Hayden willed her racing heart to slow down. Her body couldn’t quite comprehend that she and Shep were all right.

They were safe.

For a moment, it had seemed that everything was lost. She’d been terrified that she’d have to watch Shep be killed.

Now…

She clung to him as one of the zodiacs pulled up alongside their disabled boat.

“Shep, fancy meeting you here.”

Ren stood with his feet apart, a rifle in his hand. He smiled.

Hayden blinked. He was handsome in that way that dazed you a little. He had a long, chiseled face, tanned skin, and deep, brown eyes. His smile was wide, with a sinful edge.

“Ren, you’re a sight for sore eyes,” Shep said.

“I knew you missed me, even if I never missed your surly, brooding ass.”

“He does know you,” Hayden said.

Shep squeezed her hip. “Permission to come aboard.”

Ren inclined his head. “Permission granted.”

Shep helped Hayden over. Ren took her hand, and guided her into the zodiac, shooting her a wide, sexy smile.

“Ms. Sinclair, it’s a pleasure.” He was talking like they were meeting at a party—not in the middle of a shootout on the ocean. “I’m Lorenzo, but please call me Ren.”

“Thanks for the rescue.”

“Believe me, I’m well practiced at saving Shep’s ass.”

Shep, with his backpack over his shoulder, stepped aboard. The two men smiled at each other, then hugged, slapping each other’s backs.

“How the hell did you end up here?” Shep asked. “I thought you were somewhere in the middle of the Pacific.”

Ren smiled. “Vander. I’ll share all the details once we’re back on my ship.” He waved a hand at the seats.

They sat, and the zodiac’s engines fired up. The boat sped off, rising and falling on the waves as they powered farther out to sea.

That’s when Hayden noticed the white ship in the distance. It looked large and fancy, with lots of antennas on top and a crane built into the back.

Shep slung an arm around her shoulders, and she leaned into him.

They were safe. She couldn’t quite believe it. Elation pushed up through the fear, shock, and adrenaline.

They pulled up at the back of the ship. There was a lower deck with several people waiting for them. They were helped aboard.

Ren handed his rifle off to someone, calling out orders to a few people. She saw several of the people looking at her with interest, and realized that they knew who she was.

Turning, she took in the large crane and several underwater submersibles stored on the ship’s deck. They looked like something out of a science fiction movie.

Ren turned, smiled, and slapped Shep’s shoulder. “It’s damn good to see you. Welcome aboard the Atalanta. The finest research vessel on the sea.”

“You always loved the water.”

“Once a SEAL, always a SEAL.”

“A probe on the planet’s surface detected something.”

Nea clutched Kaden’s hand.

“It picked something up north of the Gek’Dragar prison location. Deep into the mountains, down in one of the ravines.”

A blurry image appeared on viewscreen. It was in the base of a ravine, the darkness making it hard to see anything. Nea made out a jumble of rocks.

Then she saw movement.

A woman climbed over the rocks, and a second later, a much larger man came into view.

The woman turned her head, scanning the ravine, then the pair disappeared deeper into the ravine.

The ensign zoomed in on a still shot of the couple. Nea’s heart beat hard.

It was Carys. She was dirty, with a scrape on her cheek and her hair tangled, but it was the knightqueen. And Sten was with her.

“They’re alive,” Nea said.

“Where are they?” Kaden barked. “Can we get to them?”

Ensign Noth winced. “Um, no. About thirty seconds after this, something destroyed the probe. I’m guessing they took it out. We’ve lost them.”

Kaden cursed.

Nea pressed a hand to her husband’s arm. That gave her thrill. Her husband. “Sten and Carys have no idea that the probes are ours,” she said. “They’re not an Oronis design, and the probably think that they’re Gek’Dragar.”

Kaden ran a hand through his hair.

“I’ve sent another probe to the area to keep searching,” Ensign Noth said.

“Thank you, Ensign,” the captain replied.

