DARK GUARD

Galactic Gladiators: House of Rone Series

By Anna Hackett

Calla Ryss has spent months languishing in a cell, surviving her captors—the metal-scavenging species known as the Edull—after being abducted from her home world. Deep in the deserts of the lawless planet of Carthago, she is desperate to find a way out. Yet when escape comes for her and her lone human friend, it doesn’t lead to safety, but to the bone-chillingly dangerous cyborgs of the House of Rone. To her shock, Calla finds herself in the arms of a lethal cyborg with metallic silver eyes.

Zaden lives for the House of Rone. His cyborg enhancements help him keep a ruthless hold on his emotions. Loyalty, and the rare spurt of annoyance at the cyborg hunting cat that refuses to leave him alone, are the only emotions he allows himself to feel. He is perplexed when Calla falls into his arms and he begins to experience emotions he’s never felt before…a dangerous malfunction for a cyborg whose enhancements are in place not to increase his lethal abilities, but leash them.

Zaden vows to guard Calla and keep her safe—with some unsolicited help from a certain cyborg cat— when mysterious attackers attempt to snatch her. There is more at stake than just Calla’s safety. As they are drawn into an intoxicating storm of emotion, they will risk their hearts, their lives, and their freedom to rescue another innocent captive. Can they succeed against the odds, or will Calla find herself imprisoned once again?

Excerpt from Defender (House of Rone #2) featuring Acton and Sage

“You’ll love the arena,” Jayna said. “The fights are amazing.”

Sage McAlister smiled. “Awesome.”

They were hurrying through the House of Rone on their way to the arena. She glanced around, taking in the smooth, stone walls and beautiful wall hangings, mostly done in rich, royal blue.

Her new home.

Her mouth felt dry and she swallowed. She’d been rescued and she was free. Even if she could never go back to Earth, at least she was surrounded by friends.

What she hadn’t told anyone was that she felt cold inside. Numb. Unsettled. She forced her smile up another fraction. She’d never tell Jayna or the others. They’d all risked so much to save her, and she didn’t want them to think she was ungrateful. Or to continue to worry about her.

“Calla’s in her own room now?” Jayna asked.

Sage nodded. “She’s doing so much better. I think she’ll be back up on her feet in just a few days.”

Sage was thrilled that her new alien friend was healed and doing better. It would take some time for Calla to adjust to her new, cybernetic heart, but she was alive, and that’s what counted.

Mace was waiting for them at the entrance of the House of Rone. Sage took in the massive cyborg and mentally shook her head. He looked so intimidating. She watched Jayna smile and throw herself into the man’s brawny, tattooed arms.

As the couple kissed, Sage felt a punch of envy.

She’d had a boyfriend back on Earth. She and Daniel had never been as passionate as these two, but they’d been comfortable and happy together.

Sage had already taken advantage of the amazing wormhole communication system in place and sent a message to Earth. A lump lodged in her throat. Her mother, never the most maternal woman on a good day, had been mildly pleased to hear Sage was alive.

Daniel, meanwhile, had assumed she’d died. He was now engaged to someone else, with a baby on the way.

So Sage was truly alone. She shivered. She guessed she should feel more upset about it all, but she felt nothing more than cold numbness.

Jayna turned back and Sage smiled at her.

“Let’s get to the arena,” the brunette said.

Sage nodded. She enjoyed the distraction of people watching as they maneuvered through the tunnels toward the main arena. There were so many different alien species. As a paramedic, Sage had always been interested in the human body and how it worked. Now, she had a bunch of alien bodies she could learn about.

If she wanted to. She tugged on her earlobe. She wasn’t really sure what she wanted.

Early days, Sage. Give yourself a break.

When Mace and Jayna led her out of the tunnel and into the arena stands, Sage looked around, her mouth widening. This was unbelievable.

A punch of sound hit her. The vibration of stomping feet rattled beneath her.

This was just the distraction she needed.

She looked with interest at the sea of colorful spectators—so many species of beings. Her gaze moved down to the arena floor. It was covered in a layer of sand, and the gladiators were already out there, swinging their weapons and performing for the crowd before the fight began.

It would take time to get used to her new home, but she could do it. She was no longer a prisoner or a lab guinea pig. The Edull couldn’t hurt her anymore.

She pulled in a breath. Besides, she really didn’t have much of a choice.

Her stomach curdled, and she quickly moved to the House of Rone seats near the railing. Jayna waved her in and Sage sat down next to Acton.

“Hey,” she said.

“Hello.”

His voice was as cool as ice, his face as emotionless as glass.

This was the man who’d saved her from the Edull lab and carried her out of her nightmare. Her memories of her rescue were a little muddy and disjointed, but she did remember the coolness of his cybernetic arms.

“You enjoy watching the fights?” she asked.

“I don’t feel joy. But the fights are interesting displays of skill.”

She tilted her head, taking in the metal half of his face. He was really quite handsome. His smooth skin contrasted with the even smoother, silver metal. “You don’t feel anything?”

He hesitated. “Very little.”

Very little was more than nothing. Unable to stop herself, Sage reached out and stroked his cybernetic arm. “Do you feel that?”

“Yes.” His brows drew together. “I have pressure sensors embedded in my metallic skin.”

She reached up and touched his organic cheek. His skin was warm. “That?”

“Yes, of course, but I have no emotional reaction to the stimulus.”

Sage stroked his skin again. The man had ridiculously high cheekbones.

Acton cocked his head. “You don’t find my appearance…repugnant?”

She blinked. “No. Why would I?”

“Many people find my metal enhancements unsettling.”

“You’re unique, and I’ve always liked unique.”

He was silent for a moment. “If you’re looking for some sort of physical comfort from me, I’m the wrong choice.”

Sage bit the inside of her cheek to refrain from laughing. Apparently, several women from Earth shacking up with his fellow cyborgs had disturbed this man who claimed he didn’t feel.

She smiled, and it felt like the first real smile she’d done in ages. “How about we be friends?”

Acton blinked slowly. “Friends?”

“I know you have friends, Acton. People to talk with. Who look out for each other.”

