Congratulations on finishing even with a new baby! I'm always so impressed by all the parents of young kids who still manage to find time to read for themselves.

Rosemary | 546 comments This year for the first time I read in order, and it definitely made it more of a challenge. I'd love to do that again :)

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
The Bees by Laline Paull
The Carlyles at Home by Thea Holme
Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfouz
Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata
The House in the Cerulean Sea by T J Klune
There Were No Windows by Norah Hoult

My most creative twist on a prompt
Heartstopper: Volume One by Alice Oseman
for "A book related to the end"
because if your heart stops, that's the end ;)

The prompt I cheated on
Cheat? Moi? ;)

My favorite prompt
48. A book that might cause someone to react “You read what?!?”
because it gave me a reason to read Robot Sex: Social and Ethical Implications

My least favorite prompt
Goodreads Choice awards.
Every year I vote against this prompt and every year it gets in. I have hope for this year... waiting eagerly for results of latest poll ;)

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Robot Sex, as above. Not because it was such a great book, just because I am so glad to move it off my shelves ;)

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Nothing - no stinkers for me from the books I read for this challenge

message 53: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Architect's Apprentice by Elif Shafak (Muslim author or character)
Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley (mystery or thriller)
To The Bright Edge of the World by Eowyn Ivey (connected to ice)

My most creative twist on a prompt
I used a social justice theme for my past, present, future books:
Fight of the Century: Writers Reflect on 100 Years of Landmark ACLU Cases
Youth to Power: Your Voice and How to Use It
Resist: Tales from a Future Worth Fighting Against

The prompt I cheated on
Building in the title - I read High Towers which technically counts, but they had absolutely nothing to do with the story so I felt like I should have read something else after I finished it :)

My favorite prompt
Warwick Prize - I also do the Reading Women Challenge and went with the suggested international focus for that list this year, so several of the books I read were from this ATY listopia (and I will keep coming back to that list for more great books)

My least favorite prompt
About racism or race relations - I had read a lot of these in 2020 for personal interest and it was difficult to find another one I wanted to read this year because I "had to"

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Most of the books I read were already on my shelf - but after I decided The Master and Margarita cover wasn't quite monochromatic enough for me, I got Or What You Will by Jo Walton on interlibrary loan, and was delighted by the "meta" aspect of the story.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
The Constant Princess by Philippa Gregory and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi were both disappointing. They were on my TBR so I would have read them anyway, but I probably would have DNF'd both of them if I wasn't reading them for the challenge.

Jacque T | 305 comments 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
I'm stingy with 5* books so was surprised by how many:
The Vanishing Half, The House in the Cerulean Sea, The Midnight Library, Beartown, Us Against You

My most creative twist on a prompt
I enjoyed the past/present/future looking at race relations in three times: Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, Reconstructing the Gospel: Finding Freedom from Slaveholder Religion and How Long 'til Black Future Month?

The prompt I cheated on none

My favorite prompt I love diversity prompts so immigrant, new-to-me BIPOC, and I also love the Warwick Prize

My least favorite prompt Random Word Although it worked out for me (my word was refrigerator and Round Ireland with a Fridge was on my TBR) I am not fond of random anything--goes against my OCD planning tendencies

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) The Huntress and The Midnight Library moved to top of tbr because of challenge and I'm glad they did

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) I would have DNF'd The Remains of the Day had I not been reading it for the challenge. Was not the right book at the right time.

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 246 comments Hi all, happy completing to you all.
I finished my challenge yesterday after having a strategic shuffle around. i was on a year long book ban so I read things I had already or that I could get from the library. Very happy nothing was less than 2 stars.

My plan can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
But my stats are:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = 11
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = 21
⭐️⭐️⭐️ = 17
⭐️⭐️ = 3
⭐️ = 0

Fiction= 45
Non-Fict= 7

New Author= 37
Not New= 15

📕Owned= 27
🆖Netgalley= 14
📚Library= 10
❎Re-Read= 1

A few of my five stars are:
American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward You Love Me (You, #3) by Caroline Kepnes The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot Perfect for fans of uplifting book club fiction by Marianne Cronin

The prompt I cheated on was the Egyptian museum one and I went with The Maidens by Alex Michaelides only because of the statue on the cover which can be found in a museum?! It's a tedious link I know.

message 56: by Ann (new)

Ann S | 624 comments I did it. 150 books and all the prompts. I do know my favorite book was The House in the Cerulean Sea
And the prompt I hated was a long book, as well as a short book. I know, weird. Don't think I cheated much, just had fun.

One of my favorites of the year and one of the ones I recommend to other people now. Thanks to this group to introducing me to it!

