Ruby (rubina310) I've just completed the 50 point task!

Book 2: I rolled another 4 (20th or 21st century literature) so I read a Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.
Supplement: One of the books had to have won an award (Total=8) and this applies to Book 2 which won the Pulitzer in 1981.

I am now at 85 points :-)

Belinda (bindyb) | 242 comments 20.4 Murder in Irvington
This is set in my neighborhood in Indianapolis. It is the fictionalized account of D.C. Stephenson, the head of the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana during the 1920's, who was finally brought down after being convicted on kidnapping, raping, and murdering an Irvington woman.

and

I Love You, Miss Huddleston: And Other Inappropriate Longings of My Indiana Childhood
This is the memoir of a man who grew up in small town Indiana during the 1960's and 1970's. It reminded me of my own childhood when kids had lives apart from their parents and teachers.

Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett
My years were 1976-1983. Ken Follett had his first success with this book in 1978. He has sold more than 90 million copies of his books. Donald Sutherland starred in the 1981 movie and he will appear in the upcoming mini-series based on The Pillars of the Earth

From my TBR, I read The Girl Next Door A Novel by Elizabeth Noble The Girl Next Door by Elizabeth Noble.

DEGREES OF SEPARATION:
1) Elizabeth Noble belongs to the same literary agency (Curtis Brown) as Chris Bohjalian.
2) Chris Bohjalian wrote "Midwives," which was turned into a movie with Sissy Spacek.
3) Sissy Spacek was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar in 1982, as was Julie Andrews. [NOTE: Although general awards are not okay, competing for the same award in the same category in the same year was okayed.]
4) Julie Andrews was in the movie "The Princess Diaries," which was written by Meg Cabot.

So four degrees later, I got to Meg Cabot and I read Queen of Babble Gets Hitched (Queen of Babble, #3) by Meg Cabot Queen of Babble Gets Hitched by Meg Cabot.

Petra I finished Task 25.3 (Coming Out Of Hibernation) by reading The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons, which is set in Communist Russia, and seeing Fiddler On The Roof at a local High School (Terry Fox High) on March 6th. Fiddler is also set in Russia.

I'd like to claim a Big Book ticket for this one. My copy has 656 pages. It's the fourth version of the book on the page linked. I can't get it to link to the right version of book. Sorry.

I really enjoyed the musical of Fiddler On The Roof. Musicals are a favorite of mine and I could watch them over and over and never tire of them.
I can't say the same about The Bronze Horseman. I gave it 1*.
I love a good Russian book. Communist Russia, fear, desolation, hardship, strong people with true hearts, the occasional drunk who lives for the next shot of vodka, integrity, grit, love, valour.....what's not to love??
If these are things you expect and look for in a novel set in Russia, run quickly....this book is NOT for you!
The characters are weak, the dialogue is choppy, insane, unbelievable. The story is full of "convenient" solutions to every problem. My jaw fell open numerous times at the insane scenes in this book.
There are no surprises for the Reader. Everything is crystal clear long before it happens.

A. Animal Narrator...
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein (Goodreads author - 5*)

I knew from page one that this book would break my heart. I kept reading anyway. Then, I couldn't put it down. It is a one of a kind story.

B. People And Animal Bonds......
Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl by Stacey O'Brien(5*)

Ms. O'Brien adopted an injured three day old barn owl, which becomes a nineteen year commitment. I loved this book. It was filled with fascinating facts about owl biology and behavior. It was also a great biography with many spiritual insights about nature, funny observations, and quirky situations.

Ashley FL | 721 comments For Task 5.7 I read House Rules by Jodi Picoult. The main character is a boy with Asperber's. I really enjoy her books, and this book was meticulously researched, but the story itself annoyed me. It was a 550 page book that could have resolved in 50 pages if the characters had just asked a few questions -- and these were the sorts of characters that *would* have asked those questions. Even I knew the ending by about page 50 -- and I NEVER know the ends of books before they happen.

