Spring Challenge 2010 Completed Tasks

Book 1: Milan Kundera - Unbearable Lightness of Being
Book 2: Phillip Pullman - Subtle Knife
OK - Unbearable Lightness of Being was made into a movie by director Phillip Kaufman. Kaufman also directed Rising Sun by Michael Crichton, who also wrote Sphere, which starred Dustin Hoffman in the movie. Dustin Hoffman starred in Billy Bathgate with Nicole Kidman, who starred in The Golden Compass, Phililp Pullman's first book in the His Dark Material's Trilogy.
So that makes it Kundera - Kaufman - Crichton - Hoffman - Kidman - Pullman

I read Maria V. Snyder's Poison Study and Magic Study. She is a goodreads author!! I read them in the wrong order -- Magic Study first, then Poison Study. For some reason, I really preferred Magic Study. Whether that was because I read Magic Study first, or just the mood I was in.

This book is a tricky one. It had some great messages in it, but other messages and ideas that really conflicted with my religious beliefs. So I would say that everyone should read it, but just for inspiration on relationships and not take the religious aspects of it seriously. I think The Traveler's Gift should be at the top of the list.

When at all possible, *choose* happiness.
There are times that you can't choose it (think chemical imbalances, catastrophes, etc.), but all other things being equal, life is a lot better if you decide to enjoy it -- even when that feels like an un-enjoyable decision.
NOTE: Gretchen Rubin is a Goodreads author.

Diana Wynne Jones and Neil Gaiman are good friends. She dedicated her book Hexwood to Neil, and in the acknowledgments for Stardust, Diana is one of those thanked for her input to the story.

This series is amazing. Seriously, you should all read The Hunger Games and give it a shot. I know a lot of people stay away from YA books, but this series is wonderful. The characters are so likeable (or really easy to hate some of them), and Collins paints such vivid portraits of locations that she throws you directly in the middle of everything.

Change of Heart by Jodi Picooult
AND
Devil's Corner by Lisa Scottoline
20.6 Favorite Series
Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward
Part of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
A different kind of vampire novel. Great love scenes.
Each book tells a different brother's story. Very entertaining, I keep coming back to the series.

Ms. Alvarez and I share the name Julia

C. Charming Billy by Alice McDermott
Charming Billy was a five star book for me. It gave an interesting picture of how alcoholism can do so much collateral damage as well as the love, faith, and faithfulness a family can show for one another.

20.6-read a book from your favorite series.
I don't actually have a FAVORITE series, but I just read The 5th Horseman from the Women's Murder Club series by James Patterson.
I like most of his books because they are pretty quick reads. I like this series because they are quick reads, and they have good strong women characters. They have a bit of mystery and suspense, and sometimes they are not as predictable as you'd think.
You don't necessarily have to read them in order, but it does make a bit more sense to do it that way. Currently i belive there are 8 in this series.

20.3 - Best Review Contest - Amy MO - Mental Health
A) Along Came a Spider by James Patterson
The character Gary Soneji is first introduced to the reader as a likable teacher who goes out of his way to help his students. As the novel develops we are introduced to the many sides of Gary and are shown his Jackal/Hyde personality. The reader is torn between Soneji side and the Murphy side and we are never actually sure which is the true personality of the man. I thought James Patterson did a great job describing and making the reader feel the difficulty that a person living the double or triple life goes through while never knowing what the other side of their persona is doing. It made me question whether multiple personality is a justify mental illness or a way for people to get out of their normal lives. I am going to read more about this disorder to get a complete understanding of the different situations of this that people are dealing with.

Didn't realize that book was about a mental disorder...I may have to read it now for this task (i've had it on my bookshelf for years)
sounds like you enjoyed it.

I only started reading The Lightning Thief to complete the Gods task and found that I loved it! I thought it was a cute, funny book and immediately wanted to read the rest of the series. The Last Olympian is the last one in the series and it was my favorite. I thought it did a good job of tying up the series and I am excited for my younger boys to read this series when they are old enough. It had lots of action and funny moments!

20.10 The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

I thought Undead and Unwed was good. This series could easily become an addiction for me. Betsy gets hit by a car, dies, and becomes a vampire. She tells the people she loves that she is a vampire, including her step-mother who took all of Betsy's designer shoes when she died. Betsy isn't too happy about that! I really couldn't stop giggling over Betsy's antics. There were some very humorous bits in this book and it was a lot more raunchy then I thought it was going to be. It's a fun quick read for anyone wanting a break from reality, as long as you don't mind the raunchy bits. I will be definitely be reading the rest of this series when I need a break.

I read Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire. Both books are over 500 pages.
I really enjoyed Dragon Tattoo but I have to say that his second book was even better than the first. It was far more thrilling and harder to put down. Definitely a superior second!

