the tongue (What can I say? I fell in love!)), I would publish as Sara Nichols (my first and middle name being Sara Nicole). So CLOSE to my real name... but not.
Task 20.6. Bridget – Favorite Series: To Sir Phillip, With Love by Julia Quinn (4/17/10) (#5 in the Bridgerton series)
Ahhh... the Bridgerton series. My favorite romance novels... Okay, so it's a series of 8 historical (early 19th century England) romance novels about the 8 Bridgerton siblings who are notorious for all looking VERY similar (no worries about illegitimacy here!) and for being named alphabetically, from Anthony to Hyacinth. :) Their parents married for love, but their dad died when their mom was still pregnant with the youngest, which is really sad! But yeah, they're romance novels, so they're about each of the siblings falling in love and getting married and living happily ever after... though not before getting over some hurdles.
Julia Quinn is my favorite romance author—her writing is really witty and her... *cough* love scenes *cough* are tastefully done (if there is such a thing)... And you really find yourself caring about the characters and what happens to them. And then when you get to meet some of the characters again in later books, it's really exciting to see them all happy and having babies and STILL in love... :) My favorite in the series is #2 (about Anthony), The Viscount Who Loved Me. The banter between the hero and heroine... HILARIOUS. The mallet of death... heehee... Never has croquet been quite so exciting! :P
NOW I'm at 345 pts... although technically I've finished another one... but I'm waiting until I'm on my home computer for that... :)

I rolled a 5 and a 6 which is 11. So I read a book of poetry and a short story collection and one had to be written for children or young adults.
I read A Light in the Atticby Shel Silverstein which was written for kids and Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman.

The Secret Garden – Frances Hodgson Burnet
5.7 - March is Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time – Mark Haddon

Absalom, Absalom! – William Faulkner (b. 1897)
10.4 - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
C. Recylce: A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories – Flannery O’Connor
I passed this on to my friend (who then passed it on to another friend).
20.3 - Best Review Contest - Amy MO - Mental Health
A. The Sound and the Fury – William Faulkner
Quentin Compson is suffering from depression and neurosis stemming from the shattering of his worldview. His chapter in The Sound and the Fury is very difficult to read as his endless streams of thoughts are disjointed and often run into one another. I think it’s made me a bit more sympathetic to people suffering from neurosis because, provided Faulkner’s representation is correct, that has got to be an exhausting way to live.
30.5 - PJ Reads' Task - As Suggested By Tanja - Six Degrees of Separation
A. Collected Stories – Tennessee Williams
B. The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
1) Tennessee Williams also wrote “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” the movie version of which featured Paul Newman as Brick.
2) Paul Newman worked alongside Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
3) Robert Redford played Jay Gatsby in the 1974 movie of The Great Gatsby.

This book was incredibly disturbing and real. I had a roommate in college who had an eating disorder and looking back, I wish I had read this then - it could have possibly helped me to understand the way she was thinking. One of the most interesting things I learned was that a tendency for OCD goes along with eating disorders - the desire to follow your regimen of food/eating lends itself to that disorder as well.
