Series Read: The Dresden Files - Jim Butcher
My experience with Storm Front was perhaps slightly different to a lot of other peoples' in that I had James Masters reading it to me on audio book. This was my first time 'reading' an audio book and I remember I only did it because someone said to me that James Masters was the reader. And who can say no to James Masters? (Certainly not me!)
Storm Front also came with the disclaimer that this wasn't the best book in the series. In fact, it was pretty much the least best book in the series, as I was guaranteed that every book in this series just kept getting better and better. Okay, I thought to myself. I'll play.
But I wasn't wowed. It wasn't boring, but there wasn't anything that really made it stand it out as anything special except for James Masters' tone when reading for Bob. :D
So it was a while before I read Fool Moon, again with audio book (James Masters!!), and a while till I half audio listened then actually picked up a physical book of Grave Peril (#3).
But I gotta say, I'm back to audio book for Summer Knight, and I really think this is the best one yet. If it keeps getting better from here... well, I'm glad I'll have a bunch of you to squee with!
I read once that #4 was the best of the first four and that #5 made us think that maybe #4 was as mistake. However, if after #6 you are able to put the book down, the series was just not for you.My experience so far is that the books are so intense, so action packed that I need breaks in between books.
Is like the Iron Druid series. Once you try the audio, paper doesn't sounds so good. And I simple loooooove Bob's voice as Nicole referred. Plus, James Masters is Dresden... I listened to Carnival of Souls, because it was narrated by him and had to switch to the kindle version because I was always expecting to hear "fuego!" and that "smart move Harry" that I like so much.
I've read book one, and will do my best to catch up asap.I really liked the first book, so if it's the LEAST of the series, then I know I'll love the rest!
Oh, and just because I'm a huge Buffy fan, and feel the need: It's James MaRsters, not Masters. :)
Oh, Spike, how I adore thee!!!

I know it is Marsters, but I usually misspell it :(
Although I have a confession to make. I didn't know he was Spike till I finished with Grave Peril.
*runs away to safety*
Nicole & Sonia - Thank you for the audio tips. :) I just started listening to audios and I'm always looking for good audio books. Plus, I have both those series in my TBR already. I really want to join this series read, but I'm not sure when I'll have time to catch up. Unfortunately, I have almost no time to read, but a serious BR addiction. lol I'll probably just catch up when I have the chance and jump on the appropriate threads as I go.
Just so I'm prepared - Do these books stand alone or do they build off eachother? Should I be expecting cliffhangers?
As Karen and Sonia, I have the first of the series on my Kindle waiting since March to be read LOL. Maybe due to this buddy read I will be able finally to get to it, although just as Kristie, I have loads of books to read, so it is difficult to state the exact date when I can start :), I'm still interested and try to do it quickly.
The thread is open to comments whenever we get to read the books. No pressure whatsoever.Just keep spoilers under spoiler tags and books identified so we don't get lost and go for it!
I'll be waiting for Steven to start
, and then we both will join Nicole for
. He's still on Fool Moon - book #2, so plenty of time to catch up.

Awwwww
I'm actually reading this series as a "buddy read" each month in another group and loving it. It is a wonderful series to do together because each person catches something someone else missed. I'm getting ready to start #7
this September. I find I look forward to this one each and every month.♥Harry♥
They did a TV Show once. But it was so poorly adapted that it was canceled. At least in Portugal we only got one season - I didn't watch it, it was aired too late for me at the time.
I just recently watched that whole TV series, which lasted only a year (2007). Yes, it is confusing because they pulled ideas from various books, mixed them together and out of chronological order.
I've had this series recommended to me before but had never gotten around to reading them. If I can I'll join in.
I watched the TV series a few years ago, and I found it confusing a bit and not very well developed, but I haven't read the book, so most probably I still judged it less harshly than others who were familiar with the series. I'm even more curious about the book now :)
I love this series, and yes you have to read them in order. They absolutely build on each other.I also enjoy reading them, because I have visited Chicago and Butcher uses real Chicago landmarks in the books.

Kristie, like others have said Butcher isn't bad about cliff hangers. However, the characters build and grow and change throughout the series, which make reading the books out of order tough.
Thank you April and Ashley Marie. That is good to know. I intend to read them in order. I have difficulty reading books out of order or skipping books in a series, but was still curious. I'm glad there aren't a lot of cliffhangers. I like when I want to read the next book in a series because the previous one was so good, not because the author left me hanging. You can still want to know what happens to the characters without cliffhangers.

I can't get the audio through my library *pout*
(Btw can you beleive that Spike is now 51 years old!!)
I am finishing Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) atm and then I only have 2 other books scheduled in September, so I should be able to get to this one with all of you lovely people ;)

I recently read Wool, Karen, and was a little disappointed. I'd heard so much hype. I thought it was good, but not *that* good. What are your thoughts on it?
Loved part 1 and I thought #2 was great too. As the parts have gotten longer it hasn't held quite as much interest for me, but I'm still enjoying it. Just getting to the end of the last part now :)
Karen wrote: "Loved part 1 and I thought #2 was great too. As the parts have gotten longer it hasn't held quite as much interest for me, but I'm still enjoying it. Just getting to the end of the last part now :)"Honestly, that was my reaction, too. I lost interest in the longer sections.

Sonia, it's funny that you ask if it's like the Iron Druid series, since I got onto the Iron Druid series because it was supposed to be like Dresden. XD But the two are similar without being the same: Both very enjoyable. I'm only up to the third book in that one, but there are more books in the Dresden universe, so I don't mind being ahead in that. Especially now with all this!
How did you find Carnival of Souls (with or without James, I mean the story, really). I absolutely love everything else I've read of Melissa Marr, just haven't gotten to CoS yet.
@Steven, I really like the titles for exactly the same reason. I like guessing what the book's going to be about. Summer Knight is really good when you get to the 'Aha!' moment on realising why that's the title.
I'm doing the same buddy read of the series with Lisa Kay and agree that the series really improved from book #4. Looking forward to
this month and I'm also listening. James Marsters really sucks you in with his narration.
Nicole wrote: "Out of curiosity, Logan, which group is it that you and Lisa Kay are reading this in?"Its the Romance Lovers for the Challenge Impaired group - here's the link to our latest Buddy Read of Dead Beat - we haven't started yet.

It was my first Melissa Marr book, so I didn't know anything about her writing style. I think CoS concept was amazing. Loved the world building and characters. However, I though the delivery wasn't as successful as the creation.
I wanted to like it better than I did. I will read the second one, since I want to know what will happen and I wasn't that thrilled by how it ended. Actually the last 20% of the book make me want to hit something or somebody.
It has some issues and happenings that really affected me and the way I saw some characters. She made me dislike a otherwise totally likable character and I'm not sure if I can forgive her for that.
Sonia might have converted me to audio books... well at least to this series on audio books. James Marsters, your voice is so sexy!!! I've "finished reading" three chapters thus far. :)

Since some of us, me included, are a little behind, we're going to use this thread to discuss books #1 to #4, as well as to "subscribe" to the series read. After that, each book will have its own thread.

(view spoiler)[I was surprised to know how many types of werewolves there is. I'm wonder who's behind the attacks and what type or types of werewolves will be appearing on the book. Something nasty, I bet (hide spoiler)]
