Opinion: Be Contrarian, Be Innovative

Posted in Intelligence

What if listening to your customer wasn’t the best way to grow your business? What if doing what you thought was right actually made your business more successful that doing what your customer’s thought was right?

Those are some of the ideas expressed in a great article by Eric Brown @ Social Media Explorer:

Contrary to popular belief, listening to your custo...

For Better or For Worse, the Internet has Impacted Journalism

Posted in Publishing

The Economist has been hosting a debate between journalism professor Jay Rosen and media skeptic Nicholas Carr about how the Internet has either impacted journalism negatively or positively (with Jay on the positive side and Nick on the negative). GigaOm has an excellent write-up of the debate to date.

All-in-all, there has definitely been an impact. Perhaps it has been positive to the art and craft of journalism, forcing professional journalists to be more careful about ho...

Hands-on With SketchMee for Mac

Posted in Hands On

SketchMee for Mac, launched in January of this year, is a fantastic application for rendering photos as “sketches” using a combination of pencil and chalk.

SketchMee has a very simple interface that makes using the software enjoyable and rewarding.

After “dragging and dropping” a photo onto the canvas (the dotted-border placeholder in the settings panel is where you can drag a picture from anywhere),

the default sketch settings are applied immediately.

To Be Connected or Not to be Connected…

Posted in Human

In a recent infographic put together by Cisco (see below), we have finally reached the tipping point in connectivity: there are more devices connected than there are people. Of course, this is largely a result of cheap wifi and networking components that electronic manufacturers can put in their devices to enable them for network awareness and remote control (although this is not always a good thing).

In this “always on” world, to “not be connected” may no longer be part of the...

Sometimes We Forget…

Posted in Tumblog

The Earth is moving all the time beneath our feet. I think we often take for granted that the sun rises and sets because the planet we live on is turning. But when you get a chance to see the heavens from the perspective of this motion, it puts things back into a sublime perspective.

The American Dream…Digitized

Posted in Culture and Society

Having grown up a video-game player, and still avidly play (well, off-and-on…), I have always wondered what the fascination is with playing video games. In the practical sense, they really offer nothing. There is no “prize” to be won by beating a level or getting a character the latest weapon. Still, thousands upon thousands of hours are “wasted” each and every day to video gamers around the world.

What I would like to postulate, though, is that video games are act...

When “Goofing Off” is Productive

Posted in Human

According to a recent study,”Impact of Cyberloafing on Psychological Engagement,” by Don J.Q. Chen and Vivien K.G Lim of the National University of Singapore,Web browsing can actually refresh tired workers and enhance their productivity, compared to other activities such as making personal calls, texts or emails, let alone working straight through with no rest at all.

From the study:

Why is Web-surfing more restorative than, say, responding to a friend’s email? When browsing the...
