Are You Over-Subscribed?
Ezra Galston, a VC at the I2A Fund, wrote a great piece for TechCrunch exploring web service subscriptions based on targeted consumer research. It’s always refreshing to see market or opportunity analysis using quantitative methods rather than just back-of-the-napkin assumptions. Now, with some caveats to that:
The survey reflected more than 100 opt-in respondents, 96 percent of whom are between the ages of 23-33. Though significant, the sample is not representative of a...

Photos: Blurry Images a Thing of the Past?
Posted in Tumblog
Everyone has shot a blurry image or two. But that’s not the worst part. It’s finding out later, after the shot has long passed, that it’s out of focus.
Thankfully, new photography innovation may make those blurry shots a thing of the past:

In short:
The device allows all depths of a scene to be recorded in one image, allowing anything to be put in focus after it has been taken.
There’s a great video talking about this...
Want To Change Healthcare? Change the Culture First.
Posted in Healthcare
What’s at the core of the healthcare issues today? Is it a bloated infrastructure? Is it old, manual processes? Or is it something more fundamental?
If we want to change healthcare, change the system through which people find, get, and pay for care, we have to look at the issue much deeper than the process or the money. We have to look at the behavior, the very culture, of how we seek healthcare.
A disregard for cost
The first element of the healthcare culture that has caused...
The Human Brain is a Crazy Place!

This is a series of Ted Talks about our penchant to believe (or want to believe) irrational things. From seeing faces in Mars to our own consciousness, these videos are well worth a couple hours of your life. Of course, it’s fun to poke fun at ourselves but keep in mind that many of the mentally ill, especially schizophrenics, don’t have the ability to discern rational from irrational, especially when in the sway of full blown symptoms. Truly gives perspective to how amazing...

But one unacknowledged benefit of having everyone connected via a vast social network is our ability to raise awareness for issues and to seek out advice. In the article link below from Slate, a mother was able to diagnose her son’s condition by posting pictures to Facebook and interacting with both a primary and secondary network of fri...

Although this is not innovative in and of itself (in fact, many companies have done this; my own startup, GoWare, did this 5 years ago with a feature called “send to my phone” whereby you could right click on anything in your computer and automatically have it converted and sent to your phone as part of a pe...
The Democratization of Healthcare
Posted in BusinessHealthcare
I think it’s safe to say that technology has had a profound impact on a significant number of major industries. In many cases, it’s been to make things more efficient. Technology can replace manual, paper-based process. Technology can enable faster data collection. Technology can expose behind-the-scenes machinations so people really know what’s going on.
From education to manufacturing to car insurance, technology has reshaped (or is reshaping) how industries opera...
