What Makes a Good Story (From 6 Masters of the Craft)
Posted in Storytelling
I write and speak a lot about storytelling. Of course, my focus is the business world and helping organizations engage better with people. But when it really comes down to it, there isn’t really any difference between stories told for a business purpose and those told otherwise. Why? Because we are all people. Businesses have a terrible habit of de-humanizing the world, of turning people into numbers and relationships into prospects. Only that doesn’t really engender tru...
Empower Your Audience. Stop Writing Selfishly!
Posted in Tumblog
When you develop marketing campaigns and content, it’s not all about you. Stop being selfish. When you switch “we” with “you” (in most instances; obviously there are exceptions) you empower your audience. You connect them to your business and your product by building the expectation that they need to try what you are offering. They have a problem that you can help solve.

A Glimpse Into the Future of Storytelling
Posted in MarketingStorytelling
For storytellers, digital is the biggest candy shop ever created. It enables stories to be told in fantastic new ways that combine a variety of media including written word, images, video, and even games…all at the same time. Of course, it took a while for the technology to get to a point where that was possible (i.e., HTML 5, javascript, parallax and responsive design, etc.) but we are finally beginning to see what the future of storytelling might become.

Humanizing Marketing

Leads. ROI. Conversions. Acquisition.
These, and more, are the words that we use to describe marketing. But they are old words for an old way of thinking about marketing. Why? Because marketing is changing to focus on the engagement with people. It’s focusing on the relationships.
Welcome to the Experience Economy
The digital world is all about experiences. Combining web content with video with mobile applications (and even large screen and interactive print), organizations ha...

Storytelling 101: HP Flow
Posted in MarketingStorytelling
This was originally published on the Limelight Networks blog as part of my day-to-day responsibilities as Sr. Director, Marketing Strategy.
This is a new, on-going series that will analyze the good and bad of storytelling in today’s digital world, using examples of big-brands as they switch their strategies from telling to engaging.
HP recently released a video for one of its new printers. Normally, that wouldn’t be a really big deal but the method by which they c...
Separation of Church and State: Google, Motorola, and the Android Community
Posted in Business
In the wake of yesterday’s announcement about Google’s proposed acquisition of Motorola, I have been asked quite a bit about whether I think Google will keep the handset business.
It’s a very valid question. A good portion of the flak that has come as a result of the announcement has been from the Android community around a “conflict of interest.” If Google, the provider and developer of the Android OS, now makes handsets, will it try and lock out other manufacturers as a way...

You Are Doing More Than Just Telling a Story
Posted in MarketingStorytelling
As a writer, you’ve heard the old adage, “show, don’t tell.”
To be honest, I couldn’t tell you how many times I heard that as I was honing my craft. And, ironically, I parroted it back when I taught creative writing. Looking back now, my experience with that phrase is much the same as with another phrase, the one we swear when we become parents that we will never repeat…”because I said so.”But what does “show, don’t tell” really mean? What does it mean to describ...

Who Defines Who We Are?
Posted in Tumblog
This video is a powerful spoken word poem beautifully illustrated by a cadre of talented artists all speaking out about one thing: the pain of words. For those who were bullied or named or marginalized or outcast, the pain of those names becomes a stigma. It becomes an identity. And life is spent in one big therapy session with the world trying to undo what was done. Bullying is something we must all take seriously.
I neglected to put information in here about the To This Day...
