Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
Wheelathon 5
>
Team Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

About this Challenge
◈ Starts on 12 June and runs for 10 weeks (ending 21 August)
◈ The team with the highest points at the end of the game wins!
◈ Each fortnight the mods will “spin the wheel" and assign each team a word
◈ The team's task is to read books to spell out the word, gaining points per letter tiered by the book length (see below)
◈ The team will get an extra 15 completion points if all the letters in the word are part of their spell-it-out
◈ Once teams have read their word for the week they can "re-read" the word to gain more letter points, but no additional completion points.
◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count
◈ Books must be at least 160 pages in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scripts/plays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified (by arbookfinder.com or arbookfinder.co.uk) as at least 40,000 words or have an audio edition that is at least 5 hours long
◈ Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous rounds to use later in the challenge
◈ Rereads are permitted provided it has been at least 6 months since you last read/listened to the book
Point System
◈ Books less than 160 pages = 0 points
◈ Books between 160 and 1000 pages = 0.1 points/page
◈ Books over 1000 pages = 100 points
(points will be rounded up/down from 0.5 as per standard maths)
Tags
◈ Each colour segment on the wheel has been paired with a selection of genre tags.
◈ If you read and use a book with a matching genre, you will gain 5 bonus points per book, for a maximum of 10 books / 50 points.
◈ Genres must match exactly (though plural/singular is OK).
◈ There is no minimum number of tags required.
◈ Books must be used in the spell out to qualify for Tag points.
◈ for reasons the sheets show these points as "Top Shelf bonus" points
Task Lists
◈ The challenge comes with a task list
◈ If you read and use a book for a task you will gain 5 bonus points per book
◈ Each player in a team has their own task list (i.e. task #1 can be completed by each member in the team)
◈ Each book can only be used once - one book per task, one task per book
How a "spell it out" works
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word. If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used. We're also allowing for Translators names, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version.

There's a quicker way to look up if a you want to know if a book you want to read it 'tagged' on a certain shelf. Here's a quickie pic, though.
Using Claimed by Elle Kennedy for the example, found here on Dystopian Romance.

Once we are underway, do please head on down to the buffet cart, where refreshments will be provided by our excellent waiter.

During our journey I will, in my self-appointed capacity as tour guide, at various intervals point out the the more interesting sights along the way.
To start us off, I'd like to direct your attention to the platform, where the porter is busy loading our luggage...

(If anyone is uncomfortable with being shown the sights, or would like to be notified when we're passing specific points of scenic interest I may have overlooked, please don't hesitate to let me know!)
Again, welcome aboard, we hope you will enjoy your journey!

Hi, my name is Sonia, and I'm from Lisbon, Portugal.
I'm a software tester, and thanks to the current situation, I'm currently doing remote work. Which I thought it would be a pain, but no, I've discovered that I actually like it.
I still miss the banter with my team and the coffee breaks, but, better safe than sorry,
Anyway, 2020, has been a bit hard, and I have been on a reading slump, but wheelathon being my favorite of NBRC's team challenges always changes that, soooo, I have great expectations.
More things to say... I guess I'm a veteran on team challenges, and right now, one of my favorite things to do is to grab my colouring pencils, and colouring a book whilst listening to an audiobook. Immediate zen state!
Lots of names that I haven't been on a team with, so, I'm looking forward to play with you all!
Happy readings!

I know soooooo many of you and have played a lot of these team challenges with many of you and I'm super stoked to meet all the new mates. THIS IS GOING TO BE FUUUUUN! :D
*breathes heavily*
Okay. I'll need to calm down!
*sees the Chris'*
*squeals*
*hyperventilates*

I'm Sammy, and I live in Leeds, Yorkshire, where I ended up after being born in Scotland and making a detour via the Netherlands (and Scotland again). Then I met my husband (who was sat on the floor in the pub with the pages of his manuscript all around him - we got talking about books and are still doing so 21 years later!) and I've been in Leeds, his hometown, ever since.
During lockdown I've been mostly listening to audio books, because I need quiet to read print, and with two guitarists in the house full-time, and a third just moving back in, quiet is a mythical beast I haven't encountered yet this year!
I've been playing NBRC team challenges for about a year and a half now, and this is my second turn as a co-captain. The first was last year's Seven Deadly Sins Tower Teams, where being on team Lust (along with Sonia!), I thought it appropriate to post daily pictures of hunky men to motivate us.
Of course, you do something once and it becomes expected, lol. (Such a hardship you know...)
I'll read pretty much anything, but not a big fan of YA or romance. I still read them anyway from time to time, because you never know if you're going to hit on the book that'll convert you ;)
Looking forward to roadtripping with you all!

There are some people here I have played with before on team challenges. Glad to see you again! Really looking forward to starting. This will probably be the week we get the most prep time, so I took some of that and pulled together a few titles that would work for X. I don't seem to have a problem with any other letter.
About me: I am a retired university librarian and have been a book person my whole life. I have a huge print and kindle collection and so am prepared for anything. I love team challenges and hunting for the books for a task. I read in most genres and find I read faster during challenges. I am slower when it comes to non-fiction since there is more to absorb. I am not a fan of vampires but do read books with vampires in them, just don't find them hero material. I do like a touch of romance in my reading.
I live in upstate New York on Lake Ontario. I am married and have a daughter and grandson. They are readers as well. In fact, my grandson, 9, is into cartooning and says he is going to be an author and illustrator.
Looking forward to some strategizing.