“They’re alive,” Nea said. “That’s the most important thing. There’s nothing more we can do right now except wait.”

I saw Kav straighten. He was glancing down one of the paths, frowning. I followed his gaze, and spotted a tall woman striding down the path. She wore fitted black pants and a sleeveless white shirt. She walked with purpose. A woman on a mission.

Her gaze was locked on Kavner.

Kav stared back.

I frowned. “Dai, go get some fried chicken before Uncle Beau eats it all.”

“Yum.” She ran off, dragging the kite behind her.

“Friend of yours?” I asked my brother.

“Not really.”

The woman got closer, and I raised a brow. She had smooth brown skin, and striking features. Her long, black hair was in a ponytail.

“Mr. Fury.”

“Treasury Agent Coleman. Fancy meeting you here.” Kav smiled. “Are you here for a picnic?”

Treasury agent? I watched the woman carefully. I pegged her as smart, driven, and with a hard on for Kav.

And not in the usual way women wanted my brother.

“Don’t tell me you’re working on a Sunday,” Kav continued.

“I was just in the neighborhood,” Agent Coleman said. “And I’m always working.”

“It’s not good for your stress levels. You have to learn to live a little.”

The agent stepped closer. “You know I’m here to uncover money laundering, Fury. And I know you’re tied up in it. I will find the evidence I need.”

Kav sighed. “I’m a legitimate businessman, London. Everything I own is above board.”

“That’s Treasury Agent Coleman to you, Mr. Fury.”

My gaze narrowed. Kav’s businesses were legal now, although they’d had a few…gray areas when he’d first started out.

“Hi, I’m Macy.” My woman stepped forward, grinning.

The agent blinked. “Hello.”

“Would you like to join us for a picnic?”

Kav’s brows went up. I scowled at Macy. What was she up to?

“I promise you that Kavner is a good man,” Macy said. “You just need to get to know him.”

Agent Coleman straightened. “Sorry, I have to go.” She shot a glare at Kav.

My brother smiled at her.

Then the agent stalked off on her long legs.

“What did you do to piss her off?” I asked.

“Nothing.” Kav was still watching her walk away. “Yet.”

Virginia Fox has plagiarized my book

This was a post I never wanted to write.

I’ve seen other authors go through plagiarism and copyright infringement situations, and watched with sympathy and anger as they’ve dealt with people who have stolen their hard work. The CopyPasteCris plagiarism comes to mind instantly, where Brazilian author Cristiane Serruya copied works from authors like Nora Roberts, Bella Andre, Courtney Milan and more.

Now the anger is all mine.

Over the last year, I have been getting my romantic suspense series, Norcross Security, translated into German. I have a fabulous translator and have been thrilled to see German readers enjoying the series.

At the end of October, I released Der Lebensretter, the German translation of The Medic (Book 8 of Norcross Security).

Imagine my shock when a German reader contacted me to say that parts of it were similar to a book written in German and released by a Swiss author.

I released The Medic (in English) in April 2022.

At the end of June 2022, Swiss author, Virginia Fox, released a book, Rocky Mountain Bone, in German. This is book 31 of her Rocky Mountain series.

I then had The Medic translated into German in 2023, which is how this all came to light.

After investigation, I have determined that Virginia Fox copied multiple passages from The Medic, changed character names, then translated it into German, and then published it as her own book.

I contacted Amazon and after review, Amazon has taken down the offending ebook, Rocky Mountain Bone.

Plagiarism Table PDF

I used real-life inspiration in my story. My book is set in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The Theranos health technology fraud debacle in Silicon Valley was an inspiration for my fictional company Chiron and its founders in The Medic. There were also real-life scandals at the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office which I also used as inspiration in my story. Fox just copied these San Francisco based things into her Colorado-set story.

There is a funny moment I remember smiling at when I wrote my hero saying it. It’s right there in another person’s book. My words.

