Technology Trends Driving the Future of Tomorrow

Posted in Technology

The digital world is always in flux. Part of my work with startups (through Rogers Venture Partners) and as a marketing/digital strategist involves continually looking at the trends that shape and drive our world. Although the list below is bound to change (maybe even as soon as tomorrow) the trends listed within are a good “line in the sand” for anyone interested in the technologies and behavior that will shape our world. These trends are related to a narrative view of th...

You Are What You…Read

Posted in Education

Sometimes, as writers, we focus so much on the act of putting our pen to paper that we forget to look at what other writers have put on paper. But I’m not talking about examining how Faulker constructed his paragraphs or how J.K. Rowling created her story arcs. Reading as a writer involves much more than that. I know that a lot of creative writing courses and writing workshops focus on the act of reading as a way to teach the mechanics of writing. In fact, I myself am guilt...

The Art of Long-Term Story Arcs in Marketing

Posted in Tumblog

CopyBlogger’s Georgina Laidlaw says that in order to keep customers interested in what a company has to say, there always has to be an evolving story line.

She says that in marketing, “we create an emotional connection with readers (through story) that causes them to naturally wonder about our brand, and that entices them to come back and check out the latest installment of that brand story.”

To create long-term story arcs, marketers can produce a series of articles, use commen...

Hands On with Streamotor WordPress Plugin

Posted in Hands On

Over the years, as I’ve switched from programming sites directly to using CMS tools like Joomla and WordPress, I’ve experimented with integrating video. When I was programming sites myself, it was fairly easy, especially as online video platforms (like Limelight Video Platform, Brightcove, or Streamotor) provided tools to create interactive players that could pull from my entire video library. But when I migrated to WordPress, I found integrating video, short of cutting and...

An Ode to Innovation (by Apple)

Posted in TumblogVideos

A really poignant and heartfelt look at why one of the best design companies does what it does…best. And a message for anyone out there designing, building, imagining, creating, or inspiring anything that other people touch and consume and read and watch and feel and think about.

In short, be mindful. Be purposeful. Be intentful.

“The first thing we ask is: What do we want people to feel? Delight. Surprise. Love. Connection. Then we begin to craft around our intention. It...

A Thought: Visualized

Posted in Tumblog

Yeah, even though the Japanese researches used a fish, this is just amazing to see. Puts it into perspective how much of this “lightning” is going on inside our own heads all the time. Gotta love science.

How Can You Tell When Storytelling is Done Right?

Posted in Tumblog

Watch this video. Ask the Dodge Ram folks. Ask yourself. I’m not religious, not a farmer, and don’t own a truck. But this sermon and montage of images tells a powerful story of how Dodge enables these farmers (only showing the truck 2 or 3 times and just briefly) to do everything that the sermon says they do. That’s powerful storytelling.

Dogs Can Tell Stories Too!

Posted in Tumblog

A really fantastic story from the New Zealand lottery. Once again demonstrating the power of narrative to create an emotional connection between viewer and brand. Now even though I can’t go buy a New Zealand lottery ticket, it makes me think for a second about answering that question, “what would I do (if I won)?” Of course, you can’t answer that question if you don’t play…