GailW (abbygg) | 657 comments 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Way too many. I don't know if I rate easy or if I read really, really great books this year:
The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell
An Extravagant Death
The Things We Cannot Say
The Four Winds
The Murmur of Bees
This Tender Land
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
Untethered: An Exploration of Bipolar Disorder Through Art and Prose
Miss Benson's Beetle
A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World
When the Stars Go Dark
Five Equations That Changed the World
The Dutch House
The Push
Other Words for Home
Anxious People
Homegoing
If Beale Street Could Talk
The Stationery Shop
The Friend

My most creative twist on a prompt
#49 an ensemble cast: Turn a Blind Eye

The prompt I cheated on
#38 a book related to a word given by a random word generator. I used a random word generator and kept going until I found a word I liked. London Calling!

My favorite prompt
#50 a book published in 2020: An Extravagant Death

My least favorite prompt
#11 a book to celebrate the Grand Egyptian Museum: probably because I had a hard time finding a book to fit and I didn't really like the book I picked. Borrower of the Night

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
#47 a nonfiction book other than a biography: led me to one of my 5star ratings! Five Equations That Changed the World

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
I'm stretching this one a bit. I would have read this book eventually in order to finish out the Narnia series, but it was oh so disappointing: The Last Battle

message 59: by Nina (new)

Nina (ninakins) | 334 comments Finished on 10/17

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge:
The Odyssey
The Autobiography of Malcolm X
The Library at Mount Char
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
Middlemarch by George Eliot

My most creative twist on a prompt:
For “book with a Muslim character or author” I used Rememberings by Sinead O’Connor after I found out that she converted to Islam in 2018. Not super creative, but I’m guessing there aren’t too many people who know she’s a Muslim now. I also read The Autobiography of Malcolm X, but I used that for a different prompt.

The prompts I cheated on:
I’ve been reading historical romance novels since elementary school. For me, a well-written historical romance is the very definition of a comfort read. Even the sub-par ones usually leave me with warm fuzzies, as an HEA (happily ever after) ending is a generally considered to be a requirement in the genre. A large percentage of the historical romances I read are set in Regency England. I’ve never been to England so most of the romances I read would qualify for three different prompts this year (love story, set somewhere you’ve never been, comfort reading). I used a different historical romance for each of these prompts, plus a few others. I feel no shame.

My favorite prompt:
A book that might cause someone to react “You read what?!?”
I chose Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?: And Other Questions About Dead Bodies by Caitlin Doughty. It was amusing.

My least favorite prompt:
A collection of short stories, essays, or poetry. I usually end up being disappointed with books like that, as was the case with the book I chose, The Green Man: Tales from the Mythic Forest.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!):
I absolutely adored Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, my choice for the “Warwick Prize for Women in Translation” prompt.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!):
Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism by Benedict Anderson, which I read for “book related to a word given by a random word generator”. My random word was nationalist. The author’s writing style annoyed me.

I was glad to see that we are already GR friends, Nina, because we have in common enjoying both serious classics and Regency romance. Also Drive Your Plow is the book I wouldn't have read but was glad I did.

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Rule of Wolves
Blood Heir
People We Meet on Vacation

When Sorrows Come
The Deal of a Lifetime and Other Stories
Inside Out & Back Again
Apple: Skin to the Core
The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic
Wild Sign
A Very Punchable Face

Rule of Wolves (King of Scars, #2) by Leigh Bardugo Blood Heir (Aurelia Ryder, #1) by Ilona Andrews People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry Generations (Firefly #4) by Tim Lebbon This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo When Sorrows Come (October Daye, #15) by Seanan McGuire The Deal of a Lifetime and Other Stories by Fredrik Backman Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai Apple Skin to the Core by Eric Gansworth The Language of Thorns Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic (Grishaverse, #0.5, 2.5, 2.6) by Leigh Bardugo Wild Sign (Alpha & Omega, #6) by Patricia Briggs A Very Punchable Face by Colin Jost Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows, #2) by Leigh Bardugo Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec

My most creative twist on a prompt
I did a pirate theme for the Past/Present/Future prompt.

The prompt I cheated on
I didn't really cheat, but I didn't have a page minimum so I used several short graphic novels.

My favorite prompt
A book that might cause someone to react “You read what?!?”
I just had fun with this one. I ended up reading The Demon in the Freezer - Reading a book about Smallpox while in the midst of a Covid lockdown definitely qualified I'd say.