For Task 25.5 (Spring Cleaning), I read Gotta Have It by Lori Wilde (248 pages), Speed Dating by Nancy Warren (256 pages) and Kiss an Angel by Susan Elizabeth Philips (384 pages) for a total of 888 pages. The best part of this challenge was it made me realize there are books on my shelf I just don't want to read, so I'll be passing those on to more willing readers!

This brings me to 955 points.

This book is about a sleuth/restaurant owner. Though gluttony, as it is related to food is mentioned several times early on, the book is really more about greed. As to gluttony, Americans eating habits are killing them. There is a veritable epidemic of diseases caused by obesity, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Katie | 4 comments Congratulations to all the finishers! I'm nowhere close to finishing, but I did complete a few more tasks.

5.7 (March Is Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month) - I read Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. I didn't think it was that great. I'm not sure what all the fuss is. 2* from me.

20.9 (A Really Cheesy Task) - I read How to Overthrow the Government by Arianna Huffington. Government is apparently a type of cheese. The book wasn't great, though I've been meaning to read it for a while (remnant of my old PoliSci student days). I'm glad I was able to get it off my TBR shelf.

25.8 (Talk to the Animals) - I read:

B. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
Loved them both! Thanks for a great task, Helen.

Susan | 682 comments 20.3 "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield

It seemed like the majority of the characters in this book had some time to of mental ailment, but of course the main characters were the the most afflicted. The writer never really says what is wrong with the twins, but I think it may have been a result of their parentage. (I'm trying not to give away the mystery here). It was a long book with alot of twists and turns, so sometimes it was hard to tell what was real and what wasn't. I can't say I learned anything about mental illness, as it wasn't the topic of the book, but I liked the book.

Nicole | 1295 comments I just completed task 25.1, Future Aspirations. I read The True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters because there is a picture of a little girl on the cover and I would love to have a kid one of these days. In fact, it's sort of a work in progress (just making some changes to my eating and trying to lose 20 pounds before we officially start). I have always wanted children. I know my husband will be an amazing dad and I am looking forward to finally having my own child to lavish my knowledge and love upon. I teach, so that's where my heart is a lot of the time. It will be so different when I have a child of my own! So that's what I want and why. That covers it, right? :)

Deirdre Skaggs (deirdre04) | 101 comments 15.9 Read a book written under a pseudonym.

I read Blaze A Novel by Stephen King , which is not by Stephen King like the link says, but by his late 60s-early 70s alter ego, Richard Bachman. Stephen King wrote a forward for the book, which I think has everyone confused as to who the actual author is (especially since King's name is even bigger than Bachman's on the cover). Anyway, I posted the cover so that you can see that Richard Bachman is the name at the top, the author, while Stephen King's name is preceded (in small, black letters) by "Foreword by".

Were I to write under a pseudonym, I would choose the name Savannah Belle. First of all, I would want something different, something that stands out. But second, and most important, I came across this name because it is a combination of the names of my two boxer pups, the loves of my life: Savannah and Ellabelle.

Attend a live sporting event or musical or drama event and read a book that is somehow connected to the event. I don't care how major or minor the event is as long as it is outside your home and involves a live performance.

Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder by Richard Louv

This entire book was basically about how good nature is for children and how they don't get enough exposure to the natural world. For Earth Day, I took my 6-month old daughter on a little "nature day." We threw out a blanket in the grass and I let her play with various natural elements (blades of grass, a stick, a leaf, etc.) and then we wandered around and looked at lots of different flowers and trees. The day before, I took her for a run (me running, her in her stroller) on the scenic, wooded bike path in our town.

Petra This weekend has been great for finishing off most of my long-started books. Finally!

