Become An Awesome Presenter With One Super-Secret Trick

Posted in Business

Are you one of those people who freaks out at the thought of presenting? Or are you fine with presenting but can never seem to really engage the audience? Regardless of how you present or the material you deliver, there is one aspect of presenting, a “super secret” trick that can make you a better presenter over night.

What is that “super secret” trick?

Hold on, I’ll get to it.

As a professional speaker (it’s part of my job at Limelight Networks to evangelize the thoughts, idea...

Are You a Tool?

Posted in Human

In an interesting article publishing by Science, a photographer caught some pictures of a fish using a rock to smash open a clam. That’s right, a fish.

Now there is some argument about whether or not the rock constitutes a tool. There are some comments on the article post about this not being a tool, that in order for this to be a demonstration of tool use, the fish would have had to use th...

How-To: The Joy of Seeing Your Words in Print

Posted in Publishing

Self-publishing has been around for decades. I remember as a graduate student at California State University, Northridge, the humble beginnings of XLibris and other digital printers promising to bring your words to print. I played around with some of them although, at the time, the Vanity presses were still in full-swing, giving budding authors like myself the opportunity to publish when mainstream houses were swamped with submissions. And I especially remember seeing my f...

Sometimes Marketing Genius Isn’t About Storytelling

Posted in Marketing

Okay, let’s face it, I harp on storytelling. It’s the evolution of marketing from advertising to engaging. Got it. But the recent launch of a new app for smartphones, Mailbox(link is to Appstore page), illustrates that sometimes, creating an emotional engagement with your audience isn’t really about storytelling. It’s about demand (and a lot of marketing genius).

When the App is the Line

#ifihadglass

Posted in Tumblog

If I had Google Glass, I’d document the human condition. I’d wear them 24/7. I’d answer the question, “am I still human?” Or am I something more? A new version of human? I’d become Mr. Glass, juxtaposing a real and digital identity to write a new philosophy of life.

Transmedia Breakdown: Game of Thrones

Posted in Videos

This is a little old but a great break-down of the Game of Thrones transmedia campaign. Really interesting to see how the developers/producers touched different aspects of the stories not only in different channels but using different senses.

Defining What Is “News”

Posted in Publishing

Is “news” a point in time? An event that happened and is reported? Or is news an on-going dialogue about an event and the people/events around it?

This is an important concept as our sense of information moves from static, point-in-time sources like news papers and magazines to 24/7/365 stream of media provided by Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and other social media sources.

I believe that there are arguments for both cases. In a recent article posted by GigaOm, the crux of the...

Does the Internet Affect Buying Behavior?

Posted in Tumblog

According to Nielsen it does. The findings are from the Nielsen Global Survey of New Product Purchase Sentiment, which surveyed more than 29,000 respondents with Internet access from 58 countries about new product awareness. According to Nielsen,

“Consumers are increasingly finding the Internet and mobile vehicles just as compelling as other more traditional advertising,” said Rob Wengel, senior vice president at Nielsen Innovation Analytics. “Social media can also be an effec...

Why You Aren’t Creative (Right Now)

Posted in EducationHuman

In a previous post about creativity I discussed the concept of a rational and irrational state of mind (rather than a typical left/right brain dichotomy). My argument was that creativity represented the mind moving into a state of irrationality wherein inspiration (whatever that may be) signaled the shift from rational to irrational. Irrationality, synonymous with creativity, is really a free-flowing experience of pattern recognition. I further argued that some people,...
