Lexi | 4247 comments About this Challenge
RULES
◈ Starts on 12 June and runs for 10 weeks (ending 21 August)
◈ The team with the highest points at the end of the game wins!
◈ Each fortnight (2 weeks) the mods will “spin the wheel" and assign each team a word
◈ The team's task is to read books to spell out the word, gaining points per letter tiered by the book length (see below). Every book read must count for a letter or no points.
◈ The team will get an extra 15 completion points for the first time the word is spelled
◈ Once teams have read their word for the week they can "re-read" the word to gain more letter points, but no additional completion points.
◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count
◈ Books must be at least 160 pages in length.
◈ Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scripts/plays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified by arbookfinder.com or arbookfinder.co.uk (only these sites) as at least 40,000 words or have an audio edition that is at least 5 hours long
◈ Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous rounds to use later in the challenge
◈ Rereads are permitted provided it has been at least 6 months since you last read/listened to the book

Point System
◈ Books less than 160 pages = 0 points
◈ Books between 160 and 1000 pages = 0.1 points/page
◈ Books over 1000 pages = 100 points
(I’m sorry if you love books over 1,000 pages but you get no points for pages over 1,000 so this is not the best time to read Oathbringer, Les Misérables or War and Peace)

Tags
◈ Each colour segment on the wheel has been paired with a selection of genre tags.
◈ If you read and use a book with a matching genre, you will gain 5 bonus points per book, for a maximum of 10 books / 50 points.
◈ Genres must match exactly (though plural/singular is OK, ie Tree or Trees).
◈ There is no minimum number of tags required.
◈ Books must be used in the spell out to qualify for Tag points.
◈ We do not have to use all the tags each week and could read all ten as the same Tag

Task Lists
◈ The challenge comes with a task list
◈ If you read and use a book for a task you will gain 5 bonus points per book
◈ Each player in a team has their own task list (i.e. task #1 can be completed by each member in the team, once each)
◈ Each book can only be used once - one book per task, one task per book

BOM Points
Participating in Book of the Month (BOM) discussions during the time frame of the challenge will score points as follows:
◈ 40 points for writing a discussion question set
◈ 20 points for participating in the discussion
(I will link these further down)

How "Spell it out" Works
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in:
1. the book's title
2. the first letter in the author's first or last name
3. the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name
4. The first letter in the series name

If the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The'), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.

If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used. Translators names can be used, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version.

Cannot use "characters" from non-fiction so author, title and translator/audio if applicable only

Lexi | 4247 comments Welcome to Wheel V and Team Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

My name is Lexi (she/her/hers), and I am a PhD candidate and study zoonotic diseases. I live in Boston, MA USA. I am excited to be your captain and love book challenges of all types. Judith is the co-captain, and we can try to answer any questions you might have. We will be posting information in the next few days in the top posts so keep an eye out for rules, Books of the Month (BOM) and tag links.

Our first word is “Highway Sixty One” and the Tags: Grass, Tree, Forest, Ireland, Hiking. (We need ten tags in the first two weeks. No changes to spelling but can be singular or plural. On a side note, forest versus forests have very different books tagged).

Please check in and tell us what name you want to go by and pronouns. Have you played WHEEL before? Also, what book would you recommend for someone this summer?

My books would be All Systems Red (which is sadly too short for this challenge) or The City We Became. I have played Wheel and been co-captain before.

message 11: by Kristel (new)

Kristel | 287 comments Hi!

I'm Kristel (she/her) and it's my third time playing WaT. I live in Estonia and just finished my master's degree and now trying to figure out what to do next (work, a PhD program?).

For summer recommendations, I read We Are the Ants few summers ago and it has stayed with me since. For the second rec, the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers is not a very difficult, more character-driven sci-fi which I personally find perfect for a summer day.

Do we need to use all of the tags, or could we just read 10 books all with the same tag?

I can't wait to start with the challenge!

Hello Team!

My name is Judith (she/her/hers) and I am an economist in the Toxic Chemical office of the EPA. I live in MD USA, northwest of Baltimore. I have been captain & co-captain for several challenges over the years.

Please ask any and all questions to Lexi or me here in the thread or if it's of sensitive nature feel free to send either of us a PM (private message).

If you like epic fantasy, you can't go wrong with Michael J Sullivan's books. I love Theft of Swords and the other books in the series. I'd also recommend The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black, the first of which is The Cruel Prince. Also anything by Fredrik Backman. I should really just stop there. LOL

message 13: by Lexi (last edited Jun 04, 2020 09:49AM) (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments To answer our first question, we can all read books tagged forests if we want, so no, we do not need to use all the tags. There is also a lot of overlap between them.

Also, I believe both of Judith's recommendations work for forest(s) or tree(s) this week for tag. I will put together a list with recommendations of books I liked with the tags in a little bit.

