Spring Challenge 2010 Completed Tasks

I read Broken by Kelley Armstrong and Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead. Both are urban fantasies about werewolves and demons respectively.
I find that I’ve been hitting up my guilty pleasure reading a lot more heavily than usual lately. It’s the sleep-deprived, full-time working and nursing mama gig driving me to this mindless, brainless fluff. And thank God for it, seriously, or I’d go insane!
I think that puts me at 170 points.

I laughed reading your post. With 2 kids under the age of 4, I have very little time, patience and focus. I read a LOT more mindless, brainless fluff and thankful for it!

5.9: The Trouble With Magic by Madelyn Alt
25.9: The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky (1999)

My youngest (I have three -- 3.5 years between first and last) is in kindergarten this year. I am STILL reading crap as my brain recovers from those years of sleep deprivation!

5.6 Asian/Pacific: Blu's Hanging 3*
A rather unusual book written in pidgin English set in Hawaii and written by a Hawaiian author. Was interesting in that it showed what a great cultural disparity there is on the Hawaiian Islands.
15.4 Gems and Meaning:
A. Diamond: The Diamond Secret: A Retelling of "Anastasia" 3*
B. Innocence: Mrs. Pollifax, Innocent Tourist 3*
Both these novels were fun and fluffy - not too deep but great escapism. The Mrs. Pollifax series is really fun to read.
20.4 Heidi - Our History
A. Family Saga: City of Dreams: A Novel of Nieuw Amsterdam and Early Manhattan 5*
512 Pages so it qualifies for a Big Book ticket
This is a reread of one of the best family sagas ever. I just finished the 3rd book in the series for the last challenge and decided to reread the first which I had read a couple of years ago. Beverly Swerling has created a marvelous series which chronicles the Turner family from the 1600's in Manhatten through the Civil War. And there is another one coming! Great series which traces not only the family but the history of this area and the development of medical practices - totally amazing. I highly recommend for those who really like historical fiction.
B. Local Area: Dead Witch Walking 5*
This was a freebie from Amazon for my Kindle - a book in a series called "The Hollows". I thought it might be just fluffy and only was interested because it takes place in Cincinnati, OH which is in my state and meets the requirement for this task. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised - it is the first book in a totally entertaining series which has lots of action, humor and great characters. Now I am on a journey into a new series.

5.9) "I think even lying on my bed I can still do something." - Nobody's Fool
10.2) Three/Four/Five - Hotel California: The True-life Adventures of Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Mitchell, Taylor, Browne, Ronstadt, Geffen, the Eagles, and Their Many Friends
The book was rated 3.45 when I started to read it.
10.9) "A lovely horse is always an experience..." - The Horse and His Boy
15.1) Independently Speaking -
A. A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, which is set in Sierra Leone and tells the story of a boy who grew up in their war-torn cities, and forced into becoming a boy soldier.
B. The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde is from Ireland
15.7) Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason
Part of me agrees with the tying of "lust" to this book. Nancy Pearl details lists of recommended books that people should read in this story. I think of lust as more the craving of something superficially, without (sometimes) a lot of thought into that desire. This can be disastrous, in the realm of overzealous book reading or pining after someone's body in that it can lead to poor decisions and rash judgments, as well as take over the mind until you satisfy the craving, like an addiction. I think gluttony would be as fitting as lust in regards to the title of this book. I know when I am choosing what to check out from the library, it's like a Lays potato chip--I can't stop at just one! I have to check out several books at a time and can't read just one book at a time either.
20.10) Group Reads - The Handmaid's Tale
30.6) Character References - Breaking Back: How I Lost Everything and Won Back My Life & Days Of Grace: A Memoir
James Blake mentions a proverb referenced in Arthur Ashe's memoir, as well as mentions Arthur Ashe's memoir a couple of times in his book.
This should bring my total to 150 points.

Congratulations, Pjreads!

There is an extremely thin woman on the cover and I need to lose some weight. I spent the winter eating and reading. No problems with the reading, but the eating has got to stop! However, I wouldn't recommend this book as a way to get it done. The author is militantly anti-dairy, meat, poultry, and fish. She also believes that all food should be organic and that sugar, sugar substitutes, and any processed food is evil. This book should be called skinny and homicidal because, if I followed it, I would kill someone!

20.8 A Magical Birthday: The Realms of the Gods by Tamora Pierce (Goodreads author) and Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones. A total of 548 pgs.
25.4 The Name Game: The Joys of Love by Madeleine L'Engle who shares my first name and The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones
Total: 80
On a side note I read a small bit of that skinny bitch book and couldn't stand it. Your review made me smile Belinda!