My least favorite prompt
A book from the Are You Well Read in World Literature list.
I don't like list prompts. Even though this was a nice long and varied list, I still found it a pain.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
The Witch's Heart
I had added it to my list as a maybe, but then the spring challenge meant I needed an author who's initials were in the word EGGS. And this turned out to be one of my top reads of the year.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Convenience Store Woman
I had picked out a different book for the Warwick prize prompt, but then people kept talking Convenience Store Woman and so I thought I'd check it out. I hated it, but at least it was short.

My most creative twist on a prompt or The prompt I cheated on
A book related to a word given a random word generator I had words recording, Green, compete, harmony, represent, it was hard to find books with these words.

My favorite prompt
A book set in made up place.

My least favorite prompt
A book that might cause someone to react “You read what?!?”

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
There are a couple I could name for this one ..
Black Buck Mateo Askaripour
The Dating Plan Sara Desai

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
There aren't any that I think were a waste of time but a couple I gave 2 star to were
The Jetsetters Amanda Eyre Ward
The Book of Two Ways Jodi Picoult
A Tale for the Time Being Ruth Ozeki

Bec | 1337 comments Yay....I finished on my way to work this morning on the train.

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge.
Layla
Between the Raindrops
The Unexplainable Fairy Godmother
The Cousins
The Chain
The 57 Bus: A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime That Changed Their Lives

- My most creative twist on a prompt
I'm not creative at all so no creative twists for me.

- The prompt I cheated on
27. A book with a character who can be found in a deck of cards
I chose a book who had an angel of death as there is a death card in tarot. Not quite right but....

- My favorite prompt
I had lots of favourites.

- My least favorite prompt
45. A book related to a codeword from the NATO Phonetic Alphabet

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
The 57 Bus: A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime That Changed Their Lives
Non-fiction, blegh I really dislike it...well so I thought. This one was a 5 star read for me. I was really fascinated.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
F*ck Your Diet: And Other Things My Thighs Tell Me
I read this for short stories, essays, or poetry. Not my thing.

Tsipi Erann | 138 comments 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
So far (yes, this is completion, but I will switch out if needed):
* Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson
* The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yōko Ogawa
* The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison
* Black Wave by Michelle Tea
* Borderline by Mishell Baker
* Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata
* Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips
* We Were Witches by Ariel Gore
* The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo
* A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine
* When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo

My most creative twist on a prompt / cheated

Creative and cheated are different how? ;)

My two "iffiest" prompts were Egyptian Museum (I used The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty for this, because the MC originates there, but I don't know that it relates in any real way to the museum.

I also had a problem with finding a travel theme - so I selected a book (in Hebrew) called "The Last Passenger", which is travel-related and to me is close enough, but the story isn't really about traveling per se.

My favorite prompt
A book from the Are You Well Read in World Literature list -- because THAT sent me down an incredible rabbit hole of searching out books to read from around the world.

My least favorite prompt
Egyptian Museum and travel theme because I had to waffle a bit for them.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) - and - A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)

I read so many books this year (heading for over 200 by year's end) that I didn't actually select any books for the challenge, but rather enjoyed sorting them and matching them to the prompts.

That said, I really did get many ideas of what to read next from the discussions, and of those:

My favorite: The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson
My least favorite: The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

message 65: by Kathryn (last edited Oct 25, 2021 09:00AM) (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments I finished! Filling my last prompt (A collection of short stories, essays, or poetry) took over a month but I made it.

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge: Clean Sweep, The Fifth Season, Beach Read, Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, Never Let Me Go

- The prompt I cheated on: I still don’t quite understand what a monochromatic cover is (there were a lot of things on the list that I didn’t think were monochromatic) so I’m not sure?
The Opposite of You (Opposites Attract, #1) by Rachel Higginson

- My favorite prompt: I liked the prompts that forced me to read outside my normal bubble but were not too limiting such as the Muslim character or author, 100 black novelists

- My least favorite prompt: A collection of short stories, poetry or essays. I even think that I even voted for this one. But I kept trying to find something and was continually unsuccessful. I finally broke down and bought Thirteen Stories by Eudora Welty (an author I had only heard of but didn’t know anything about) at a used book store. Having the hard copy of the book and forcing myself to read one story a day was the only way I managed this.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!): The Fifth Season was so good! Also, Never Let Me Go (I was near the end of the challenge and needed a negative in the title). Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup kept my husband and I completely engaged on a long car trip; I only found out about it while looking for something with a female villain.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) On the Road. I love to travel but was not really into the travel prompt. This book was one of two one star books that I read this year. The other was Ready Player Two which my husband and I listened to because we had read the first book a few years ago, not due to the challenge.

Jill | 725 comments I think this might be the earliest I have ever finished the challenge.

