Actual Rating 3.5 stars.

Much better than the first book.

It is a relief really after the previous let down. Now we can see for sure that this series have potential.

However, I must confess that I am honestly not sure if my rating is more due to the actual book, or that I just tend to be predisposed to like Gena Shouter’s work. I admit I might not be completely objective.

Atlantis #1: Heart of the Dragon - 2.5 stars.
Atlantis #4: The Vampire’s Bride - 4 stars.

SPOILERS NOT HIDDEN IN THIS REVIEW

WHY VAMPIRES SUCK AS ROMANTIC LEADS BY CARMEN
1.) They're cold. And dead. This is not sexy.
2.) I don't want to hurt my lover, and I don't want to be hurt by my lover. Pain during sex is not appealing (to me).
3.) Someone kissing your neck = yum.
Someone nibbling/biting your neck = yum.
Getting hickeys = yum.
Someone taking their razor-sharp teeth and plunging them into your carotid artery = yuck.
Your blood gushing out into someone's mouth = yuck.
The taste of blood = yuck.
The temperature of blood = yuck.
How blood feels in your stomach = nauseating. Even people who enjoy the taste of blood can only handle a lick or two. It's not ingested easily or well.
4.) Also, opening your veins to someone's wet, filthy, bacteria-infested mouth is a great way to spread disease. Both the "donor" and the "recipient" are just asking for sickness. Bloodborne pathogens, people. BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS!!!

I understand the concept. Scrunching = arousal. Or, if you're not a Buffy fan, it goes: unsheathing your fangs = getting an erection. Just listen to this:

She felt his teeth elongating, readying for insertion.

Uh-huh. I'm sure. *rolls eyes.

Then, Showalter tries to tell us that Jewel isn't afraid or disgusted by Gray wanting to drink her blood. Instead, it makes her feel special and cherished.

She'd never been bitten before, but she wanted to share a deeper part of herself with Gray, wanted to be the first and only woman he drank from. Perhaps it would link them, far stronger than they were already linked.

See? Vampire feeding = sex. Also, this is a way of Showalter giving her womanizing hero a form of virginity that only the heroine is allowed to "deflower." In the last book, she made the hero into someone who'd never "allowed" a lover to give him a blowjob, so that he could get his first one from the heroine - and here she's doing the same with blood-drinking.

Except not really, because Gray feeds on a demon, attacking him, draining him dry, and killing him. Are we supposed to believe he's now had "sex" or "blood-sex" or "feeding-sex" or whatever with the demon he killed? Or somehow blood-feeding is only sexual if he does it with a woman? Or only a human woman? Or only if it's a woman he's interested or what? I'm really confused here.

Why on earth am I talking about a vampire 'hero' if this is allegedly about a human government agent falling in love with the magical Jewel of Atlantis? Well. Remember in my previous review when I said that Showalter's Atlantis is populated by nymphs, vampires, weredragons, and Formorians? How do you think you can write a romantic hero who is supposed to be tough and able to protect the heroine if he's a wimpy human? That's right. Have him fight off some vampires, demons and Formorians, but make sure he's wounded and bitten by them. Then, voila - a human/vampire/demon/Formorian mix that allows the hero to stay "hot" but instantly become a badass who flies, drinks blood, can see in the dark, and whose eyes glow red when angry. I thought this was a cop-out and too easy.

Also, this book is ridiculous. Now, I understand that this is a romance novel, and I've said it before: I expect romance novels to be silly and sexist. I grade them on an extreme curve (and as a consequence they never get more than 3 stars from me). But even on my lenient scale this book was ridiculous.

Jewel (Gray, the hero, names her) is a slave. She can predict the future and she's unable to lie - which makes her priceless. Anyone who owns her has an amazing advantage over their enemies. She's gorgeous. Gorgeous.

