Solving the Challenges for Personal Media
Posted in BusinessTechnology
We all have personal media: pictures, videos, music, documents. And the amount we have is growing.
As I wrote about in a previous post, I believe the cloud will be a great solution to help us make that personal media available anywhere and anytime. But there are challenges inherent in that which will slow adoption and usage. I’ve put some thought into this and identified 6 critical issues that must be addressed. This might be through a single software solution (mayb...

At CES 2013. This platform from Arraynet enables any device to be a connected device. That’s pretty awesome and really signifies the tipping point for connecting everything: a platform for data interchange and device access.

Storytelling 101: Starbucks Could REALLY Get It
Posted in MarketingStorytelling
Starbucks is an iconic brand. That goes without saying. But they actually do a tremendous amount more than just sell beverages (and provide free wifi). They are involved in diversity programs, community programs, recycling, sustainability, foundations. Whew. And that’s just to name a few.
But you wouldn’t know that if you didn’t go digging around their site.
That’s because Starbucks is doing a terrible job of storytelling.
Now I say that with a grain of salt as I r...
Photo: An Interesting Take on Stop-Motion Photography
Posted in Tumblog
Dave Wallace, a freelance videographer, put together a stop motion video consisting of 2,335 photographs. Stop motion videos are nothing new, but Wallace’s video uses an interesting twist. Created as an advertisement forClickPixx, a new online photo-printing service, the video was created using printed photographs.
After spending the day shooting over 2,000 photos, they took them back to the studio, created a small 10 panel frame and started to manually place each photo, and t...

Truth in Fiction: Cameron’s Avatar and the “Global Brain”
Posted in HumanIntelligence
Watching Avatar recently got me to thinking about what Cameron was trying to describe in this movie.
If you haven’t seen it (under a rock jokes aside), the world of Pandora has a global network of data that can be accessed by the indigenous population. This network is embodied as the planet itself and connection happens when the natives connect a piece of themselves (nerve endings hidden in their braid) to vines hanging from special trees.
This is an obvious metaphor...

Why Kids Don’t Like to Read
Posted in Education
Of course, this is a gross generalization but it’s meant as such. There are always kids that love to read but why are we seeing a decline in reading levels nationwide? Why are kids turning away from books?
A huge part of this argument really revolves around culture. Think back to the days of the Dime Novels. Admittedly pulp fiction (with little cultural value), they still entranced readers of all ages. Reading was truly a way to “escape” from the harshness of reality. Unfort...

The Largest Structure in the Universe?

ScienceShot: The Largest Structure in the Universe
Astronomers have discovered the largest structure yet seen in the universe, a clump of quasars so large that it would take light 4 billion years to traverse its widest dimension. Light from these quasars started its journey when the universe was only 5 billion years old, the researchers say. Far larger than previously discovered groups of quasars, the structure (artist’s depiction of a single quasar) is so large that it challe...
