Sally906 | 87 comments I am working on my July horror challenge - started reading Cat Out of Hell by Lynne Trussover the weekend, then realised it was classed as comic horror so put it down and started it again yesterday for the challenge. Is delightfully creepy :)

Also reading Hollow City by Ransom Riggs which opens:
"…We rowed out through the harbour, past bobbing boats weeping rust from their seams, past juries of silent seabirds roosting atop the barnacled remains of sunken docks, past fishermen who lowered their nets to stare frozenly as we slipped by, uncertain whether we were real or imagined; a procession of waterborne ghosts, or ghosts soon to be. We were ten children and one bird in three small and unsteady boats, rowing with quiet intensity straight out to sea, the only safe harbor for miles receding quickly behind us, craggy and magical in the blue-gold light of dawn…."

Isn't that a great opening line?

I bought that recently Bette, from BD without realising how BIG it was. It's MASSIVE! My copy is sitting on top of my bookcase glowering at me in all it's formidable massiveness. I think you're very brave starting it, but I'm sure it will be worth the effort :)

My current read is over 1000 pages and has taken me over three days so far and there are still 150 pages to go! As well as lots of pages some books have more words to a page than others!!!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Everyone who commented re: The Sunne in Splendour; I love a big fat book, the bigger, the better. Except maybe that they are heavy sitting on my knee!

@Sally Yes, this is a book with very small print so there is oodles more words by page; it's not a book to be skimmed.

I've been looking for another good historical fiction (well, British monarchy historical fiction!) author while I wait for The King's Curse. I got all excited when I read your reviews of Sharon Kay Penman, Bette, but then was a very sad panda when I found out her books are not available on Kindle! I'm pretty (um, very) addicted to my Kindle now and really have a lot of trouble handling big, heavy 'dead tree' books. So, can you or anyone else recommend another historical fiction author whose books are available for Kindle? :-)

I'm just finishing The Well of Ascension and will be straight onto the last book in the Mistborn trilogy, The Hero of Ages after that. Once I'm done with this (excellent) trilogy, I'll be pouncing straight onto the Stormlight Archive, due in large part to your praise for it, Phrynne :-) Plus I kind of have a celebrity crush on Brandon Sanderson at the moment ... ;-)

In the spirit of reciprocation, have you read The Name of the Wind, Phrynne? I'm guessing you probably have, but if not, RUN, DON'T WALK to get your hands on a copy! That goes for everyone else, too :-) It's by far the best book I've read this year, in any genre. A perfect 10, the first of those I've awarded in a while!

Carolyn | 9837 comments Hi Brenda, I'm in need of a toss of your amazing magic coin.

I've (surprisingly) found two books in my tbr stash that I think fit the genre of 'thriller' for the July challenge and can't decide which one to start with. They both sound equally gruesome!

This House is Haunted by John Boyne or You Are Next by Katia Lief

I have Sally and I have read the sequel. Patrick Rothfuss and Brandon Sanderson are both heroes to me!
Did you know that there is a fourth Mistborn book set decades later? I haven't got around to that one yet.