A pause. “That would be acceptable.”

She bumped her shoulder against his. “You can teach me about Carthago and the House of Rone.”

“Yes. And you can explain perplexing emotional reactions to me.” He glanced over at where Ever, Quinn, and Jayna were laughing with Mace, Jax, and Magnus. “I believe I will need additional understanding as our House fills with more humans.”

She laughed. “I’ll see what I can do.”

Suddenly, she noticed that Acton was looking intently at her lips. His gaze moved back to hers, those cool, icy-blue eyes on her.

“It’s a deal, Sage McAlister.”

Sage leaned into him. There was something comforting about Acton. She felt no pressure to prove that she was happy and cheerful with him. She could just be herself. “Deal.”

STAR CRUISE: IDOL’S CURSE by Veronica Scott

Pets in Space 4 is almost here! I am so excited for this anthology of fun sci-fi romances to arrive. I am also very excited to have one of my fellow authors — the always awesome Veronica Scott — here today to talk about her story and share a snippet! I have to say that I totally want to go on a star cruise in space thanks to her series.

Welcome, Veronica…

Usually I start with the concept of the pet for my Pets In Space® stories and develop the plot from what the animal ‘suggests’ to me but this time my jumping off place was legends about tourists having bad luck after removing rocks from national parks as souvenirs.

Of  course since I’m writing science fiction, I then took the entire topic a step further and gave my ‘rock’ some scary attributes, the ability to do real harm and a bit of carving to justify referring to an idol’s curse in the title.

Stunning petrified wood in the Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, USA

It seemed to me the idea of tourists and souvenirs fit in very nicely with my interstellar luxury cruise ship Nebula Zephyr, and then since an entire deck of the ship is devoted to recreating a beach from the planet Tahumaroa Two, it was logical for the rock or ‘idol’ in question in my story to have come from that planet and need to go back there. This led me to ponder who in the crew would be likely to become involved with returning a rock and I decided it was time for the Cruise Director, Juli Shaeffer, to get her story. She’s been referenced many times in other STAR CRUISE stories but we really never met her.  I got to do all kinds of fun research into what exactly a cruise director does on Earth and then embellish and enhance for my starship.

I also got to stage a fun beach party on the ship as they prepare to arrive at the planet.

My next challenge was how to put a pet front and center in the story, and to engage them in a meaningful fashion with the action. I decided Juli and Third Officer Steve Aureli had unfinished romantic business, and that Steve has an elderly aunt traveling aboard this particular cruise. Of course Dian and Charrli, her dog, have a lot more backstory and aren’t what they seem on the surface. They’re veterans of the Sectors Special Forces Z Corps, which means Charrli is very smart and telepathic with Dian. Charrli also bonds with Juli and has an affinity for the rock or idol of the novel’s title. I liked the idea of making Charrli a darling little dog who could be carried around in a purse but who actually has all this ferocious military style training and abilities. He’s not afraid of anything, not even alien idols!

He and Moby the Ship’s cat from other STAR CRUISE stories might not get along too well but I pretty much left her out this time – I think she might have flounced off in disdain after someone let a dog on board and refused to show up for the book!

The excerpt:

Juli was traversing the beach venue on Level Five when Charrli scampered up to her, barking. She craned her head, searching the crowd for Dian but didn’t see her. “Are you lost?” she asked the dog.

Charrli ran a few steps, danced in a circle and yipped as if to demand she follow him.

“I don’t know what you want,” she said. “I can’t play right now—I’m working.”

The dog bounded to her side and carefully clamped his teeth on her hand, taking care not to break the skin as she stooped over to pet him. He growled.

Fearing perhaps Dian was ill, or in some kind of trouble, Juli looked around wildly for Steve, even as Charrli tugged harder. Deciding she could call for help on the senior officer channel if there was a problem but would feel silly if all the dog wanted was to play, Juli said, “All right, I’m coming. Show me the way.”

Charrli released her hand and bolted along the beach as if time was of the essence. Juli pursued him as fast as she could although he got a bit ahead of her. He was barking excitedly and circling an object in the sand as she quickened her pace.

And came to a dead halt, shocked at what lay in front of her.

Cover Reveal: Kiss of Eon

The fierce warriors of the Eon Empire want nothing to do with Earth…but when ravenous insectoid aliens threaten to invade, the humans of Earth need to get the Eon warriors’ attention.

We are finally back with the Eon Warriors and the Earth women who are busy bringing them to their knees!

It all started with one kickass woman abducting a fierce Eon war commander. Now, the Eon Empire and Earth have a tenuous and budding alliance, and strengthening it depends on Second Commander Brack Thann-Felis of the warship, the Desteron playing war games with feisty Captain Allie Borden of the Terran starship, the Divergent.

Let the games begin!

Today, I’m showing off the cover for the next Eon Warriors book, Kiss of Eon and I have a giveaway to celebrate.

Kiss of Eon

Eon Warriors #4

Release Date: Tuesday September 24th

Cover art by Melody Simmons

Excerpt from Heart of Eon featuring Brack and Allie

“Take out that last Kantos ship,” Captain Allie Borden ordered.

Her crew responded immediately, like the well-trained team they were. She felt the ship’s engines vibrate under her feet as it shifted and took aim. It shuddered as their laser array fired.

She smiled. They were the best crew she’d worked with in her entire career, and the Divergent was the best ship she’d ever commanded.

Allie looked at the viewscreen, watching the scattering Kantos. Run, you cowardly bugs. Then her gaze fell on the Desteron.

While the Divergent was the best ship she’d captained, she still had to admit that it was no Eon warship. God, that sleek, dark ship was pretty. Deadly and packed to the gills with high-tech weapons. Mmm.

Down, girl.

A laser blast hit the Divergent’s shields, almost knocking her off her feet.

She spread her feet. “Li?”

“Shields holding, Captain.”

A blast from the Desteron lit up the space in front of them. The intense ray of laser hit the Kantos ship, and a second later, the spacecraft exploded in a fiery ball.

She frowned and touched her earpiece. “Hey, Second Commander, you stole our kill.”

