Is There Really a Digital Divide?

Posted in

A recently published paper on this subjectwould suggest that there is a growing gap between those that have access to the Internet and those that don’t as well as the level of access we have. Although I agree, in principal, that there is a difference in what we can access and what we can’t (depending on where we live in the world), I conjecture that this is a result of governmental initiatives and business/market pressure that have impacted the same core issue, freedom of informatio...

What Would I Do With Google Glass?

Posted in Human

Google is doing something spectacular with Glass. For the first time, augmenting the human experience with computational power and Internet connectivity won’t require your hands. No more tapping the screen. No more mouse. No more keyboard. In fact, gaining access to connecting with people around the globe, interfacing with data, and enabling enhancements to the very human condition will seem like they are apart of our bodies. It will be as natural as walking down the street. Th...

The InterConnected World of Things

Posted in Technology

If you are in any tech industry and haven’t heard the phrase, “The Internet of Things,” you might well be living in a cave. This is one of the biggest buzz phrases in all of technology. It grew out of the concept of “ubiquitous computing” that, from Wikipedia, describes a situation whereby,

“…in a post-desktop model ofhuman-computer interactionin which information processing has been thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and activities. In the course of ordinary activ...

When A Book Is Not A Book

Posted in Publishing

An ex-pixar designer recently published a really cool app on the iPad: The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

Notice that I didn’t call this a book. That is because the application is actually an interactive representation of the award-winning short movie he created. It’s not a “book” per say. Of course it tells a story and it’s been formatted for the iPad but it is cl...

The Internet of things is more than just being connected to the Internet

Posted in Tumblog

Perhaps we should rename this whole concept to something like “the connected world?” Because as Sony shows in their OneTouch Sharing, it’s also about devices connecting to each other. Wow.

Storytelling 101: Coca Cola Journey

Posted in MarketingStorytelling

This was originally published on the Limelight Network blog as part of my day-to-day responsibilities as Sr. Director, Marketing Strategy.

This is a new, on-going series that will analyze the good and bad of storytelling in today’s digital world, using examples of big-brands as they switch their strategies from telling to engaging.

In late 2012, Coca-Cola took a decidedly right-turn in their approach to digital marketing. They sacked the “product/fact-based” websi...

Are You Using These Highly Productive Mobile Apps?

Posted in Tumblog

Everyone seems to be making lists (or infographics, or infographics OF lists) these days and Mashable is no exception with their list of the 10 top “mobile productivity” apps. Here they are in stack-rank order (no links because there are both Android and iOS version):

Wunderlist (I use Things instead because I have it on my Mac, my iPad, and iPhone and they all sync; but if you don’t have a good ToDo App, ugh, get one!)
Genius Scan (never used but seems interesting; I use a Liv...

Can Content Context Supplant Content Discovery?

Posted in Tumblog

There is a continuing “trickle” of technology around providing recommended content (text and video) based on what a user is reading. Taboola and Outbrain have been pushing this in the market, are working with major publishers, and have even made it easy for any blog owner to jump on board (which, obviously, makes the whole system more intelligent). But part of the joy of reading is discovery, simply finding links because something catches your eye. Something completely unrela...

Forward Look: The Future of Content

Posted in MarketingPublishing

In my current position at Limelight Networks, I get to interact with many of the world’s biggest content producers and distributors, from the likes of Netflix, Disney, AMC, and CTV to broadcasters and telcos like Bell Canada and Verizon. If there’s one thing that’s clear it’s that content is king…again.

Remember back in the days of the early Internet when everyone said you can’t charge for content. There’s too much free content on the web already, they would say. U...
