Reinventing the Way Kids Play with Toys

Posted in Tumblog

ToyTalk is the company that means to change the way kids interact with toys. Although they aren’t building actual toys, it’s really only a matter of time before they probably do (or someone does to link with their software). What they are doing right now, though, is innovating the way kids interact with electronics by leveraging context, AI, and the cloud. Killer stuff. They will change toys forever.

Check out All Things Digital’s writeup and then head on over to the site to w...

Human 2.0

Posted in Human

A recent publicity stunt for Cosmo featured a girl walking around a crowded area with an “iPad helmet” on her head.

As you can see in the video, it’s not just that she’s wearing the contraption that causes pause, it’s how the screens are reflective of each perspective of her head and how the video is clearly representing her actual movements. From an existential position, we can ask a basic question: where does the human end and the representation be...

The World of 2015 (Or Beyond)?

Posted in Technology

What will the future be like? How are digital technologies changing society? Culture? The human condition? There are no hard and fast rules but it’s clear that digital technologies will fundamentally alter the world as we know it. Below is a narrative look at this world in a few years. This isn’t based entirely on speculation. It stems from an analysis of fundamental industry trends and, of course, a bit of old-fashioned prognostication.

The world is faster. Devices like Go...

When Life Throws You Lemons…

Posted in Tumblog

Don’t make lemonade. Throw them back.

This short, 150-word piece about “life” was recently submitted to the Reader’s Digest “Your Life” contest through their Facebook App. Go vote for me!

Life in 150 words? Preposterous. I only need two: throw lemons. I went to school to be a writer and never got published. Threw some lemons and fell into the “real world.” Made some lemonade there. Then fired. Hired. Fired. Hired. Startup failed. Again. Lemons, lemons, lemons. Got married. Made...

Video: Stop-motion Shot on a Nokia N8…with a lot of sand!

Posted in Tumblog

Great little stop-motion video (I love this video format) shot entirely on a phone. Either you think it’s pretty amazing stuff or that some people have too much time on their hands. Maybe a little of both…;)

Gulp. The world's largest stop-motion animation shot on a Nokia N8. from Nokia HD on Vimeo.

Photos: The REAL Cloud…

If you have any respect for how sublime nature can make us feel, you have to watch this video of the dust storm that rolled over the Phoenix, AZ area on July 5, 2011:

Although this happens a few times each year, this one was particularly interesting as it came in from the Southeast (most come in from the West). This is a result of colliding pressure systems (i.e., thunderstorms rolling in quickly)...

Why Does Time Fly?

Posted in HumanScience

A recent Scientific American article recently explored this concept with some starting results.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=why-does-time-fly

In short,

The experience of time is not linear. Fear and joy stretches time as do stimuli that move towards us. What can we learn from these studies for our day-to-day experiences? When we experience something as “taking a long time” it is really the result of three inter-twined processes: the actual duration of t...

2013 Video Super Bowl Ads: Is Toyota the Winner?

Posted in Tumblog

AdAge has put together a list of all the pre-release ads that will show during the Super Bowl. Some of these, like the dorritos ads, are just hilarious (and, thankfully, infused with a little story-telling). Coca Cola has taken it up a notch by connecting their video to a digital marketing campaign that will invite user interaction to determine the outcome of the story (i.e., Chose Your Own Adventure). My favorite, still, is Audi. Not because it’s better than the Toyota ad bu...

A Digital Book Done Right

Posted in Tumblog

If you haven’t taken a look at Google’s “20 Things I Learned About Browsers and the Web,” you should. This is the future of digital books. Built entirely in HTML 5, it’s engaging, interactive, and provides more of a “book feel” than e-readers. In fact, I hope that Apple and Amazon take a cue from the Google Chrome Team regarding UI and design experience. Taking cues from Seuss and others, the book itself is well written, light, airy, and pleasantly illustrated for an otherwis...

Wow, and I thought it was all just fun and games?!

Posted in Tumblog

That’s right. Sometimes the things we think are just fun and games actually have a lot of science behind them:

I wonder if knowing this will make me a better shot?

Probably not.