“This is not a game, Captain.” The deep rumble sounded a little pissed off.

Allie felt a spurt of satisfaction. Who knew that needling Eon warriors could be so much fun? She smiled again. When you spent most of your time in space, you had to find your fun wherever you could. Then her smile faded. Life was short, and you never knew how much time you had. It paid to enjoy it as much as you could.

“The Kantos warships are retreating, Captain,” her comms officer called out.

“Let our fighters have them,” Allie said. “Launch the squadron.”

Her second-in-command, Sub-Captain Donovan Lennox nodded, folding his muscled arms over his chest. A second later, their fighters launched from the Divergent.

“We have a fire on Deck Seven,” Donovan said.

Allie nodded. “Send the fire crew.”

“Already inbound.”

Ahead, she saw sexy, little Eon fighters slice through the darkness—the ships were sleek, with blue lights running up the sides of their streamlined forms.

“Captain, your fighters are welcome to join ours.” Second Commander Thann-Felis’ deep voice rumbled in her ear.

She rolled her eyes. “Your fighters are welcome to join ours. You were late to this fight, so you don’t get to take over.”

She heard snickers on her bridge and, with a frown, she shot a hard look around. The snickers died. She might enjoy needling the warrior and teaching him a little lesson in diplomacy, but she wouldn’t allow insubordination on her bridge.

A second later, she wasn’t surprised when the second commander drawled in her ear once more.

“Are you always this difficult, Captain?”

“No. Only when big, alien warriors try to boss me around.”

“We’re trying to help.” He sounded like he was talking through gritted teeth.

“So, help, but don’t try and take over.”

Now Allie was pretty sure she could hear him grinding his teeth together. She glanced at Donovan, and the man was smiling, his teeth white against his dark skin.

She dropped into her captain’s chair, swinging her personal comp screen up from the armrest. She swiped it and the image to go with the comm call appeared.

Her gut clenched. Oh, hell.

Of course, he had to be male perfection—a tough, rugged face, with a sharp nose and strong jaw. Thick, brown hair brushed his jawline. She couldn’t see all of his body, but she’d bet it matched the massive shoulders.

Down, girl.

“We have an alliance, Captain,” he said. “I am not your enemy.”

“Trust is earned, Second Commander.”

“My name is Brack.”

Brack. It suited him. Strong, a little gruff. “Look, Brack, you stay out of my way, and I’ll stay out of yours.”

The warrior smiled, and the air in Allie’s chest tried to choke her. The smile turned him from rugged to handsome. She felt a flare of annoyance at the irritating attraction.

“I doubt we’ll see very much of each other, Allie.”

“That’s Captain Borden, to you. And what, you think our inferior Terran ships won’t keep up with yours?”

That smile widened. “You said it, not me…Captain.”

The line closed, the screen turning black.

Ugh, men. Whatever the species, they all had the gene to drive a woman crazy.

Allie raised her voice. “Set a course back toward the Rengard. We’ll dock with them on their starboard side.”

“Yes, Captain.”

Smoothly, the Divergent moved, reminding Allie why she loved being a starship captain. All that strength, power, and ability at her command. A team she trusted at her back.

A muted alarm started pinging.

“Captain?”

She glanced at her navigation officer. “Yes?”

“The Desteron is moving into that docking position.”

Allie narrowed her eyes. Asshole. She knew he’d done that on purpose. “Adjust course.”

Alliance or not, the second commander was proving to be extremely aggravating.

As the Rengard grew larger on the viewscreen, she settled back in her chair. Luckily, Brack Thann-Felis was the least of her problems and he was correct. She probably wouldn’t ever see him again.

“Bring us in to dock, Lieutenant Harris.” Right now, Allie was going to focus on her first chance to get aboard an Eon warship. Ships held much more interest to her than men.

Excerpt from Sentinel (House of Rone #1) featuring Mace and Jayna

His boots thumped on the stone as he walked down the corridor. He was ready for a shot of home-brewed liquor and some sleep.

As he passed a closed door, he heard a thump and a muffled noise. He stiffened. He knew exactly whose room it was.

Mace charged through the door.

An object whizzed at his head and he caught the vase before it smacked into his face.

A pair of startled brown eyes looked back at him.

“You have good aim,” he told Jayna.

Her eyes were wide and panicked. She made a sound like a frightened animal, and he wasn’t even sure she saw him.

She stumbled backward, crouching low. He knew that even though she was free, in her head, she was still stuck in the hellhole the Edull had trapped her in.

“Jayna.” His voice was deep and firm. Mace couldn’t sound soft and reassuring if he tried.

Her breathing was too fast. He’d seen so many beaten, terrified people stuck in the fight rings when he’d been forced to fight. He watched the blows beat them down until they’d crumpled.

But Jayna hadn’t crumpled.

“You’re safe, remember?” he said.

She shook her head, her matted hair flying around her face.

“You’re hyperventilating.” Mace had no idea why this small woman got to him so much. “Slow your breathing. You don’t want to let the Edull win, do you?”

She snarled and glared at him.

Mace shrugged. “I’m not going to coddle you. I’ll say their name. I’ll remind you that you drakking survived.”

Her glare deepened. Good. He liked seeing her spirit. They thought they’d broken her, but they hadn’t. And besides, her breathing had slowed.

“The Edull can’t get you here. I won’t allow it.”

She rose and took tentative steps toward him. Then she raised a hand, her fingers brushing the bare skin of his chest.

A flash of heat washed over him and Mace frowned. What the drak? He didn’t like being touched. As a kid in the gangs, people either wanted to beat you or touch you in no way an adult should touch a kid.

But as Jayna closed the distance between them and pressed her face against him, he realized her touch didn’t bother him like it should. He noted that the top of her head didn’t even reach his shoulder.

He lifted a hand and pressed a palm to the back of her head. Despite the tangles and knots, her hair was silky. Her warm breath puffed on his skin.

The unfamiliar urge to pull her closer and wrap his arms around her hit him. Scowling at the wall, he stopped himself.

