Judy | 4065 comments RULES

About this Challenge
◈ Starts on 12 June and runs for 10 weeks (ending 21 August)
◈ The team with the highest points at the end of the game wins!
◈ Each fortnight the mods will “spin the wheel" and assign each team a word
◈ The team's task is to read books to spell out the word, gaining points per letter tiered by the book length (see below)
◈ The team will get an extra 15 completion points if all the letters in the word are part of their spell-it-out
◈ Once teams have read their word for the week they can "re-read" the word to gain more letter points, but no additional completion points.
◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count
◈ Books must be at least 160 pages in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scripts/plays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified (by arbookfinder.com or arbookfinder.co.uk) as at least 40,000 words or have an audio edition that is at least 5 hours long
◈ Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous rounds to use later in the challenge
◈ Rereads are permitted provided it has been at least 6 months since you last read/listened to the book

Point System
◈ Books less than 160 pages = 0 points
◈ Books between 160 and 1000 pages = 0.1 points/page
◈ Books over 1000 pages = 100 points
(points will be rounded up/down from 0.5 as per standard maths)

Tags
◈ Each colour segment on the wheel has been paired with a selection of genre tags.
◈ If you read and use a book with a matching genre, you will gain 5 bonus points per book, for a maximum of 10 books / 50 points.
◈ Genres must match exactly (though plural/singular is OK).
◈ There is no minimum number of tags required.
◈ Books must be used in the spell out to qualify for Tag points.
◈ for reasons the sheets show these points as "Top Shelf bonus" points

Task Lists
◈ The challenge comes with a task list
◈ If you read and use a book for a task you will gain 5 bonus points per book
◈ Each player in a team has their own task list (i.e. task #1 can be completed by each member in the team)
◈ Each book can only be used once - one book per task, one task per book

BOM Points
Participating in Book of the Month (BOM) discussions during the time frame of the challenge will score points as follows:
◈ 40 points for writing a discussion question set
◈ 20 points for participating in the discussion

How a "spell it out" works
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word. If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used. We're also allowing for Translators names, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version.

Judy | 4065 comments Hi everyone!

First off, super excited to play with you all! I've played a few rounds of Tower Teams and Wheelathon but this is my first time being a captain.

Where is everyone from? How are you doing these days? What's the best book you've so far read in 2020?

I'm Judy, I'm 23 and from Munich, Germany. I'm currently working (in theory) while waiting for my Masters program to begin in September. My favorite book of the year is hands down Ayiti - I immediately handed it to my mom when I finished it and have thought about it every single day since.

Melindam | 8288 comments description

Hello and please ALL ABOARD THE ORIENT EXPRESS! :)

I am very excited to play/read with you.

This is my 2nd Wheelaton and also 2nd time as co-captain. I also participated in quite a few TTs as well.

I am Melinda from Hungary. I work in Budapest, though nowadays it's from home - 40 kms outside the city. I am missing my train commuting time quite badly, as this was when I had the most time to read and listen to audiobooks.
I can still read, but with my 6-year-old-son at home, it's more difficult to get undisturbed me-time.

My favourite books of the year are Wolf Hall & Bring Up the Bodies from Hiltary Mantel's Thomas Cromwell trilogy. Although I am not a great fan of historical fiction, these books are just magical.

For this challenge I can probably read less books than I would normally do, but I will choose ones with bigger page count to balance it. ;)

message 16: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments OH, and a question from me: Which fictional world or which book would you visit, if you had the chance?

message 17: by Ora (new)

Ora (oeamis) Hi everyone! This is my 3rd or 4th wheel. For the next couple of weeks things a little crazy for me. I am getting my floors replaced and busy doing a lot of painting. At least by the 15th the floors will be done and hopefully the majority of the painting will be completed. I am planning on checking in at least a couple of times a weeks before wheel starts and have a reminder in my calendar on June 13th. After the 15th, my schedule won't be as hectic.
Where is everyone from? I have lived in North Carolina for the past 20 years and love the South.
How are you doing these days? Busy with remodeling. My husband both teleworks and goes to the office during the week. Most of the time I am just working on my house. What's the best book you've so far read in 2020? latest one so far is Chasing Cassandra. I love Lisa Kleypas's books.
Which fictional world or which book would you visit, if you had the chance? This is a harder one for me, so I will go off of the first one that came to mind. Nalini singh's Psy-Changling world

message 18: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Hi everyone,
I think this is my third wheel.
I’m from North Carolina, the mountains.
This is my first week back at work after two months of working from home. I had been doing some of my own writing. Now that I’m back in the office I’ll have my commute for audiobooks. The best book I’ve read so far is The House on the Cerulean Sea.
If I’m a visitor and I don’t have to live there I’d be interested in visiting a fantasy world like in Red Sister, The Poppy War, or The Bear and the Nightingale. If I’m living there then someplace a lot safer, but I can’t think of what book that would be.

message 19: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments Hi Ora and Annalisa! Glad to have you here.

Although we have never been on the same Team before, we met at several TTs and also UNO challenges if I remember well.

The literary world I would visit, would be Terry Pratchett's Discworld. That would be so much fun. :)

message 20: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments Dear Team members, another request, as you introduce yourselves, please attach the link to your Wheelaton shelves. Thank you. :)

message 21: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments Hi Ora - good to see you again so soon! :)

Annalisa - I've heard incredible things about The House on the Cerulean Sea from so many people now, I really want to pick it up too!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello, this is my first Wheelathon! I'm from Canada and I work parttime at my University's Library but besides that, I have plenty of time to read. Actually, because my online work is kind of monotonous I listen to audiobooks during my shifts!

