Lobstergirl I actually didn't think Sex and the City was all that horrible. The book was better than the TV show. It was okay as a beach read.

message 2: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl And Collections of Nothing was pretty good. Four stars from me.

message 3: by Miquixote (new)

Miquixote apparently you are in the minority though! lol...any thoughts on why people hate those 2 books?

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Yes -- this is one of those lists where people are bound to disagree whether the rating/inclusion is correct. For once, I'm only voting for books where I agree with the low rating ...

message 5: by Miquixote (new)

Miquixote I just thought it would be interesting to see what kind of books get low ratings overall, not really trying to trash anything or anyone. It is however a wondrous thing to see that people can still disagree, even against overwhelming odds!

message 6: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I'm actually amazed the number of books in this category is so tiny. People on GR definitely rate up a lot of the time.

I'm voting for all the books that fit the category that I've read, whether I agree with the low rating or not. Only six so far! Who knew I'd read so much Candace Bushnell??

Lobstergirl Miquixote wrote: "apparently you are in the minority though! lol...any thoughts on why people hate those 2 books?"

I bet half the people who rated Sex and the City didn't even read it....they watched the TV show.

Collections of Nothing is an intelligent book, but a weird one. I'm actually surprised more people didn't like it. A lot of reviewers liked the subject matter but thought the writing style was self-indulgent.

message 8: by Miquixote (new)

Miquixote seem to be 2 books at opposite ends of the intellectual scale... am I wrong?

message 9: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl No. Collections of Nothing was published by a university press, and was reviewed by the New Yorker (that's how I heard about it) and the NYT!

message 10: by Miquixote (last edited Aug 20, 2012 01:55PM) (new)

Miquixote I was suggesting that collections of nothing is an academic work. or rather written by what appears to be an intellectual-type. usually university press publishes works of intellectual merit, or try to? I was suggesting that Sex and the City was the less intellectual, more populist literature.

message 11: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I know, I'm agreeing. I said "No" in response to your question "Am I wrong?"

message 12: by Miquixote (new)

Miquixote ah, ok! silly me, lol.

message 13: by Ben (last edited Aug 20, 2012 02:12PM) (new)

Ben It saddens me to see The Finkler Question (a Booker-prize winning novel no less!) ranked as low as books by Snooki, Pamela Anderson and O.J. Simpson. It's not the best book I've ever read, but it certainly deserves better than that!

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Ben wrote: "It saddens me to see The Finkler Question (a Booker-prize winning novel no less!) ranked as low as books by Snooki, Pamela Anderson and O.J. Simpson. It's not the best book I've ever read, but it certainly deserves better than that!"

Yes there are several books on this list that are rated atrociously low -- because they showed up on people's school curricula (e.g., Melville's Billy Budd, I suppose), or for whatever other reason that causes them not to be appreciated. There IS a list for Books That Deserve a Higher Average Rating, too, though ... you could add The Finkler Question there as well?

Thanks Themis! I knew that list existed but I forgot what it was called.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Glad to be of help!

Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination

message 18: by Miquixote (new)

The Clansmen

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Miquixote wrote: "Unfortunately I had to Delete this book for not hitting 1oo reviews:

(Sigh.) Well, should it still have a below 3.0 average by the time it hits 100 ratings, it'll go right back on this list ...

message 20: by Miquixote (new)

Miquixote It does look like an excellent candidate for worst book ever though (lol)!

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) And "Dealbreakers" -- and plenty of other lists along these lines ...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Thomas Dixon, author of The Clansman, was in the database twice; but it's still not 100 ratings. (Currently 53.)

message 23: by Mitchell (new)

Mitchell sex and the city and hannah montana should be removed since they are over 3.0. And the O'reilly Factor for Kids and Ghostwalk and Confessions of a Video Vixen.

message 24: by Hades-uftg (new)

Hades-uftg Tartarus I've just finished Mrs. God. It was a truly awful experience. The whole thing. At first, I found the premise of this novella so promising that I tried to ignore the stilted writing and the cardboard characters but then it became so monotonous, I started skipping chunks of descriptions, especially the ones to do with the house, trying to find something mildly interesting and cohesive.

