Pick Your Alien World

I have a guest science fiction romance author today…she’s going to talk about alien worlds (something I love) and cyborgs (something else I love!)

Phoenix Adventures readers know I’ve created some pretty interesting alien worlds: Centax (cyborgs!), Technis (the techomancer and his maze), Markaria (barbarian warriors!), but today Cara Bristol is going to talk about some of the alien worlds of her Cy-Ops Sci-fi romance series. Here she is…

Alien Worlds

In science fiction and sci-fi romance, world-building is the process of creating an imaginary place, which includes developing geography, history, culture, language, government, religion, etc. Sci-fi is one of the most setting-dependent genres. World-building can make or break the story.

In the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series I engage in some literal world-building by creating some alien planets as the setting for Mated with the Cyborg (book 2), Stranded with the Cyborg (book 1) and soon, Captured by the Cyborg (book 3, in process). While some scenes occur on space ships, shuttle ports, space stations, and Terra itself, others occur on those alien worlds. I expect to develop more planets as the series progresses, but so far, here’s what exists:

DeltaNu9084 – Featured in Stranded with the Cyborg. An uninhabited, heavily forested planet where Brock and Pia crash land. All is not as it appears; the planet has a dark secret.

Darius 4 – A terra-formed dwarf planet (created in honor of poor downgraded Pluto) that is a sex resort staffed by android pleasure workers. Mentioned in Stranded, it’s a key setting in Mated with the Cyborg. I think readers will get a kick out of it.

Xenia – A pacifist planet caught in a tug-of-war between good and evil. The fate of Xenia is one of the drivers of Stranded with the Cyborg. It’s a beautiful, unusual planet teeming unusual wildlife.

Lamis-Odg – the desert planet that is home to the Lamis-Odg people, the Cy-Ops arch villains who are terrorizing the galaxy. It’s mentioned in Stranded and more so in Mated. A territorial Lamis-Odg space station outpost serves as one of the main settings for Mated with the Cyborg.

Deceptio – A barren moon with an underground (sublunar!) surprise. It debuts in Mated and is the key setting Captured by the Cyborg (my WIP). I had fun creating this one. I love it.

CaraAd

Mated600x900

Kai Andros’s orders were simple. Get in. Gather the intel on the terrorist organization. Get out. Then he met her. Mariska. Beautiful. Innocent. Ignorant of her father’s atrocities. And marked for death. His orders said nothing about saving her. But he did. He went off-mission.

Can a rogue cyborg outrun both Cyber Operations and the terrorists to save the woman he loves?

Mated with the Cyborg is an action-packed erotic sci-fi romance between a man with a mission and a woman with a secret that jeopardizes their lives and the fate of the galaxy.

Cynthia Sax’s Top 10 Best Cyborg Romance Books

Science Fiction Romance author, Cynthia Sax, is here to share her Top 10 Cyborg Romances (yay, for sexy cyborgs!) and celebrate the release of her own recent cyborg romance, Releasing Rage.

***

I enjoyed Anna’s Top 10 Science Fiction Romance Books post so much. I asked to write my own Top 10 List, this time with cyborg romance books.

I LOVE cyborg romances. Cyborgs are normally warriors, my favorite type of heroes. They also have that delicious inner conflict between man and machine, emotion and logic, free will and following commands.

Here are my fave cyborg romances (in no particular order):

All of these stories have happy endings and can be read on their own. Please note: I like my cyborg romances spicy so many of the stories are on the hot side of the heat meter.

On A Cyborg Planet by Anna Hackett – I don’t have to tell you how fabulous Anna’s writing is. (grins) Anna here – no, I didn’t make her say that! Promise.
Burning Up Flint by Laurann Dohner – This is the first SciFi romance that I read with a cyborg hero (previously, I only viewed them as the baddies). I fell in love with Flint but the entire series is delicious. Burning Up Flint is the first story.
C791 by Eve Langlais – Combine sexy cyborgs with Eve’s awesome sense of humor and you have a hilarious, hot series. C791 is the first story.
Stranded With The Cyborg by Cara Bristol – Want a cyborg in a different role other than warrior? Brock, the cyborg hero, is a secret agent. Yes, think James Bond with mechanical parts.
Enhanced by Evangeline Anderson – Love the Borg in Star Trek? Six, the cyborg hero, reminds me of them, except he’s much, much sexier. This story is #12 in the Brides of the Kindred series but I found I could read it on its own.
Merry & Seduced by Shelley Munro – If you’re feeling in the holiday spirit, there’s this Christmas cyborg story from the always awesome Shelley Munro. It is best enjoyed after reading the other stories in the series but it can be read on its own.
Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair – There’s a reason this story made my list and Anna’s list. It’s awesome.
Her Cyborg Awakes by Melisse Aires – Her Cyborg Awakes is action packed, has romance and enough tech to make any SciFi lover happy.
Lyon’s Price by Mina Carter – Oh mamma. Lyon is one sexy cyborg. That first encounter between Lyon and Samara melted my screen.
Seeing Stars by Megan Hart – A short hot story about a woman who falls in love with the manbot (not a robot – he’s partially human which, IMHO, makes him a cyborg) she ordered to pleasure her.