I am so excited to play! This game looks super fun and our team has so many familiar names. I have played with many of you but not for a few years. For those of you who remember me from other team challenges a few years back, my reading speed has decreased significantly. I went from reading a book every day or two to reading one or two every week, sometimes less.
I am from Northern Ontario (Canada) and spend my days with a 2 year old (3 in September). Aside from reading and playing with my little guy, I enjoy sewing.
I will read pretty much anything but I am not a huge fan of mystery or crime. But will read them if nothing else fits. My favourite genres are science fiction and fantasy.

lol!"
And you guys won! :( My team was next to last..lol

While my first true love in reading is Non-Fiction History I hardly ever get to read it anymore. with 3 jobs I have had to learn to switch to reading almost exclusively via audiobooks and I can't do NF History that way. And they don't work well for challenges.
So instead I fill my time mostly reading cozy mysteries because they are truly the best for filling tasks it seems. I am not a big romance fan, but since I have audible escape I use those for challenges as well.
Otherwise I read a lot of Historical Fiction, but it can be dangerous because I tend to critic it against actual history. So unless it is clearly a rewriting/alternate history or a fantasy take I can be less then thrilled with the story if they take too many liberties.

I live with my better half, and two dogs. I read a little bit of everything, but I really love Fantasy and YA. Historical Fiction was my original love, so I don't read it as much anymore.

Yes, so many familiar names!! Very happy to play together again and super excited to meet new teammates!
I'm Elena, live in Maryland, East Coast US, with my husband and our dogs and cats. We just adopted a new dog two days ago, he is adorable, but oh, what a handful! So that makes it two dogs and three cats total :)
I love sci fi and fantasy the most but dabble into most genres and would read anything for a challenge. I'm really liking the laid-back reading pace and a chance to enjoy other media post-UNO, but starting to miss the rush of a team challenge too and am really excited to get started :)

lol!"
And you guys won! :( My team was next to last..lol"
Yes, thanks to Carmen, Cathy and Ora, because I felt like the weak link the whole time. lol!

so I'm Rokk and I'm from Leeds, West Yorkshire. Before lockdown I was a reading volunteer, but that's on hold for now. I like reading science fiction and fantasy, and knitting. And here I am.

Haha... you and quite a few others, I'm sure! ;)
I may have... plans...

Wheelathon is fun! A lot less manic than some other challenges I can mention. Plus less call for reading awful books to fill tasks (unless you feel so inclined).

I enjoy coloring too but I use an app on my tablet. It's loaded with ads which takes away from the zen, but still very relaxing :)

I enjoy coloring too bu..."
Me three, though I mostly colour stamped images and then make cards out of them. I can happily be doing that for hours at a stretch with my headphones on drowning out all the noisy people in the house :)

As with most of you some familiar names, either from pervious challenges or from just seeing you around in random threads, and a few new ones.
I was thinking I had played Wheel-a-thon in the past, but having looked over the rules more thoroughly I am now questioning my recollection. Anyhow, having done lots of others I am sure this will becaume old hat very quickly.
As for me. I live in northern California, in what is commonly called the "Gold Country" or the foothills, because I am at just over 2000 ft on the way to the Sierra Nevada range. I and my parents have a house and we reside together for part of the year. They both spend time in Arizona. However with the current COVID situation my dad has stayed in Arizona and my mother is here, so it is a bit of a strange spring.
Looking forward to working with the team to come up with a strategy. Have been going thru books looking for at least medium leanght ones and harder or more needed letters. Need to also look at the other lists of stuff for extra points.
🤓

I love cross stitch though I haven't done any in ages. Hope you enjoy it, Sarah! My friends got me a diamond painting kit for my birthday (hasn't arrived yet), I'm looking forward to trying it for the first time!

lol!"
Hahahaha I was thinking about us kicking some vamp war a$$$ 😉 Glad we're together again *happy dance*

Hey Apoorv. Nice to see again.

I guess introduction is due by me. I see some familiar names. Hi again and nice to be together in another team challenge. I've been in many NBRC challenges. I like the crazy ones and the slower pace. Yes, I'm a challenge junkie and proud of it ☺ Plethora and I have been team buddies for quite some time and in many other groups. We've crazy together. LOl
I live in New York with the family and our dog. I enjoy all genres. I enjoy romance, mystery/suspense, and fantasy but I'll read anything, if needed and if it sounds good.
I'm excited to start but I guess we need to prep. I'll start by adding some info. Hahahaha

Hi Michelle. You go relax and come back to chat :D

I believe I saw that Sammy made a planning SS to use for easier transfer to the official SS. Sammy if you can add it here so we can all have a look at it and get some planning done maybe ;) Unless some of you are uncomfortable using the planning sheet and would like a Read Books Thread instead I can ask the Mods for that. Its up to you, let me know. I'm ok with both as well.

My daughter and her college roommate love these. They did one during the extended spring break. (They remained on campus.) My daughter has done a few, they can be time consuming.