When I started writing, I made a promise to myself to get entertaining stories to my readers as often as I could. I write a lot, working hard and pouring myself into my stories. I do this while juggling a busy family life. It helps that I love what I do.

Seeing someone steal my hard work is just plain horrible.

Last year, I had scammers take some of my books and illegally translate them into other languages and slap their own name on the front. It took a lot of time and energy to get those illegal translations removed.

This is an even worse kind of plagiarism. An author stealing parts from books in another language and then translating and mixing it with other bits (either stolen from somewhere else or written herself). It makes it much harder to catch this type of plagiarism. It was only because I am getting my own translations done (and thanks to an eagle-eyed reader) that I discovered this.

Thankfully, Amazon have taken down Rocky Mountain Bone, but Virginia Fox has had a lot of success off the back of my words.

Authors:

Fox’s series is a long one, and she has some other series as well. I have no idea of the scale of her plagiarism, but in other plagiarism cases, it’s never just been one book. Has she plagiarized more of my books? Or plagiarized books belonging to other authors?

There is no easy way to discover this. I currently have my anti-piracy team looking into this – but it is time-consuming and frankly, takes a lot of energy. Energy I would much prefer to put toward writing.

The Rocky Mountain series has a lot of reviews on Amazon Germany. A lot of readers have, unbeknownst to them, been reading at least one plagiarised book. The author is also in the process of getting the series translated into English (I’m not sure how she thought the plagiarism would go unnoticed!)

I would like to know if you have plagiarized any other books of mine or other authors. Then I want you to take those books down.

Despite the time, energy, and all the emotions (I’ve been through a whole bunch of them since this first came to light), I just want to get back to my writing. I will NOT let a plagiarist stop me from telling my stories.

He looked out the window. Killian stalked down the steps toward a man waiting beside a battered truck.

Boone Hendrix was tall, with brown hair, and an All-American look. Bram would guess he’d been the quarterback of his school football team. He had broad shoulders, long legs, and wore a red flannel shirt, jeans, and boots.

He lifted his chin and shook Killian’s hand.

“He’s a good guy,” Nick said, from the seat across the aisle. “Was a hell of a soldier.”

Bram knew Hendrix would have been special forces, and to get selected for Ghost Ops, you had to be the best of the best.

“He has a farm up here,” Nick continued, “but he does odd jobs, mostly for friends. Keeps his skills sharp. Norcross uses him occasionally.”

Bram knew these odd jobs didn’t require hammers or saws.

Shade shifted in his seat. “I’ve heard of him. Good reputation. He keeps in touch with a few of his former Ghost Ops buddies.”

“He was in New York last year to help out Remi and Maverick Rivera,” Nick added.

Bram nodded. He watched as Boone pulled a duffel bag out of the back of his truck, then opened the passenger-side door.

A large German Shepherd leaped out.

The handsome dog wasn’t just a pet. In an instant, Bram could see the animal was well-trained and fit.

Macy Underwood strode in. She was a tiny, bubbly blonde who currently had her wavy, blonde hair up in pigtails. She was holding two Popsicles in her hands. She looked like she was in high school. But her tiny cut-off shorts, cowboy boots, and fitted, button-down shirt that showed off her breasts said quite clearly that she wasn’t a child.

Colt scowled at her. “What are you doing here? What’s with your hair?” He stared at her pigtails.

“Daisy did my hair.” She handed the little girl a Popsicle. “I’m babysitting tonight.”

“Macy, I’m not a baby,” Daisy complained.

“I know, sweetie. I’m fabulous-little-girl-sitting.”

Daisy beamed at her.

“Where are your clothes?” Colt asked.

Macy shot him a withering look. “I’m not in the office, big guy. And as I’ve told you before, you have no say in what I wear.”

I watched several interesting things cross my brother’s face, before he buried them under his usual scowl.

Macy took a step forward. “Your bowtie is crooked.”

“Dante did it.”

