Cassandra | 5895 comments THE EVERY YEAR CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1 - December 31, 2016

Your goal is to read a book published every year since you were born, or you can choose a year something special happened (e.g, you graduated, you got married, etc.) and read from that year.

This challenge will help us check out the literary styles from different years.

Tips:
1. The number of books you read is 2016 minus the year you choose plus one.
2. Goodreads has a great feature you can use to find books from certain years. Use this link (https://www.goodreads.com/book/popula...) then change 2010 to whatever year you're looking for.

-----

Example

Let's say I pick 2003 because that was the year I graduated from high school.

2003 Tinker
2004
The Wisdom of Crowds
2005
Ender In Exile
2006
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
2007
Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning
2008
The Hunger Games
2009
Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action
2010
The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work
2011
Uncertainty: Turning Fear and Doubt into Fuel for Brilliance
2012
Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore
2013
The Illusion of Separateness
2014
Station Eleven
2015
Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania
2016
Morning Star

Cassandra | 5895 comments How to Participate
1. Post here telling the challenge leader that you'd like to join the challenge. You can choose your books for the challenge at the beginning, or add them as you go. You can join a challenge at any time, as long as the challenge is still active.

2. Whenever you finish a book for the challenge, post here and let the challenge leader know so they can update your progress.

Some members choose to update their original post with their progress to keep track of their challenge more easily, but make sure to also post a new message so the challenge leader knows to go look at your original post. You can look at how other members report their progress to find a strategy that works well for you.

For more information about how challenges work, check out this thread or ask your challenge leader.

Paul (kickbackyak) | 1571 comments One small question that I'm admittedly not too concerned about, but that I figure is still better if it's asked: how are we dealing with books in translation? Would they only count for the year they came out in English (or the language people read them in, it doesn't have to be English of course)?

I'm also interested to see if ideas flow between people who've picked the same years :)

message 18: by Cassandra (last edited Nov 30, 2015 08:51AM) (new)

Cassandra | 5895 comments I think that's up to you. Personally, what I do is see if Goodreads has a "first published year" for the book. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle was published in English in 1997, but in parentheses next to the publishing year it says "first published 1994" which in this case is the year the book was published in Japanese. I would go with the first published year, but you can choose a different method.

Candiss (Tantara) | 933 comments I'll join this one. I'd like to read from my birth year - 1970 - but that's simply too many books for me to commit to, especially with other challenges on deck and my intention to use only books I own (or library books for scheduled group reads) if I can help it. 1989 - my graduation year - is still too many for me.

I'll go with 1995 - the year I moved to the Pacific Northwest. I only have to add 4-5 books in addition to titles I'm already committed to reading. There are 4 books I do not own.

1995:
1996: Bellwether - Connie Willis
1997: As She Climbed across the Table - Jonathan Lethem
1998: The Antelope Wife - Louise Erdrich
1999:
2000: Twenty Fragments of a Ravenous Youth - Xiaolu Guo
2001:
2002: Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal - Christopher Moore
2003: Steps Through the Mist: A Mosaic Novel - Zoran Živković
2004: Diary - Chuck Palahniuk
2005: Ōoku: The Inner Chambers, Vol. 1 - Fumi Yoshinaga
2006: Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries - Neil deGrasse Tyson
2007: The Vegetarian - Han Kang
2008: Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft - Joe Hill
2009: Ransom - David Malouf
2010: The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake - Aimee Bender
2011: China in Ten Words - Yu Hua
2012: Fatale, Vol. 1: Death Chases Me - Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips
2013: Wakulla Springs - Andy Duncan & Ellen Klages
2014: Here - Richard McGuire
2015: The Library at Mount Char - Scott Hawkins
2016: This Census-Taker - China Miéville

Sace Is is cheating if I decide to read children's books for my years? I was just thinking it would be neat since I'm starting with the year my child was born.

message 32: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5895 comments Thanks, Stephanie! It does make things much easier, and I'll change your name in the other challenge as well.

Sara - Anything that Goodreads counts as a book works for challenges- including children's books, comics, and cookbooks among other things - so it's not cheating at all.

I think I will go for the year I started my current job - 2001. That would put me at 16 books.

Sace Sara - Anything that Goodreads counts as a book works for challenges- including childr..."

I think I'm going to end up mixing it up a little. I'm also trying to read books I already own. I am banning myself from buying any books in 2016.

I'm having fun planning!
