Best Action Romance Reads of 2014

Here are my best action romance reads for 2014. Now, not all of these books were published in 2014, it’s just the year I read them. And they are in a purely random order.

There is quite a mix from urban fantasy with very strong romances (Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews), to steampunk (Meljean Brook and Bec McMaster), to contemporary fun (Kristin Ashley and Liliana Hart), to paranormal (Larissa Ione, Nalini Singh and Meljean Brook) and of course, science fiction romance (Linnea Sinclair, Veronica Scott, SFR Brigade and Rachel Bach).

At Star’s End: A Best E-Romance Book of 2014

I am all kinds of excited! AT STAR’S END made Library Journal’s Best E-Original Romances for 2014!!!!!

There are also some other great books on the romance list and the other lists that make up LJ’s Best of 2014.

Book 3 in the Phoenix Adventures series, ON A ROGUE PLANET, will be out in November along with a bonus novella, BENEATH A TROJAN MOON. I should have some sexy, spacey covers to show off very soon.

 

Romantic Suspense, Action Romance and Adventure Romance: What’s the Difference?

The other month, author Shannon Stacey was over at Dear Author asking for recs of good action-adventure romance and talking about her new action romance release, No Place to Hide. It started a bit of a discussion on what is romantic suspense, action romance and action-adventure romance and how are they different.

I thought I’d take a stab at shedding some light on this topic close to my heart.

For me, these are all subsets of each other. Romantic Suspense is romance mixed with…well, suspense – this suspense often comes from dangerous situations and classic RS contains law enforcement/military, bad guys, serial killers etc. Not all RS has a lot of action or a fast pace, sometimes the suspense is derived from mystery, fear, and can be psychological. Or the story might be more focused on the romance and the suspense/action is just a bit-player. I’ve been re-reading some of my old favorite Linda Howard books and they are definitely romantic suspense but most aren’t heavy on the action.

But, some RS falls into the action romance category – they have lots of danger, action scenes, a fast pace. These books play out like action movies. One of my fav action romance series if the I-Team series by Pamela Clare. My Anomaly Trilogy is also action romance.

And then there is a subset of action romance that can be classed as action-adventure romance. Action-adventure romance stories have a quest, a search for some important object/person/thing, that gives the story its adventure feel. These stories are like Indiana Jones or Romancing the Stone. So far I’ve found most of the recs for good action-adventure romance are historical, steampunk or sci-fi. I think this is because it is just harder to get that adventure feel in a contemporary story. My current fav action-adventure romance series is the Iron Seas series by Meljean Brook. And action-adventure sci-fi style, is my Phoenix Adventures series (one reviewer called it the lovechild of Indiana Jones and Firefly). And I’m currently working on a contemporary action-adventure romance series…more info to come!

Here’s my nifty diagram to show the relationship between these sub-genres. Now I could probably get super skilled and link circles with science fiction romance and steampunk romance…but I think my artistic skills aren’t up to it!

First there was AT STAR’S END and the treasure hunt to find the last remaining fragment of the Mona Lisa. Now travel to the heart of the Devil’s Nebula on the hunt for the gun used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln.

Welcome to my contribution to this week’s SFR Brigade Presents. Below is an exclusive excerpt from IN THE DEVIL’S NEBULA – Book 2 of the Phoenix Adventures.

Plan B was a secondary exit to the tunnels. “We need to get to the arboretum.” Ria pointed. “That way.”

They ran together. Ria liked that Zayn kept up easily.

They sprinted into another room and both of them stopped, looking up in awe. A glass roof showed the incredible night sky and asteroids flying past. Inside was filled with various forms of plant life. “The exit should be at the back of the room in the floor.”

They hustled and Zayn lifted away a giant vine. A small octagonal cover was set in the floor. It took both of them to shift it.

Zayn dropped in first. As she followed, she heard him curse.

She soon realized why. The tunnel was smaller than the previous one and after a few meters, the angle changed to near vertical. Ria slid downward. Her enviro suit was nearly frictionless and she felt herself gather speed.

“Zayn?” Her voice echoed in the tight confines of the tunnel.

“I’m here.” His voice came from below. “Hold on.”

She felt an increase in heat. Then she heard Zayn yell and a second later she shot out the end of the tunnel. She caught of glimpse of him flying through the air ahead of her, arms pin-wheeling. Below them was a small lake of sewage.

The air caught in her lungs like a cat with claws. The lake wasn’t the biggest problem. The problem was where the lake was flowing.