She's a virgin. WTF? I can't believe this. As a slave, and a really really good-looking one at that, even if I believed she'd never been in love or had consensual sex, it's impossible to believe none of her former owners (and she's had a lot) took a sexual interest in her. Showalter doesn't even TRY to explain this. She mentions that people only see her as an object, a slave, an "it" and not as a person - but she's a gorgeous 20-something woman with no rights and no means of self-defense. Showalter could have at least put in the my-powers-will-disappear-if-I-have-sex trope (and I HATE this trope, but at least it's an excuse), but there's nothing.

THEN, if that wasn't hard enough to believe, we're also supposed to believe that she's not only a virgin, but a virgin whose never masturbated in her life. Again, no explanation is given, but it practically made me scream in anger when I had to read the "she discovers her clitoris for the first time" scene. Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. I'm willing to believe in a hidden alternate dimension of Atlantis populated with the bastard offspring of a dead god, but I'm not willing to believe that Jewel is a 20-something virgin who doesn't even realize that touching herself "down there" feels good. ESPECIALLY since she's spied on Gray and his mind since she was a child up to the present, which included watching him have sex with A LOT of women, women who she specifically told Gray that she'd "imagined herself in the place of," but yet never touched herself? Yeah, right.

Another completely ridiculous part of the plot is all the mind-reading. I don't like mind-reading in stories, but this is even worse because it's all over the place. When Gray goes into Atlantis, Jewel can easily read his mind. Later, she can only read it some of the time. Then, she can travel INTO his mind and they can interact there, as if it's a room or something. THEN, he develops mind-reading powers for a while. It's a huge merry-go-round of who-can-read-whose-mind that was dizzying, made absolutely no sense, followed no logic, and appeared and disappeared at the whim of the author.

Then there's some kind of weird "Jewel is insecure" subplot where she gets really worried because every time that Gray has sex with her he fucks her hard and fast, and when she watched him have sex with all those women in the past (this still creeps me out, ugh, so creeped out) he really took his time and savored them and "made love" to them. This makes her doubt that she's really in love with him, but when she finally asks him about it, he's just like "Oh, you silly innocent woman! Don't you know that this means I want you more than anyone I've ever wanted. You just drive me so insane it's impossible to take my time with you!" And she's like: "Oh, that's a relief. Carry on, then." o.O So weird.

Lastly, and this is a major spoiler so if you care, skip this paragraph: At the end, Jewel turns out to be a direct descendent of the gods and a mixture of every single type of blood (human/weredragon/vampire/centaur/minotaur/etc. etc. etc.). Major cop-out. Super-special snowflake to the max!!!!

SO. Now that I've thoroughly eviscerated this book, why is it getting 2 stars and not one? Because Gena Showalter is a good author. Her writing is not bad or hard to read, she makes likeable characters, she always makes me laugh a bit (nothing as funny as her first two novels, though), she presents a creative creature-filled world, and the sex is both good and consensual. Trust me, there are a LOT of worse romance novels than this one.

Tl;dr: Fluffy, beyond ridiculous, good consensual sex, nonsensical plot even for a romance novel. Very Mary-Sue and Gary-Stu, even beyond usual romance parameters. Not recommended. 2 real stars, 3 romance stars.

I own this in Spanish.

P.S. Also, Jewel fights and kills four demons after a 1-hour session of self-defense lessons with Gray. o.O And basically the self-defense lesson was an excuse for him to grope her.

P.P.S. Gray is one of the most stubborn, egotistical, irrational male leads I've ever read in my entire life. He often purposefully ignores Jewel and her advice even though he KNOWS she's psychic because he has to be the "big man." It's beyond stupid.

P.P.P.S. There's a whole scene in which Gray takes Jewel to a bar and teaches her to dirty dance. I KNOW THAT MOVIE IS POPULAR, BUT COME ON. It was strange.

I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. Although it took me a while to finish this book because of outside factors, I thought it was pretty awesome. My one complaint is I think the ending was a bit rushed. This might be the hottest book that I have read by GS so far. The love scenes were pretty steamy. One thing I liked is that Gray has a very large POV in this story. It's really cool to see a romance from the guy's perspective. And I feel that his viewpoint read pretty authentic for a guy. He did and said, and thought exactly the way I would imagine a man would think. Now I have never walked in a man's shoes, so I might be disputed on this. Nevetheless it felt real to me.

