Alienne I can't believe 'Keeping You A Secret' isn't on here! *adds*

message 2: by Jess (new)

Jess I wish there were more books :( I don't really know any heh.

message 3: by Anna (new)

Anna Everyone should check out feministqueerlibrary and add to friends! My girlfriend and I are trying to get together a bigger, more comprehensive list of books in the LGBT genre, fiction and non, adult, YA, children's, etc. So if you have any books to add after viewing the list, you definitely should send a message suggestion!

message 4: by Briar Rose (new)

Briar Rose I don't think it actually counts as lesbian fiction, but The Telling, by Ursula Le Guin is a great sci-fi novel with a lesbian main character.

message 5: by Baxter Clare (new)

Baxter Clare Trautman Check out the latest from Lambda Literary Award nominee, Baxter Clare Trautman. The River Within follows three women whose bonds are strained, reforged, and ultimately strengthened as they struggle to choose between the lives they think they should have and the lives they want.

message 6: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Forbes hmmm, what about the Beebo Brinker series?

message 7: by Xandra (new)

Xandra I recommend Haruki Murakami's Sputnik Sweetheart. It's an unrequited love story, but it's beautiful and full of emotion.

message 8: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Forbes Lesley Gowen is pretty good too

Ulithium The Kendrian Chronicle: Human Zero

By Ulithium

On a planet called Chromast, fifteen year-old Kendra opts out of the daily psychotropic supplements widely consumed in her utopian society. After evading detention for disorderly conduct, she is left to face her bourgeoning sexuality, her mother’s untimely death, and the newfound knowledge that her planet isn’t as harmonious as it seems.

In this science fiction, coming- of- age, LGBT-oriented epic, a new heroine emerges. Kendra embodies the archetypal mystical revolutionary in a new way. She is determined to rescue the love of her life, Lindra, from an abusive center for troubled children, only to come face to face with the price of utopia.

Nancy Did I miss seeing The Dark Side of Venus by Shirley Verel on this list? Can't believe it isn't on here. I remember it well as I went to the trouble of acquiring a hardcover first edition from England-which I still have! Well written and the 2 women end up together. Published in 1960 and I don't believe it has been re-issued but I am researching it now. Google has digitized it but the link seems to not work this morning.

message 16: by Anna (new)

Anna Rose Can anyone recommend any books with a femme couple/pairing? Lately (or all) the F/F books I've read feature a femme woman and an androgynous woman. Would like to discover a femme/femme pairing for once! (preferably historical or a good erotica but I'm not picky as long as it's a good read)

Try "Desert Hearts" aka: Desert of the heart. Years ago I got all my Lesbian books via naiad press... http://www.naiadpress.com/ I read so many I can't remember them all.. I do remember one of my favorites was Kathleen Forest "An emergence of green" Hope this helps and if I think of anything else I will let you know.

message 18: by Anna (new)

Anna Rose thanks Sandra, was there a movie of that? Sure I watched it

message 19: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Forbes Hi Bb, yes there was a movie and the movie was better. I had a hard time getting through the book but that was back in the 80's and I was still just getting into reading. Check out the naiad press link, find what you would like there and then look to buy them somewhere else cheaper ;) Back in the day I used to order from them and they would arrive in the mail in brown paper disguise... those were the years where we could not just but them at any bookstore... was like being a pervert, crazy really. Check out "Travels with Diana Hunter" can't remember the author... that one is more of a players story but I don't remember there being a lot of butch/femme distinction. It's hard to find fem/fem from back in the day because it was an uncommon pairing up back then. I would imagine today there would be more of it but, I just can't seem to recall any off the top of my head... although I did read one not too long ago.. I will look later on my shelf to see if I can find some.

message 22: by Julie (new)

Julie Some people posting on this list clearly don't know the difference between fiction and non-fiction.

message 23: by Nancy (new)

Nancy While this is an older novel it is still a beautifully written story of 59 year old Mrs. Mercedes Medina who unexpectedly falls in love with a 30 year old woman named Lennie who is working in a flower shop.

Iza Moreau Bb wrote: "Can anyone recommend any books with a femme couple/pairing? Lately (or all) the F/F books I've read feature a femme woman and an androgynous woman. Would like to discover a femme/femme pairing for ..."

