Jenni Boyd I am currently reading Half Moon Bay, by Helene Young, thanks to a recommendation from Brenda, which I am enjoying so far and if she thinks 'The Husband's Secret' is worth 5stars, I think I will have to put that on my list of things to read.

Thanks Brenda, it's certainly proving to be a popular book. It would have to be one of the most regularly mentioned books here for some time.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3567 comments I've just finished Libriomancer by Jim C. Hines as one of my pre-Continuum Convention reads. I'm trying to make sure I've read at least one work by each of my fellow panellists if they're a writer.

I'll review it later, but I really enjoyed it. Fancy inventing a magic system, where the 'libriomancer' can reach inside a book and pull out something useful! (Or dangerous and visit terror and destruction on the whole world...) The perfect magic system for obsessive readers!

I generally love Kate Forsyth's stuff, but unlikeable characters could be a real turn off for me.

Although I love JK Rowling's style of writing, when I read The Casual Vacancy I struggled with the characters - particularly staying interested enough in them to keep reading - and had to rate it down. It's really difficult when that happens, but it means I won't re-read it, and I only give four stars and up to books I'll re-read.

Sally Howes | 223 comments I'm also reading The Chemistry of Tears at the moment, partly because it's on my AA Challenge list and partly because it's going to be on The Book Club. About 25% in and can tell it's going to be a struggle :-( I also find Peter Carey quite hit and miss - the only book of his that I've LOVED so far is a little-discussed one called The Unusual Life Of Tristan Smith. It's a kind of fantastical allegory of American 'cultural imperialism' in relation to Australia, and also has a lot to say about the shallowness of celebrity culture and the way we treat the monstrous or 'the other'. I've never read another book quite like it, and highly recommend it.

By the way, I am SURE The Chemistry of Tears was on The Book Club a few years ago - that's where I first heard about it. Did I just imagine that? If not, why would they be featuring it again? Either way, I can't wait to hear Marieke's views on it ;-)

Just finished The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. A lovely book with a rather over imaginative title. It is actually an excellent story about slavery and the fight for abolition in 19th century Charleston.