As typical for GS, there was an aura of sweetness and good-naturedness to this story. It is difficult to describe, but in the books I've read by Ms. Showalter with the exception of Awaken Me Darkly there seems to be this upbeat tone. Now that doesn't mean that bad things don't happen and people don't die in this book or her others. But you get the impression that in the end, everything will work out and good will prevail. I must say I like that about her books. Life can seem pretty dark and hopeless. It's nice to read a book with an overall tone of optimism. I love my angsty, dark romances, but it's also nice to read some that are on the upbeat side as well.

The mythology in this story is pretty interesting. It borrows from Greek myths, but there are some extra things added. I have never thought of vampires as being a large aspect of the Greek mythology, and I believe the Formorians are from ancient Celtic mythology. Thus I feel that there is a potpourri of folklore used to develop Showalter's Atlantis universe. As always, I am a folklore/mythology geek, so I enjoyed seeing the mythological creatures that populated this story.

It was also nice to revisit Darius and his bride Grace, and see the intriguing Layel (can't wait to read his story). Those demons are just gross and don't sound the least bit attractive to me.

I really did like Jewel. She was a sweet person but also formidable in her own way. She had been in love with Gray from afar for many years, seeing him in visions in her mind. I thought it was sad that she had seen the profusion of women he'd been with in her mind in excruciating detail, but she didn't let that bother her, but took her opportunity to be with him the capacity available to her. I appreciated her love for others, and how she often tried to sacrifice her well-being to help others. She had a rough existence, but in a way that is rather different from other romance heroines.

I must say that this is a great book to read if you are a fan of the paranormal genre. It's not dark and intense in the way that a lot of the popular series right now are. But it's very good and fun, but has depth that will fill your hours until the last word has been read.

4.5 stars

I can't believe I haven't read this book before now. It's old news now but Gena Showalter is one of my favorite author of all time, I've said it a thousand times before but I'll say it again, I will read anything she writes and probably love it. I don't know if it's the way she writes, her vivid and endless imagination or her awesome characters but I'm always stunned by her work.

Jewel of Atlantis was so damn good. I read the first book in the Atlantis series a few months ago and wasn't completely taken by the story but this one felt more like Showalter's current style. These books were before her Lords of the Underworld series, some of her first work and you can tell her writing style has changed and grown since then but I genuinely loved Jewel of Atlantis and read it in one go.

I love the universe she created in this series, it's intriguing and it has so much potential, in Heart of the Dragon, Showalter wrote about a shapeshifting dragon hero and a human heroine, in Jewel of Atlantis she went with a human hero and an exceptional heroine, extremely powerful and definitely not human.

Gray is a human working for the OBI, the FBI of all things supernaturals. He is sent to Atlantis through a secret portal to retrieve the Jewel of Dunamis, a powerful object able to predict the future, detect lies from truths and conquer anything and anyone. What he doesn't know is that this Jewel is actually a woman, a woman being used for her powers, unable to lie and always under guard, she longs for freedom. When Gray steps foot in Atlantis, he's immediately thrown into danger, creatures can smell his human blood and give chase. While trapped by a demon, he hears a voice in his head guiding and helping him, turns out that voice is Jewel. In exchange for her help, she asks him to free her from her captors.

Both main characters were amazing, Gray is a cocky, smart and strong male lead while his counterpart, Jewel, is sweet, shy but definitely powerful and far from stupid. From the start I loved their connection, it felt natural and didn't feel forced by the writer to make the story work like she wanted.

The story has no real big twists or surprises since, from the beginning, we know that Jewel is what Gray is actually looking for but I liked it, I think Gena made it work and I loved the fact that she didn't create any unnecessary drama. However, there's plenty of action in this book. A lot of fighting, vampires, demons, mermen and other terrible creatures. I liked Gray's quick mind, it was very obvious since the beginning that she was the Jewel of Dunamis and while she didn't tell him outright, throughout the story he started having suspicions and wasn't really surprised when he discovered the real truth and I loved that.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing their relationship develop, no slow burn here but it's understandable when you read the story, things quickly fall into place and while not always my favorite way to go with a romance, I can honestly say I liked it in this case. It worked, I fell in love with both of them and could have greedily read more.