Mace knew himself well. He was rough and hard, with no soft edges. He’d been raised with fists, kicks, and punches. Fighting was all he knew.

No, that wasn’t quite right. In the last few years, he’d learned loyalty. To Magnus, who’d saved him, to his fellow cyborgs, to the House of Rone.

Caring for others was a weakness. He’d seen so many innocent fighters die in the organized fights the gangs had forced him into. He’d watched men try to protect their women, women try to protect their children. They’d all died, their weaknesses exploited.

It paid not to get too close to anyone. They always died or betrayed you.

“Get some sleep now,” he told Jayna.

Pretty eyes peered at him through tangled hair. Despite her traumatized appearance, her gaze was steady. Like she could see all his dark secrets.

Mace stepped back, then he swiveled and stomped out of her room.

He didn’t want anyone in his head or under his skin. Jayna was House of Rone now, so he’d protect her and make her feel safe, but that was it.

Drak. He really needed a double shot of liquor.

Galactic Gladiators Surprise Release and House of Rone Cover Reveal

We are headed back to the lawless desert planet of Carthago!

I have lots of Galactic Gladiators goodness for you today. This includes a surprise Galactic Gladiators release, HUNTER, (out now!), the cover reveal for the first House of Rone book, SENTINEL, and a Galactic Gladiators Giveaway.

Hunter contains two novellas and a short story. One novella, Desert Hunter, was released in an anthology last year (it stars Mersi and Bren from Corsair’s Caravan) and I absolutely love these two together. One novella is brand new! It is called Alien Hunter and stars Tannon Gi, head of security at the Dark Nebula Casino. This story leads us straight into the adventures that will pick up in the new House of Rone series.

I hope you’re ready to meet the bone-chillingly lethal cyborgs of the House of Rone! Their adventures start in Sentinel, which stars Jaxer Rone, the second in charge of the House. These cyborgs are dangerous but loyal, and have their emotions dampened…but all that changes as they start to track down a new group of humans stolen from Earth.

SURPRISE RELEASE
Hunter

A Novella Duo

Galactic Gladiators #12

Out now
Hunter by Anna Hackett

Cover by Melody Simmons

From the dangerous desert sands to the deadly glitz of the city, the lawless desert planet of Carthago is filled with lethal hunters risking it all for the women who capture their hearts. HUNTER contains two novellas and one short story all set in the Galactic Gladiators series.

Desert Hunter: desert Hunter Bren will do whatever it takes to protect the smart, beautiful Mersi from his darkest secrets.

NOTE: previously released as part of the 2018 Pets in Space Anthology

Born, raised, and sold into servitude on the desert world of Carthago, Mersi Kassar has finally found her freedom and her place on the Corsair Caravan, leading travelers from the gladiator city of Kor Magna through the desert. She also works side by side with her friend—the big, silent Bren—a man she’s desperately in love with. But stubborn Bren shuts down her every attempt to deepen the feelings they have for each other and Mersi isn’t sure she can take the pain anymore.

Desert hunter Bren Hahn hides a terrifying darkness within, and will protect the few people he cares about. That includes Mersi—a woman who sparks a simmering passion he finds harder and harder to ignore. On a perilous journey in the heart of the desert, Mersi and Bren rescue a strange alien creature. Working together to heal the big, shaggy canine, their smoldering desire ignites, but their feelings turn out to be the least of their concerns. A deadly enemy is hunting their new pet. An enemy that threatens Bren’s darkest secret and all they hold dear.

Alien Hunter: head of security Tannon Gi lets no one get close, until a feisty cocktail waitress explodes into his orderly life.

NOTE: this is a brand-new, never-before-published story

Mina Lan’Gar left the desert for a new life in the glitzy heart of Kor Magna known as the District. As a brand-new cocktail waitress at the hottest casino, the Dark Nebula, she’s just trying to get ahead, but all she seems to do is lock horns with the casino’s taciturn head of security, Tannon Gi. The man’s hard body, neat suits, and serious face make her want to mess him up a bit. When she overhears people conspiring to strike a private gladiator party the casino is hosting, she knows she needs to help Tannon stop the attack.

Once a deadly alien hunter assassin, Tannon finally left the life that was destroying him one kill at a time, and made a life for himself at the Dark Nebula Casino. Nothing and no one causes trouble on his watch, and that includes the mysterious woman from the desert who stirs feelings in him that he’s never felt before. When he and Mina find themselves swept up in a fierce passion and a deadly plot, they will soon learn that nothing is quite what it seems…

Includes the short story: A Galactic Gladiators Christmas

NOTE: this is a free read on my website

Mistletoe, Santa Claus, and eggnog. Cyborg Imperator Magnus Rone finds himself in the middle of party filled with rescued humans from Earth, gladiators, cyborgs, and children, trying to understand the strange traditions of Christmas.

Excerpt from Cyborg (Galactic Gladiators #10) featuring Jaxer

“Magnus? Magnus?”

Magnus lifted his gaze. Jaxer was staring at him from the other side of his desk.

“Are you even listening to me?”

Magnus cleared his throat. “Of course.”

Jax shook his head, his long, brown hair brushing his shoulders. He was several years younger than Magnus, with a leaner build and fewer cyborg enhancements. They’d been born and bred in the same military program. Jax was a brother and a friend.

“No, you’re not,” Jax said. “You’re distracted, and I know by who.” Jax rolled his eyes. The man might be a cyborg, but his emotional dampeners had never been as strong as Magnus’.

“I’m functioning at full efficiency,” Magnus said.

Jax snorted. “Don’t pull the ‘unfeeling cyborg’ routine on me. I know you’re more man than machine.” His friend pulled a face. “Though you sometimes prefer to forget it.”

Magnus ignored his friend. “Did you purchase the things Ever requested?”

“Yes.” Jax’s eyebrows rose. “I can’t believe you gave her your own private games room. You love that room.”

Love was a concept Magnus had no experience with. “It’s just a room. She needed a space to call her own.”

Leaning a hip against Magnus’ desk, Jax frowned. “It’s the only place I’ve ever seen you relax.”

