5.10Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (who lived from 1828-1910).
837 pages, plus 17 pages of introduction.
Poor Anna, doomed to inhabit the pages of a LOOOONG Russian novel forever. Actually, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. And the footnotes were very helpful. But I'm glad I'm done with it.

Jackie | 125 comments Here's what I have so far:

10.4 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle- The Host
5.5 Whatever is popular- The Shack
and
20.6 Favorite series- (They don't have a link yet...too new maybe)Fantasy in Death J.D. Robb

The Host was not what I was expecting from Stephanie. Completely different but a great plot line.

The Shack was one of the best books I've read in a really long time. Well written book with a different take on Christianity. I've been dying to read it and I finally got it in.

Fantasy in Death is part of the In Death Series by J.D. Robb. I don't know if any of you have read them but they're kind of like futuristic homicide detective books. Her character development is amazing with the same relationships through out all of the books. If you haven't tried them pick one up!

Susan | 682 comments 5.9 I read "Beat the Reaper" by Josh Bazell. It was honestly one of the best books I have read this year. Not an "Oprah" book, just a good fast moving story told in a sarcastic/funny way (although somewhat gory). I highly recommend!

Yes sorry I realised this morning that I read the wrong number! I have found connection between the books which is as follows:

Both Brooklyn and Between the Assassinations were published in the UK and the USA during 2009 and the author's of each book is a journalist also!

Thanks,

Bluemoon (bluemoon286) | 1797 comments Finished the 50 point task. My first roll was a 6 so Mystery/Thriller. My second roll was another 6 (Boxcars) so I rolled again and got a 4 which is 20th or 21st century literature. I read The Paris Vendetta: A Novel (3*) for my mystery/thriller and read The Goose Girl (5*). The Paris Vendetta did not grab me as much as some of the other books have. It was still a good read. I really enjoyed The Goose Girl. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.
I really had fun with this task thanks Ms. Anderson.

This will bring my total to 265 points.

message 1914: by [deleted user] (new)

15.1 - For the first book, set in one of the countries, I read The Brightest Star in the Sky by Marian Keyes which is set in Ireland. It was meh. Too twee and sentimental for me.

For the second part, author from one of these countries, I read The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, who is from Zimbabwe (Yes, I know he is 'Scottish' by parentage, but he was born in Zimbabwe and also lived in Africa for many years. Plus he's in Wikipedia under Zimbabwean novelists) I liked it and will probably pick up some of the other books in the series.

20.8 - I finally finished this task the right way. And can I just say that I hate these read however many pages tasks. Just say read two books or three books or whatever. There just seems to be too many of these tasks. And they become really joyless for me. I like to pick books that are interesting to me for each of these tasks, but when I start thinking about numbers, ugh.

Okay, rant over, so I read The Magicians by Lev Grossman, a sort of Harry Potter-esque/Narnia world where coeds go to a Magical College to learn Magic except it is dark and real, and I loved this book. Go read it now! 416 pages.

I also read The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis. I chose this book because in The Magicians, there is frequent mentioning of children's novels set in the world of Fillory, which is definitely based on Narnia. I also remember reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as a child and loving it, so I decided to pick this book up since I never read it. I enjoyed it, and will probably be re-reading the other books at some point. 221 pages.

50 point challenge - I rolled 6/6/3, and I decided to read a collection of short stories and an autobiography.

For the short story collection, I read Drown by Junot Diaz. I really enjoyed it a lot. As a Latina, it is hard to find literature that speaks to me, and this group of stories definitely did. I look forward to reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which has been sitting on my TBR shelf for a while.

For the Autobiography, I read Melissa Febos's memoir Whip Smart: A Memoir, about her time working as a dominatrix in NYC while attending college. This book is not for the faint of heart. It goes into every gory detail of what this sort of job entails, and it is not pretty. Febos's own experience is also the more harrowing because of her own drug addiction (heroin) and in the end, she does become clean and leave the job. Her view on the profession is not totally one-sided, however, and she does mention that there are some people who are really into the job and do it because they get something out of it besides all of the money. (Imagine making 75 an hour! Plus tips!) I could never do this though, it just grosses me out way too much. Not the best read ever, but pretty interesting.

Previous score: 380
Current Score: 465

Rachel Lee (rlcwt9) | 261 comments Ok so I haven't posted in a very long time but I have been reading so this will be a long post.