However, the ending was a little rushed for my taste. It all ended so abruptly and easily, I would've liked more closure, but it was such a small part, I can't really say it ruined anything other than the fact that it was a tad frustrating.

We also get to revisit Darius and Grace from the first book and we also meet Valerian and Layel, the heroes of the third and fourth book. I am looking forward to reading their respective stories and learning more about this magical world Showalter created.

While I enjoyed this book I didn't find it as interesting as the first one. It had some amazing parts where I found myself sighing like a 15-year old and then some others where I thought: ARE YOU SERIOUS?

IMHO the problem with this installment was that it lacked everything I loved about book one. I adored the Dragon warriors, for me they are the most interesting species because I have never read about them before, while I got a bit bored of gods, vampires and demons. I was exhilarated about reading something new, which I found in the first one but totally lost in this 2nd book. While I was completely lost into the plot of the first book I just couldn't believe this one. We see a heroine which is not sure what she really is but she understands she is very powerful and needed by other species so she runs from them or tries to escape once she gets captivated. Then the hero comes and rescue her. So far so good, I was enjoying it big time, but then everything just got too surreal.
the heroine even is able to kill 4 demons by herself only using a stick and her fighting skills which were thought by the hero in a single day. I don't know, many things just didn't make sense at all.

Still it was a sweet romance and I really liked the hero and the heroine's personalities. Moreover we get to learn a lot about all the other species and spend some time with the Dragons. While I wanna read about the king of each species I didn't care at all about Jewel (the heroine). And I didn't like the ending at all, it was just lame, one of those that feel the author had no idea what to do and solves everything magically in a paragraph.

I still like this series and wanna read more. I just hope next book is more like the first one.

Well this is when the author was on her A game. Classic Paranormal Romance (PNR) full of gods and demons and mythical creatures... with a dash of military romance because of the hero. :)

Grayson James is part of the Otherworld Bureau of Investigation (OBI)- a black ops group so secret, few know about it… because few know about the creatures the OBI investigates. Sent to Atlantis, (a world hidden in the depth of the oceans), to recover a Jewel rumored to be so powerful, armies fall before it, he instead finds himself mired in its world of ugly evil. Well mostly evil. The creature that contacted him and is communicating with him through mind reading is anything but evil and ugly by the sound of her sexy voice. But she seems to be the one to lead him the Jewel so his mission has changed a bit to include rescuing her.

And he does. But not before she rescues him- in more ways than one.

Ah yes, I miss the old Gena Showalter.

Jewel of Atlantis begins with Grayson James, a agent, a human who is looking for the Jewel of Dunamis, which legend has claimed is more powerful than anything and can provide the means to destroy any enemy, however there is one catch. Grayson must find the Jewel which is in Atlantis but what Grayson assumed is the the Jewel is a stone. When he is close to finding the Jewel, he starts to hear a voice in his head, a woman's voice that stirs up desire within him, even though he is suspicious and doubts that she is real, until he saves her from the Queen of Demons who has held her captive. But Grayson doesn't realize until later, that the Jewel of Dunamis is the same woman whom he has saved, and whom has assisted him in navigating his way through the dangers ridden throughout Atlantis. But throughout their journey, they start to find a passion in one another, and a willingness to fight for a future together, no matter the cost or the dangers that could destroy all that they have built in one another.