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Girl with the Louding Voice
With the Fire on High
Dear Justyce
People We Meet on Vacation
Transcendent Kingdom

- My most creative twist on a prompt: I don’t know if it was particularly creative but both the book for the first prompt, Women & Children First, and my book for the last prompt, The Last Cruise, take place on a passenger ship.

- The prompt I cheated on: No cheating this time. 😊

- My favorite prompt: A book that might cause someone to react “You read what?!?”

- My least favorite prompt: I pretty much liked all the prompts this year.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!): The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin which I read for my favorite prompt. This book is so outside my normal reading “box” it isn’t funny but I really enjoyed this book and am thinking I need to read some more N.K. Jemisin.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!): I didn’t really hate any of the books I read for the challenge but I was really disappointed in The Best of Adam Sharp.

Now off to finish my other 5 challenges and start planning for 2022!

message 67: by Amy (new)

Amy (amybraswell) | 25 comments This is the first time I've attempted a reading challenge... and I finished!! I was trying to finish a bit early, since (as a handmade shop owner), this is my busy season. Whew!

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
An Ember in the Ashes
You Can't Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain
The Push
I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer
Daisy Jones & The Six
The Glass Hotel
Mexican Gothic
And I think there's more - it was a GOOD reading year!

- My most creative twist on a prompt - I guess the "comfort reading" one. I used The Institute by Stephen King. Odd, but he is comfort reading for me!

- The prompt I cheated on - I only sorta, kinda cheated with using Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly for "A book with a building in the title". I mean, a kitchen is in a building, right? :)

- My favorite prompt - I loved so many of them. I'll say "A short book (<210 pages) by a new-to-you author" because that is out of my wheelhouse. I usually go for LONG books, so this got me out of my comfort zone. And I read Binti, which I really enjoyed!

- My least favorite prompt - I loved them all, honestly. So maybe the "A book to celebrate The Grand Egyptian Museum" one, just because I didn't like the book I picked.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) - There are several!
Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything
Binti
Things We Lost in the Fire
An American Marriage

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) - for the "A book to celebrate The Grand Egyptian Museum" prompt, I read The Egyptologist. Skip it. Trust me.

You guys will definitely see me in 2022. Really enjoyed my first reading challenge!

I have finished my 2nd time through this year. I found it seemed like more of an obligation this time. I think for next year if I finish the regular challenge early, I will do something else, like a reject challenge.

5 Star books I read
(I give out very few 5's, maybe 2 or 3 out of 50 books!) I only seem to have had one in this category -
Project Hail Mary

Strong 4 Star books
The Heroine with 1001 Faces
Writers & Lovers
Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All
Miss Benson's Beetle

My most creative twist on a prompt
The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club for the NATO alphabet prompt. A plot point in the mystery is that it takes place in November and November is the NATO alphabet word for N

The prompt I cheated on
A book to celebrate the Grand Egyptian Museum - I just had nothing relating to Egypt or even museums, so I went with "grand" which can be used for 1000 - and counted The Heroine with 1001 Faces.

My favorite prompt
I liked the Past/Present/Future prompts since I love time travel stories

My least favorite prompt
The Grand Egyptian Museum, since I had so much trouble coming up with something

A book I might not have read if it weren't for the ATY challenge (but I'm so glad I did!)
Writers & Lovers

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY challenge (and wish I hadn't!)
Désorientale for A book eligible for the Warwick Prize for women in translation - It wasn't terrible, but it just never really grabbed me and was somewhat confusing.

- My most creative twist on a prompt
I don't think I did any creative twists

My random word was anger and I ended up reading These Violent Delights. There is anger in the book but I still feel like I cheated because anger is not in the title haha

A book written by an author of one of your best reads of 2020

Project Hail Mary is probably 1a or 2 as my favorite book of the year. (I loved When These Mountains Burn but P.H.M. is so close behind it so it could be 1 and 1a). I actually read it while in the hospital for the birth of my daughter; it was such a great distraction! I loved The Martian, but I think I like Project Hail Mary more in the end.

Made it! With over a month to spare. The full list is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you're interested, feel free to answer these questions and let us know what you loved and didn't love about the challenge!

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge

I've read quite a few 5*s this year - more than normal.

Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race
The Galaxy, and the Ground Within
Atlas Alone
What Abigail Did That Summer
Chernobyl Prayer: A Chronicle of the [book:Rewild Yourself: 23 Spellbinding Ways To Make Nature More VisibleFuture|29675406]
The Relentless Moon
No One Noticed the Cat
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
The Vanished Birds

- My most creative twist on a prompt

Maybe 34. A book with a travel theme - I went with a trip to Mars.

- The prompt I cheated on

I'd like to think I didn't, but you can judge for yourselves on my book by book comments!

- My favorite prompt

There were a lot of good prompts this year, so its hard to choose a favourite.