5.1 The Last Hawk

5.5 City of Bones Goodreads Author

5.8 Talk of the Town Goodreads Author

10.6 The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game-also watched the movie and loved it

15.3 Left Behind

15.5 Exploding Gravy: Poems to Make You Laugh Thunderstorms today, At Least No Hail Is Coming, House can take no more

15.6 FallenGoodreads Author AND Hush, Hush

20.1 Miss Match: A Lauren Holbrook Novel While this book may not be classified as humor, I found myself laughing out loud throughout the entire book. This is a book where the main characters reminded me so much of my own group of friends that I couldn't help but laugh at the conversations between Lauren and her best friend. I enjoyed this book so much, that I ended up purchasing the other two in the series and read them right away.

20.3 Dark Pursuit One of the main characters in this book suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from a car accident. This character is a writer who can no longer hold his plots in his head and struggles with writing and keeping any concentration following this injury. It also caused memeroy loss and confusion in addition to mood swings. This is a newer diagnosis that is just now gaining recognition. This is an injucy that occurs during combat and is becoming increasingly common in troops returning from Iraq and/or Afghanistan due to roadside bombs and IEDS. This is a major concern for VA hospitals as the symptoms can vary greatly in severity and cause lifelong issues for those suffering from a TBI.

20.6 Spherical Harmonic This is a series I discovered secondary to another task for this challenge. I enjoyed that book so much that I found ways to fit all 14 books into this challenge. This series is a science fiction romance/family saga or could be considerd a space opera. However, the author is also a theoretical physicist so her background adds a lot of interest to the scientific aspects of the story. Being the science nerd that I am, I really enjoy this added complexity to the story.

20.8 James Potter and the Vault of Destinies

25.1 Spinning Forward I would love to learn to knit

25.4 Full Moon AND Daring Chloe

25.9 Twilight-I was in high school and college from 1999-2008.

30.3 Rooms: A Novel2010 AND The Renovation: Carter Mansion

30.4 Over Sea, Under Stone AND The Radiant Seas

30.5 Skyfall AND City of Ashes Catherine Asaro and Harry Turtledove both contributed to Flights: Extreme Visions of Fantasy AND Harry Turtledove and Cassandra Clare both contributed to Turn the Other Chick

50.1 I rolled a 3 and a 5 so I read an award winning romance New Moon and a historical fiction A Passion Most Pure

Deedee | 2344 comments Waiting for Gertrude A Graveyard Gothic by Bill Richardson The Elephant Keeper by Christopher Nicholson
I’m ready to claim another task!
25.8 - Helen's Task - Talk to the Animals
In honor of our animal friends, read two books (fiction or non-fiction):
A. A book narrated by or written in the voice of an animal
I read: Waiting for Gertrude: A Graveyard Gothic by Bill Richardson (Hardcover, 192 pages) : a quirky novel : in goodreads words: < In Paris's Pere-Lachaise cemetery lie the bones of many renowned departed. It is also home to a large number of stray cats. Now, what if by some strange twist of fate, the souls of the famous were reborn in the cats with their personalities intact?> Didn’t work for me …. Except for the scenes with Oscar Wilde, who stole the show whenever he was around :0)
AND
B. A book demonstrating the relationship between owners and pets
I read: The Elephant Keeper by Christopher Nicholson (Hardcover, 352 pages) [A Costa Book Award Nominee for Novel in 2009:]. This novel is about a young man who takes care of a pair of elephants imported from India to England in the 1770s. He values his elephants over human relationships; and he grows to believe that he is in psychic communication with the female elephant. It’s told in easy prose and reads quickly. I can see why it was nominated for the Costa Award; I can also see why it didn’t win. 3 stars.

Nicole | 1295 comments I just completed task 25.2 by reading Jodi Picoult's first two novels, Songs of the Humpback Whale and Harvesting the Heart. This is definitely a case of fabulous firsts. In fact Harvesting the Heart was one of my least favorite Picoult books ever. I loved the structure of the first book. It was very much in her signature style, but even better because one of the narratives went backwards while the rest of them went forward. This technique added a lot to the impact of the storyline. I also really liked how her style was so much more literary than usual.

A) The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe
B) Would Be Witch by Kimberly Frost
1647 The first woman known to be executed as a witch, Achsah Young in Massachusetts. The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane is about a woman who was executed as a witch in the 1600s, and she was actually a witch. Would be witch is about a modern woman with witch powers.

25.2
The Forest of Hands and Teeth and The Dead Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan
I liked the first book better because that is where the concept of the story was introduced; much of the second book was repeating that concept. I would still read another book by this author.

Sera Finished 30.3

Book first published in 2010 - Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime by Mark Halperin, et al. I really enjoyed this behind the scenes book.

Book with "re-" in the title - Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. I enjoyed this book but not as much as most other readers based upon the rating.

Total Points: 145
