The Internet is Undermining the Fabric of Society

Posted in Culture and Society

I recently came across a post by Adam Rosenberg on Digital Trends about the bigotry and hate in video games. Not necessarily as part of the game content itself but as part of the experience. He sums it up nicely as:

So let’s talk.Violent content in video games is no different from violent content in movies, in TV, in music, in comics, in any other form of media. Games don’t train our children to be murderers; they train them to be assholes.Shouldn’t we be working a...

Review of Scribd’s iOS app: Float

Posted in Hands On

Reading books on the iPhone/iPad isn’t new. Not only does Apple have their own app (iBooks) but Kindle, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and others have launched their own software to support e-reading.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been an easy way to discover user-generated and self-published material very easily. Outside of going to Scribd’s website or loading PDFs directly onto your phone (which is counter-intuitive to the whole “discovery” process) there is no way to really discove...

Ripping the Bandage off the Leg of Healthcare

Posted in Healthcare

For quite some time now, we’ve been looking at solving the healthcare industry’s woes all the wrong way.

Better insurance. Making insurance available to everyone. Streamlining processes with technology.

But those really aren’t the problems with the system. Because no matter how much you make the system better to use, easier for people to gain access to services, or more efficient, it’s all just a Bandaid fix. There’s still a festering, nasty wound underneath the bandage. The...

The iPad as a Business Catalyst

Posted in Business

In a recent article on ReadWriteWeb, a correlation is made between an encoding company’s growth and the growth of the iPad. In fact, the two growth lines are almost identical (of course, not in volume but in scale):

The interesting thing about this is wondering how many other companies have their growth tied to the growth of the iPad. I can’t say that dedicated software developers count...

Look Into My Eye…

Posted in Tumblog

A really cool series of photographs of the human eye. Puts things into perspective when you think about how amazing the eye is as a biological mechanism…and how beautiful.

Scientist Mohamed Babu from Mysore, India captured beautiful photos of these translucent ants eating a specially colored liquid sugar. Some of the ants would even move between the food resulting in new color combinations in their stomachs. Read more over on the Daily Mail.

Photo: Haunting Photo Essay on Housing Boom in Ireland

Posted in Tumblog

This is a fantastic series of images (that are actually available as part of a photo-essay book ont the subject) of houses half-built or entirely new neighborhoods empty. As if they are all waiting for the next big boom to get finished or lived in.

Security of a System is the Sum of all its Parts

Posted in Tumblog

I’ve written about this before (as it pertains a lot to cloud offerings) but we often look at the security of a system in terms of the security of each of its individual components. As a recent cyberattack on a DoD contractor provided, that is not always the case:

When we start looking at overall system integrity, we must take into account both the components of the system themselves as wel...