I read this book a couple of weeks ago, but I finally remembered that I forgotten to write the review for this book. From what I recall, Jewel of Atlantis is the second in the Atlantis series. Even though I haven't read this series in order, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it so far. Jewel of Atlantis is unique, and we get to see appearances of The Dragon King Darius and his bride Grace who is also human. However throughout most of the book, we see a intense plot, where Grayson and Jewel are on the run from a variety of dangers throughout Atlantis. I also loved these two main characters as well. Jewel has been imprisoned because of her certain gifts, but knows that Grayson can save her, but as she helps guide him throughout the maze of Atlantis with all of its murky dangers, and find a love they never expected to find. This was a magical and satisfying adventure and passion, that takes you beneath the sea and into the mysteries of Atlantis.

Once again, I would recommend this book if you enjoy paranormal romance; particularly a bit of sultry, soppy romance. I really love the world of Atlantis and would rate the world a 4/5 but ultimately the romance was the focus, and I a bit mediocre(?) for me. Mind you, I don't usually read romance and really have to be in the mood - soooo it makes me a little sad that this is more a romance book than a fantasy because it would be sickkkkk. Overall, a nice and easy read though. I'm gonna leave the rest of the Atlantis books for a while, but keen to get back to them when I'm in the right mood!

Firstly, Gray is a pale blonde, what in the hell is Johnny Knoxville doing on the front of the book? Gray is there to steal a jewel that can figure out if people are lying and tell the future. It ends up the jewel is Jewel, who has had a psychic link to him all of his life. Now he has to try to save her from the demons that have kidnapped her and figure out what he is going to do with her once she's safe. Cute book, stale jokes. I think this is only the second book I've read by the author. I bought about 5 more so I'm going to work my way through them, but they're not high on my To Be Read shelf. 3 stars

I liked this book better than Heart of the Dragon (book 1). I think this is because book 1 of a series always has to set the stage (so to speak) and gets bogged down in extraneous details.

The mystery of Atlantis has always fascinated me and even though this series puts a different spin on the legend, I still loved it and read it in only 3 hours.

I liked this book :D
But, what I didnt like is the fact that I knew that Jewel is the jewel of Dunamis from the blurb..
Like it would have been better as a surprise :( ..
This is the first GS book I dont give a rating above 4 :( ..
And I surely hope its the last..
But I will always love Gena Showalter, no matter what xD❤

it was really a beautiful book, funny, creative... while ı was reading it, i really enjoyed.it wasnt a waste of time. nymphs vamps demon etc. it has really colorful characters.

A major improvement on the first book in the series. One of my favourite things about this book was that there was no imaginary hurdle created by the author that could have been solved by communication. The couple actually talked about their issues! Practically revolutionary!
Action-packed with some seriously sexy scenes.

Believability of character is a bit weak in this one. There's just not enough character development of the hero. He tries to teach Jewel self defense that he has learned over many years of training, and somehow succeeds in doing so in one afternoon. Pacing of the story is just off and the ending is wrapped up quite suddenly. Not my favorite of Gena Showalter's books.

This book was definitely better than book #1, but it was still a very average read for me.

This book came out nearly 20 years ago and I think the romantasy genre has evolved so much since then that this book and its characters and the plot and the dialogue just feels really dated.

I have bought this entire series as a package deal so I may at some stage pick up book #3 as I like that each book is about a different being (dragons, vampires, demons etc) and therefore maybe one of the later books will suit me better. However, my gut feel is that this series is not going to improve much for my reading interests and I like to go into every book expecting gold so it might be best to call it here as done.

I found Gray to be a very ick inducing mmc. He constantly made me cringe and made things pervy and weird. I could not stand the fmc accent, and every time I heard it, it made me clench my teeth. If every chapter hadn't been so heavily covered with sexual flirting and awkwardness, the idea and plot would have been good.

Jewel's backstory was interesting, and I wanted to know more. I also wanted to know more about her family and her weird, strange mental connection to Gray. it never explained why they were connected and saw visions on each other for years. I felt like the author was so stuck on this being a sexual romance fantasy that she missed her main goal.

The ending was unsatisfying for me. yay, she's part of every race species so they can stay together on the surface, but why is she made of everything!? so many unanswered questions, which sucks because the potential is under all that cringy badness.

