I usually either pick up an old favorite or a short story. I do the whole Netflix binge thing, too, but I always try to beard the lion in it's den.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I go Percy Jackson, Hunger Games, Mortal Instruments, Harry Potter and, I think, Divergent...

What are the other two?

Is this first one Twilight or vampires, do you think?

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I've been reading exclusively ebooks for the past 3 or 4 years now, but recently a friend lent me a paperback she wanted me to read.

Last night I caught myself tapping the page to try to advance to the next one, and then just staring at it and waiting for it to refresh.

I also held my finger on a word, more than once, to try and define it.

LOL... Anyone else?

LOL!

I've heard of other people doing it but I haven't yet.

But I also currently read a healthy mix of all the formats. With audios being the smallest.

Haha, I got up out of bed and tried to read it while I walked to the bathroom, was confused when the "screen" went dark in the hallway.

message 3960: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I've also caught myself trying to pull up the wiki information or definition of a word on a paperback.
Or scramble to find an adequate book mark because I'm used to always having one w/ my Kindle.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Hey Dawn. I have to buy a corporate baby gift. O_O

And I'm clueless. Could you give me some suggestions?

message 3962: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 506 comments I very nearly pressed a word to get the definition yesterday...

Also I got annoyed that I had to have the light on next to my bed when reading and my hands started hurting (reading a 600 page hardback)... I have no idea how I used to read these books in bed, there is no position that is comfortable!

I do enjoy the book smell though, been missing that :)

Like a baby shower gift for someone at work?

Avoid clothes. Soft blankets are cool. Teething toys. Bibs and stuff like that. Maybe a gift card for the bulk and fill it out with a few fluff items?

message 3964: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments A gift for a client from the entire office - and all I know is that it's a girl and she's less than 3 months.

message 3965: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) If I'm reading ebooks for a long time and then switch over I'll find myself tapping to change pages or trying to look up definitions. I also find it a hassle that when I'm reading a paperback I have to plan my lighting so I can see.

message 3966: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I can do avoiding clothes. :-D

I wanted to get this but I was told that the client's wife is a little too traditional for it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...

Nancy D Miz-Firefly aka Sparky (miz-firefly) You can't go wrong with receiving blankets otherwise known as burp rags Trust me there is no such thing as too many. With a newborn in the house laundry is low on the priority list and the dirty ones pile up quick. And soft fluffy blankets too baby doesn't care so much, but mom likes the snuggly ones best.

I like it, but you should probably try to avoid anything that may not fit the style they have picked out.

message 3969: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I agree with the burp cloths. We went through those like water.

message 3970: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I sort of disagree with burp cloths. We got a bunch of cute ones from people, but I never use them. What we use instead are flatfold cloth diapers. They are cheap and are perfect for stashing everywhere and cleaning up various baby bodily fluids!

Huh. Never thought of those - my cousin used cloth diapers and wipes (for diapers and wipes) so I never thought of them in any other way.

These are awesome! My mom used to babysit and we had them all over the house. We'd use them as dust cloths once they got too stained.

message 3973: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) LOL... I have definitely tried to turn DTB pages by tapping, swiping, or pressing the edge. Seriously. Muscle memory is great sometimes, but really aggravating at other times.

Trying to look up words in a DTB... all the time.

Even worse than that is when I spend a good chunk of time on my phone and then switch to my Kindle, I try to tap the screen to wake it up.

...3 or 4 times before remembering that that function does not exist on that device.

message 3974: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I have been annoyed when I come across a word in a DTB that I'm not familiar with that I can't look it up right away.

That said, the dictionary on my tablet seems to suck, because half the words aren't found anyway.

message 3975: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I hate that I can't have both a British and an American dictionary on my Kindle. The British versions are usually much better, but I lost the one I had somehow.

Orlok Nyssa wrote: "I hate that I can't have both a British and an American dictionary on my Kindle. The British versions are usually much better, but I lost the one I had somehow."

Probably telling you something you already know, but to change the default dictionary on the Kindle (depends which version, of course):

Home > Menu > Select 'Settings' > Menu > 'Change Primary Dictionary'

Won't work if you have actually lost the dictionary, though. The only way I know to reload the dictionary is a bit severe.:

Tools - Options - Registration - Deregister including remove all licensed content. Not sure if you need to restart, might be no need.
Re-register and you when you need to check a word, the dictionary will download again.

I actually did lose it. I lost all of them and had to contact Amazon. Unfortunately, they would only put the American one back on for me. I'd hate to reregister and redownload everything I have on there already.

Thank you, though. :)

I do it, too. But when I do it too much I get depressed and a bit aggressive. Not in a physical way but in a "all humans are crap" way that is a terrible view on life.

message 3987: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I tried to edit a book I've already read and add additional read dates... And it seemed to work! Easily! It even shows on your review how many times you've read it (mine now says "read 3 times". Awesome! I now wanna go back and update all the books :-D

message 3988: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes I managed it and you can remove the dates too. Just need to remember to click the 'My Activity' link to get to entering the dates.

message 3989: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Meh. I will keep using the alternate editions (if I read/add books to GR anymore). I like having my reviews match the edition and be separated. Plus the dates read section is a mess.

I'm not impressed.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Question:
I have the book Serial Killers Uncut listed on my shelves as a FoF book club selection, but I don't see it on the FoF shelf. Does that mean that maybe it was a nominee instead?

I rarely add the nominations to my shelves unless I know it's something I want to read but this would not have been my first choice (I leave the serial killing entertainment to Criminal Minds).

Was this selected as a group read at some point? If not I'll probably unshelve it.

message 3995: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

message 3997: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I have had a revelation due to something that happened yesterday.

Cable installers and possibly all "cable" personnel aren't human and are possibly hostile.

A few years ago I had a big lolloping dog who lived everybody...except a cable guy who came to our house once. I had to hold his collar to keep him from attacking the cable guy. I didn't think much about it, I figured he just had some scent of another dog or something my dog didn't like.

Then yesterday we had to have some of the indoor components of our Comcast replaced and repaired. The cable guy was friendly and all...but our cat began yowling as soon as he came in.l He ran to another room and I couldn't calm him. he finally went to my daughters room ran under the bed and climbed up inside springs through a hole he tore there....

Conclusion, there's something alien about cable people...they walk among us.

message 3998: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments LOL!

Well, I read an article today that said dogs recognize when people are being rude - especially to their owners.

Maybe your pets also recognize when you're being swindled...

^.^

message 3999: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Possibly...I ashamed at how much we pay for cable. If my daughter wasn't actually payimg it I wouldn't have it.