I finished Task 20.1 (April Fool) by reading Christopher Moore's Fool.
I started this book a few weeks ago while recovering from a cold and wasn't taken by it at first. I think it was the cold. This book was priceless in it's one-liners. It was bawdy, lustful and intriguing. It had deceit, backstabbing and shagging....lots and lots of shagging.
The characters of Pocket and Drool were burst-out-loud laughable and yet also endearing.

Talking to the Dead: A Novel by Helen Dunmore This was a rather unsettling book about two sister who lead rather different lives, one married with a new baby and one not. Both have been affected by the death years before of their baby brother. Between them they may or may not tell the story of their lives. I'm giving this 4*; although I can't say I was crazy about the book, it was well told.

Love, Angela Carter.

B. A non-fiction book about a mental health issue/disorder (or it can be about a variety of mental health disorders). When you post, tell us what mental health disorder your book featured and what you learned about that particular mental health disorder from reading the book.
Hystories, Elaine Showalter.

Showalter covers a wide variety of issues, from chronic fatigue syndrome to dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality syndrome) to Gulf War Syndrome. Her take on many of these (keeping in mind this book was published in 1997 when a lot of these things were relatively new issues in the medical field) are that rarely are these experiences of organic background, but rather that they stem from a psychological one. She agrees the symptoms are exceptionally real, but they may not be from a wholly biological cause. Even more controversial is she includes discussions of satanic ritual abuse, alien abductions and repressed memories of incest or other childhood sexual abuse, suggesting a lot of these sorts of memories are often iatrogenic.

The exact mental illness for one of the main characters in The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary is never defined by name, but it's very clearly some form of paranoid schizophrenia. The thing I learned about the disorder is how perfectly normal someone can seem while still suffering from this disabling condition. The "madman" in the book is very intelligent and classy, yet harbors many demons that interfere with his daily life.

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 811 comments #30.5 PJ Read as suggested by Tanja: Six Degrees of Separation
A. Read any book off your TBR: One Second After by Wm. Forstchen Apr18

Degrees of Separation
1. Newt Gingrich wrote the introduction of One Second After
2. Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House during Clinton administration
3. (I took this statement from Tanja's approval: Thanks, Tanja!) During his tenure as Speaker, Gingrich represented the public face of the Republican opposition to President Bill Clinton. Dick Morris, a longtime friend and advisor to Bill Clinton during his time as Governor of Arkansas, became a political adviser to the White House after Clinton was elected president in 1992. Chances are Gingrich and Morris met or debated over things during that timeframe let along on (the Human Events) website. So in this case, YES.
4. In his recent newsletter, Dick Morris mentions Andrew Napolitano and his newest book, Lies the Government Told You Myth Power and Deception in American History
5. Napolitano also wrote Constitutional Chaos What Happens When the Government Breaks Its Own Laws

B. Constitutional Chaos: What Happens When the Government Breaks Its Own Laws by Andrew Napolitano Apr 25

For this, you either need a die or to go to ROLL THE DICE for your roll. The numbers you roll (first die, then second die) will let you know what genre of book you will read. You will read two books total for this task.

A. Rolled a 3 for Romance: Morning Glory by LaVyrle Spencer April 2
This is just a beautiful love story

B. Rolled a 4 for 20th or 21st C. Literature: The Road by Cormac McCarthy Mar 20

Kate Cooley Hi,

I have just read The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry for task 15.3 once in a life time. I loved this book and definitly think it should be on the list, possibly top. If not this then definitly Frankinstein by Mary Shelly should be top, for not only a great portayal of humanity but also her amazing descriptions of the landscape.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) TASK 5.10 - Author who lived during Queen Victoria's lifetime

I finally finished another one, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, which was a LONG one at 1276 pages . Alexandre Dumas lived from 1802 - 1870, and the book was written in the 1830's. This may seem to be a really long book for just 5 points, but it is well worth the time. I am giving this book 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone who has not read it. Now that I have finished this one, though, I am hoping to be able to read a number between now and the end of May.

I am also entering this book in the "I like big books" challenge if I can.