Gray James is sent to Atlantis through a portal to find the Jewel of Dunamis. His employer, the Otherworld Bureau of Investigations, discovered a book detailing the many dangers native to Atlantis. Unfortunately for Gray none of them took the book too seriously. After being hunted by vampires and demons, Gray knows that all the information was correct. When he's in a tight situation someone suddenly speaks to him in his mind and helps him make it out alive. Gray isn't sure whether he can trust the woman who speaks to him, but he makes a bargain to save her anyway.

I read this book quickly and found it very readable, but I can't really say that I'll ever want to reread it. I found both of the characters very shallow. Right from the start Gray comes off as a bit of an old fashioned control freak. He always has to be the one to save the day and if it becomes necessary to accept help from someone he beats himself up over it to an irritating degree. Jewel comes off a bit like a fourteen year old. She is insanely naive (even through her experiences seeing the surface) and throws herself at Gray again and again even when he is hot and cold with her.

It was frustrating watching Gray come up with excuse after excuse of why he couldn't be with Jewel. I personally thought the whole living in two different worlds excuse was good enough, but obviously not. For a while there every couple pages he would come up with something new and be totally serious about it. It really added melodrama to the story. I was also really frustrated that Jewel losing an ability with Gray was brought up but it was never really explained why that happened.

Even though I didn't enjoy the characters that much I did enjoy the world. I liked the take on Atlantis and all the explanations of the beings that lived there. There was a lot of action in this book and it was very fast paced.

The second book in the Atlantis series. Atlantis is a world hidden below the ocean by the gods to contain all of their creations before the humans. The only way in is to discover one of two secret portals...guarded by men that can change into dragons and are ordered to kill all who try to come in.

Grayson James has managed to sneak through these fearsome guardians (not sure how) in search of the mythical Jewel of Dunamis. A jewel that has the power to tell the future, read minds, and separate lies from truth. His company wants to get the jewel before some government can get ahold of it and use it to their advantage during a war. Now, this reason seemed a little far fetched, because if no one can get to Atlantis to retrieve the jewel, then how can they use it? But, OK, I went with it.

Grayson soon realizes that the Jewel of Dunamis is not a gem, but a beautiful woman that is being held against her will by the demoms (one of the many creatures living in Atlantis), to take advantage of her gifts. This being a romance, sparks fly when they meet and Grayson must find a way to rescue her and keep her with him always.

I really enjoyed a lot of the tensions between Atlantean races the author allowed to spring up throughout the story. From dragon men, mermaids, gorgons, minotaurs, demons and vampires, they all had reasons for wanting the jewel in their hand and their reactions to her were unique and real. I enjoyed her character very much, while I found Grayson a little dull. It was a great read to follow up the first book, Heart of the Dragon, and parts of the storyline stem directly from the events that ended the first in the series (which I have found is unusual in romance series).

This is a hard book to rate. I thought the first 100 pages and the last 30 pages were awesome! Other than that, I felt that the middle of the book was slow and that the h/h didn’t have much chemistry. The only other problem I had with this book was the swearing. Now, I’m not a prude, and I don’t mind swearing. However, this felt like it was swearing for no reason, that Ms. Showalter had some type of quota and put them in whenever she felt like it. I believe that swearing needs to be put only in certain places to stress the importance of certain things in the story. I did not feel the cursing was put in the appropriate places in this story.

I was happy to see Darius and Grace at the end of this book though, it is always fun seeing other characters in a series.

There were no surprises in this book, which was a pity. On the back of the book the summary already tells you that the heroine is Jewel, she is also the Jewel of Dunamis, she is a prophet of sorts and knows all about everything (except herself). And that the hero, Grayson (Gray) James is a human who is an agent of the OBI (Otherworld Bureau of Investigation), which has sent him to Atlantis to obtain (for the American government) the Jewel of Dunamis or to destroy it. So, after Jewel and Gray meet the bulk of the story is them trying to get from point A to point B without much excitement. I read books to be entertained, so a story usually succeeds as long as it’s not too boring. Unfortunately, I found this story a little too boring. If I re-read it’ll be the first 100 pages and the last 30 pages for me.

