Although the speech marks are missing, the author always states who's speaking so I haven't found that I've had to stop and figure it out and haven't been confused at all.

I can see though that if it did really bother or confuse me it would be really annoying!

It's actually one of the issues I've had trying to read The Burial. All the dialogue is in italics, which does weird things to the words inside my head.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Working through the 900-page monstrosity that is Perdido Street Station. This really is less of a novel more of an explosion of creativity.

Yes, John Wayne and then there was a more recent version with Jeff Bridges in it and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie which was also very good and quite true to the book.

Sally Howes | 223 comments I recently finished Gossip from the Forest by Sara Maitland, a fascinating and beautiful book about the role forests have played in fairytales. It was an absolute joy to read, I highly recommend it for anyone interested in folklore and storytelling. I don't do this very often, but I'm giving this book 5★s.

Give in to it, Vicki, it's useless trying to resist the lure of books to read. Throw caution to the winds, abandon all reason and just add, add, add to your tbr. lol!

message 9728: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I am currently reading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver (well, listening to it as I crochet - only 1 hour to go), Inkspell by Cornelia Funke as an e-book (for my YA read for the winter challenge - didn't actually realise when I picked it just how long it is - my e-book version is over 900 pages with a "normal" print size!) and Singled Out: How Two Million Women Survived Without Men After the First World War by Virginia Nicholson which I was enjoying but have put aside to focus on Inkspell, which needs to go back soon, and the audiobook because I'm trying to finish the gift I'm crocheting for a friend!

message 9729: by Neil (new)

Neil Haines | 69 comments I'm still reading the wonderful Shantaram, 7 months and just over halfway through. This book is one of the best I've read, makes you want to go on holidays to India. I thought I might have finished the book by now, but a 1st little addition to the family 4 months ago in Oscar takes up a lot of spare time. I thought a good book was all we needed, but a baby is just exciting! Reset my goal to finish Shantaram before I start reading Oscar his own books.

I like the sound of Singled Out: How Two Million Women Survived Without Men After the First World War by Virginia Nicholson sounds very interesting Kathryn, I have ticked it to read.
I think few people give any thought to those many and varied lasting effects that the war/s had on people...especially women.

Hope you enjoy, Julie - it's quite a dense book - well, my copy is, anyway - with small print and smallish margins, so it's kind of slow going. But it is interesting - so sad for the women who wanted to get married and have a family, sad that this is all many women of the time had been "trained" to do and they were then unable to fulfil what they felt was their purpose in life, sad that society showed a lack of understanding with these women referred to as "surplus", sad that unescorted women out at night would be suspected of being prostitutes, and so on...