- My least favorite prompt

12. A book eligible for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation - it was tricky to find one I was interested in, although I was pleased with the one I did..

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)

Chernobyl Prayer: A Chronicle of the Future
Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race
Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)

The Darkness
Killer Characters

Okay, technically I probably would have read them without the ATY, but still. These were my 1* reads, and both for the same reason - a completely gratuitous character death right at the end. I don't mind character deaths when they advance the overall plot, but if they're just tacked on as an afterthought in the last two chapters, it makes me cross.

Carole said: "Robin, I am loving Project Hail Mary! I was laughing so hard last night I was crying. I want more from Andy Weir!"

I loved it as well - just read it for a different challenge.

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments Wasn’t sure I’d make it, but ended with a month to spare!

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Was very generous with my 5 stars this year
The Panda's Thumb: More Reflections in Natural History
Salt Houses
Mexican Gothic
Lovecraft Country
One Last Stop
My Sister, the Serial Killer
You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism
The Flamingo's Smile: Reflections in Natural History
The Henna Artist
Becoming
Homegoing

The ones that really stuck in my mind after reading were Lovecraft Country and Homegoing

- My most creative twist on a prompt
All Systems Red - a science fiction novella that qualified as a mystery

- The prompt I cheated on
The closest to cheating were the 4 rereads of old favorites. They were the right books for me to read at the time, though.

- My favorite prompt
A nonfiction book other than biography, autobiography, or memoir.

- My least favorite prompt
I put off the Are You Well Read in World Literature until the end. List prompts are not my favorit. I loved the book I read for it, though Homegoing).

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead for a book eligible for the Warwick Prize for Wmen in Translation. Would probably have never picked this up without this prompt and the comments from group members

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Would probably have DNF’d Deadly Ashes if it weren’t for the challenge (ended up the only 2-star on my list).

ladymurmur | 541 comments I finished! For a while there, my progress on this challenge had stalled, and I thought I might not finish this year. But after taking a challenge break and just reading for the pure pleasure of it for a while, my remaining challenge picks became interesting once more.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune

Maresi (The Red Abbey Chronicles #1) by Maria Turtschaninoff Maresi by Maria Turtschaninoff

And now to start planning for the 2022 challenge - my reward for finishing this year. :-)

Deborah | 348 comments Yeah! I finished the last book for my challenge this morning! Here is my summary:

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Hiding Place: The Triumphant True Story of Corrie Ten Boom
Eragon
Robin and Marian
Beatrice and Benedick
Come a Stranger
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Peasant's Dream
Prince Caspian
Many Waters
Here and Now and Then
Before We Were Yours
Piecing Me Together
A Midwinter's Wedding: A Retelling of The Frog Prince
Enchantment
Dicey's Song
Way to Be!: 9 Ways To Be Happy And Make Something Of Your Life
Heidi
Passage to Zarahemla
Court of Swans
The Horse and His Boy
Divergent

My most creative twist on a prompt
I think I was most creative in filling the Sound of Music Prompt (#3). I decided to use The Hiding Place: The Triumphant True Story of Corrie Ten Boom because the book is about keeping a positive outlook in the direst of circumstances. This relates to the song because the song’s main focus is thinking happy thoughts when you are upset.

The prompt I cheated on
I don't feel I cheated on any of them.

My favorite prompt
My favorite prompt was #7: A Book That Fits a Prompt Suggestion that Didn't make the final List, because it allowed me to pick a book related to Shakespeare. I chose Beatrice and Benedick for this prompt and loved it!

My least favorite prompt
#12: A Book eligible for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation. I had a really hard time finding a book that appealed to me for this prompt. The book I chose (White Horse) ended up being my least favorite of the challenge.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and am glad I did!)

Misty | 1485 comments It's been a helluva year, but reading has been my escape and solace. I started the challenge in February, so I am feeling really good about finished in ten months. :) I really enjoyed this challenge. I have already started planning next year.

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge

I had more five star books this year than I have ever had in a year! These are the ones I read for this challenge:

Going to Meet the Man by James Baldwin
Reconstruction and the Rise of Jim Crow: 1864-1896 by Christopher Collier
Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart by James R. Doty
Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again by Rachel Held Evans
The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna
The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King
The Waste Lands by Stephen King
If It Bleeds by Stephen King
Wolves of the Calla by Stephen King
Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches by Audre Lorde
Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas
House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas
Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas
Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas
Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas
Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery
The Beauty of Your Face by Sahar Mustafah
Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell
Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear

These are the ones I read that weren't for the challenge:
Finders Keepers by Stephen King
End of Watch by Stephen King
The Outsider by Stephen King
Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King
Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

- My most creative twist on a prompt

Honestly - none. I am not creative with the prompts. They are all quite straight forward. Maybe I'll try to be less boring next year. LOL.

