KIM SAVAGE is the author of three critically acclaimed young adult novels, After the Woods (Kirkus, Booklist starred), Beautiful Broken Girls (Kirkus star, Kirkus 10 Best YA of 2017), and In Her Skin (YALSA Best YA 2019), all with Farrar, Straus, Giroux/Macmillan. Her novels have been published in Spain, Brazil, and Turkey, and have been optioned for TV. Kim presents at conferences and book festivals nationwide; has been featured on NPR, Herald Radio, and on local cable stations; and she reads from her novels at bookstores across the country. A former reporter with a Master degree in Journalism from Northeastern University, Kim's stories are based in and around Boston. It's nice to hear from you, and thanks for the question, it's such a good one! ATW definitely has some dark themes, but lighter ones too: beauty and bravery, what makes a real friendship, loyalty and freedom. Told through Julia's point of view, there were times when it was a relief to get of her head! I think that as long as the places a writer goes make sense for the story, and nothing is gratuitous, road blocks won't appear. At least that's how it was for me.

As for what inspired me, I was interested in bravery in its many forms, especially when it comes to girls. We have so many female characters in YA who demonstrate courage through physical strength and daring. I wanted to create two characters who have to use their wits--and in Liv's case, make unthinkable sacrifices--to be free.
