I never planned on going back to Hung Island, Georgia. Ever. I was a top notch Were agent for the secret paranormal Council and happily living in Chicago where I had everything I needed – a gym membership, season tickets to the Cubs and Dwayne – my gay, Vampyre best friend. Going back now would mean facing the reason I’d left and I’d rather chew my own paw off than deal with Hank.
Hank the Tank Wilson was the six foot three, obnoxious, egotistical, perfect-assed, best-sex-of-my-life, Werewolf who cheated on me and broke my heart. At the time, I did what any rational woman would do. I left in the middle of the night with a suitcase, big plans and enough money for a one-way bus ticket to freedom. I vowed to never return.
But here I am, trying to wrap my head around what has happened to some missing Weres without wrapping my body around Hank. I hope I don’t have to eat my words and my paw.
***This novella originally appeared in the Three Southern Beaches collection released July of 2014. This is an extended version of that story.
Robyn writes because the people inside her head won’t leave her alone until she gives them life on paper. Her addictions include shoes (the expensive kind), Coke with extra ice in a styrofoam cup, and bejeweled reading glasses. A former professional actress, she now lives in the south with her family and too many animals to count. Writing gives her a chance to have a job where working in her P.J.’s is acceptable. I'm on an email list where I get free books each week online if I want to download them and this was one of them. TOTAL WIN!!! It was soooo fun, snarky, and adorable. I'm happy that it will be a series.
So, we have Essie, a werewolf who works for WTF - Werewolf Treaty Federation. I already love the acronym. She left her small town a year ago to take this job when she found out that her worthless boyfriend had cheated on her. But, she's being sent back into this town for a job. I hope she bites him if she sees him.
Her ex, Hank, is the sheriff and werewolf pack leader. She's going to have to work with him, and he has no idea why she left him a year earlier. He wants answers and he wants her back.
It totally was.
The best part? Essie's bff, Dwayne, the gay male vampire. He is awesome and fabulous. He also has the weirdest, but highly entertaining stories ever.
"You think you have problems? Try running naked through coals while being pelted with boar's teeth."
Um. Okay. That does sound worse.
Dwayne hits it off with Essie's granny - an ex-stripper who is also hilarious. I swear if there was a Dwayne and Granny show I would totally watch it. Just like I want to see their drag show act at the local club. I hear they are amazing.
This book hits all of the notes: funny, outrageous, romantic, sexy, and plenty of danger. The only thing that made me deduct a star was how easily the couple's problem was resolved and how suddenly it did a 180. But, since the book was pretty short, and since I loved both of the main characters, I'll allow it.
I think many active Goodreads members would agree they read for a couple of pretty specific reasons . . .
On particularly crappy days, I like to indulge in some wereporn. Mainly because . . . .
Great googly moogly!
Don’t judge. Y’all know you’ve probably read some pretty shallow stuff a time or two as well . . .
Ready to Were is the story of Essie, a woman who hightailed it out of her small Georgia town when she found out Hank, the man she thought she would be spending the rest of his life with, was spending some quality time with three other broads (simultaneously) as well. Essie moved on and never looked back, training to become a successful agent with the paranormal counsel and finding a fabulous gay vampire bestie. When women start disappearing back in Essie’s home town, she is assigned to the case. Her local point of contact? The sheriff – Hank.
You know what that means, right?????
If you’re looking for a light little PNR filler, this might be a winner. The entire ensemble cast of characters was entertaining, Essie wasn’t a doormat like most females in these types of stories, Hank wasn’t OTT alpha like most males, Dwayne and Grandma were quite a kick, it's short and the pacing was good, the romance believable, and the best part of all??? It’s FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE on Kindle.
KelticKat was reading this last week and her updates are the reason I snatched this up. Thank you!!!!!
While this is not a bad book, it is not a good book either. Like most of the aspects of this book, everything is balanced, which leaves only a bland sandwich for readers to sink their teeth into.
Many of the characters (indeed, all of the evil ones) are horribly one-dimensional, ignoring the opportunity to breath some extra life into this novel. The plot is predictable, and only the actions and lines of Essie’s gay vampire BFF Dwayne created an aura of inspired creativity. Essie is our female lead character, a were agent sent back to her home town to investigate the disappearance of young females.
Which is a shame, because author Robyn Peterman can certainly string sentences together, and the introduction of the WTF (Werewolf Treaty Federation) and Essie’s chosen profession hinted at fun to come. Unfortunately, the paranormal romance genre is overloaded, and nowadays snarky/sassy heroines are a dime a dozen. Without a whole lot of something special, this novel simply falls back into the pile, struggling to be seen while buried under other similar books. Three stars.