- The prompt I cheated on

The only one I kind of cheated on was - A book that might cause someone to react “You read what?!?” I have a book that is horrible (subject matter) that I do want to read for research, and I was going to use it for this prompt. I have had a horribly sad year, and I just couldn't make myself do it. I picked And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks by Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs for the prompt. It definitely feels like a cheat though.

- My favorite prompt

12 - A book eligible for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation because I found Betrayal by Lilja Sigurðardóttir.

- My least favorite prompt

There weren't really any. I enjoyed looking for books that fit each prompt.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)

Besides Betrayal, I would never have read Red November: Inside the Secret U.S.-Soviet Submarine War by W. Craig Reed. It was a very interesting book with some fascinating history.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)

Never Never by Brianna R. Shrum - it was just boring.

message 85: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Just finished today and am looking forward to a month of free reading.

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge:
Black Water Sister by Zen Cho
House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland
Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo
Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers
The Library of the Dead by T.L. Huchu

My most creative twist on a prompt:
I read The Red Monarch for a character found in a deck of cards, since there are four red monarchs in a standard deck (king and queen of diamonds and hearts).

The prompt I cheated on:
For a book with a travel theme I had intended to read a piece of travel writing but I ended up going with space travel and Far from the Light of Heaven.

My favorite prompt:
A book posted in one of the ATY Best Book of the Month threads

My least favorite prompt:
A book from the Are You Well Read in World Literature list

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!):
House of Hollow was a random cheap kindle purchase that I used for a building in the title and it was so surprisingly dark and I LOVED it.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!):
This Coven Won't Break which I read for a negative in the title. This was a disappointing sequel to a book I enjoyed (so I might have read it anyway but this prompt definitely made me finish it).

message 86: by Janell (last edited Dec 01, 2021 06:04PM) (new)

Janell | 57 comments I completed this a couple of weeks ago, but haven't posted yet.
- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Henna Wars by Adiba Jaigirdar, A Deadly Inside Scoop by Abby Collette, Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny, An Irish Country Welcome by Patrick Taylor, Four Funerals and Maybe a Wedding by Rhys Bowen, The Great Unexpected by Dan Mooney, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson, The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner

- My most creative twist on a prompt
Past / present / future - I read The Dalemark Quartet by Diana Wynne Jones, which take place in past/present/future relative to the first book in the series - in a fantasy setting.

- The prompt I cheated on
I don't think I cheated ... although my book for #38 (My Parents: An Introduction / This Does Not Belong to You) for the word "Introduction" has only been published as part of 2 books back to back - you flip the book over to read the other one - and I just read the one I needed and didn't finish the flipside.

- My favorite prompt
A book to celebrate The Grand Egyptian Museum - a great thing to commemorate!
- My least favorite prompt
A book related to the lyrics for the song "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music -- I thought I'd love this prompt, but it ended up giving me fits.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) The Widows of Malabar Hill (my parents are reading it now, too).
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) The Nakano Thrift Shop

message 87: by Elspeth (new)

Elspeth (elspethm) | 18 comments - 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Birthday
Devil's Daughter

- My most creative twist on a prompt
I didn't really have to be that creative, I read a lot of books this year :)

- The prompt I cheated on
"made up place" -
I don't generally read books that take place in made up places and I'm not sure if this book even counted, but I read The Midnight Library. She was in the "real world" but also in the "midnight library so I guess it wasn't much of a stretch

- My favorite prompt
"A Love Story" - I read over 50 romance novels this year, and counting :)

- My least favorite prompt
anything that has to do with book prizes. Generally I don't like the books that are award winning, for whatever reason. I read Tokyo Ueno Station for the Warwick prize prompt, and it was okay, but the award winning prompts are too limiting for me.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
" A book posted in one of the ATY Best Book of the Month threads" - I read Tweet Cute and thought it was a fun cute story.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
I don't generally read books that take place in made up places and I'm not sure if this book even counted, but I read The Midnight Library and didn't enjoy it. The story is based on suicide, and the main character had an easy way to immerse herself in the many realms she tried out rather than in other "time travel" stories so it seemed a bit "easy" for her to fit in in these other places. Overall it's not a book I would have read if it weren't for a reading challenge.

Graceann (silentsgirl) | 2 comments This is the first year I finished the challenge before 11:55pm on December 31! I really enjoyed the prompts this year, and look forward to 2022's broadening of my reading horizons.

