Amanda | 9 comments In April:

5.5 - The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (published in 2005)

5.9 - The Sister's Grimm: Fairy Tale Detectives by Michael Buckley

10.3 - Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff

10.10 - Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella

20.3 - Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulemia by Marya Hornbacher.
This book was incredibly disturbing and real. I had a roommate in college who had an eating disorder and looking back, I wish I had read this then - it could have possibly helped me to understand the way she was thinking. One of the most interesting things I learned was that a tendency for OCD goes along with eating disorders - the desire to follow your regimen of food/eating lends itself to that disorder as well.

20.5 - The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo (200 pages); Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder (224 pages); Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume (149 pages)

20.7 - Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde (By far my favorite book I've read for this challenge!)
I went through my closet this spring and gave away clothes, including a gray pair of pants :)

25.3 - The Cubs Fan's Guide to Happiness by George Ellis and a Cubs Game (we lost, but like the book says: there's always the next game!)

25.4 - Love Stories in This Town by Amanda Eyre Ward; Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins

Total for April: 140
Total in March: 95

Diane ~Firefly~ Wow, just found this group today and have been going over the books I've read the last two months that would fit. I'm loving doing challenges so happy to add another. Here we go.

10.1 Books really do grown on trees
Ghost Hunter (Harmony, #3) by Jayne Castle - 3/23/10

10.8 "I could have gone on flying through space forever."
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams - 4/30/10

10.9 A lovely horse is always an experience.... It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words."
Split Infinity by Piers Anthony - 4/17/10 (main character is a jockey)

20.1 The Most Improved Player - Cindy AL - April Fool
Finding Mr. Right by Emily Carmichael - 4/4/10

Lydia wasn't the best person in life and when she is killed while on a date with her best friend's (Amy) husband, she is then sent back to earth in the body of a Corgi to help Amy believe in love again and find the perfect man.

This is a fun read with a lot of the story being told by Miss Piggy (Lydia's dog name) as she tries to find the best possible man for Amy and come to terms with being a dog.

20.8 Happy Birthday To You Rachel Lee (March 24th)! - A Magical Birthday
Dance Upon the Air by Nora Roberts (373 pgs) - 5/1/10
The Mage in Black by Jaye Wells (326 pgs) - 4/16/10

25.5 Leora's Task - Spring Cleaning
Small Favor by Jim Butcher (541 pgs) - 4/10/10
Living with the Dead by Kelley Armstrong (540 pgs) - 3/8/10

25.7 Ashley FL's Task - The Gods Must Be Crazy
Summon the Keeper by Tanya Huff - 4/13/10
The retired greek gods visit the boarding house being run by the keeper.

50 POINT MIDWAY TASK - MS ANDERSON - LUCK BE A LADY
I rolled a 6 (mystery or thriller) and a 1 (pre-20th century) for a total of 7 (Lucky Sevens! Toss out the genres and read whatever you'd like!)

Murder by Impulse by D. R. Meredith - 4/6/10
Gift of Gold by Jayne Ann Krentz - 4/28/10

forgot to put my total. I believe that give me 170 points

message 1958: by Helen (new)

Helen Southall (hsouthall) | 356 comments Cynthia: Here is a repost of the original for this task and an additional paragraph on what I learned - sorry I thought I had included what was needed but I guess not detailed enough so here is another stab at it:

"20.3 Amy - Mental Health Disorder: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher 5*

Thirteen Reasons Why is a young adult book about the stages of depression for a high school student. I was very entranced by the book (especially since I was listening to it in audio form) and felt like I was living all the events that led to her eventual suicide. Highly recommend for anyone who has a middle school or high school child. You and he/she both need to read it. "

Depression in young adults or children is often a function of self-image issues often brought on by rumors or negative comments from other students. A depressed person wants others to see the real person not the false image being projected. Often the depressed person begins to lose their identity and they have difficulty seeing the real person within themselves - even to the point of accepting the negative image being purported. When this occurs, the person can (as in this story) lose the will to live - ergo, suicide.

The book was very good at showing that manifestation of depression is often subtle - with the person not appearing to have any problems. When the depression hits a critical state, major changes in behavior can occur - the person trying to develop another identity.

Key to helping a person in this state is observation and picking up on the subtleties and offering help at that point. As the depression deepens, it is difficult for the person to accept help.

Jessica | 38 comments 50 POINT MIDWAY TASK - MS ANDERSON - LUCK BE A LADY
Ah, Atlantic City. Known for its (surprisingly) clean public beaches, historic boardwalk, and, of course, the casinos. Because the tourists start arriving as soon as the weather warms up in the spring, it makes the perfect setting for the midway task!

For this, you either need a die or to go to ROLL THE DICE for your roll. The numbers you roll (first die, then second die) will let you know what genre of book you will read. You will read two books total for this task.