To a giant ultraviolet treatment system.

That incinerated everything that passed through it.

Zayn and Ria landed with a thick splash.

 

He lost it all.

His career, his woman, his sanity.

Two years ago, on a deadly mission to the lawless Devil’s Nebula, Commander Zayn Phoenix’s life imploded. Now the former Strike Wing pilot fills his days with dangerous adventures alongside his treasure hunter brothers.

Cover Reveal: Action, Adventure and Romance IN THE DEVIL’S NEBULA

With great excitement, I shared the new cover for Book 2 of The Phoenix Adventures, In the Devil’s Nebula with Mr. Hackett.

Did he notice the sexy hero (pilot Zayn Phoenix) or spunky heroine (assassin Ria Dante)? No.

Did he comment on the awesome rugged landscape (that’s the wild western world of Diablo, by the way)? No.

Maybe he noticed the glowing red planet in the background or the cool starship blasting across the cover? No.

“Hey, how did Master Chief get on your cover?” he asked me.

Me: Hmm, I guess the sci-fi soldier silhouette on the front does look a little like the main character from the Halo games.

While Master Chief does not appear in my book In the Devil’s Nebula, like Halo, the story is chock full of action and adventure. There’s a treasure hunt to the find the ancient derringer used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln and of course, a scorching hot romance.

Action Romance Heroines with Erica Hayes

Let’s talk kick-ass, action romance heroines!!

Today fellow Aussie Sci-fi/Fantasy/Paranormal romance author, Erica Hayes is here to talk about those tough heroines we love to read about. Take it away Erica:

 

I love my fantasy stories with adventure! Sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, I don’t mind, so long as there’s lots of action. I like paranormal romance, but something had better happen alongside all that hot smexxin’, or that book hits the wall.

Still, the best fight scene in the world is dull without emotional conflict. A kick-ass heroine beating up the bad guys is awesome – but I like her to be more complicated than that. That’s one reason why Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake has remained so popular, despite her, um, bedroom fixation – Anita oozes emotional tension. Will I or won’t I? Should I or shouldn’t I? What’s right and what’s wrong – and do I even care anymore?

That’s the kind of heroine I’ve tried to create in my superhero fantasy Scorched. Verity is a crime-fighter, from a family of famous crime-fighters – but what does it really mean to be a hero? She’s just suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of her archenemy, Razorfire, a fire-obsessed maniac with no conscience. He’ll do anything, kill anyone, destroy anything in his path to get what he wants.

To beat him, Verity needs to become like him. Keeping the moral high ground costs innocent lives – but how much of her ethics should she sacrifice? Is she willing to lose everything – including her heroic family’s respect – to win?

Oh, and then there’s romance. Her record isn’t good. But she’s finally met a mysterious man who makes her pulse race. A real hero with a heart of pure gold. Suddenly, those moral issues loom large. How can she impress him, and defeat the villains too?

But you’ll be pleased to hear that amid all this angst, Verity still kicks plenty of villainous butt. Action, suspense, a splash of romance. That’s what we want.

WindKeepers: Action, Mythology and Romance

A few years back, I started a series about four sexy Italian brothers — billionaire businessmen…who also happened to each control one of the cardinal winds. WindKeepers who are tasked with protecting the world from the evil Tempest Winds.

Two of those stories were published with Harlequin’s Nocturne Bites line. Unfortunately that line finished before the final three stories in the series were published. Readers have emailed me asking for those stories…so finally (and with much excitement from me) here they are! The first email I received was from Priscilla — Priscilla, because you asked, I got busy getting these stories finished. Thank you for the motivation!

The WindKeepers are based on Roman Mythology — the Venti, the Aurae, the Tempest Winds — I drew them all from the ancient legends and thrust them into modern-day Italy. I’ve been lucky enough to visit Rome, Florence and Venice and incorporate my love of those cities into these stories. Oh, and of course, all these stories come with plenty of action along with the romance (-:

Book 1: Wind Kissed, Fire Bound

Heroine: Livia Cavalli — former Roman slave, now immortal Keeper of the Winds

Hero: Sexy horse trainer Rafe Donovan (who has a secret power of his own)

Location: Isola del Vento, island in the Mediterranean

My fav action scene: The Tempest Winds, trapped in the bodies of horses are making an escape attempt from the stables. We get to see Livia in action (using her power over the wind)…and Rafe as well (all I will say is fire).