Try my Small Town Series. The first novel is called The News In Small Towns. It sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

message 25: by Fiery (new)

Fiery Jack No Michelle Tea?!?! That's whack.

message 26: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Written on the Body is not lesbian fiction, the narrator has no defined gender.

Loved and Lost by Stephanie Kusiak - 2 feminine women incredible romance.

message 28: by AJ (new)

AJ Anyone know a good book with a butch pairing? Or at least butch/femme? Like Anna most of what I've read is femme/andro. I've also read quite a bit of femme/femme. Which is fine, but I'd like to read something different.

message 29: by Reina (new)

Reina are any of these books in the adult romance genre or erotica?? just looking for something kinda spicy you know!

message 30: by Nancy (new)

Nancy No Reina, I don't think so but I can suggest taking a look at the lesbian publishers out there like Bella Books, Sapphire books and Bold Strokes books. They all have erotica and romance novels. Have fun!

message 31: by Nancy (last edited Dec 27, 2015 12:39PM) (new)

message 33: by P. (last edited Jun 22, 2016 06:03AM) (new)

P. Industry @Daniel; based on what you've said, Written on the Body has been removed.

If anyone else spots something miscataloged, sing out here in the comments. Sometimes these lists grow a few weeds, and without a librarian literally reading all the books it becomes difficult to manage.

message 34: by P. (new)

P. Industry @Susan: my reasoning was this. Normally books that are gender non-specific are done in that way so one can ascribe it in any one the reader pleases. So although you might read it as lesbian, it is perfectly reasonable (and indeed just as correct) to read it as straight or non-binary.

This list is for explicitly lesbian main characters - therefore Written on the Body would not qualify.

If another librarian is around to check-moderate and come down on one or the other side of the question, I welcome the input.

@P: I love that you are moderating this list and keeping it true to the lists name. I wish all 'List' creators were as conscientious.

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Odd maybe, but I never think of a book as 'gay' or 'lesbian' fiction. To me, it's just a good book. Or not, of course :-)

And how does The Colour (#619) qualify?

An author should never use a Listopia in order to promote his or her own books, and as Tey is the author, even the comment is out of place... As the author was the only voter, I've removed the book from this list.

message 40: by P. (new)

P. Industry Thanks Booklovinglady!

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) P. wrote: "Thanks Booklovinglady!"

You're welcome :-)

message 42: by Hong-Ara (new)

Hong-Ara I doubt that either The Mists of Avalon or the books of the Millinium Series should be included on this list. They are about bisexual/pansexual women, not lesbians and i think this list should either only include books about lesbians or be broader in its inclusion of bi/pan books.

message 43: by P. (new)

P. Industry This is a good comment, and a difficult one; I suspect what most people browsing this list are actually after is a story where the two ladies end up together at the end. I've never read the mists of Avalon, and I only vaguely remember reading "Men Who treat Women Badly"/The Girl With the Dragoon Tattoo. But based on your comment I will remove them.

That´s why this list was confusing to me, because except for these well known books that have low wlw content (Morgaine has lots of lovers over the course of the book and only one is a woman and while Lisbeth has a friend with benifits in Mimmy, romantically, her story revolves more about Mikhael than it does about Mimmy) there books I´ve read from it center around women who are exclusivel attracted to women, that is the reasons while I added none of those books with a bi-protag that had two women ending together. Thanks for looking into this.

message 45: by P. (new)

P. Industry No - thank you for posting up and saying something. This list has always been difficult - both in the grey spaces, and the less grey. If you spot anything else, let me know.

Lori What is Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild doing on this list?

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Eileen wrote: "What is Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild doing on this list?"

Into the Wild has been deleted. Next time, do mention the number a book in on in a list, as it took me a while to find it...

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Rayna wrote: "Fun Home has made it to #10 without anyone pointing out that it is a memoir, not fiction."

As it is not fiction (a novel), Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic has been removed.

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) I've mentioned it before and it has been quite a while since I've read it, I admit, but I don't remember The Colour (#723) as being Lesbian Fiction. Can someone enlighten me please? Thanks.