“She wants to work. She has a specialty in armor. I told her to ask you for whatever she needed.”

“She did. Mostly lab equipment and every different type of armor we have. She’s been puttering around in there all afternoon.”

“Whatever she wants.”

Jax grinned. “Whatever she wants, huh? And what if she wants to get up close and personal with a cyborg imperator?”

Sometimes Jax was incredibly irritating. “I want to protect her. She’s been through enough and she’s pregnant.”

“I think it’s more than that.”

First Avarn, and now Jax. Magnus scowled. “She stirs…emotions in me, Jax. That could be dangerous.”

“You are not a ruthless killing machine anymore. You aren’t an assassin being pointed at a target, and you aren’t mindless or out of control. You are your own man, Magnus, you have been for years.” Jax pressed his hands to the desk. “I think she’d be good for you.”

Magnus raised an eyebrow. “You just want to see me make a fool of myself.”

“Yep.” Jax smiled.

It was a smile Jax assured Magnus drove the ladies wild. Jax was also much more interested in sex and women than Magnus had ever been.

“Like I said,” Jax continued, “she’d be good for you. It won’t hurt to have someone shake you up a bit.”

Magnus didn’t want to be out of control, and he certainly didn’t want to be drowning in chaotic emotions. For so many years he’d been an assassin for the military. He’d killed so many people without feeling a thing. He pulled in a deep breath. He had dangerous skills and abilities buried inside him, and he required full control of his systems to keep everything in check.

Wild emotion was just as dangerous as no emotion.

Dom

Hell Squad #18

Release Date: Tuesday June 18th

Cover art by Melody Simmons

Excerpt from Griff featuring Dom and Arden

He liked the night.

Dom Santora walked silently toward one of the entrances leading back into the Enclave. He didn’t mind patrol. Usually, he’d be on patrol with Griff, or one of the other berserkers. But after their mission in the mountains, they had a few days off.

Dom didn’t really like time off. He’d swapped a patrol shift with a soldier from another squad. He shifted his shoulder and didn’t even feel the faintest twinge. The doc had pulled the Gizzida projectile from his arm, given him a lecture about not getting to her quicker, and then shot him with nanomeds.

It had been a close call for Griff. Dom scowled into the night, remembering the tense moments. His friend had almost died, but thankfully, he’d live to fight another day. And was happily recovering in Indy’s tattooed arms.

The faintest smile tipped Dom’s lips. He’d never expected to form a bond with a man who’d once been a cop. He and the police had never mixed. But now he counted Griff as one of the few people he trusted. He was very happy Griff and Indy had found their way to each other.

His smile faded. If his friends had any chance at the happy ending they deserved, then they needed to find a way to destroy the octagon weapon. The tech team were tracking it and analyzing Indy’s pictures, but right now, they had a lot of unanswered questions.

Dom glanced at his watch. His shift was almost over. He’d been patrolling and checking for any Gizzida activity. It had been quiet. Too quiet. In his gut, he felt something was coming.

Yes, darkness was coming and it wouldn’t be good for the remaining survivors.

He released a breath, looking up at the stars twinkling in the night sky. He’d been born in the dark, raised in it, lived in it. It was all he knew, and he’d fight so the others had a chance to live in the light.

Suddenly, he scented something on the air. Flowers. Sweet and light.

He circled some trees and heard a small, indrawn breath. That’s when he saw her.

She was sitting in the darkness, knees drawn to her chest, staring up at the stars.

“You shouldn’t be out here,” he said.

She jerked, looking in his direction, searching the darkness until she spotted his shadow. She pushed to her feet and swallowed. “I just wanted some air.”

“It’s dangerous to be outside the Enclave. You know that.”

“Everything is dangerous these days.” She tucked a strand of pale-brown hair back behind her ear.

“You think a raptor won’t snatch you, just because you’re close to the Enclave? You’re smarter than that, Arden.”

She tilted her head. “You know my name.”

He knew a lot about her. Arden Carlisle. Comms officer for Squad Nine. Quietly beautiful. Elegant. Heartbreaking sadness in her big, violet-blue eyes.

He knew that she’d lost her husband and children in the invasion. He knew it had scarred her deeply. Yes, he’d watched her and he knew her name.

Dom also knew she was way out of his league.

He leaned in closer, watching her stiffen. Her gaze locked on his face.

“Advice, Arden. Don’t sneak out. The Gizzida are planning their endgame. They’re going to get bolder, take greater risks. If they find you out here, they’ll snatch you without a second thought.”

She swallowed again and nodded. “Okay. I’d better go in.”

Dom crossed his arms over his chest and watched her gaze drop down to them.

And even in the darkness, he saw something flicker in her eyes. She quickly turned away, panic on her face.

He didn’t know what made him do it, but he reached out and grabbed her arm. He felt a burst of warmth against his fingers. He breathed in and her scent filled his senses.

“Arden, promise me, no more sneaking out.”

She looked back at him and lifted her chin. For a second, he marveled at her alabaster-smooth skin.

“Sometimes… Sometimes I have to get out. The walls close in, Dom.”

So, she knew his name, too.

And he understood the feeling of being trapped. In his previous life, he’d been born trapped, lived trapped, and in the still of the night, he’d wished he could escape. He wished he could live in the light.

Even with that life behind him, he still carried it with him. It was like a stink he’d never be rid of.

One he’d never inflict on anyone else.

“If you want to go outside again, you call me,” he said.

Her lips parted and she stared at him. His gut clenched. Cazzo. Why the hell had he said that?

“You’d do that?” she murmured.

She was so damn beautiful. “Yeah. So, call me, si? And no more sneaking out alone.”

White teeth bit down on that luscious bottom lip.

“You get me, Arden? I need to know you understand.”

“I get you.”

He nudged her back toward the hidden door into the Enclave. “Now get back inside.”

She nodded, then found the hidden keypad and tapped in the code. The disguised door opened, and she took a step inside. She paused. “Good night, Dom.”

“Good night, bella.”

The door closed behind her and Dom stayed there in the dark. Where he’d lived all his life.