“It’s crooked because you f*$ked it up,” I said.

“Uncle Dante, that’s a dollar for the swear jar,” Daisy announced.

“Sure thing, sweetheart. Run me a tab.”

“Here.” Macy went up on her toes and redid Colt’s bowtie. She looked extra tiny beside my tall brother, but not intimidated one bit.

He leaned down, and I saw him sniffing her hair.

I fought a smile. Colt had been giving me shit about Mila, but I think he had his own thing brewing with his pretty, bouncy office manager.

“There.” Macy stepped back. “You’ll do. Go raise lots of money for charity. Daisy and I have tacos to eat, and a Disney movie to watch.”

“Frozen!” Daisy cried.

As Macy headed to the couch, I watched Colt’s gaze linger on her bare legs.

When he glanced at me, I cocked a questioning brow.

His scowl deepened. “Come on, I need a Scotch.”

“Bye, Daddy.”

He gave Daisy a kiss. Macy got a scowl, and behind Daisy’s back, the blonde shot him the finger. I barely controlled my laugh.

As we headed out, Colt stalked ahead. “Not one word.”

Excerpt from Hex (Sentinel Security #6) featuring Dante Fury

Cain entered the club. It was like descending into luxurious sin.

The decor was all black and gold. He passed through the lavish entry and into the main club space. A huge bar glowed gold, where an army of bartenders worked to keep the crowd watered. The ceiling also glowed gold, covered in a sea of gold flowers.

Servers darted across the space with trays of drinks, all of them decked out in shimmery, gold halter tops and black trousers.

He approached the back of the club, skirting the busy dance floor. Huge, gold urns decorated the length of the wall.

Ahead, a door opened, and a man stepped out.

He suited the interior—black tailored pants, black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and black ink visible on one forearm. His hair was jet-black, and way past needing a cut. A dark beard covered a strong jaw, and his eyes looked black as well.

Dante Fury spotted Cain and jerked his chin up. Then he waved at the doorway. Cain followed him through into the back area of the club.

There was less gloss back here. Here it was employees only, where the real work got done. Back here, the music was muffled, and offices and storerooms extended off a long hallway. This was the work center of the busy club. Cain passed a security room with a wall of screens, and several black-suited guards monitoring them. He was unsurprised that Fury ran a tight ship when it came to security.

Fury and his brothers were not always on the right side of the law, but they had a code. They were known for helping those who needed it. The five of them were more than capable of going toe-to-toe with the New Orleans underbelly.

“Going to ignore me?” She heard him cross the mats. “You can’t ignore me for the entire mission.”

“I can try.” She drank, taking her time. Then she set the cup down and turned.

He was always a hit to the system. She hated that her body noticed how he looked and reacted to it.

She let herself take in the near-white hair, the sharp cheekbones, the strong jaw, and the full lips. Lips far too sensuous for such a harsh face.

And those ice-blue eyes.

He’d been a bully at the Academy. He’d taunted her for being too studious, too serious, and always following the rules.

Kaden had always broken the rules and gotten away with it. She’d hated it.

He annoyed her on the deepest level.

“Come on now, Nea,” he said. “We’re adults, Oronis knights on an important mission.”

“Saving Knightqueen Carys is all that matters. I’ll work with you, I’ll do my job. That doesn’t mean I have to like it.”

He stalked closer, and she fought not to tense, or take a step back.

Don’t let him get to you.

He circled her, his voice a low drawl. “Maybe you will like it, Nea.”

His deep voice shivered through her, and she lifted her chin. “You break the rules when it suits you, you disappear in a blink, you lie, you omit the truth. I don’t trust you, Kaden.”

“I’ve grown up. I’m not the boy who used to pull your braids at the Academy anymore.”

“Who tormented and teased me, you mean. I don’t think you grew up. You still do whatever you want.”

He stepped even closer, their bodies barely a whisper apart.

She smelled him—a dark and spicy scent. Her belly clenched.

