This is a list of the 100 lowest-rated works of prose fiction of at least 100 pages and 100 ratings on Goodreads.
The current highest average rating is 2.87. Please do not add books with a higher rating than this.
Are they bad books? Most of them, probably, but some might simply have rubbed GR users the wrong way.
Feel free to vote for your favorite worst-rated books. It's impossible to keep such a list in a specific order once multiple people vote, so no such attempt will be made. To see the true order starting with the absolute lowest rated, check the list creator's votes: https://www.goodreads.com/list/user_v... (I'll try to keep it updated at least every few months).
CRITERIA:
-Novel or novella: fiction of at least 100 pages in any format. No short stories collections or anthologies, poetry, graphic works, or non-fiction.
-# of GR ratings: minimum 100.
-Language: any.
-Sequels allowed? Yes. If multiple series entries otherwise qualify, they can all appear on the list.
-Does it have to have been released? Nah, if the pre-release buzz is so negative that it gets review bombed even before publication, it still belongs here. After all, this is a list of what Goodreads users hate the most, and not technically a list of the actual worst books, although there is definitely some crossover.

Hey Werefox, thanks for the additions! It's going to take some work to get the list to the correct number/actual lowest-rated and I appreciate the assist.

Unfortunately, the 'sort by rating' function on my shelves isn't working properly right now (using it just seems to list my books in a random order), so I have to basically go by what I remember having particularly low ratings.

The initial list is complete! Some statistics and observations:*The lowest rating is 1.11, for Three Rivers. Wow, the author really pissed people off. It even ranks lower than the book by the guy who says he's Hitler reincarnated. You could say, that makes Three Rivers worse than Hitler.
*There are 4 different Pride and Prejudice spinoffs on this list. Austen readers really don't want their shit messed with.
*There are 15 books with ratings below 2.00.
*3 authors have two books each on this list: Onision, Dylan Saccoccio, and Emma Tennant.
*3 books were published before 1990. The oldest is Pamela (1740).
*4 books were published in or after 2020
*The newest book isn't even published yet: The Narrow Road Between Desires, rated a miserable 2.10 at the moment, is coming out in November 2023. Patrick Rothfuss clearly has a lot of disgruntled fans.
EDIT: another author with two books on this list: Michael Gerber.

Added Beautiful Broken Girls (2.71, 889 ratings) and Cheer Up, Mr. Widdicombe (2.83, 500+ ratings). To remove at next clean-up, no longer in bottom 100:
Uninvited
iDrakula
Nothing
There Is No Dog
Murder on the Eiffel Tower

Patrick Rothfuss clearly has a lot of disgruntled fans. It's coming out in Nov 2023? How do you know that? Doors of Stone is supposedly 827 pages of hardcover and published by Gollancz, according to GoodReads, yet we know this book will never be written.
Also, even if NRBD does get released, it's will just be Lightning Tree with a few tiny additions (according to the author), so it won't even be a new book, just a cash grab. Rothfuss deserves the backlash he gets.

This is according to the publisher, DAW books, it's scheduled for release on November 14, 2023. Of course the release could be delayed like any book, but barring printing or shipping complications the publisher has the finished product in hand. Given Rothfuss' history, I'm confident there's no way the publisher would have announced it without receiving the completed manuscript. As to how well it is received, we'll see how his history affects sales.
The Narrow Road Between Desires recovered after release; from a low of 2.09 it has sailed off this list with a rating in the high 3s at the moment. Hope shines eternal.

It's shameful.
I added The Forensic Certified Public Accountant and the Cremated 64-Squares Financial Statements, that was definitely an oversight. I also added the list's first threepeat with the Swap Club series. It earned its spot through obvious book-unrelated review bombing, but this list doesn't judge the reason, just the score.
Heaven's Demons disqualified for this list after Goodreads removed 143 ratings in November 2023 (I just noticed this today). I'm curious to know if they were pro-Hitler or anti-Hitler ratings.
Removed the Swap Club books, ratings over 3 despite heavy review bombing. They're locked by Goodreads so no further score changes expected now.
I had to remove The Crystal Keepers for too few ratings; GR must have removed some. If anyone is curious, the book here with the most ratings is One Night at the Call Center with >60,000 ratings.
We have a new entry! The Age of Scorpius, published June 27, 2025, immediately slammed with genuine 1-star reviews from people who honestly wanted to like it, that's how terrible the writing was. At a 1.71 average star rating, it jumps ahead of 2 out 3 Onision books on this list. That's quite an achievement. I'm just elated to see a new terrible book without AI content these days.
A newly-discovered addition to the list: Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw. A modern traditionally published entry, with almost 49,000 ratings (surpassed in this only by One Night at the Call Center). A brutal score. It comes onto the list at #52.