But for the first time in a long time, he wished he belonged in the light.

Mission: Her Safety
Team 52 #5
Release Date: Tuesday May 21st

Mission: Classified

Hero: Dr. Ty Sampson

Heroine: Ty’s mysterious intruder

Artifact: Classified

Cover artist: Melody Simmons

Photographer: Furious Fotog / Golden Czermak

Excerpt from Mission: Her Defense (Team 52 #4) featuring Ty

Ty Sampson lifted his hand as his teammates called out goodbyes. They were all outside Griffin’s, heading for their vehicles.

Hands in his pockets, he strolled down the sidewalk. Across the street, he spotted Blair and her detective. MacKade had Blair trapped against the side of his Explorer, kissing the hell out of her. They were completely wrapped up in each other.

Ty shook his head and made his way to his car.

Blair Mason was the last person he’d expected to go soft over a man. Still, he couldn’t argue that she and the detective looked damn happy.

Ty slid behind the wheel of his sleek, sporty Lexus and headed toward his place. He turned down a narrow alleyway lined by warehouses and touched the remote attached to his dash. A roller door moved upward, and he drove inside and killed the lights.

It was a single-story warehouse that had once been a body shop. When he’d bought the place, he’d renovated the front half into an apartment, but he’d left the back as a workshop with parking.

He climbed out, his boots echoing on the scarred concrete floor. Back here, he had a small lab and workshop, where he tinkered with some of his designs. He did most of his work at base, where he had a fully-equipped and decked-out laboratory. But even when he was home, he still liked to fiddle when the urge hit.

Lights clicked on. Ahead was his living area. It was cordoned off with brick and glass walls. A compact kitchen with glossy, dark granite sat in one corner, and his large, black-leather couch dominated the space.

Then he stopped. He scanned the shadowed workshop. Something wasn’t right.

He looked back toward his living area. Then he heard a noise. A door closing?

He reached into the back of his jeans and pulled out his SIG Sauer.

Someone was in his place.

Ty crept through the living area and past the kitchen, his boots silent on the polished concrete floors. He walked down the hall leading to the bedrooms—guest room, office, and his master.

He stopped at the threshold to his bedroom.

Even without the lights on, he saw it looked as it always did—warm woods and shades of gray, his big bed in the center of the room. It was neatly made, since he’d been at Area 52 all week. He was usually at the base more than he was home.

Cautiously, he walked into the room. There was no sign of anyone. He stalked toward his large, walk-in closet.

Suddenly, the doors burst open, and a figure in black surged out.

Fuck.

The intruder slammed into Ty and they hit the ground, rolling across the wooden floor. Ty grunted, wrestling to get hold of the man.

Then he felt breasts smashed against his chest.

A woman. What the hell?

An elbow connected with his jaw, snapping his head back. Ty saw stars and let out a stream of curses.

While he was dazed, his intruder leaped to her feet and ran.

Dammit to hell. Ty jumped up and gave chase.

He crashed through the living room, seeing no sign of her.

He heard something crash in his workshop and swiveled. When he charged out into the workshop, he saw her running along the top of one of his work benches. She ran straight for one wall, leaped, then clung there for a moment and began to climb the bricks. Like a damn spider.

Rushing toward her, he watched as she ascended to one of the high windows up near the ceiling. She shoved the window open, then glanced back. She wore a half mask over her face, but their gazes met for a second.

Ty felt a jolt.

Then she climbed out the window.

“Dammit!” He ran for the small door set in the roller door, shoved it open, and sprinted into the alley. He skirted around his warehouse, searching for his intruder.

Nothing. He paused. He didn’t even hear footsteps, just the distant sound of a siren.

Jaw tight, he went back inside, locking up behind him. He needed to check his goddamned security system. All those windows were wired, but she’d bypassed his system somehow.

He moved through his space, checking to see if anything was missing. Or if his intruder had left anything behind.

A quick search turned up nothing. Ty spent extra time in his lab and finally released a breath. Nothing appeared out of place. He’d still pull out his scanners and check for bugs or cameras.

He pressed his hands to his hips and ground his teeth together. Nothing looked out of place, nothing looked like it was missing.

Ty hated anyone in his space, messing with his things. It didn’t matter if it was his home or his lab.

Who was she? And what the hell did she want?

Cover Reveal: Heart of Eon

The fierce warriors of the Eon Empire want nothing to do with Earth…but when ravenous insectoid aliens threaten to invade, the humans of Earth need to get the Eon warriors’ attention.

That all starts with three sisters: one sent to abduct an Eon war commander, one sent to steal sacred Eon gems, and one sent to hijack an Eon warship.

The Eon Warriors series is chock-full of my favorite things:

Tough heroines from Earth
Sexy alien warrior heroes
Lots of action-packed fight scenes
Sexy romance where our Earth heroines bring fierce warriors to their knees

Today I’m unveiling the cover for the upcoming book, Heart of Eon. This story features computer genius Wren Traynor (who’s hijacked an Eon warship) going toe-to-toe with the ship’s captain, War Commander Malax Dann-Jad.

AND because I love to give things away to celebrate, there is an awesome giveaway as well.

Heart of Eon

Eon Warriors #3

Release Date: Tuesday April 23rd

Cover art by Melody Simmons

Excerpt from Touch of Eon featuring Wren and Malax

Shit, shittity, shit.

Wren Traynor ran through the narrow maintenance conduit. She heard the rumble of voices—deep, male voices—reverberating from nearby.

She ducked into a small alcove. In the pitch darkness, she dropped to her knees, pushed open a small panel, and crawled in. She fitted the panel back into place, and turned to face the tiny space that had been her hidey-hole for the last few days.

Dropping to her butt, she leaned against the metallic wall and sighed.

She was tired. Stressed out. And she didn’t smell very good.

That’s what happens when you hijack an alien warship, Wren.

God, her life sucked. She let her head thunk back against the wall. One day, she’d been working at her tech company, creating amazing, cutting-edge programs and being a badass with a keyboard. At night, she’d done some…creative hacking. Just to keep herself busy and her skills sharp.