These are my favorite cyborg romance books as of today. I understand from some of my writing buddies that there are plenty more cyborg stories releasing in the future. Yes! (fist pump) I love cyborg heroes.

Releasing Rage by Cynthia Sax

Releasing Rage_CompressedHalf Man. Half Machine. All Hers.

Rage, the Humanoid Alliance’s most primitive cyborg, has two goals–kill all of the humans on his battle station and escape to the Homeland. The warrior has seen the darkness in others and in himself. He believes that’s all he’s been programmed to experience.

Until he meets Joan.

Joan, the battle station’s first female engineer, has one goal–survive long enough to help the big sexy cyborg plotting to kill her. Rage might not trust her but he wants her. She sees the passion in his eyes, the caring in his battle-worn hands, the gruff emotion in his voice.

When Joan survives the unthinkable, Rage’s priorities are tested. Is there enough room in this cyborg’s heart for both love and revenge?

Win-Win Science Fiction Romance

Action Adventure Science Fiction RomanceAt the beginning of the year, I was thrilled when the Phoenix Adventures won a SFR Galaxy Award for Most Fun New Series, and the novella, Beneath a Trojan Moon nabbed another SFR Galaxy Award as well.

I am now ecstatic to announce that On a Rogue Planet took out the Prism Award for Best Futuristic Romance. Wow…just wow!

And just this month, Beneath a Trojan Moon won Romantic Novella of the Year in the Romance Writers of Australia’s Ella Awards. I was extra thrilled about this one, as my story was the only science fiction romance with my space marshal up against an earl, a solider and a bad boy.

I think I can officially say that the Phoenix Adventures are award-winning science fiction romance!

Top 10 Best Science Fiction Romance Books

Wicket was just trying to hunt when he stumbled upon...

I love science fiction romance. I love the unlimited possibilities, the fantastic worlds, the clash of cultures and the sense of adventure.

Space really is the final frontier. That’s what attracted me to both reading and writing sci-fi romance. I wanted to recreate the sense of adventure of the explorers, seafarers and adventurers of old — crossing uncharted seas and unknown desert sands. And of course with a little romance thrown in!

Here are my Top 10 Best Science Fiction Romance books — all action-packed with a satisfying happily ever after at the end:

1. Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair – I love this book and it’s hero cyborg Kel-Paten.

2. Finders Keepers by Linnea Sinclair – another Sinclair winner.

3. Warrior’s Woman by Johanna Lindsey – an oldie but still a goodie.

4. Naked in Death by J.D. Robb – Nora Roberts’ foray into the futuristic, this is the first book in a long series that is a little bit sci-fi, romance, mystery, thriller and police procedural. And Roarke is one of my all-time favorite heroes.

5. Moonstruck by Susan Grant – I very much enjoyed this enemies-turned-colleagues story.

6. Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh – this is the first book in the Psy/Changeling series. It’s marketed as paranormal romance but has all the hallmarks of sci-fi romance including a futuristic Earth and a powerful psychic race.

7. Caressed by Ice by Nalini Singh – another Psy/Changeling book that I love with another delicious hero. There are other books in the series I love but that feature two shifter characters (giving hte books a more paranormal vibe, so I haven’t included them in the list but Branded by Fire and Play of Passion — starring some strong heroines — are also among my favorite in the series).

8. The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook – moving away from space and the future, this is a steampunk book and filled with action and adventure goodness. This is the first book in the Iron Seas series.

9. Heart of Steel by Meljean Brook – the second book of the Iron Seas featuring a very strong heroine and a charming hero.

10. The Kraken King by Meljean Brook – another Iron Seas steampunk. I originally read this as a serial (exciting but frustrating) but it is available now as a single book. This book overflows with adventure and has a great hero.