4.5

I’m so annoyed I have to give this 4.5 stars and not 5! The very last scene is just not worthy of 5 no matter how much the rest of the book is worth. The final scene is the pinnacle and this one, although a perfect ending, was not well presented. Arg!

This was quite a cute story aside from the horrible life of the heroine prior to the hero’s entrance. Jewel/Pru/Blaze and other hilarious names is the very much coveted Jewel of Dunamis, one of the most powerful entities in Atlantis. Grayson James is an OBI agent sent in through the “secret” portals by his commanders to steal the Jewel. What the humans on the surface, who make up OBI, don’t know is that the Jewel is a living breathing human being, and one Gray finds himself instantly attached to.

Together they traverse Atlantis one step ahead of every ruler who wants to get their hands on Jewel, mainly the evil Demon Queen, Marina, who currently lays claim to the girl. Gray is determined to free Jewel from her lifelong enslavement and Jewel is determined to find some way to keep the man she has been waiting her whole life to have.

I’m loving this Atlantis series, it’s so imaginative, fun and sexy. Those are the best descriptors for it –at least the best ones I can come up with at the moment. Showalter knows how to show readers a good time and I can’t wait to read the next instalment.

I normally wouldn't have sought this out on my own, but it was selected for my fantasy book club. (I have this thing about covers with shirtless muscled men raising a red flag as far as quality in a book, and in this case, my bias was entirely correct). I live for a good action-packed and sexy pulp-fantasy romp, but this ain't it, folks...

Maybe this book deserves more like 2.5 stars. It started out strong. The hero was amusing with some good one liners that made me laugh. The descriptions of the creatures, settings, and trappings of Atlantis were interesting. But the interaction between the hero and love interest soon became very tiresome. Lots of hokey innuendo. Lots of he's so BIG and masculine and she's so delicate...drivel. Not much real substance. They escape from the demon queen and traipse around the woods and cities for most of the book, not much really happens. The end battle/climax involving the clasp of 3 royal armies lasts about 2 pages. The author's lack of knowledge of actual weapons, war, and self-defense tactics is pretty obvious.

Half way through I began thinking this is getting to be like a Harlequin romance novel...only after finishing the book did I realize it indeed was published by Harlequin. So I guess it was better than most Harlequin drivel, but in a lineup against other actually good well-written plot-driven books, its just plain drivel.

I love Gena Showalter. The worlds, people, creatures, relationships all seem so real.

There are only two things I'll throw stones at her for.
1. This book, possibly this whole series. After this book, I don't have the desire to continue reading them. It was WAY too sexual. I don't mind sex in books...obviously- I mostly read paranormal romance these days. BUT this book just grated on my nerves. I had to push myself to finish it. All the main characters thought about was sex sex sex. Arg! I mean it was in every paragraph. A look, a caress...I want her, I have to have him now. Bla, bla, bla, barf! It just wasn't believable and it took away from the plot 100%.

2. In every book she uses the word 'and' when she should use 'to'. These are not specific phrases but examples.... "try and kill him" "try and walk away"... you get the point. She does this a lot and every time I sigh just a little bit more. Damn you Readers Digest for pointing out a "way to sound smarter". Thanks to you, I now notice this mistake constantly in books.

This is my first time reading anything by Gena Showalter, and I doubt it will be my last. I absolutely loved the world that built in this book! The characters were so interesting (both the good and the bad) that I couldn't help flying through the pages.
The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because I felt the ending was sort of rushed. There were a lot of things that weren't explained fully enough (for me, anyway). Maybe some of the answers are in the next book? At any rate, I'd love to keep reading this series!

I loved this book. Gray was the perfect man. His sense of humor and him just being a pervert had me cracking up. His attitude just made him sexy and hot. It was just so sweet at the end how he just wanted to protect her and treat her like he had never treated any other woman. It was just sweet. He turned into such a thoughtful guy. And just reading some parts just had me smiling from ear to ear. It's a great book!