Then, just over five months ago, things had gone sideways. Her sister, Eve, had been imprisoned for a crime she hadn’t committed. Wren still felt the wild rush of anger at the injustice of it all.

She pushed her mass of dark curls back over her shoulder. She winced. Her hair was greasy as hell. Gah. She needed a shower and would sell her soul for one. Wet wipes weren’t cutting it anymore.

Sighing, she pulled her tablet out. The screen glowed, lighting up the small space around her. She’d been damn grateful to find this space. Tucked between some internal maintenance access conduits, she was pretty sure the warriors didn’t know it existed.

She stroked her tablet. Her baby. She’d built the device herself. It had top-of-the-line, experimental components.

With it, and her mad skills, she’d managed to sneak aboard an Eon warship, take over their systems, and take control of the ship.

She’d then spent four days sending them jumping around distant space.

The ship’s war commander and his crew had been working tirelessly to find her. Wren had spent that time ensuring they didn’t, usually by creating havoc on the ship and keeping them busy.

She needed to get the warship to the rendezvous point with Earth’s Space Corps. Her sister’s freedom depended on it. The survival of Earth depended on it. How the Space Corps planned to subdue an entire ship of pissed off Eon warriors, she had no clue. She didn’t care. Her job was to get the Rengard to the rendezvous.

Wren rubbed her brow. She had a headache forming. She rifled through her backpack and pulled out some food packs and water.

Somehow, War Commander Dann-Jad had disabled the ship’s star drive. They were now stuck at standard speed.

It was going to be a long trip to the rendezvous. She’d run out of food and water far before then. Which was no doubt what the war commander had in mind.

She munched on the bland rations, dreaming of a thick, juicy steak. And a slice of cheesecake. Fresh strawberries. So, she could either die of thirst and starvation, or she could die at the hands of an angry Eon war commander who’d likely wring her neck. And take pleasure in doing it.

Hmm. Choices, choices.

She tossed the empty wrapper in her backpack. This was why she preferred her computer lab to spending time with people. In her lab, she was queen of her domain, and the few people she allowed in were awed by her crazy-good skills.

Wren thumbed her tablet screen, and a picture of her with her sisters appeared. Eve and Lara. Love filled Wren. She was the baby, and her sisters had always protected her, looked out for her.

In the picture, her sisters had Wren squeezed in between them. Wren was laughing, Lara had an arm outstretched to take the picture. Eve was smirking and looking badass. It was over a year old, on the last vacation the three of them had managed to take. They’d sunned themselves on a beach in the Caribbean, and the rest of the time, Wren had fought their attempts to make her go parasailing and jet-skiing.

Her sisters were both taller and more athletic than Wren. They both loved space and fighting. Both were tough, accomplished, and badass.

And then there was Wren. Her nose wrinkled. She was shorter and curvier, with five pounds she couldn’t shift. Okay, so she had a serious chocolate and latte addiction that she had no intention of giving up. And she didn’t exercise—she shuddered—unless she had to.

She touched the image of Eve’s face. God, she prayed her sister was okay. The Space Corps had forced her on a dangerous mission to abduct an Eon war commander. Air whistled through Wren’s teeth. And not any Eon war commander, the deadliest one.

Not that War Commander Malax Dann-Jad was a slouch. The man was proving way more intelligent than she’d assumed.

The Space Corps had approached Wren and offered her a deal too. Hijack the Eon warship, the Rengard, and they’d recall Wren’s sister and grant Eve her freedom.

God, her sister Lara would be going crazy with worry for Eve and not knowing where Wren was.

And here she was. Stuck in the bowels of an alien ship while its war commander tore it apart to find her.

Suddenly, her tablet screen went black, plunging her into darkness. She frowned.

Then words appeared on the screen.

Terran.

Her eyebrows rose. He’d hacked her tablet? The prick. Her fingers flew.

She and the war commander had traded a few messages over the last few days. But they were messages she’d sent him when she’d tapped his system. He did not get to hack her baby.

Wren quickly checked her system and released a breath. They didn’t have a lock on her location.

She replied. War Commander.

Earth now has an alliance with the Eon. Stand down.

What? Wren chewed her lip, studying the words suspiciously.

She tapped the screen. I don’t believe you.

Stubborn woman. Your sister brokered a deal.

Wren chewed on her lip hard enough to wince. Could it be true? Was Eve okay?

Return control of my ship.

His anger practically throbbed off the screen. She didn’t need to be anywhere near the man to know he was pissed to the nth degree.

She’d seen a photo of him. Eon warriors all looked similar—big and muscled, long hair framing rugged faces. They all had hair in shades of brown. But there was something a little harsher about Malax Dann-Jad. The firm line of his square jaw, or maybe the scowl she suspected was his permanent expression.

She tapped her screen. No.

She suspected the war commander would do just about anything to get her to surrender control of his ship. Including lie to her.

You will regret your actions.

Wren snorted. I already do, but I have no choice.

There is always a choice, Terran. Relinquish control and turn yourself in. I can assure your safety.

Another snort. Yeah, right.

Woman, do not test me. You won’t like the consequences.

Okay, Wren felt a little tremor in her belly. She never, ever wanted to come face-to-face with War Commander Dann-Jad.

Don’t threaten me. I haven’t had a latte in days, and my chocolate stash ran out a long time ago.

The screen stayed blank, and she figured he wasn’t quite sure what to make of her.

Last chance. Surrender.

Annoying man. You can’t see me right now, but I’m poking my tongue out at you. I don’t follow your orders, War Commander.

Wren tapped the screen, found the command she wanted, and hit it. Right now, lights were turning off across the entire ship.

It was childish, but she couldn’t help herself.

Woman.

Just that single word on the screen. Wren imagined she could hear the war commander’s angry roar from here.

Game on, War Commander.

Cover Reveal – Hell Squad: Griff

Welcome back to Hell Squad!

It seems like forever since we checked in with Hell Squad, Squad Nine, and the Squad Three berserkers as they are busy trying to save the world from the invading aliens.