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge

Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler
Needful Things, by Stephen King
Echo, by Pam Munoz Ryan

- My most creative twist on a prompt
My Monticello, by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson - it's about a descendant of Thomas Jefferson hiding from a mob of white supremacists at the home of her ancestor. I used it for Future, because it's a terrifyingly possible scenario for ours.

- The prompt I cheated on
I didn't.

- My favorite prompt
About a person without naming them. I chose The Beauty of Your Face, by Sahar Mustafah, and I loved the book

- My least favorite prompt
A book related to "the end." I had trouble getting around my own block on how vague that was.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
The Beauty of Your Face - it was not on my radar, and it was such a wonderful discovery

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
N/A - everything I read had some value, and there wasn't anything I hated.

message 89: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments I'm done!

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover (A book by an author whose name doesn't contain the letters A, T or Y)
Magic Triumphs by Ilona Andrews (A book written by an author of one of your best reads of 2020)
So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo (A book about racism or race relations)
Beartown by Fredrik Backman (A book from the Are You Well Read in Literature list)
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (A book related to a codeword from the NATO phonetic alphabet)
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers (A book with an ensemble cast)
The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang (A book related to "the end")

- My most creative twist on a prompt
A book related to the lyrics for the song "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music - I read What a Difference a Duke Makes because it had a "girl" in a white dress on the cover.

- The prompt I cheated on
I really wanted to read Project Hail Mary so I read it looking for somewhere it would fit for "A book related to a codeword from the NATO phonetic alphabet" and the best I could come up with was KILO because the main character was an American scientist and was always thinking about measurements in metric and imperial measurements.

- My favorite prompt
A book posted in one of the ATY Best Book of the Month threads - I thought I wouldn't like this one because I don't go in the threads but using the listopia made it very easy and there were SO MANY books I wanted to read.

- My least favorite prompt
A book that fits a prompt suggestion that didn't make the final list - I always dislike this one because it's too difficult to narrow down and I always just pick a book and then find a prompt it fits.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
A book eligible for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation - I read Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 which I had never heard of before this prompt.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
A book set in a country on or below the Tropic of Cancer - I had War Girls on my tbr already so I would have read it eventually, but I probably would have DNF'd it if it weren't for this challenge

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments WooHoo! ✅Completed Round one. ✅Completed Round two. ✅Completed 39 Prompts that didn't make the list.

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge = Many 4.5 and 5 star books this year! Here are some of my favorites:
Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
Euphoria by Lily King
A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk
Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley
The Sympathizer by VIet Thanh Nguyen
The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
What the Wind Knows by Amy Harmon
His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
Home by Marilynne Robinson
Bewilderment by Richard Powers

- My most creative twist on a prompt – Sound of Music, My favorite things – For round one I read a Dalai Llama book that has a similar message to the song (rather than just key words from the lyrics.) I was most pleased with my China and Man v nature themes for the past, present, future prompts.

- The prompt I cheated on – In Round One I didn't cheat at all. In Round two I stretched the definition for the prompt on the Egyptian museum. I read a book from a different part of Africa, but it did mention Egypt in the book.

- My favorite prompt - # 31. A book by an author whose career spanned more than 21 years. I discovered many excellent authors this way. 26 of my books could have fit this prompt! I also liked the racism tag, islands, below tropic of cancer, and a prompt that didn't make the final list (38 hits!). I also liked the Warwick Prize and world literature prompts because they helped me to find books for my Global challenge this year.

-My least favorite prompt – 11. A book to celebrate The Grand Egyptian Museum. It felt impossible to find a book that truly “celebrates” the museum without reading a book written only for that purpose.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) - Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk – For A book eligible for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) Hmm. none really. I regretted a couple of my YA readathon selections though.

Kat | 565 comments Just finished my second round. I agree it wasn’t as enjoyable as the first time. I think I am going to try more challenges next year and maybe some rejects.

5 star reads
I didn’t have any but these came close
Anxious People
Such a Fun Age
In the Dream House
March: Book One

Most creative interpretation
I wasn't as adventurous the second time around. For country never visited I used USA and for island I used Ireland. I also used Agatha Christie for 21 year career both times.

My favourite prompt
I really can't narrow it down most of them are amazing.

My least favourite prompt
I read a lot of non-fiction anyway so that prompt felt like a freebie.

