If I'm reading a SS book, I'm going to list the stories under it's title.

I’ve toyed in the past with the idea of including info on the anthology/collection in my citations, but have resisted performing that extra work. Maybe this year I’ll break down. :-)

I ended up deleting my 1st entry in error and thankfully found a cached version on the internet. It wasn't up to date but it was so much better than a total loss.

Ugh. I think we can all sympathize with that kind of experience, Corinne.

Hi Corinne - yeah, I figure that it's fair to add short fiction that I've listened to here as well those stories that I've read - on the basis that it's all short fiction no matter what the format. :) I'm happy to hear that you're discovering some new e-magazines based on some of what I read/listened to. I've discovered some of these publications and read their short stories because I'm interested in submitting (flash) stories to them.

I'm very impressed with the amount of short fiction you read though - I need to catch up! :P

Good going, Canavan! 450 short stories! :O

I notice a story by Fintan O'Toole there. I didn't know he wrote fiction, so I must check that out.

EDIT: Oh I see that's an essay by O'Toole. Makes more sense.

Yes, for the last few months I’ve been dipping into book review periodicals. I used to do that a lot more often when I had more free time on my weekends. The O'Toole article was review of a book by Noelle D. Gallagher entitled Itch, Clap, Pox: Venereal Disease in the Eighteenth-Century Imagination .

I like to read the New York Review of Books, the London Review of Books and the Times Literary Supplement whenever I can but I also seem to have less time to read them these days. The book O'Toole reviewed sounds interesting but I saw you only gave the review two stars - a dull review or an uninteresting book?

Apologies for the delay in responding to your question, Greg. To be honest, it had been so long since I read the review, that I needed to go back and jog my memory. In looking at it with fresh eyes, perhaps I was unduly harsh. (I’m going to use spoiler tags here, not because of spoilerish content, but because I can’t talk about my reaction without edging into a potentially divisive area. If you don’t want to read about current politics, please don’t reveal what the tags conceal.) (view spoiler)

No problem about the delay. I think I get what you're saying - that O'Toole was labouring his point about that matter. Also, the book does focus on the 18th century....

Canavan | 548 comments At the beginning of this year I formulated rather grandiose plans about the number of stories I was going to read in 2019, but, in fact, I didn’t even manage to do as well as I did in 2018. Ah, well.

As 2019 starts to draw to a close I wanted to thank those who participated in this thread, particularly Corinne, Greg, and Elke. I don’t say so very often, but I really do enjoy perusing everyone’s entries.

Grandiose plans, eh? Well, 598 stories read (so far) is pretty good going even if you didn't reach your 2018 total IMHO. I also enjoy checking out other people's lists and finding an interesting anthology to add to my TBR list in the process. Thanks to you, Corinne and Elke for listing those anthologies. Thanks also to Char for setting up the topic.

Corinne wrote: "I look forward to podcasts filling that hunger for stories so I expect my 2020 SS numbers to be much higher. I already have about 60 vetted. I even made a section in my 2020 tracking for those on podcasts :D"

I saw you listing a few podcasts over the year, Corinne. I'm not that used to listening to (as opposed to reading) stories that well but I did check out a few during the year (listed above). I might listen to a few more next year as I get more used to them in which case I'll keep an eye on the ones you listen to.

I only read a bit further because I don't want to spoil the story for myself.

After all this time, I fear I have built up expectations to the point where you’re bound to be disappointed! :)

I like Charles L. Grant as an editor.

I’ll be interested in your reaction to the Brennan story. I agree with your take on Grant — he was a gifted editor.