Hell Squad is sci-fi romance, with a heavy dose of action, and some post-apocalyptic, end of the world adventure, but at its heart, this series is about heroes, hope, and love.

Today I am thrilled to be showing you the cover for the next Hell Squad book, Griff. This story stars ex-cop, ex-con berserker Griff Callan and Squad Three’s bold, tattooed comms officer, Indy.

PLUS, I have an awesome giveaway to celebrate the reveal!!  Scroll down to the bottom to enter the giveaway.

But first up, to get in the Hell Squad mood, here is the trailer for the series:

Griff

Hell Squad #17

Release Date: Tuesday March 19th

Cover art by Melody Simmons

Excerpt from Manu featuring Griff and Indy

As the others headed down the corridor, Indy moved to follow them. Griff saw the tight lines bracketing her mouth. She was still worried. He gripped her arm, his hand wrapping around the bright rose tattoos on her skin.

“Manu and Kate will be all right,” he said.

She nodded. “It’s hard listening to the fighting over the comms, and not knowing if you guys will come back in one piece.”

No way he’d be able to sit behind a desk and listen to the fighting. He’d always been a guy who preferred action, a man who believed in the law, and did whatever he had to do to protect it. He’d always thought right beat wrong, good beat evil. But life had taught him that wasn’t always the case with a big fucking betrayal he’d never seen coming, followed by the damn alien invasion.

Without thinking, he tugged Indy in for a hug. She went still, then stiffened, and tried to pull back.

But Griff didn’t want any distance between them and held her in place. She was a long, curvy handful, and smelled like she had years ago—of coconut.

“Let me go,” she said.

“You’re always avoiding me.”

“No, I’m not. I see you every day.”

“You look through me. You only look at me when you’re busting my balls.”

She glared at him. “Your balls are safe from me, Griff.”

Some indefinable mix of emotion roared through him at her words, and he backed her into the wall.

Her gray eyes narrowed on his face. “Back off.”

“I think it’s time we talk about us.”

“Us?” Her dark brows rose. “There is no us.”

“Let’s talk about why you’ve been avoiding me for years.”

“Ah, you were in jail, Griff.”

“Before that,” he growled. He wanted no reminder of the years he’d spent in that hellhole.

“We grew up. You became a cop and left.”

“Indy—”

“I’m not doing this.” She shoved at him.

He grabbed her wrists, but she yanked one free and, quick as a snake, she slammed her open palm into his nose.

“Goddammit.” He staggered back, checking she hadn’t broken his nose.

“You taught me that self-defense move, remember? So I could deal with pushy guys who wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

“I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to talk.” He glared at her.

“We have nothing to talk about.”

“We are going to talk, Indy.”

With a glare hot enough to melt his skin, she stomped off down the corridor.

Griff stayed where he was, watching the sway of her ass under her tight jeans. She was fighting him, but he’d been a cop a long time. He was good at reading people. He’d seen the flare of panic in her eyes when he’d told her they’d talk.

He thought of Kate’s words to Manu. That he’d brought color to her life.

Griff had been ignoring the shades of gray around him for a very long time. Life had ground him down, but now he was finally ready to risk it all to get some color back into his world.

To get Indy back into his world.

Excerpt from Mission: Her Security (Team 52 #3) featuring Blair

Blair Mason watched through the doorway as Smith sat beside Kinsey’s bed.

The big man was murmuring quietly, and even though Kinsey looked small and pale propped up on the pillows, she was smiling.

It wasn’t her usual beaming smile, but it was something.

Thank God. Kinsey was fine and Smith looked alive again.

During the tense hours in the waiting room, Smith had been like a statue—cold and still. His brown eyes had been devoid of…everything.

Blair watched as he leaned over and kissed Kinsey.

Jesus. Blair felt her heart clench. They were so damn cute together. Smith was a big, tough guy. Blair had fought alongside him so many times, and trusted him with her life. She knew he loved his solitude and his cabin near the mountains. Knew he loved nothing more than the serene beauty of the Colorado mountains.

She never, ever imagined seeing him like this. In love.

Blair had watched three of her teammates—three of the toughest guys she knew—fall in love. First Lachlan, then Seth, and now Smith. They were all unashamed to show how they felt about the women who’d captured their hearts.

Blair had always thought she wanted that. A man who loved her inside and out, for exactly who she was, and wasn’t afraid to show it.

And yet… That kind of man was hard to find. And she’d spent the last few hours sitting in the waiting room down the hall, watching Smith being torn to shreds.

Maybe love wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

“You called it.” Lachlan appeared beside her. “The bigger they are…”

“Yeah.” Blair pushed her maudlin thoughts away. Besides, she’d never met a man who made her feel anything remotely close to love. In fact, most men—after a quick, pleasant tussle—annoyed her.

Anyway, she had zero time to date. She couldn’t really share the truth of her work with a man, and she found most guys…kinda boring.

“The artifact?” she asked Lachlan.

Her best friend lifted his chin. “All packed up. Seth’s guarding it at the X8 until we’re ready to head home. It’s beaten up. Arlo and Ty are going to have a shit hemorrhage.”

“Ty will fix it.” Blair paused. “So, another mission over.”

“Yeah. The military police from Cheyenne Mountain took all the surviving Cosca Unita people into custody. Mission’s over and we can go home.”

For Lachlan now, home meant his woman, Rowan. Blair was happy as hell for him.

Lachlan’s golden gaze moved to Smith and Kinsey. “Could have done without Kinsey taking a bullet to the gut, though.”

“She’s okay.”

“Yeah. And so is Smith.”

“Well, once we get home, we’ll have to enjoy some downtime before we need to save the world again,” Blair said.

Lachlan tossed an arm around her shoulders. He’d been her best friend for years, from their time in Force Recon. Why were all the best men she knew her friends and colleagues? Guys who were like brothers to her?

“You won our last poker game,” Lachlan said, interrupting her thoughts. “I want a chance to win some money back.”

Blair grinned. “No such luck. You are going down, Hunter.”

He smiled back.

Blair kept her smile plastered on her face. She had good friends and work she loved. She didn’t need a man.
