5.4 Goodreads Newsletter Jan 2010: Catching Fire 5*
Tremendous followon to Hunger Games - the first of the trilogy. Usually the 2nd novel pales a little in comparison to a blockbuster first - but in this case the author kept the story and writing style at the same high caliber. Can't wait for the third to come out late summer.
10.6 Oscar: Push 4*
Good book, pretty intense. Left you with a lot to think about - there is definitely another world in which some children are forced to endure as they grow up.
10.7 True Crime: Lucky 4*
An amazing accounting by Alice Sebold of her rape as a freshman in college. The story takes us through the rape, the legal process, the adjusting, and all of the aftermath. Well written and even more stunning because it was true.

The Map Thief: A Novel
I really can't choose. I enjoyed both books equally. What is interesting is that I listened to the audiobook of one and read the e-book of the other. I thought that might have made a difference in my preference, but it didn't. These are Terrell's first two books about an attorney named Mara Coyne who almost accidentally is involved in repatriating stolen artifacts to the rightful owners. If she continues to write these books, I will continue to read them.

The story itself was good, just a little long in parts.

Read a book written by an author who lived during her lifetime (May 24, 1819 – January 22, 1901).
A Little Princess
I haven't read this book in a really long time, and though I remembered the basic story idea and as a child watched and re-watched the Shirley Temple film (which I eerily suddenly remembered the ending of as I read this again, and remembered that the endings are very very different!) I teared up in a few places, and this book means so much more to me now than it did then. I must have loved this story, though I didn't understand some of the things that I do now. Can't wait to share this one with my daughter when she's the right age!
ETA: Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in 1849 and died in 1924.

I finished 15.4 Birthstones with
A. stone: Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise and
B. meaning: Innocent in Death
20.6, Bridgit's favorite series with
Nowhere to Run by C.J. Box
Nowhere to Run is the 10th in the Joe Pickett series. Joe is a Wyoming game warden responsible for more than 5,000 square miles of wilderness. He has run up against environmental activists, ruthless land developers, corrupt bureaucrats, and desperate people either hiding from or looking for something in the mountains. Joe has no superhero skills; he is just an honest man who wants to do his job. He loves his wife and his daughters, his dogs and his horse. The books are violent, grisly, and bloody, but they are also just and principled, thoughtful and honest. Always fast-paced page-turners, I think these books are best read in order to see the rich character development.

For this task I read City of Glass by Cassandra Clare and the Constant Princess by Phillipa Gregory. These two books totaled 1027 pages.
30.5 6 degrees of separation
For this task I read New Moon by Stephanie Meyer. Stephanie Meyer posted a blurb on the cover of City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare. This is one degree of separation (or three if Stephanie communicated the blurb to her agent, who talked to Cassandra's publicist, who spoke to Cassandra about it.)

I read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and James Potter and the Hall of Elders' Crossing (by G. Norman Lippert, who is a Goodreads author).
I really enjoyed the beginning of James Potter's story and found it to be just as exciting and whimsical as J. K. Rowling's works. I'll be reading the next two (so far) books in Lippert's spin-off.

fiction: Luncheon of the Boating Party
I have a very specific sense memory of Renoir's Danse a la Campagne
It brings back a perfect day in Paris.
15.10, philosophy, with
Introduction to Metaphysics by Martin Heidegger This book of lectures from 1929 is a tough read (footnotes in Greek- not helpful if you don't know Greek) but I remember it from college philosophy classes as what introduced me to asking "why the why?" and the larger questions of being. My personal philosophy these days has evolved into- "live and let live", with a good dose of "it is what it is" and the practical "play it as it lies"

The Road by Cormac McCarthy
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer (friend of friends - Jamie B)
These were both great books.

25.2 I read Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë. Agnes Grey was her first book. I enjoyed it but thought that The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was much better. I thought it told more of a story and developed its characters better.
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was 576 pages for a big book ticket.

5.6 - May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month
I read An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro. It takes place in Japan, all the characters are Japanese, and Ishiguro was born in Japan.
25.10 Melissa GA's Task - Deja Vu
For this task I read Please Pass the Guilt: A Nero Wolfe Novel by Rex Stout and Death on Deadline: A Nero Wolfe Mystery by Robert Goldsborough
I expected to be disappointed by the Goldsborough book, but was pleasantly surprised. I actually liked it better than this particular Rex Stout Nero Wolfe. As I got into the Goldsborough book, I really didn't see much difference and I thought the characters were very true to the Stout books.

Eleven on Top by Janet Evanovich
This is one of my all-time favorite series. Every book I've read so far as made me laugh out loud at some point. This book wasn't the best in the series, but it still had a lot of funny moments. The ending felt really rushed to me and I wanted to know more of what happened. I'm guessing I'll find out more as I continue the series because the character in question makes an appearance in every installment.

15.8 Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland. The book is about a Vermeer painting and tells the story of each of the owners of the painting and how it chagned hands, from present day back to Vermeer and his daughter who modeled for it.
My favorite of his is The Love Letter. I really like Vermeer because he paints real life and makes individual moments seem so special and important.
Also finished 15.10 All's Well That Ends Well by Shakespeare. I definitely believe that sometimes you have to go through some pain and struggle in order for you to get what you want. The hard work is worth it and pays off in the end.

I finished another one!
25.3 - Coralie's Task - Coming Out Of Hibernation
Attend a live sporting event or musical or drama event and read a book that is somehow connected to the event.
On Sunday, April 11, 2010, a local dinner theatre named “The Shakespeare Tavern” performed Shakespeare’s “ Taming of the Shrew ”. I was there! :0) The “book that is somehow connected to the event” I read was: A Midsummer Tempest (1974) by Poul Anderson (Mass Market Paperback, 229 pages). The premise of this fantasy novel: every word written by Shakespeare was literally true! Characters from A Midsummers Night's Dream and The Tempest are featured. The connection (obviously): Shakespeare’s plays!
A Midsummer Tempest won the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award (1975); it was also a nominee for Nebula Award (1976) and a nominee for the World Fantasy Award (1975). Poul Anderson is one of my favorite science fiction novelists of all time. This book shows that he could write fantasy (and rhyming couplets!) as well. In this novel, Anderson takes real-life events and combines and changes them using characters from fiction and a dollop of magic. Many authors have tried this, and it is a hard thing to do well. I think Anderson succeeds. It helps if, before reading this novel, a reader has some knowledge of the English Civil War (King Charles I vs. Oliver Cromwell).