No, we don't have to use all the tags. Any combination to reach the max of ten. So completely flexible which should make it easier to find them and read books we actually want too.

message 15: by Sixty (new)

Sixty (sixtyone) | 311 comments Hello, everyone! I'm Sixty (she/her) and this is my first time playing wheelathon. I am a college student (astrophysics/mathematics) and I live in Oakley, California (bay area). I am looking forward to playing with you all!

For book recommendations I will suggest a couple of my favorites: Rendezvous with Rama and World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War.

Question: For the "tags" does that refer to the genre tags for a book? If so, is there an easy way to search through them? (sorry, I am new to using goodreads!)

message 16: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments Welcome Sixty, to answer your question on tags, there is not really a good way to search. There are two ways to do it. If the books have only a few tags, the clicking on the tags on the book itself and using the search function works but is really tedious after a few pages.

Next, there are lists for each of the tags and I have linked them in message 6. I just went through all of them and am going to post a list below with my favorites of a variety of genres. I find this perosnally the easier way to find tags.

message 17: by Lexi (last edited Jun 04, 2020 05:13PM) (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments I have added information at the top of the sheet on rules, BOMs and Important links. I have also added links for the tags for Round One to help you all look for books. Feel free to ask any questions here or by private message (PM).

For fun, I have some suggestions for books for a few of the tags (Not grass, you are on your own there).

Forest - The Forest of Hands and Teeth, The Bear and the Nightingale,The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, The Starless Sea, Where the Crawdads Sing, The Invited, The Graveyard Book, The Left Hand of Darkness , Magpie Murders, and The Snow Child

Melanie (mvalente89) | 1026 comments Hey, my power came back on after 33 hours (thanks storms) and teams were assigned. Today's a good day!

Hi everyone! I'm Melanie (she/her) and I live in a tiny town in New Jersey that no one has ever heard of (less than 4,500 people live here). I work in the finance department of a large book publisher and have a deep abiding love of spreadsheets.

I have played wheel a few times, I think this is my third year? Wheel is definitely one of my favorite challenges, in part because it was the first team one I played.

I am primarily a romance reader and I also pick up a lot of mystery thrillers. Here are some of my 5 star reads so far this year (the last two are rereads).

Get a Life, Chloe Brown (The Brown Sisters, #1) by Talia Hibbert Well Met (Well Met, #1) by Jen DeLuca Do You Want to Start a Scandal (Spindle Cove, #5; Castles Ever After, #4) by Tessa Dare Wicked and the Wallflower (The Bareknuckle Bastards, #1) by Sarah MacLean You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks The Great Zoo of China by Matthew Reilly Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels, #3) by Ilona Andrews

A trilogy I read a few years ago works for tags as well. It's called The Falconer and all 3 books work. It's a fun series with a bit of fae and steampunk thrown in.

The Falconer (The Falconer, #1) by Elizabeth May The Vanishing Throne (The Falconer, #2) by Elizabeth May The Fallen Kingdom (The Falconer, #3) by Elizabeth May

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 441 comments Hi everyone, I'm Gem (she/her) from Berkshire, UK. This is my first time doing this challenge, it normally takes me a round to get into the swing of things.
I mainly read horror and thriller but I'll pretty much read anything I can get my hands on.

Weve bought our house this week so when I signed up I knew I wouldn't get done as much reading as I normally would like because of renovations so went low. Does it matter if I read more than the 3 a month I signed up with?

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Hello! Welcome

And nope, you can read as many as you would like to! More points for us that way :)

And congrats on the new place, very exciting. I hate the process of finding a new place to live (stressful), but enjoy designing the new space once I'm in there.

lucy (laladearmun) | 45 comments Hi Everyone, I'm Lucy (She/Her) and I live on the South coast of England. This is my first challenge but with everything going on in the world I wanted something to help motivate me to read more.

I read a mixture of contemporary, chick lit and then True Crime and F1 related books.

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) | 707 comments Hi everyone! I'm Lindsay (she/her/hers) and I'm checking in from Illinois. I have a Bachelor's degree in music and I teach voice lessons part-time, but on the 180, I work full-time in medical records. So I like to keep things interesting. ;)

Reading-wise, I am a mood reader and read much from mystery/thrillers to YA fantasy, sci-fi, contemporary romance, cozy mysteries, some non-fiction, a little urban fantasy....whatever sounds good at the moment. This is my second wheel and I have done three towers. I'm looking forward to playing!

I think I'm hooked on these challenges and I'm looking forward to this! I've been in the field of clinical research for several years and am currently working on treatment in dementia.

Mystery/thrillers and classics are my favorite genres but I'm generally a mood reader. I've listed some Summer reads here.

message 29: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (mvalente89) | 1026 comments I have a couple of questions.

First, for the tags, does it matter if only 1 person has shelved a book with a tag?

For example, I have the below book on my TBR for this month and 1 person has tagged it as Ireland (last page of tags). I'm wondering if it's fine to use for that tag?