Firstly, thank you, Diane, for this task. I thought I'd have a heck of a time finding a book who's author shared my name. I don't have a middle name, my first name is uncommon and my last name is even less common. Although it wasn't easy, I found a book and really enjoyed it.
I quite enjoyed All This Belongs To Me. It's an interesting, multi-generational family saga. The story takes place in Russian-ruled Mongolia at a fairly recent time (year unknown).
It tells a tale of life on the Steppes, infidelity, the fallout of this act, transplantation into the City and the pitfalls that Country girls are faced with. It also tells of the many secrets that we have from each other and how these secrets continue to live around us and with us; despite our lack of knowledge of them.
The lifestyles and thought patterns of this country are different and I would be interested in learning more about this culture. This was a warm and interesting story.
I'd never read Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret before but anyone mentioning it has always commented on how good/sweet it was. I have to agree. This was a really sweet story of a girl beginning to question who she was now and who she might one day become. The main character's name is Margaret Ann Simon.

The Turtle Catcher by Nicole Helget, in which the title character has an unspecified developmental disabiliy. Most of the rest of the characters have other emotional and mental problems of varying strengths.
15.8 A Beautiful Thing..."
Caravaggio: A Novel by Christopher Peachmentfeatures an artist who led a rather short and violent life. Painting in the late 1500s and the first decade of 1600, he left a number of striking paintings. Whenever I go to the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City I try to spend a few minutes with his St. John the Baptist.(When they have it on display.) http://www.nelson-atkins.org/art/Coll... There is something about the brooding melancholy figure that appeals to me.
20.8 Happy Birthday to You--Rachel Lee
I had to read two books for this one to make up 500 pages.
The Enchantment Emporium by Tanya Huff, in which Calgary, Canada is made safe from Dragon Lords, thanks to magic and pie. 304 pages e-book
Storm Rising by Mercedes Lackey, volume 2 of series 384 pages
25.4 Diane's Task: The Name Game:
A.
Murder With Puffins by Donna Andrews The second book of the Meg Langslow series. I would love these books books for the punny titles alone. I must admit Meg's family are highly annoying, but they are what drives the story.
B. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot was just an amazing story--make that three stories. The story of Henrietta Lacks,a young black woman whose cancer cells have provided most of the material for cancer research being done today; the story of Skloot and the Lacks family's investigations, and the story of the use of those cells.

15.6 - Friends and Friends of Friends
A.For the first part of this task read a book that is popular among the lists of your Goodreads friends that you have never read...to see a list of these books click on this link Popular Books
I read: Slaughterhouse-Five, or The Children's Crusade by Kurt Vonnegut (cloth, 224 pages), which was nominated for both the Hugo Award (1970) and Nebula Award (1969). A quick read about a man who becomes “unstuck in time”. Most of the action occurs in a World War II Prison Camp located in Dresden, Germany. Very unusual and original “novel”.
AND
B.For the second part of this task click on this link (Friends Of Friends) and select the first person on this list and read a 5 star book from their list
For me, that person was: Kathryn Louw
Friends Sandie Jones, Dlmrose, and Sandra Antunovic with:
The 5 star book from her list that I read was:
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, Peter Sis (Illustrator) (Paperback, 211 pages) Newbery Medal winner (1963)
I read this originally in the 1968-1974 timeframe. I remember not really *getting* the story at that time. This time around, I understood the story better, but I still wasn’t impressed. Events happen randomly, characters are unbelievable (except for Meg’s mom), there was a slam at big families (Calvin’s), and it just wasn’t that good a story. One star.

The debut novel and the second published novel often garner much attention by critics, particularly for authors who gain a great deal of notoriety for their first books. Now you be the critic. Choose an author and read his/her first and second books published. When you post your completed task, state which book you preferred and why.
Black Echo and Black Ice by Connolly (The second book, Black Ice, was slightly more excellent than the first book because I have read later books and they both especially the second book fill in the details that I had been missing).

Part of a series on the seven deadly sins, this book examines envy. Different from jealousy, envy is tinged with malice. The envious want to destroy the happiness of others. Envy steals satisfaction and collects injustice.

B. Award winner post 1950: The Road Pulitzer Prize 2007
Hitty is a memoir by a wooden doll that tells of her owners and their adventures from the 1830's to her present in 1929: from a whaling ship adventure and shipwreck, a South Seas Island, the streets of India, a Quaker home, The Civil War, mothballed in attics, part of a cherished doll collection, to waiting on an antique shop shelf. This book was really charming- there were parts that were not PC, but I think some adult guidance would smooth that out.
The Road was devastating. I think I held my breath the entire time I read it. I'm still reeling, but I couldn't put it down. It said so much about humanity in an inhuman world.
