I'm also reading All the Birds, Singing at the moment ( for the Winter Challenge). It is quite strange how one story line is going forward and the other is going backwards. I'm hoping it will all make sense at the end!

My reserve of this is just in at the library so I will be reading it in the not-too-distant future too.

I took a few hours out of the day to read a book my son wanted me to read Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner. And I was very pleasantly surprised.

I was just strolling along with my dog this morning when my audio book suddenly and unexpectedly finished. So here's my review of Winter's Heart by Robert Jordan

Carolyn | 9838 comments Leonie wrote: "I'm currently reading Downbelow Station by C.J. Cherryh - started slowly, but now I'm really excited to see where it finishes."

I've also started reading Downbelow Station Leonie as I haven't been reading much SF lately so thought I'd try and do one of the SF groups monthly reads now and again (plus I'm a big fan of the Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorskogian series that they just finished).

I'd heard good things about the series and the author, but I'm finding the writing quite dense and economical and it's going quite slowly at the moment. I'm about 1/3 of the way through so I hope it picks up soon.

Yes, I'm also reading for an SF group monthly read. I found that it picked up quite a lot from about the point you're at. I'm almost finished now, and am really enjoying it. I do wonder where it's going though. I'm sort of at that point on my kindle where I'm wondering if the author will have enough pages left to wrap it all up.

Sounds like it's worth reading on a bit further. I am curious about Talley and what he's hiding or hiding from and I would like to see a bit more of the world downbelow and find out what happens to Pell. Just hope the pace picks up a bit more.

Sally906 | 87 comments I've just finished Good Tidings by Terri Reid and loved it. Have downloaded the next one in the series Never Forgotten already. There looks like there are already 13 in the series so will be working my way through them for a while :)

I am currently reading The Puzzle Ring by Kate Forsyth which I am enjoying so far is a children's fantasy adventure and Summer in Tuscany by Elizabeth Adler which is hmmm hard to describe - sort of hens lit - older woman sorting out her life by finding a new man where she least expects to find one. Is a light read but not engrossing me.

It's about nurses in WWI sent to the Dardanelles on hospital ships. It should fit in nicely with the series on WWI nurses, Anzac Girls, starting on ABC 1 next month.

Hmmm .. I'll have to go and check (it's a paperback at home). Can't say it's bothered me if it doesn't. I am enjoying it so far, about 1/4 way through. The details of what drugs and medical treatment was available back then makes you realise how primitive it all was and how ill equipped we were to deal with war casualties.

Oh that's good Carolyn:) I was in a room full of people when he was here for an author signing for it when it was newly released, and one of the questions was "why don't you have speech marks?" Quite a number of people said they found it difficult to read for this reason.

You are right Brenda - there are surprisingly no speech marks in The Daughters of Mars!

I'm guessing that I didn't notice because so far it's been obvious when someone is speaking. Speech always starts on a new line and with a name or personal pronoun and verb (said, asked, suggested, commented etc) before or after. Sometimes rapid exchanges of speech will just have a name and colon but it's still really obvious that it's speech.

Not at all Brenda. I think I've probably read more difficult writing styles than that where it's not always clear who's speaking or whether someone is just thinking to themselves.

Mish | 3601 comments @ Carolyn & Brenda,

It's one of my pet peeves when they don't have speech marks, and will avoid reading those kind of books. I find that I'm concentrating more on 'who saying what' that becomes too much hard work and I completely lose interest in the plot.

I'm glad that its working for you though Carolyn :)
