Yes Brenda I do remember reading your review a while ago but I'm too scared now to have another look at it as it contains spoilers. I don't remember what they were thankfully. I do recall wanting to read it though after seeing your review.

so far at around 120 pages in .. I really like it! Its very compelling and there are moments where the writing is just brilliant. Again (like in the yearning) I would say that the subject matter pushes boundaries for me .. namely in this one, blatant infidelity (this is not a spoiler as it's in the book blurb) .. but the psychological processes of hubby and wife in regard to this are just fascinating.

Marina Finlayson | 285 comments I'm rereading The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon. She has an autistic child herself, and this book, narrated by an autistic man, gives a fascinating insight into the mind of an autistic person. It's set in the near future, when a "cure" is possible, and deals with important questions of identity. What makes us who we are? If we change something fundamental to our personality, are we still the same person?

It's an amazing book. I was raving about it to my daughter, trying to get her to read it, and ended up talking myself into it instead!

That looks fascinating Marina. I'm surprised that I haven't heard of it, as it's been around a while.

message 9210: by Marina (new)

Marina Finlayson | 285 comments I highly recommend it, Valerie (as you can probably guess from my previous comment!). Perhaps you haven't heard of it because it's sci fi, and they don't tend to get the same amount of press as mainstream fiction. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which also has an autistic narrator, got a lot more publicity when it came out.

But really, the only science fictional element is that it's set just far enough in the future that a cure's been discovered. It's a very "real" story otherwise, and the writing is amazing. You really get a feel for what it must be like for an autistic person struggling to make sense of the so-called "normals".

My review for Standoff by Aussie author David Rollins 4s

Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 9214: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 87 comments I am half way through The Garden of Darkness by Gillian Murray Kendall - and it is very, very dark. I know you would expect YA dystopian to be dark but this is ... DARK dark. I started reading it last night in bed and had to stop reading and pick up a light and fluffy to chase the gloom away.

Having said that it is a compelling read and I have to know what happens in the end!

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments I figured my domestic duties were seriously impeding my reading opportunities, so I borrowed/downloaded the audio version of The Reunion by Amy Silver from my library and spent a lovely day in the kitchen listening to it :D
It's narrated by Jaunita McMahon who does a very good job of it.
(The above ISBN is the book version)

After reading Being Jade which was excellent but confronting, I really just needed something light.. So I picked up Beauty Queens by Libba Bray which is a crackup satire of the beauty pageant culture among other things. Just what I needed (and I love the cover!)

Not certain Michael but I think it was released with a different title in different countries...although mine was an arc so maybe the name and cover was changed before publication?
A rose by any other name ;)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I'm reading Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie;so far, it is brilliant.

I've previously read her Half of a Yellow Sun which bowled me over.

There are two titles Michael - there is the USA title and then one for the rest of the world - depends on what version you have read. Neither usage is wrong - maybe the blurb for each should refer to the other title.

Sally906 | 87 comments I finished The Garden of Darkness yesterday afternoon - what a harrowing read - so dark and quite explicitly gory in parts. Haven't done my review yet.

I am now reading something lighter A Ring Through Time by Felicity Pulman - still YA but not as torrid to read :)

Maybe good for the book clubs it's intended for though.

Having never read anything by him before, and finding a couple (a few) sitting on my kindle which fitted into the Winter challenge, it seemed a good time to start! But both that I've read I've enjoyed, so you never know;)