Harbor Island (Sharpe & Donovan, #4) by Carla Neggers

Second, for the list of tasks, that list is for each player over the course of the entire challenge right? As in we each have 200 tasks we can choose from for the books we read during the challenge, crossing each task off the list as we fill the spot?

One tag is fine. Most of the tags this week are one person only tags. You can't use your own tag or try to mess with the system but that book is fine

Yes, that is for the full ten weeks and no one is going to finish it. Also, notice the duplicates. You can do some tasks multiple times as the occur on the list multiple times. Each person gets their own task list so keep track for yourself (and we will double check) so you do not claim the same number twice.

Melanie (mvalente89) | 1026 comments Lexi wrote: "One tag is fine. Most of the tags this week are one person only tags. You can't use your own tag or try to mess with the system but that book is fine"

Perfect. Some of the tags are out there. I wonder how the mods come up with some of these? They're all way more imaginative than I am. But hey, that's what keeps these challenges interesting.

Lexi wrote: "Yes, that is for the full ten weeks and no one is going to finish it. Also, notice the duplicates. You can do some tasks multiple times as the occur on the list multiple times. For the task list, would it be ok once we have the planning sheet up for us to add a tab for ourselves with our personal task list to keep track? I'm thinking that may be the easiest (at least for me personally) since we'll already be adding our planned books to that. If the captains prefer to keep the planning sheet uncluttered, I can just create a google sheet for myself to keep track, so no worries either way.

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) | 707 comments I have a question about BOM's (I never remember this going in). So if I have read one of them already, can I still answer the DQ's for points? So for example, I have read Five Feet Apart already previous to the challenge. If I answer the DQ's after we begin, can I earn points for our team? Or no, I still have to have read the book after starting the challenge as well? TIA! =]

message 33: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments Sadly, no. You can reread it if it has been over 6 months but it must be read during the challenge. Let Judith confirm

message 34: by Lexi (new)

Is it the names of shelves?

Thanks

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) | 707 comments Next question from me: is there a rule about ARC's? Are they allowed at all?

message 38: by Bee (last edited Jun 07, 2020 06:44AM) (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments Hi everyone, My name is Abir, it seems we are all she/her in this team. I'm an engeneer, 28 years old, and I love NBRC team challenges, although this is my first wheel spin.
My reading depends on my mood, so I don't really keep a track on the genres I read. I like it I go for it. It keeps things intresting for me.
The 2 weeks per round reallt sold this challenge for me, because sometimes it takes more than a week to finish a 200 page book and other times I can do a 500 page in 3 days, one of the perks of being the only female engeneer in a male dominated team. I'm becoming a mother hen by each passing day.
So if I don't check for more than 2 days, know I'm trying to keep the boys in line, and will return eventually.

PS: You will get a lot of questions from me, I hate reading the rules, because it takes the fun out of me reading books. So it will be better to just tell me what you need for the points and I try to get for you

Lexi | 4247 comments Lala wrote: "Hi all,

Lala, it is the name of the shelves but you cannot use your own shelves/tags. Sadly, there is no way to search tags. The easiest way is to look at the lists of books with that tag and to see if there is a book you want to read on the list.

Round One - "“Highway Sixty One”
Tags: Grass, Tree, Trees, Forest, Forests, Ireland, Hiking

message 40: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ wrote: "Next question from me: is there a rule about ARC's? Are they allowed at all?"

As long as the ARC is on Goodreads, you can read it. I have a few ARCs I hope to get read as well and a few I got as ARCs that have been out for a year now so there is that.

message 41: by Lexi (last edited Jun 07, 2020 08:35AM) (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments Abir (or anyone), no worries on all the rules. You will figure it out as we go. I have included the critical ones below.

Basic Rules and the rest can be figured out as we go:

1. No books started before June 12 count
2. No re-reads within 6 months
3. Books must be at least 160 pages in length.
4. Check word count on Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scripts/plays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books. If you need help with this, post the book in the thread and Judith or I can check for you

5. All book must fit in the spell it out for the round. This includes first letter of title, author, series name, and major characters so most books will fit somewhere. Check with us on non-fiction before you start if you are unsure if author or title will fit

6. Put your book on your wheel shelf when read and add it to the planning spreadsheet

That about does it. Otherwise, BOMs, tags and tasks are meant to be fun and can be figured out as we go. Does that help?

Ok great. Thanks for confirming. I know not all team challenges allow the use of series name and wasn't 100% sure which one Wheel was.

message 45: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments I feel like there are some X series out there so I might go look.

message 46: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments We are a big team and at sign-ups read about 80 books every two weeks so that is at least 5 X's

Also, If anyone likes middle-grade fantasy, The Girl Who Drank the Moon has a main charecter named Xan.

That’s one of my first up. I’ve had the audiobook for awhile I just haven’t gotten to it.

So it works for a tag and an X. Sweet. I’ll take the X in the first spelling then.

Hoping to really make headway on the tracking sheet during Tiny Tyrants nap time today.