Ignore him. Ignore him.

“I do my duty,” he said. “I do it my way. I fight in the dark and the dirt so people like you don’t have to.”

She frowned. “People like me?”

His eyes darkened, leaking a lethal intensity. “People who follow the rules. Who are all light and goodness.” He stared at her for a beat, then stepped back. The intensity bled away from his eyes, and he grinned. “You wouldn’t last one day in my world.”

She snorted. “And you wouldn’t last one day in mine.”

“Regardless, we have to work together to find Knightqueen Carys, and bring her and Sten home. And while we do that, I’ll keep you safe.”

Her pulse skittered and she frowned. “I don’t need you to keep me safe, Galath. I do that for myself.”

He just smiled. An infuriating curl of those sensual lips.

She shoved him. “I mean it. Don’t get in my way.”

He grabbed her wrist and yanked her close. “Maybe I want to get in your way.”

“I detest you, remember?”

He made an unconvinced sound, and it triggered her temper. Nea broke his hold on her wrist and attacked.

Of course, he was a well-trained, sneaky knighthunter, so he dodged. The man was a talented fighter.

They traded blows, moving across the mat. She kicked at him, and in a blinding-fast move, he caught her leg and yanked.

She went down. She’d half rolled when his body hit hers, pinning her to the mat on her back.

“You always fight dirty,” she snapped.

His face was close to hers, his big, lean body pressed against her.

“I always fight to win. No matter what.” His gaze traced her face.

Nea rolled and executed a quick flip. She pinned him down and straddled his hips. “We will do our duty and find the knightqueen, but other than that, stay out of my way.” She glared at him, then rose.

Kaden smiled at her, staying sprawled on the mat like he was taking a nap. He tucked his hands under his head. “No promises, Laurier. I never make them.”

“Because you never keep them.” She headed for the door.

She needed some space between her and this man.

“Maybe because I’ve never wanted to make them. Before now.”

She had no idea what he meant, but she refused to look back.

Nea strode out of the gym, determined not to let the annoying knighthunter under her skin.

The pair were sitting at the back of the aircraft. Shade had his shirt off, and…wow. Addie loved Bram—his wide chest, strong body, smattering of red hair. But Shade was every woman’s fantasy. Bronze skin taut over smooth, hard muscles, and too many ridges on his abdomen to count.

Hex was standing beside him in dark jeans and a red, long-sleeved T-shirt. The woman was working on the cut high up on Shade’s muscular bicep.

“That tickles,” Shade said.

“Quit complaining, or I’ll glue your lips together.” Hex brandished the tube.

Addie bit her lip to keep from laughing.

Shade’s voice lowered even more. “I think you’d prefer I use my lips to do other things.”

Hex leaned closer, and Shade’s gaze locked on her.

“Hold still,” she said.

“F**k you smell good, Jet.”

Addie saw Hex freeze.

“Shut up, Shade.” Hex’s voice was an unconvincing whisper.

Suddenly, the man yanked her into his lap.

“If you tear that glue—”

Shade’s mouth cut off her words.

Addie grinned and slapped a hand over her mouth.

“What are they doing now?” Bram muttered.

“Shh,” she said.

Hex slid her hands into Shade’s hair, pulling it out of its bun. Her moan mingled with his groan.

God, they looked good together. Tiny Hex against the big, bad spy.

“Addie.” Bram stepped forward, crowding her. When he saw Hex and Shade, he scowled. “F**k.”

Unfortunately, Bram’s voice was loud enough for the kissing pair to hear.

Hex wrenched her mouth off Shade’s and leaped to her feet. She shot Addie and Bram a glance, smoothing her hands down her jeans. Then she glared at the spy. “Do that again, and I will hack your bank account and drain it.”

Shade grinned at her, cocky as hell. “Which one?” “All of them.” She threw the tube of medical glue at him, then stalked up the aisle of the jet.
