Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Hi...just wanted to tell someone. I'm so depressed I can't get into anything. I'm laying aside all the "stuff" I'm reading and going back to reread something I liked before. Hope I can sort of sink into a good book.

I hope you find a good book that resonates with you.

And if you need an ear...

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Just life I guess. I restarted Green Rider. I got an audio copy of The Fellowship of the Ring from the library but it turned out to be a dramatization and only annoyed me.

I think the physical deterioration is getting to me. I'm having more and more trouble getting around which of course feeds on itself. The less I get around the harder it becomes. Hope I can get my knees replaced soon.

:(

When are you scheduled for them? I hope you can get it soon, too.

Is there anything you can do temporarily to assist with the pain a bit?

My grandma had a similar problem - she needed her knees replaced at a very, very young age. She had a hard time getting them - no one would believe she needed them that young. Unfortunately, she's one of those people who hates to complain/argue/etc about anything, ever.

message 3760: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I haven't scheduled them yet. Been getting other "monetary" things out of the way (mainly car repair). I think I can swing any copay in the next few months with some extra ins. I bought a year ago. They've needed to be replaced for several tears but i couldn't afford the 20% above Medicare....like I said, life.

I just put $175 on a credit care...retail therapy. Bought some gaming stuff I couldn't afford. Oh well, back to my book.

Thanks.

I thought I was the only one wearing military helmets in public, but I met a skateboarder with a NVA pith helmet today. I also own a NVA pith helmet, but that one even had the insignia attached. What a lucky guy!

I do that, too.

I have no clue how painful your knees are but since I'm perpetually injured, I understand a tiny bit about the lack of mobility. It builds up a lot of frustration (for me) and a bit of anger as well as a sense of... IDK. It just makes me unhappy.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I didn't really need it, but I picked up a Kindle Voyage to replace my Paperwhite on Prime Day (It was on sale for $50 off so I convinced myself I had no choice but to take advantage). So far, I love it! My Paperwhite was amazing, I could have lived happily with it forever, but it's also amazing how significant an ounce or two of weight difference feels when I'm laying in bed reading. Between that and the slightly faster refresh rate when I turn pages, it just feels nice and new and improved. I'm happy with my purchase. My husband is totes jelly, but oh well. He can buy his own!

message 3765: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I became a Kindle Voyage owner too on Prime Day. It's my first Kindle and e-ink reader, actually. I like it. Still getting used to it though. Hopefully, I can give it a test run on the beach soon. I brought it with the hopes of taking it with me on honeymoon to Hawaii. I hate that I can't use my Nook on the beach.

The iron gate shuts behind me in a rattling clap of thunder and I'm thrust into the very maw of the beast - lawyers with veiled and passive-aggressive threats, doctors pontificating sagely on subjects they're completely ignorant of, and a legion of engineers and programmers lost in the ironmongery of their own overcomplications. At first I thought this was a diagram to somehow turn a robe or shirt into a scimitar - I've got to say I was stoked. Silver lining, though; now I have a new project in the vein of clothing-based weaponry.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I find it pretty sad that I know more about FMLA / maternity leave than my HR department does. I just had a meeting with them to get all of my paperwork. For shits and giggles I asked some hypothetical questions, in part to drive my agenda to get people to realize what a shitty position new mothers / fathers are in with the current laws.

So I asked... If I were put on bed rest 6 weeks before I delivered, would that eat into my FMLA 12 weeks? I know the answer is yes... And they correctly answer yes, but then point out that that's just the law. 12 weeks is the federal law, there is nothing they can do. Wrong.. 12 weeks is the bare minimum your job is protected under federal law if you are off for family or medical related leave. It has nothing to do with getting paid, FMLA is 12 weeks unpaid. Any pay comes from either your companies benefits (short term disability, specific maternity benefits, etc). Any company can offer more out of their own pocket. They could offer 6 months at 100% pay standard with your job protected when you come back, or they could offer 6 months unpaid with your job protected. They could choose to exempt bed rest from time off calculation and guarantee 12 weeks unpaid with job protected after birth. As long as a your job is protected for 12 weeks around the event, they comply with FMLA.