I rolled a 5 and a 2.
5 = Poetry (75pgs or more)
2 = Nonfiction

7 = Lucky Sevens! Toss out the genres and read whatever you'd like! (Woo! Although one of my books WAS nonfiction.)

Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster
Best Friends for Never by Lisi Harrison

George Orwell is the pen name for Eric Arthur Blair

My pen name would be Jane Winthrop. I chose this name by combining the names of the authors of two of the books I gave 5 stars to during this challenge.
They are Jane Austen and Elizabeth Winthrop.

message 1965: by Manday (new)

Manday | 307 comments I completed task 20.6 by reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, definitely my favorite series. I think everyone knows the plot - but to complete the task, my two line summary:

At age 11, Harry Potter finds out he is a Wizard and started attending Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizadry. He also discovers that he is already famous, and has a deadly enemy - Lord Voldemort, a wizard gone bad. The series is a combination of boarding school coming of age, detailed fantasy, and the classic "chosen one" story.

Alice (aliceg) | 424 comments I've not finished any more books yet but i've got in a bit of a mix up with the 50 point task. Forget that i've done that one because I actually haven't! I am going to use Between the Assassinations by Arivind Adiga for the 20.2 task as it has a character in it that cleans and sweeps a shop as his job. (I will probably use Brooklyn for either independently speaking as the author is irish or spring clean reading 850 pages but will let you know when i've read the other books for those tasks!) 10.4 - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

For this task I read Ghost of a Chance by Yasmine Galenorn which I passed on to my mother to read.

15.10 - Read a book whose title relates to your personal philosophy. When posting this task share your personal philosophy of life.
For this task I read Karma Girl by Jennifer Estep (Goodreads author). I'm a big believer in Karma. I believe that what you put out into the world will have a way of coming back around to you. I try to live as earth friendly as I can, as well as live honestly and positively.

20.4 - Always The Bridesmaid, Never The Bride - Heidi - Our Histories.
I selected options B & C for this task. The first book I read was the first book in the Angelini Family Saga,Very Valentine by Adriana Trigiani. For option B I read Shooting Gallery: An Art Lover's Mystery by Hailey Lind, which is set in San Francisco and Oakland. I live 3 hours north of the Bay Area.

20.7 - I Like Big Books And I Cannot Lie - Potjy - Time To Declutter
Find a thing in your house/room that should be thrown/given/swapped away, and read a book that related in any way to that object.
For this task I read Killer Hair by Ellen Byerrum. This book is about a fashion editor who tries to solve the murder of a hairdresser. I cleaned out my bathroom vanity and got rid of a bunch of old makeup, hair products, bath products, etc. It was much needed! Thanks Potjy!

25.3 - Coralie's Task - Coming Out Of Hibernation
Attend a live sporting event or musical or drama event and read a book that is somehow connected to the event.
For this task I read Dying in Style by Elaine Viets which was about a mystery shopper who tries to solve the murder of a clothing designer. I read this book because I went to a charity fashion show back in April.

Some of you speed readers are really putting me to shame, but I'm having fun and reading more than usual...so it's all been worth it! :)

I'm going to take a couple posts to get up to speed:

Nancy | 138 comments For Task 30.6 - Character References, I read Matched. In this YA book about a future society, there was so much information that 100 Committees were formed to select only 100 of things to be saved. So only 100 poems were officially saved, but a character secretly saved one of Dylan Thomas' poems with the famous line "do not go gentle into that good night." This becomes a major theme of the novel. I had never read any Dylan Thomas, so I chose to read Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog. I enjoyed both, but found Matched to be a much easier and more memorable read.

20.8 Rachel Lee: 500 Pages of Magic: Total Pages Read = 730
A. Witch and Wizard by James Patterson, 4*, 314 pages

This is a new series in the YA genre by the famed mystery writer, James Patterson. Coming of age story, filled with bright kids learning about their magical capabilites, a dastardly villian trying to take over the world, and lots of kid-type situations and emotions. An excellent start to a series which will probably rival his "Maximum Ride" and "Daniel X" series.

B. The Summerhouse by Jude Deveraux 4* 416 pages

Wonderfully whimsical book about three ladies who have the same birthday and decide to spend their 40th together. They find a witch with a special "summerhouse" who helps them relive their lives and then chose which they like better. Lots of food for thought. Might be called a "coming of middle age" novel.

25.1 Micheleo - Future Aspirations:
True Believer by Nicholas Sparks
True Believer by Nicholas Sparks 4*

My future aspiration is to spend more time at my condo on Lake Erie. The picture on the cover of this book is very similar to my location - on the water, near a lighthouse. The theme of the book is also about living near the water in a small town. Typical Sparks novel - warm, boy gets girl, a touch of mystery and an easy read.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! I HATE INTERNET EXPLORER!!! It ERASED my whole post just because I hit backspace! *pouts* Okay, here I go again... *grumbles about wishing she were on her OWN computer using Google Chrome*

OKAY. SO. I left some of the "bonus" information off my last post (#1958), so here it is:

Task 15.3. Books All Should Read pp.3/4/5: The Help by Kathryn Stockett (4/2/10)

I think The Help should DEFINITELY be on the Books-All-Should-Read list. It was awesome and inspiring and just GREAT, in a To Kill a Mockingbird way. As for which book I think should be at the top. The current top book IS To Kill a Mockingbird, which I think it a GREAT one. I'd have to put The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ above it though, for religious reasons... ;) TKaM can be #2, followed by The Help, which I'm really surprised is STILL on page 3.