This is a straight-forward read but a little too, uh, manufactured for my taste. Both the characters and their situations tended to be broadcast a little broadly with too many contrivances to buy into at all. I mean, she left a year ago and in that time she not only completed super speshal agent training, but became a top agent with lots of experience to lean on. When it turned out how stupid she was in leaving in the first place, I kind of lost all respect for her. I might have made it further, but I didn't really care for Hank, either. He's demanding and way too sure of himself. Add the instalove and the whole "mate" trope and I really lost patience. I quit at about the half-way mark when Junior (Hank's brother) turned out to be some super genius out of the blue. The plot already had a lot of holes and I found I just didn't care any more.
I love snark, furry snark, old snark, fiery snark, sparkly snark, nothing beats a good laugh. If you add a good story, with some heartbreak, back stabbing and kick arse action you have a winning combination for this reader. This book hit that happy spot, I enjoyed it, had fun with these characters and chuckled loudly in public while reading it. I can't believe I almost passed up on this and it was (is still) am Amazon freebie. Hey, the majority of them have been lacking for me. Give it a try, the price is right. The story. Young woman who is recovering from broken heart is signed to work in her old town where ex-heartbreaker lives as Alpha. This is her home town, where everyone knows her business and where she can't avoid the scandal/drama of her past. She travels with her BFF a flamboyant gay super sexy vamp, who had some of the best lines and wore the best shoes. Granny, her old loving sweet granny who happens to be an ex-stripper lives life to the fullest and offers her granddaughter her nipple-less bras. Yes, wild she is and that little example isn't the most crazy. The heartbreaker jerk Alpha she is recovering from, just happens to be the sherif and the single hottie every warm blooded female in town drools for. She of course earned her lesson. There is danger, romance, arse kicking, back stabbing, fighting, fire, karma, and fun. I plan on reading the rest of this series and more from this author
*spoilerish, if that's possible for a book that's so obvious*
DNF 40%
At 10% I wrote a status update that echoed my thoughts from reading the book's synopsis. It said, "I'm just gonna lay this out there right now. If it turns out that the whole 'Hank cheated' thing turns out to be a misunderstanding in which she ran off too soon to work out the truth (oops, sorry), I'm just gonna 1 star this sucker for the predictable, over used, insulting to women plot-line. Just sayin'"
I only needed 35% to know. You can't get much more predictable than being able to pick the plot-twist from the synopsis and have it confirmed by 35%. And that's before I even get into the cheesy, cliche writing and vapid MC. And it sure as heck isn't even touching how heavily and often the MC has to be embarrassed and shamed in front of the man to be womanly. Ugh, gross.
I really liked this story about a female werewolf working for an agency named Werewolf Treaty Federation (WTF). This book is funny, has great romance, alpha weres, a gay vampire and dragons. Lots of fun supernatural goings on. I'll definitely read more in this series.
Fans of Danielle Garret, and Molly Harper who haven’t already devoured this series should snap them up on audio.
The story opens when we meet Essie, a young were, who left her hometown and fiancé back in Hung Island, GA and joined the WTF (Werewolf Treaty Federation). Her bestie is a gay vampire named Dwayne, and she lives in a crappy apartment in Chicago. She misses her hunky alpha ex-boyfriend and home. However, she loves her job, and she is good damn good at it.
Her boss assigns her to a case involving missing were women and a modeling agency. But Houston, we have a problem. The agency is located in Hung Island and her ex is the sheriff. Not to be deterred, she takes Dwayne with her. Can she solve the case? Will she fall back into the arms of her cheating, hunky ex-fiancé?
From the start I loved the humor, Dwayne and the sassy young were Essie. I fell in love with the rest of the motley crew we are introduced to in Hung, well except for a maybe a few sisters.. but you’ll have to listen to find out.
The case was interested and involved another supernatural group. One that will become a central theme to the Shift Happen series. Of course, I immediately dove into book two, Some Were in Time.
Peterman weaves the romance throughout the story. It provided balance giving us wicked banter, delicious chemistry and plenty of swoons.
I'd say the MC had all the immaturity of a 12-14 year old, but I fear that would be insulting to 12-14 year olds. Add in an incredibly over the top gross caricature of a gay best friend, all other women are the enemy out to steal her man, stalking portrayed as love, and I stopped in disgust about 35% in.