I felt the author was trying too hard at coming up with something literary and create ambience by trying to imitate some of the literary writers mentioned in the book. It didn't work. Good writing and story telling shouldn't show strain and this book is strenuous in every respect. I think I've just lost 10 years of my life reading it.

message 25: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Deleted for reaching 3.00:

Billy Budd, Sailor
The Mile High Guy

message 26: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Deleted for being over 3.00:
The Host
Matched
Evermore
Marked
Betrayed
Chosen
Untamed
Betsy Red Hoodie
Nieuwe Buren

I think someone mistook this for a general "worst books" list, because there were a bunch that were way over 3.00.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads The Clansman, not up to 100 ratings (though 81 is closer than 53), but its average is still making it thoroughly viable when it gets there (about 2.4 at present).

message 28: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Ugh, who keeps adding that book?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Some of us were forced to read it... ugh.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads With another 4 ratings The Clansman will be eligible! And I will vote for it, yes I will.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads And it has passed 100 ratings, and on it goes!

The Clansman, you suck.

message 34: by Mike Briggs (last edited Apr 02, 2015 08:43AM) (new)

Mike Briggs Having reached 3.0, Hitler's book should be removed, eh? I do not wish to remove it. So I'll leave it to someone else do to so.

If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer by O.J. Simpson has also reached a 3 rating.

ETA: Other books hitting 3.0 exactly.

Booklovinglady Mike wrote: "Having reached 3.0, Hitler's book should be removed, eh? I do not wish to remove it. ..."

The description clearly says "less than 3.00 average", so I've removed Mein Kampf, If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer, The Late Great Planet Earth, Ist Mein Hintern Wirklich So Dick? Tagebuch Einer Empfindsamen Frau and Miss Timmins' School for Girls as they've all reached an average of 3.00 or more.

message 40: by Keith (new)

Keith One day, Maradonia and the Seven Bridges will have 100 votes, and it can join this illustrious list with its current 1.56 average...

Emm - Stories for Ghouls Whoa, something actually got HIGHER on the list than BIRTH CONTROL IS SINFUL!??? How? That book must be genuinely bad to get that kind of "achievement".

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It's got a pretty bad average rating, but I can't tell why, as all the reviews I can see are in Spanish. I'm very curious, though!

message 43: by Keith (new)

Keith Emm ☿ wrote: "Whoa, something actually got HIGHER on the list than BIRTH CONTROL IS SINFUL!??? How? That book must be genuinely bad to get that kind of "achievement"."

Google Translate informs me that the title is "Kisses Between The Lines" and the plot summary just sounds like that of a standard-issue romance book about a lonely, bookish young woman who meets a hot bad boy with a ~dark past~. From translating the highest-rated review, it sounds as if it's just badly written with some questionable elements like anorexia being instantly cured.

That sounds like a fountain of stereotypes and poor morals, but not unusually horrible.. I agree with Susanna, I'm still very curious how bad it could be to get such a low rating... Thanks for Google-translating the blurb. :)

message 45: by Lobstergirl (last edited May 17, 2016 07:55PM) (new)

Lobstergirl When a book has that many ratings and a ridiculously low rating, it usually means there's a "campaign" involved. Word about the book or the author spread on social media. 713 ratings with a 1.86 overall rating doesn't happen "organically." Which isn't to say that the rating is not deserved.

message 47: by Keith (new)

Keith Besos entre lineas has now gone up to a slightly higher average of 1.98, suggesting that the campaign against it may have ended and more recent reviews have been kinder. However, it remains at the top of this list with more than twice as many votes as the next one (the Birth Control is Sinful book).

Here is a long and angry-looking review (in Spanish) by one of the people who voted for it on this list, which may shed some light: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
