Patricia (pjaye) I've almost finished Huntress Moon by Alexandra Sokoloff.
The title is a bit deceptive, it sounds like it might have a paranormal element (which it doesn't) It's about FBI agents searching for a serial killer mystery and it's excellent.

I loved that one too David. So much so that I bought the second one straight after I'd finished it but haven't got round to reading it yet.

That one has been on my TBR list forever. I think Michael recommended it once when I was commenting about how much I enjoy the Dresden Files. I must get around to reading it:)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I finished The Wives of Henry VIII by Antonia Fraser; a brilliant non-fiction novel. Review might follow.

I've started Lionheart by Sharon Kay Penman.

Picked up The Light Behind the Window by Lucinda Riley. It's been on my shelf for a while.

message 9360: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) I'm reading a few books at the moment including Mr. Mercedes and just_a_girl but they have all been put aside for one book Grasshopper Jungle.

I didn't expect to enjoy a YA novel so much but this is amazing and makes me wonder why more YA novels can't explore important issues like this one.

No, it feels kind of wrong to give a well-written book one star just because it didn't suit my tastes. The book is good; it's not it's fault I hate sad endings! Yet because I didn't like it I can't give it the 4 or 5 stars the writing deserves either. It seemed easier just to leave it blank!

Fair enough, I understand and admire you for not rating it one star. A huge amount of others do! Someone rated a book which hadn't yet been released as a one star as they didn't like the cover!!

message 9382: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 87 comments Oh this subject gets me on my soapbox - I hate when they give a book one star before it has been released because they don't like the cover or the title. Alternatively when they give it 5 stars because they love the author and know they will love book.

Read it then give it an honest star on your opinion - whether one or five stars doesn't matter but at least read it!!

Tango | 290 comments I get really annoyed when people don't finish a book (sometimes by a long shot) and still give it one star. I think that you are not qualified to give it a rating unless you read the whole thing.

Tis is my current read too - except I have the audiobook version. About 25% through and loving it...it's already made me laugh out loud several times.
I think A.J. and I have similar thoughts and tastes in books...esp the no dystopian and no vampire thing.

Yes Patricia, The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry is the Australian published version and The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is the O/seas version.
Most readers who bought from Amazon would be reading the latter.

The US version is a A Storied Life and the one available in Australia which I think might be published in the UK is The Collected Works.
I discovered that tonight when searching for it in my library, as I was feeling like the only person around here who wasn't reading it!

I agree to a point - at least they have tried to read the book and for whatever reason it didn't sustain their interest. So a 1 star is probably a good reflection of how they felt - its not as though they didn't even try to read it. A single star means they really really didn't like it. I know I do not finish books if I am not happy with them.

Mind you I then quietly delete the book from my shelf and don't give it any score - which is probably not good either as I am not giving a true reflection of my thoughts.

My lowest score is 2 stars - but I can guarentee i have read the book through to the bitter end :)

message 9396: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 87 comments I have just picked up another review book - The Hero by Robyn Carr. This is about a young woman who has escaped a cult with her daughter and a widower and his son who have both arrived in a small seaside town at the same time - you just know these two are going to be an item - and so settling in to see how it develops.

I have 3 ARCs that I have to finish by the end of next week - is doable but have to put all others out of the way :)

Vicki Tyley (vickityley) | 1732 comments I've read more books (19) in the past month than I’ve read all year. It does help that I had no phone, no internet and a wood fire to curl up in front of. I won't bore you with them all, but here's some of my favs:

Dark Horse by Honey Brown Brilliant Australian suspense -- my favourite read of the year so far.
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Death on Demand by Paul Thomas
Kiwi author Paul Thomas is a Ned Kelly award winner and it's not hard to see why. Warning: If you're offended by strong language don't read this/
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Kult by Shaun Jeffrey
This one had been on my to-read list since 2011. I think the title and the horror label put me off, but it's more dark thriller than horror and a great story.
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Murder in Suburbia: Disturbing Stories from Australia's Dark Heart by Emily Webb
Australian true crime and highly recommended.