“He’s her mate and he dipped his stick in several other … actually many other oil tanks. So she dumped his furry player ass, snuck away in the middle of the night and hadn’t really planned on ever going back there again.” – Dwayne
Last night was “cleanse the palette” night. After some difficult reads, with deep thought processes needed, it was time to pull up a “freebie” from an Indie author. Ground rules: the author’s first book in a series (I had thought this was actually her first book, then I got a gander at the whole NYT and USA Today Bestselling Author thing – ah well!), a ‘light’ read with a female lead, and it has to promise to have some humour.
What I came up with was Ready to Were: Shift Happens, Book One. Originally appearing in Three Southern Beaches, which I haven’t read, this novella extends a short. Essie McGee is an agent with WTF – the Werewolf Treaty Federation. Her job is, basically, to go out and kill things. Quite a bit different from her life on Hung Island, Georgia, where her main interest was her sexy Alpha Hank Wilson. That all ended when Hank couldn’t keep it in his pants – who wants to be barefoot and pregnant and at the beck and call of a player – but when Essie gets marching orders back to go back to Hung Island on a case, even though she would rather chew off her own paw, well. Hilarity happens.
Dragging her gay 300 year old Vampyre best friend along with her for moral support, Essie blows into Hung Island to all the things she left behind. Including Grandma Bobby Sue – and the dreaded Hank the Cheater. But as Dwayne says, “you’re far too beautiful to be hung up on a goober.”
There are missing women, strangers in town, and a desperate rush to find the women before it is too late. All well written, paced and plotted. But the best part? I am lying in bed with my Shih Tzu, Koda, and I laughed so hard when we met Grandma Bobby Sue that he leaped up off my stomach and started barking at whatever made his mom blow up!
I loved this book! As I said, it is free on Amazon, so grab your copy and sit back to enjoy yourself! Published November 25, 2014, I guess I will have to wait a bit for the next installment. Bummer!
Merged review:

Dwayne always likes to give information not wanted, "he's her mate and he dipped his stick in several other..actually many other oil tanks. So she dumped his furry player a**, snuck away in the middle of the night and hadn't really planned on ever going back there again." Granny reminds me of mine not as eccentric but still opened minded, "I have about fourteen sequinned bras," Granny chimed in as she sauntered into the kitchen and grabbed a muffin. "Some of them are nipple-less, but I'm sure I have a few that would work." Essie that girl is something else, "I prefer that you keep your manly parts too," I said and stopped a breath away from him. His body went as tight as a drum and his Mr. Happy was very happy." Junior I hope that boy gets a story because he was another character I fell in love with and the chemistry he and Hank have as brothers is funny and attractive, "sit," Hank snapped. "you think I'd forget what we were talking about because I got my balls handed to me?" This book has so much humor, sexual tension, and two hot hung werewolf men!
A snarky Werewolf agent goes home to solve a missing persons case. It's a bit funny, a bit snarky, and wholly entertaining. A best friend Vampire that apparently has a lot of hidden skills makes this seemingly inept agent successful. First in a series that makes me wonder how much more wacky these characters will get.
Free on most ebook formats. I read a signed, purchased, paperback version and do not regret the cost.
This is a new series, but not a new author for me, having previously read her Fashionably Dead series and loving it. Robyn Peterman is undeniably the queen of laugh out loud hilarity and bawdy salaciousness! And this novel has it in droves, with enough double entendres to leave you guffawing and gasping for breath. The characters the author creates are larger than life and there are more than a few of them in this story. There's our protagonist Essie who works as an agent for WTF (Werewolf Treaty Federation) and is sent to her hometown Hung Island to find out what is happening to missing female Werewolves. She's not exactly glad to be ordered to investigate, as she vowed never to return after her heart was broken by her cheating ex-boyfriend Hank, the local sheriff who is also the Alpha of the Werewolf pack. Cue his nickname, Hank the Tank from Hung, and you can see where the author is going with this. Add in Dwayne, Essie's campy, gay, drag queen, Vampyre bff and her ex-stripper Granny BS and you know you're in for a hell of a ride! No spoilers here so I'll set aside further synopsis except to say that if you're a Robyn Peterman fan you'll absolutely luuurrv her new series, and if you're new to her work don't forget to pack a spare pair of knickers cause she's pee-your-pants funny!
From the name of the island to the personalities of the characters, this authors wit was apparent. Essie is this spitfire WTF agent (and no it is not what you all are thinking). Her best friend Dwayne is this her very flamboyant, gay best friend. Then we have sex on a stick Hank. This is the first book I have read by Robyn Peterman and holy smokes, I can guarantee you it won't be my last. I laughed out loud at the characters. I loved the interactions between Essie and Granny. This is a feel good, romantic comedy with a preternatural spin! Oh, I cannot leave out the hot sex scenes that are easily pulled off amongst the comedy. At one point, I got chills during a scene between Essie and Hank. I love when a book can bring out those kind of emotions. Rock on Robyn! 5 fangs.