Anyway, I said all of this, and just sort of got a blank look. Which is fine, whatever, I don't foresee needing bed rest and I'm 3 weeks away from baby land. It's just the principle of the thing.. I feel like someone assigned to explain to me my maternity benefits should know what they are talking about, and not just fall back on "that's the law, that's all we can give you". No. Not that I think I'd loose my job if I decided I wanted more unpaid time off, I'm fairly certain they'd always have a place for me after 15 years here.. But not everyone is so lucky. Really makes me feel for women who get put on early bed rest and then have to leave their newborn after a few short weeks or risk not having a job to come back to. Not to even mention parents who adopt newborns, and get no time at all guaranteed with them. Or men, who get nothing ever. But that's cool, whatever, men don't need to bond with their babies, of course not.

Bah. It just makes me so mad. The system is broken. I hate it.

message 3778: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I understand.

And that sucks. IDK why the bare min is all companies want to give you. Plus most don't have paternal leave. Ugh.

message 3779: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) My company has paternal leave. One of my co-workers got 6 weeks off when his wife had their 3rd child earlier this year. :)

That would be nice. My husband doesn't get anything, but luckily he has a lot of annual leave accrued so he can take a few weeks off. Not 6, but 2 right away and then maybe a few when I go back to work.

Some companies are assholes. When Wesley was in the NICU the majority of the moms I met there got fired or forced out. My company granted me an unpaid 4 month extended leave with job protection. Which is so gracious since me not being there is a huge burden on my department. So I was able to be with Wesley all day every day while he was in the hospital and when he got out (early yay!) I still got 12 weeks maternity leave. I'm due back August 26th. Crazy couple of months.

You know what I hate most? That I see this and think "wow, that's awesome!" But it's really not awesome at all, especially when compared with pretty much every other country ever where you would have gotten the time before paid (or at least partially paid), and then 6 or more months afterward paid as well.

message 3783: by Felina (new)

Felina Yes. Our maternity/paternity leaves in this country are atrocious. But our healthcare system is also terrible so basically in America you can never get sick for any reason ever or you'll lose your job or go bankrupt.

message 3784: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Truth.

message 3785: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes The human body is an amazing thing. Birth is really quite spectacular. But it just seems like such a terribly unevolutionary advantage for milk to come in 2 to 3 days after birth. Seriously. What is adaptive about a screaming baby for two days?

message 3786: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments But the baby doesn't need the milk until 2-3 days after birth. Something about a calorie buildup they have from the womb. So it comes in right when they need it! Plus that gives them time to get used to nursing before the bar opens.

message 3787: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I didn't know that.

message 3788: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments MrsJoseph wrote: "I didn't know that."

Yeah, I didn't until recently either. I was reading up on nursing and what that really means for alcohol and caffeine consumption (because I want a damn beer and some coffee!) and I came across that information.

message 3789: by Felina (new)

Felina You know what makes no sense for an evolutionary standpoint, the fact that the female body needs estrogen to heal itself after giving birth however estrogen directly negatively effects milk production. So when breast feeding your estrogen is very low while prolactin is high. Seems like the female body would have worked that out by now.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Since yesterday marked exactly one week until I get to meet my baby boy, I wanted to celebrate by doing something different. Screw facebook posts or belly pics, I decided to sprain my ankle. And! I even decided to take it one step further.. A lot of people like to sprain their ankles while doing something active; running, playing sports, even just walking. I decided to sprain mine by standing up (at work!).

Yep.

So yesterday afternoon I stood up to go to the bathroom for the bajillionth time that day. Everything felt normal. Took a step with my left foot... Hmm, that's strange, I don't appear to have a working ankle? Stumbled a couple of times to the side, rolled my stupid useless ankle to the side and heard a pop. I didn't even fall all the way down, I just took a knee. Freaked everyone out because the pregnant lady was collapsing.

It swelled up pretty fast so I got it checked out, just a sprain. I can't take anything for pain or inflammation though, so I just get to slowly walk it off.

So that was fun! Totally not the reason I wanted to go to the hospital yesterday. But I sure know how to make a scene! :-P

message 3792: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yikes, that sucks Dawn! I think your office should provide you with a minion who just rolls you around the building in your chair until your week is up (because I'm assuming that taking time off is a no-go right now.) Or is there any possibility of working remotely?

message 3793: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Nah, gotta be here. It doesn't hurt too badly today though, I'll be fine. My other pregnancy aches and pains add up to much worse than the ankle, so it's just another drop in the bucket :-P

message 3797: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Minion it is then. I think that you should be able to choose who it is. Maybe the person who annoys you the most every day. You get to order them around and make them stop what they are doing every 3 minutes to take you to pee, and everyone wins! (Read: You win.)
