When You're Not Reading a Cozy

Luffy— I’ve given all of the books four or five star ratings. I was prompted to do a reread last year by the fact my then 13-yr-old niece was reading the series and watching the movies for the first time. I enjoyed them as much as the first time.

Funny... Out of all the books, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was the one I least enjoyed. For me, there was just tooooooooooooooo much "on the road/run" non-action stuff -- and I don't mean mix-it-up action, but any sort of real action. I found myself struggling to make it through the middle of the book to get to the ending. And, I began to really hate Harry more and more.
Maybe Rowling's is so good that her writing put me in that desolate no-man's-land along with the characters, but that whole part of the book was tan to me, colorless. Again, maybe that's what she meant to do, but trudging through it, for me, was not fun.
I'm glad I read it, but I don't know that I would read this entry again.
Karen, there are some parts that are a bit slower, but I didn’t mind them. I viewed it as a bit of a breather between action scenes.
Argh! It just ate my post! Hate it when GR does that. Will try to recreate. 😐
I couldn’t decide what to read next, after finishing two really long books back-to-back, so opted for a short story in a collection I am trying to work through between other works. This evening I read To-Morrow by Joseph Conrad (and now I have Bette Midler singing “Shiver Me Timbers” in my head). Good story with bit of a twist at the end.
One of the criteria for this year’s PopSugar Ultimate Challenge is an anthology. The one I am working through has 1981 pages, of which I’ve read just over 500. I’ve been hopping around, and page lengths run the gamut of 4 to 55. I started with those of lesser page counts, hence only 500 pages, though I have read 38/100 stories. My goal is another dozen stories, though I think at 500 pages I can go ahead and count it already.

Brenda— It is indeed, which is why I’ve been picking away at it a few at a time. And, as I said, some are really short, some quite a bit longer. They span multiple genres, too. The book is 100 Classic Short Stories. As you might imagine, I’ve enjoyed some more than others.
I would find it difficult to review a book of that size and diversity! But good on you for persisting - sounds like quite a variety there!
My current non-cozy reads
Black Order by James Rollins, the 3rd Sigma Force novel.
All Systems Red by Martha Wells The first of the Murderbot series and the winner of bunches of awards.
I finished reading Photos of You and The Summer Guests and listened to There There and Hidden Figures. I enjoyed all four.
I just started the Carlotta Carlyle series by Linda BarnesI'm on the first book which is called A Trouble of Fools
I am reading
by Juliet Blackwell. I have read her cozies for years. She is now writing a few stand alone books in France. This is set is present day and 1915 France. Well written with lots of nice details added in.
Started a reread of Mansfield Park by Jane Austen last night for another group. This is my second reading of this book.
I'm just finishing North Country, by Howard Frank Mosher, about a driving trip across country from Lubec, Maine to just south of Vancouver, BC, all along the US-Canada border, going back & forth across. Sort of like Travels with Charlie, but more about the people he meets & listens to. He lives in very-northern Vermont.
My review for
Brave Girl, Quiet Girl: A Novel by Catherine Ryan Hydehttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My review for
The Hidden Hand of Death by Lawrence J. Epsteinhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've got a non-fiction book this week:
Leave Only Footprints by Conor Knighton https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Sorry to be posting this so late in the day, but I just read my e-mail...Today (May 20, 2020) only free romance reads for e-readers. (Maybe check May 21, 2020, too???). The site says there are 200+ available.
There are links to the biggest e-book retailers -- for EPUB readers: Apple (iBooks); Barnes and Noble (Nook); GooglePlay; and Kobo; and MOBI readers: Amazon (Kindle).
No need to sign up for newsletters, etc.; just click the links to the retailers and peruse (and get!) the freebies. Also, the last time I remember this happening, though there were repeats at the different retailers, some retailers had offerings the others didn't.
Happy hunting for things other than cozies!
Finished Mansfield Park today, and enjoyed it as much as I did the first reading. Am now reading an older rom-suspense, In the Blink of an Eye by Julie Miller.
Just finished The Snake Tattoo by Linda BarnesNow starting the 3rd book in the Carlotta Carlyle series called Coyote
My current non-cozy reads:
All Systems Red by Martha Wells
King Javan's Year by Katherine Kurtz
The Path of Daggers by Robert Jordan
Started White Fang for a classic group read. Managed to get through parts one and two of five so far today. The first part especially was hard to put down.

Brenda— I’ve been wanting to read White Fang since reading The Call of the Wild a few years ago. I’ve also read The Scarlet Plague by London, which is completely different from his two best-known novels. The first 65 pages of White Fang read fairly fast. I’d be at least another 40 pages further if I hadn’t set it aside to watch Thor: The Dark World tonight.
I loved The Call of the Wild a few years ago, so I might see if I can locate a copy of White Fang - thanks Heather. And you've got to have variety - enjoy!
Thanks Heather, I just downloaded it from Project Gutenberg - not sure when I'll get to it but it's on my kindle now..
Brenda— Yes, variety is good. I see from your shelves that you read as widely across different genres as I do.
I finished White Fang tonight, much faster than I anticipated, though it is only about 200 pages. It is nonstop action from the beginning. There are parts that really anger you, especially IMO, most of part four, but it leaves you rooting for the wolf and all mistreated creatures. As appalling as some parts are, I had difficulty putting it down and liked the ending. I think I need to cleanse my mind with a short story now.

Not sure what I’ll pick up next, but I’m leaning towards another non-cozy.