Ready To Were, Shift Happens series by Robyn Peterman is another winner for Robyn. Essie is a secret werewolf agent sent to her hometown, Hung Island. Hank is the Alpha werewolf sheriff and Essie's ex. The sparks and the hilarious snarky comments will keep you reading as together they try to solve the mystery.
The secondary characters of Dwayne, Essie's grandmother, and the others were all great supporting characters that added dimension to both Essie and Hung Island. Fabulous new cuss words from Robyn and her trademark humor make this a must read for any of Robyn's fans.
I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I love Robyn Peterman because every time I pick up one of her books, I know I am going to love the original story line, laugh hysterically at all of the characters and walk away with a bunch of new funny as hell cuss words! Plus her heroes are always super hot, ultra sexy and major alphas! Hank was no different! OMG Dwayne was fantastic as well as granny, they were so funny! Essie was the perfect partner for Hank, yeah she was gullible in her youth but she owned up to her mistakes and she grew into her own. I loved her character!
Robyn Peterman is hilarious! Little plot, but Ready to Were is a fast, smooth read and a great pick me up during those mornings or before bed! Agent Essie griping when she reunites with her ex, the small-town police chief she has to work with on a missing persons case:
"He sat down behind his desk in the chair we'd nicknamed the BJ Mobile and crossed his stupidly muscled arms over his stupidly muscled chest."
I loved this book. It is funny, sexy, action packed, and slightly silly at times. The best part is, these characters will be back! We can share more adventures with them!!
Witty, sarcastic, and just plain fun reading, READY TO WERE by Robyn Peterman is, beneath the laughter, a second chance romance for a WTF (Werewolf Treaty Federation) agent and a small town sheriff, who also happens to be the pack alpha.
Welcome to Hung Island, GA., and although Essie vowed never to return, she finds herself back and working with the dog who cheated on her. But wait, there’s more! Meet Essie’s best friend, Dwayne, the gay vampire and her grandmother, the ex-stripper and if you haven’t figured it out, this is a wild ride…filled with laughs, love and attitude in spades! Read it for the entertainment, re-read it because it is even more entertaining the second time around as the action, the romance and the humor, not to mention the characters will leave you chuckling and desperate for more!
Series: Shift Happens - Book 1 Publication Date: November 25, 2014 Publisher: Robyn Peterman Genre: Paranormal Romantic Humor Print Length: 168 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble For Reviews, Giveaways, Fabulous Book News, follow: http://tometender.blogspot.com
If you need a good laugh, Ready to Were: Shift Happens is just the ticket! Even the title made me giggle. Essie, the werewolf secret agent, and her sidekick/best friend Dwayne, the 300 year old flamboyantly gay vampire, travel to Hung Island (her hometown) and hijinks ensue! Hank, the well-hung (pun intended) werewolf sheriff/Alpha is determined to get back in Essie's pants. Granny BS and the Tinas are just some of the colorful characters you'll meet in this hilarious and brilliant story. I can't wait for book 2!
Once again Robyn Peterman delivers a book that is full of action and intrigue. The dialogue and inner musings of the characters in Ready to Were are laugh out loud funny, while the story is filled with characters so full of love, I'm left wishing I could be part of their group. Robyn always writes characters that are so down to earth and real that you feel like you know them and miss them when you turn the last page of the book.
I have to say that it has been confirmed that Robyn Peterman is certifiably hilarious. This book had me laughing out loud. Rip roaring funny! A little steamy and a darn good story. This is not for folks who like dark gothic werewolves. But if you like a snarky heroine, a hunky hero and a bunch of looney-toon secondary characters this romp is for you.
i have yet to read a book written by Robyn Peterman that i haven't loved! this book was better then i imagined it would be. they dynamics between essie and hank was top notch! this book kept me rivvoted and needing to know what happened next! I cannot wait to see what Robyn has in store for her readers next
This made for a quick, quirky and at times hilarious paranormal read. While the story was never very emotional or intense I found myself really enjoying the wide array of crazy characters. I also appreciate it being offered as a freebie. I'll check out more in this series and definitely more of this writer's work
Just finished 'Ready to Were' and I absolutely LOVED it. I was pulled in immediately & couldn't put it down. The characters are great and the secondary characters are so much fun. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book!!!!!
WTF! Werewolf Federation Treaty. Only the crazy, warped mind of Robyn Peterman can come up with something as awesome as that! This is a sexy & funny read that you'll love. I know I did. Robyn Peterman never disappoints!