My favourite book this year was probably The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo or All the Light We Cannot See which are both completely outside my typical genre preferences (fantasy). And if I had to pick one literary world I'd probably be kind of basic and pick Hogwarts.

message 23: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments It's kind of a boring answer but I'm still waiting on my Hogwarts letter... a magic school would be the coolest thing ever!

I also usually get loads of audiobook time in when doing boring data stuff at work - it makes these mindnumbing tasks so much more bearable!

Hello and welcome to the Team. Please let us know if you are OK with us calling you QE or if there's another name you'd like to go by.

message 26: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2143 comments Hello, everyone! I'm also from North Carolina. Good to see neighbors here, Ora and Annalisa. I'm retired so I can read as much as I want as a rule. My favorite genres are mystery, fantasy, and historical fiction but I'll read just about anything. Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors so this team name is just about perfect for me.

I have played Wheel a couple of times before and am looking forward to playing with you all. I also am still waiting for that letter from Hogwarts.

I also love Agatha Christie and the Orient Express is one of my favourites.
I recently listened to the audiobook narrated by Dan Stevens and it was an awesome experience.

UND OB, Judy! :D Absolute madness. I was only occasional replacement player for quidditch, but it almost gave me a burnout, so I am staying clear of the quidditch game recently announced. :)

But I loved to be part of the TT as a whole.

Bookworm_gem (gembear) | 310 comments Hi everyone, I'm Gemma and in the UK. I think this is only my second Wheelathon and really looking forward to it. Currently working from home so also missing my reading time on the daily commute!

Favourite book so far this year has been the Testaments but also enjoyed Daisy Jones & the Six and The Institute.
@QE The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was my top book in 2019, it's amazing.

I think I'd have to go to middle earth and live with the Hobbits :)

I am from Europe, timezone EEST. This is my first wheel, but I have participated in TT 3 times according to my bookshelves. I was on Harry Potter TT too, but I don't remember which team. It's been a while :D
Aaaand I am on Quidditch team again , so I might be slightly mad during the weekends for a while ;D
I am still on leave from work (month 4, thank you covid), which is not all that bad since I get to read a lot :)

I was not a part of the HP TT but my house is Slytherin.

@Judy: I can't believe I avoided audiobooks for so long! They're my new favourite thing as I just started listening to them last month.

uh i'm from indiana so i'm on EST time and i guess i'm doing about as well as can be expected considering [waves hand around vaguely] everything. been having a lot of trouble reading this year but hopefully this will kick me into gear, i chose a low monthly goal at any rate.

um best books ...i did a reread of the monster of elendhaven which i absolutely adore and as for new books #veryfat #verybrave by nicole byer was absolutely hilarious so there are two WILDLY different recs for you lol

also i did do the hp tt and i was slytherin team draco!

message 43: by Colleen (last edited Jun 04, 2020 06:05PM) (new)

Colleen | 238 comments Hi - I'm Colleen from Lakeville, Minnesota, USA. I'm doing well amidst all the craziness (COVID, race riots, you know normal year 2020 stuff). I've been working from home full-time since March, so like others, I miss my audio book commute, but trying to listen in as much as possible while out walk/running, cleaning etc. Un/fortunately I don't have a job where I can listen in as I wouldn't be able to concentrate on what was going on (book or work tasks). But very glad I attempted to do audio again because now they've stuck with me the past few years. I can get through my TBR much more, however, it's still a lost cause. :)

I just added Ayiti to the list.

The best book so far this year I've read is The Dutch House but I have a few other really good ones I've enjoyed, mainly All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves and Three Junes.

Not sure what fictional book world I would live in. I don't think I've met it yet, which is exciting. But I would be part of Slytherin - not sure if it was TT but I was part of Draco Malfoy's group once - maybe Devann knows. This is my second Wheelathon. I really enjoy the Uno challenge as well - my team won this year, maybe we can do it here. But I've been really random so far this year so hopefully can read at least one book a week.

My shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Glad to meet you all and can't wait to start! I better finish up my current reads next week so can start timely!

I think we did a bunch of Seanan McGuire buddy reads during the Harry Potter TT. I haven't read the most resent Wayward Children book but I just checked and my library has the it.

Which leads to a question Come Tumbling Down is 206 pages for the hard cover, 160 for the ebook, 208 for the kindle, but the audiobook is only 4 hours. Do I need to verify word count or is the fact that it isn't a Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scripts/plays (movie and theater), Cookbooks or Poetry book mean that I can use the page count for the default version even if I listen to the audio?

message 45: by Ali (new)

Ali | 99 comments Hi everyone, I'm Alison from Las Vegas, NV. I am a senior in college and currently taking online summer classes. I began getting into reading again last year and this is my first wheel-a-thon. I generally read 6-10 books a month and my favorite genre is fantasy followed by a secondary love for thrillers. Some favorites so far this year include the Broken Earth trilogy, the Poppy War, and the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I'm super excited to see what I'll end up reading for this challenge!

message 46: by Tawallah (last edited Jun 04, 2020 08:53PM) (new)

Tawallah | 409 comments Hi everyone, I'm June from Barbados. I have done wheelathon at least once and Uno challenge. I read quite a range of books- science fiction, fantasy, mystery, ya, historical fiction. But I tend to do most of my reading over the weekend. And I am doing a few other readathon and challenges - Myth Taker and Read Caribbean.

My favorite book for the year? So hard to decide but going with debut novel of 1946- The Street since debut and underrated books tend to be my jam.

Here is my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Looking forward to playing and reading with you. Hi Colleen, good to see you on this team.

Yep - since the book is not any of Children's books/Graphic Novels/Scripts/plays/Cookbooks/Poetry, it's all good to read as long as it's at least 160 pages. So just use the default page count when you're listening to the audiobook.
