I read The Cold Six Thousand by James Ellroy.
Two cops and a gangster (undercover) are called to Dallas on the day of the Kennedy assassination to “clean up.” For the next five years their lives are "a whirlwind of plots and counterplots" (quoted from the GR blurb). That's a death, a move to a new town (actually several new towns), and a significant change in their jobs.