Task 15.9. Pen Name: An Offer From a Gentleman by Julia Quinn (Julia Pottinger) (4/20/10)

If I write a book and decide not to publish under my real name (which would be a distinct possibility, as my first and last names NEARLY rhyme and do NOT roll off the tongue (What can I say? I fell in love!)), I would publish as Sara Nichols (my first and middle name being Sara Nicole). So CLOSE to my real name... but not.

Task 20.6. Bridget – Favorite Series: To Sir Phillip, With Love by Julia Quinn (4/17/10) (#5 in the Bridgerton series)

Ahhh... the Bridgerton series. My favorite romance novels... Okay, so it's a series of 8 historical (early 19th century England) romance novels about the 8 Bridgerton siblings who are notorious for all looking VERY similar (no worries about illegitimacy here!) and for being named alphabetically, from Anthony to Hyacinth. :) Their parents married for love, but their dad died when their mom was still pregnant with the youngest, which is really sad! But yeah, they're romance novels, so they're about each of the siblings falling in love and getting married and living happily ever after... though not before getting over some hurdles.

Julia Quinn is my favorite romance author—her writing is really witty and her... *cough* love scenes *cough* are tastefully done (if there is such a thing)... And you really find yourself caring about the characters and what happens to them. And then when you get to meet some of the characters again in later books, it's really exciting to see them all happy and having babies and STILL in love... :) My favorite in the series is #2 (about Anthony), The Viscount Who Loved Me. The banter between the hero and heroine... HILARIOUS. The mallet of death... heehee... Never has croquet been quite so exciting! :P

NOW I'm at 345 pts... although technically I've finished another one... but I'm waiting until I'm on my home computer for that... :)

Josalyn | 80 comments I just did 50.0
I rolled a 5 and a 6 which is 11. So I read a book of poetry and a short story collection and one had to be written for children or young adults.
I read A Light in the Atticby Shel Silverstein which was written for kids and Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman.

Kristie | 2 comments 5.2 - "A book is like a garden carried in the pocket."
The Secret Garden – Frances Hodgson Burnet

5.7 - March is Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time – Mark Haddon

5.10 - "The important thing is not what they think of me, but what I think of them."
Absalom, Absalom! – William Faulkner (b. 1897)

10.4 - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
C. Recylce: A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories – Flannery O’Connor
I passed this on to my friend (who then passed it on to another friend).

20.3 - Best Review Contest - Amy MO - Mental Health
A. The Sound and the Fury – William Faulkner

Quentin Compson is suffering from depression and neurosis stemming from the shattering of his worldview. His chapter in The Sound and the Fury is very difficult to read as his endless streams of thoughts are disjointed and often run into one another. I think it’s made me a bit more sympathetic to people suffering from neurosis because, provided Faulkner’s representation is correct, that has got to be an exhausting way to live.

30.5 - PJ Reads' Task - As Suggested By Tanja - Six Degrees of Separation
A. Collected Stories – Tennessee Williams
B. The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald

1) Tennessee Williams also wrote “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” the movie version of which featured Paul Newman as Brick.
2) Paul Newman worked alongside Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
3) Robert Redford played Jay Gatsby in the 1974 movie of The Great Gatsby.

Heather | 384 comments Finished task 20.6... Book from a series. I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I really enjoyed this book. I'm not a big fan of series books, but knowing that there are 3 books and they are already available makes this a good series for me. It's also kind of out of my genre, but it was a really interesting story and I'm looking forward to the next 2 books!

Rach (rachlovestv) | 261 comments Thanks, Cynthia, for letting me know I forgot to post my pseudonym for 15.9: The Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain (real name: Samuel Clemens). I would probably use Marie Norman was a pseudonym, which is a combination of my middle name and my mom's maiden name.

I also finished:

25.9: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown, who was popular when I was in HS/College (1995-2003)

Nicole | 1295 comments I just completed 20.8 by reading

1. The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen- found this utterly charming and can't wait to read her other books! Looking to fit them into the Summer Challenge!
2. The Magician's Assistant by Ann Patchett. I love her and Truth and Beauty will always be my favorite work of hers, followed closely by Bel Canto. I did like this story all the way through and then the ending left me a little cold. But I still gave it 4 stars.

These brought me to a total of 662 pages (the minimum for the task was 500)

Tasks Completed: 37/57
Books Read: 53
Pages Read: 15,894