The first book I read was Making Toast: A Family Story. The author is a writer and this book was a memoir of what happened with his family after his daughter died. In one part he mentions reading Anne Tyler's Accidental Tourist, which I read for the second part of this task. I didn't really care for either book, and the ending of "The Accidental Tourist" was just annoying, maddening, and frustrating. I've heard nothing but good things about Anne Tyler's works, and this book just doesn't sell me on her. I own 2 other books by her, and I am in no rush to get to them.

Everything Happens for a Reason: Finding the True Meaning of the Events in Our Lives by Mira Kirshenbaum-4/14
I have always believed that when ever something good or bad happens to us, there is a reason for it. One of the things I really enjoyed about this books was that it had 10 reasons why something happens and each chapter gave examples and showed how to find meaning in an event. This was a very powerful book and I plan to purchase it!

I completed Task 15.9 with Blaze: A Novel by Richard Bachman (aka Stephen King).
What a marvelous find of a book! I didn't expect to find such a gem from Stephen King. I gave it 5*.
Blaze's story is so sad. I really felt for Blaze in his loneliness and confusion and to really dislike those who turned their backs on him time and time again.
Richard Bachman has much better character developement than any King book I've read.
I've written a more detailed review in the Review Forum.

15.2 Anzac day
The Forgotten Garden set in Australia, this one took me a while to get into as it jumped around from different narrators and settings, but I ended up really enjoying it.
Deafening set during WWI kind of jumped around from the perspective of a deaf girl going through life and the hearing man she married as a soldier in the war. Wasn't a huge fan of this one.

PJ, I think the tasks in this Challenge are my favorites yet. They're all so good. I'm already sorry about the books I won't be able to get to.

Since I got to choose whatever I wanted, I read two books I've wanted to read for awhile, Nightlight by The Harvard Lampoon and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. I absolutely loved The Guernsey book. I hated for it to end, I felt like I was leaving old friends. As for the Nightlight, it's a parody of Twilight. It was funny and snarky, and a nice light read.

The Immortal series is about a girl named Ever, and her relationship through the centuries with an Immortal named Damen. In each of her various incarnations, something has prevented them from having a happy ending. The series is about the trials and tests they go through in modern time, and the risks they will take to be together.
I keep forgetting to claim when authors are goodreads authors, but I remembered this time! Alyson Noel is a Goodreads author. And I also highly recommend this series. I love it!

Envy by Sandra Brown
As the title says the sin is envy. Envy over another persons talent/success. Envy that consumes for 14 years to the point that envy turns into revenge/murder. This is an interesting book as it is a book within a book. The book is being written as the plot for revenge is revealed.

I don't know but it bothers me when someone tries to capitalize on the popularity of a classic. March didn't come close to the original. The same thing bothered me when I read Scarlett. 10.9 I read They Shoot Horses, Don't They by Horace McCoy
15.7 I read the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
The sin of the book is wrath. In the book wrath was written as being a necessity and a good thing. Without wrath hopelessness and loss of dignity ensued. In this instance, I don't believe that wrath was a deadly sin.
My copy of The Grapes of Wrath was 586 pages for a big book ticket.

As for The Rule of Four, I was rather harsh on the rating and gave it a 2*. I contemplated a 3 but don't think I liked it that much. It wasn't very compelling or engaging, although it was interesting.
I enjoyed the mystery of deciphering the Hypnerotomachia. I am always amazed at the depth of knowledge that is required to decipher ancient texts accurately, be it a book such as the Hypnerotomachia or The Bible. This book, despite being fictional, gives an indication of the effort, knowledge and commitment it takes to accomplish such a task.
However, that's the best part of this book. The characters aren't engaging and the "coming of age-contemplating the future-coming to terms with the past" part of the story takes away from the book. The attempt of a love interest could have been removed completely and the story would have read the same, maybe better.
This book was an easy, fluffy read. Entertaining but not memorable.

10.4 (Reduce) Kitty's House of Horrors by Carrie Vaughn
25.4 (a) Pretty in Plaid: A Life, a Witch, and a Wardrobe, or, the Wonder Years Before the Condescending, Egomanical, Self-Centered Smart-Ass Phase by Jen Lancaster
(b) Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
50 I went to the website to roll because I have absolutely no idea where I have a pair of dice. I rolled a "5" (poetry) and a "2" (nonfiction), but together they added up to "7" which meant I got to read anything I wanted! And as it so happens, I have read two books this challenge that didn't fit into any of the tasks that I had yet to finish. So, the books for this task are Crazy Salad: Some Things About Women by Nora Ephron and The Good, the Bad, and the Uncanny by Simon R. Green. The first book was an eclectic assortment of essays that I enjoyed. The second was the tenth book in a noir-type urban fantasy series, but was a disappointment.

I finished 20.3 Thirteen Reasons Why. In this book the main character commits suicide. The book explains how small for other people things snowballed and caused her to end her life. The book was fabulous by the way!
The main thing I learned from the book is how small interactions can affect people. So we must always think how our actions would influence another person's life.