A book I might not have read but I'm glad I did
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead
A Burning

A book I might not have read and wish I hadn't
I had quite a few disappointments this time around. Mainly books that have been massively hyped that I found underwhelming.
Girl, Woman, Other

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge:
The Four Winds
West with Giraffes
Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death
Scythe
The Guncle
The House in the Cerulean Sea
Anxious People

My most creative twist on a prompt:
A collection of short stories, poetries, or essays - In Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, while it's technically not a book full of short stories, the women write stories which are included in this book

The prompt I cheated on:
A book eligible for the Warwick Prize - The Travelling Cat Chronicles: It is a translated book but I don't think eligible for the prize

My favorite prompt:
I liked most of the prompts, so I didn't really have a favorite, although it was fun to find one for the "You read what?" prompt

My least favorite prompt:
A cross genre novel

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!):

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge - I had a few, but The House in the Cerulean Sea, The Four Winds, The Heart's Invisible Furies and The Lincoln Highway are the most memorable

- My most creative twist on a prompt - Using Bon Temps, LA for a made up place - Sookie Stackhouse series

- The prompt I cheated on - The random word generator - I used the second word it gave me - research

- My favorite prompt - #49 - A book with an ensemble cast - I read Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

- My least favorite prompt - Any of the prompts that required a book that won some type of award.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough

I finished the last book today! I was holding out on that last prompt almost until the last minute, but I did it!

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
There were so many great books this year! These were my 5 stars:
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
The Scent Keeper by Erica Bauermeister
Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah
The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse
Attachments by Rainbow Rowell
The Light in Hidden Places by Sharon Cameron
Swing Time by Zadie Smith

- My most creative twist on a prompt
I used The Light in Hidden Places for the prompt relating to the NATO phonetic alphabet because there were a lot of Gestapo wearing "uniforms" in that book

- The prompt I cheated on
Some might call it a stretch to read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for "My Favorite Things" song - but I picked it because Harry Potter is one of my favorite things!

- My favorite prompt
Prompt 13 - I love having free reign to pick a book by an author I enjoyed reading!

- My least favorite prompt
Prompts that have to do with prompts that didn't make the final list or ones that involve me having to go back an look at old threads

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
I read Swing Time which was one of my favorite books I had read in a long long time, and I probably wouldn't have picked it up if I weren't trying to pick a book for prompt 5.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
The Secrets We Kept - I picked this one because I was trying to read all of the Reese picks and because it filled prompt #18 (past) - I just don't love historical fiction.

So excited for next year!! This will be my 5th time attempting the challenge!

message 98: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (grapefruit) | 57 comments Finished just in time on December 9!

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Cinder series
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Purple Hibiscus
The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives
The House in the Cerulean Sea

My most creative twist on a prompt
I really enjoy taking prompts very literally and find obvious connections, so I have nothing to report here.

The prompt I cheated on
I definitely felt I cheated on prompt #26 A short book (<210 pages) by a new-to-you author for which I read The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories by Tim Burton. While I had never read anything by Tim Burton, I am way too familiar - and fond - of his movies for him to count as "new to me".

My favorite prompt
The prompt 3. A book related to the lyrics for the song "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music was just so creative and beautiful, with many options :)

My least favorite prompt
While I enjoyed the book I read for it, the prompt 30. A long book seemed random and a bit boring to me.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Today Tonight Tomorrow chosen for the prompt 19. 3 books related to "Past, Present, Future" - Book 2 PRESENT was a surprisingly good YA-novel!

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
I kept the holiday prompt until the end, hoping to read something nice and cozy during Christmas time, but struggled to decide on a book near the end. I finally chose In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren on a whim and - although I finished it - did not enjoy it that much. Family members as romantic rivals and marriage proposals after 6 months of dating - just no.

Melissa A | 22 comments I FINISHED! 12/02/21

I started on October 25, 2020 when the list was released. I had long since finished 2020’s ATY52 and PopSugar Challenges. I overlapped books for those. For 2021, I will use different titles for ATY52 and PopSugar.
However, I decided to restart on January 1st - so, I read a second book for the prompts I completed before 1 January 2021.

Challenge complete, yay!

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Anxious People
Magic Lessons
Big Pharma, Dirty Lies, Busy Bees and Eco Activists: 20 Environmental Stories from South Africa
The Honey Bus: A Memoir of Loss, Courage and a Girl Saved by Bees
The Time Keeper
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine
The Nickel Boys
The Whale at the End of the World
The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot
Billy Summers
Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel

My most creative twist on a prompt
For the Past, Present, Future 3-book prompt I used Slowly Slowly: The Old Way To Everest Base Camp for the Future part even though it's not set in the future, but because it's something I'd like to do in the Future

The prompt I cheated on
None, but I did use my Wild Card for prompt 12

My favorite prompt
The travel theme prompt

My least favorite prompt
Collection of short stories/essays/poetry

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Passing

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
There were several I would have DNF'd if it weren't for the challenge, but The House Between Tides stands out

All in all, a good challenge reading year, looking forward to 2022's challenge :)
